I have read several comments lately along the lines of "OU did it with a frosh QB" and so on - that's fools gold sirs. OU was freakin loaded last year. Bradford had great numbers but most OU qbs have had huge numbers over the last 8 years. System. Great skill players. Great offensive line.

MORE TO COME...
Donna E. Shalala

President Shalala says she has seen the university change tremendously as the rankings indicate. It has moved from 66 to 52 since she has been president. "We don't admit thugs anymore. We do admit people that like to suntan, but those students are usually in the sun with a book in hand, and I think that's a difference people overlook," Shalala said. Right now UM is ranked at 52 and the University of Florida is ranked at 50, according to U.S. News & World Report. One of Shalala's goals is to not only get into the top 50, but to do so before the football game in fall, so "UM can beat UF twice."

Great column. I totally agree with you about the ESPN thing. When we had the #1 recruiting class on National Signing Day, NO ONE on ESPN acknowledged that for more than 15 seconds, and it wasn't talked about on Mike and Mike, PTI or Around the Horn. Yet when USC has the best class, IT'S EVERYWHERE as if they own the station. It pissed me off.

scUM...don't try that nonsense here, it will get U nowhere. For all the HATERS out there, here's the deal:

1. Don't come on this blog trying to start or pick fights. Your posts will be deleted and U will be banned.

2. If you want to come on and debate INTELLIGENTLY or talk about your team or why they will beat the Canes then that is FINE. We encourage that type pf post.

Here is an example of WRONG and RIGHT:

WRONG: Canes suck, Gators are the best. Canes fans are stupid. The U sucks.

Posts like that wil be deleted and U will be banned.

RIGHT: The Gators will beat the Canes on September 6th in the Swamp beacuse we have a more experienced, Heisman trophy winning QB. Percy Harvin will dominate the Canes secondary with his speed. The Swamp is the most intimidating place to play in the SEC if not the entire Country. Gators win 27-13.

That post is fine and can lead to debate and discussion.

Get it? Got it. GOOD!

86,

Have you really become a big enough media outlet to where you can request the AD to write articles (blog feature) for us. If you have you are doing things that Manny and Shandel rarely get to do and thats their full time job.

I vote for 86 to quit his job and become a full time Hurricane beat writer. Ill throw in the first $5 to help him financialy in his career change.

86,
Are you from Miami? I'm guessing not being offended by my post like you were. I was born and raised in Miami so I can dish it out and take it as far as trash talking is concerned. Lighten up man. This is college ball. It's supposed to be fun. I can laugh it up with Cane fans because I have respect for Miami unlike that cousin kissing, mullet having, jort wearing, natty lite drinking dump in Gainesville. I can have an intelligent discussion as well as I can lay down the trash talk. But there is no discussion to be had as far as media bias and UM is concerned. If you're not USC or UF or Nutter Lame then you're not on the media oral relations list. It's not just Miami.

Hello All,

Matt just made me aware yesterday that you guys have been reading and discussing what I've been writing.

First of all I love that it is spawning conversation and that people are taking interest. I am very flattered.

Secondly, I was not very aware of this website until I checked my e-mail last night, so that is why I haven't come on here and participated in the convo up to this point.

I would love to get in on the discussion here so I will make it a habit to come on and check it out as often as possible.

As for comments made about my position breakdowns, I would just like to say that I truly appreciate the situation of every player on our roster and have indeed been rooting on the 'Canes for as long as I can remember. Each one of these players has a place in my heart as a fan. However, sometimes the truth hurts, and that is reflected in those breakdowns. I wish nothing but the best to every one of the players and hope that every one of them exceeds my expectations and proves me wrong.

Go Canes!

PARK CITY, Utah -- Teddy Dupay, who played on Florida's runner-up team in the 2000 NCAA basketball tournament, was charged with beating and raping a woman last month at a Utah ski resort.

Dupay acknowledged in court documents that he and the woman got "a little rough" but denied rape. The woman said she and Dupay had a two-year relationship, although it was not clear whether they were still a couple when police were called to a Deer Valley lodge June 19.

The 29-year-old Dupay was charged last week with felony rape, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping. He is to be arraigned Monday in 3rd District Court.

Investigators say the woman had two fractured ribs, bruises on her arm, shoulder and thigh a swollen left eye and scratches on her back. The woman said Dupay kicked and punched her repeatedly before she was raped, according to court documents.

The woman also told officers that Dupay forced her under a desk and told her if she attempted to leave he would kill her and her family, according to the court papers.

Dupay could not immediately be reached for comment and did not have an attorney on record to represent him as of Thursday.

Dupay played three seasons at Florida before he was dismissed from the team before his senior season. Evidence surfaced that he asked another student to place bets for him on Gator basketball games. Dupay was never charged criminally with gambling violations.

Another great blog article!

I have to say though from 1st hand experience - most people do not even realize that UM is a small, private school. Even one of my best friends, who is a die-hard Carolina fan BTW, thought Miami was a public school with low admissions standards - a FIU type institution, no offense intended (one of my aunts is a FIU grad). His impression was that UM lets anyone in to play football and doesn't graduate many.

Of course, after I provided enlightenment his opinion changed.

UM's national image is nobody's fault but the school's. How bout some publicity about the football team's grad rate? Or average incoming HS gpa/sat scores? How about getting rid of the 20 yr old Gloria Esteban (love her tho) promo and replacing it with something talking up the school's academic achievements?

Fact is it's a love-hate relationship we have with Miami's national image. We fans LOVE to play up the Tuff Guy image and celebrate the good-ole-days when we danced and intimidated our way to fame, then we turn around and cry and moan about being labeled "thugs".

DTC - the media is not interested in the football team's grad rate - not damning enough. The media loves too much the old image (which they helped to create). When the 2000 and 2001 teams were rolling the compare and contrast stuff was always talked about. They mistook confidence for arrogance - the fatigue wearing team was a symbol of unity and strength among the players and there was really no dress code back then. But like in Scarface "everybody loves to hate a bad guy" so someone has to be a bad guy, right? :-D

Where is Super? We need some inside info on Lamar Miller. According to ESPN, he has not been able to get a hold of Boss Man Shannon. Maybe that is just kid speak, but I would hope Randy would at least call him and explain the running back situation and why they pulled his offer.

Anyone have any further info?

US Olympic Swimmer Puts off Cancer Surgery to Compete

ATLANTA (AP) - Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau is heading to Beijing with a devastating diagnosis: He has cancer.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Shanteau said he learned just a week before the Olympic trials in Omaha, Neb., that he has testicular cancer. His doctors cleared him to compete in that meet and he surprisingly made the team in the 200-meter breaststroke, finishing second ahead of former world-record holder and heavy favorite Brendan Hansen.

"If I didn't make the team, the decision would have been easy: Go home and have the surgery," Shanteau said. "I made the team, so I had a hard decision. But, by no means am I being stupid about this."

scUM - U made a good point - what is with the love affair the media has with UF???

DallasTX Cane

CGNC, true but also disingenuous to just blame and complain bout "the media". Heck, 86 is part of "the media" now. You're right in that there's no story for an investigative journalist on the successes of the UM football team, off the field. There's no built-in audience for that. Heck, I don't care bout some other school's successes. So, my point is that UM itself has to work harder at selling and branding itself if it wants to change that image.

The fans and the school (including former coaches and players) are all complicit in the image that was created and frankly, we revel in it.

Also, think about how many posts there are on this blog about the players of other schools getting arrested, etc. Yet, I havent seen any positive posts about the grad rates of any other institutions. Why would any of us care? Its the same thing everywhere...negative press gets headlines. And, I agree, people love having a "bad guy" - the Raiders in the 70s and 80s...the CANES...

Think on this...would U rather be "hated" and WIN, like the old Raiders, OR be irrelevant like the new/current Raiders?? If they care bout the U, even just the negative, it means we're relevant and WINNING.

Embrace the hate...kick some azz...

Sounds like a great bumper sticker...Solar U out there?

Doubt you will see that on the cover of the 2008 UM Football Media Guide, but it is a great saying!

miamimike01

I wrote a blog last year "Miami vs. the Media". (some of you older Spacers may remember)

I just don't see UM treated fairly in the media. Sean Taylor, for example, on PTI that freakish looking, combover wearing Kornheiser said he wasn't 'surprised' that Taylor was taken from us b/c of the company he kept and that he was from the U. That's an outrageous, uneducated comment to make about something he knew nothing about.

B-Ware, legally owning a gun (his 2nd amendment right) defending his roommates, who happened to be fellow Canes, while their house they shared was broken into by an intruder. ESPN and Pat Forde (I'll hate him til the day I die) says, "Miami is at it again. Players are out of control"... all the while throwing around the term Thug U.

Let's take a minute: Alabama, Penn St., Arkansas, Florida... all had multiple arrests in the off-season. Where's the outrage for these programs' players being out of control? USC is breaking rules left and right, in multiple sports, and the NCAA is dragging their feet on all fronts.

Where's the fairness in all this? Bias is spelled M-I-A-M-I

SOUP

Chicago...that is actually OLD news. The Canes said to MANY sources (Manny Navaroo included) that they wer taking two RBs in 2009.

Miller and Berry are OUT. Rumors about grades and other issues (alledged issues?). We don't want to comment on these rumors or issues because there is no proof they are true and it is unfair to the young players to spread rumors.

Rudy from ITU LOVES Berry and feel the Canes coaches should be after him HARD.

Brown (Arthur's younger bro) and Mike James from Central Florida are IN.

Next year it's Eduardo Clements from BTW and another RB I can never remember.

CanesgirlNC

Miller is disappointed he didn't get offered and has narrowed his list to FSU, WV, UF, Tennessee and South Florida

Good to hear it. I was just confused by your reaction to my original lighthearted humorous comment. Most of the people I know who were born and raised in Miami have thick skin and can take comments like that without blinking. My dad was a Killian grad as well, but I like my mom went to South Dade. UM grad, major props. I have much respect for any who graduate college and even more so for Miami grads because there seems to be so few among the fan base.

Those are good intentions but you can't have a sports site without trashtalking. This is football we're talking about, not chess. Trashtalking is apart of the fun and passion of college sports. All of my trashtalking is done with respect and done with humor. I wouldn't post any of the mindless dribble that the likes of Crocs fans use.

scUM - U made a good point - what is with the love affair the media has with UF???

CanesgirlNC, it has to do with the Gates that have poisoned the executive offices of ESPN.
BTW, on a side note, I just returned from NC and have to say that your state has some beautiful country and very relaxing lakes.

scUM - LOL I am a Miami native masquerading up in Charlotte as a Southern Belle.....in the spirit of being southern, you can call me "CGNC" as do most posters on here. It is pretty here, although somewhat "provincial" especially if you get outside of Charlotte. I thought the USC love affair started prior to their quest for a three-peat and then UF had the B-ball and Football NC's so I thought maybe that was it. But the Reggis Bush mess you hardly hear about....

Responding to yesterday comment. Ok is Nix , sec ultra conservative, I do not know. But an odd play called here and there means nothing. Example coker would go long once on the opening drive from then on totally predictable. So it is the overall not the odd play here and there that sets the tone.

DallasTX Cane

MM01, i agree that there is bias. no doubt. imo, its more complicated than just the bad old media pickn on the poor U tho. Yes, certain media types have said some extemely sh_tty things bout the U and some of the players, former and current. But, the image is a creation that the school itself and the fans are complicit in creating. plus, the team has always performed better when it has the us against the world feeling, when it has something to prove. as soon as the media embraces us, we falter. think bout playing with a chip on the shoulder in 2001 vs all the adulation the recruiting classes got from 02-04.

plus, no one has mentioned the very flattering article on RS that SI published a year or so ago.

there is bias, but the reality is more complicated than we admit. AND, IMO CANES fans should stop crying over it. We sound like a bunch of sobbing gayturds or something!

embrace the hate...kick some azz

USC is a media darling. FSU had an academic scandal and the media was all over the story beating that dead horse into the ground but somehow USC's scandals get swept under the rug. They have players getting butt loads of money, houses, cars, basketball season tikets and the media pretends nothing is going on. It's not even just the media, the NCAA sanctions committee is turning a blind eye too. It's sickening and a disgrace.

Six

What's comical to me is the fact some rent-a-cops at an airport in Tennessee said “ 'This time assume the normal Miami position', and with that he raised his hands over his head as if he was getting searched or arrested."

Wow. Guess those chuckleheads are so homer bound that they can't see past the outlandish criminal behavior their beloved Fulmer and his Vols have always been a part of since he took over for Majors. Have they even heard of the Fulmer Cup? It's pretty bad when you have a prize named after you that rewards the most frequent embarrassing and illegal actions off or on the field. You basically earn points that go to an overall total by:

- Your players doing illegal/stupid acts
- Your school/coaches/boosters illegally recruiting
- All infractions generate points

Here's how the point system works:

- Murder = 5
- Rape = 4
- Bestiality = 4 (don't believe it happens? Try looking up Oregon State player Ben Siegert stealing sheep for "study")
- Grand Larceny = 4
- Hitting Women = 3
- Theft (car, shoplifting) = 3
- Assault = 3
- DUI = 3
- Drugs (possession or sale) = 3
- Brawling in club = 2
- Underage Drinking/Public intoxication = 1
- Driving w/Suspended License = 1
- Misdemeanors = 1

The Fulmer Cup also gives out it's own "Heisman" type award: The Eliis T. Jones III Award. He won the Fulmer Cup by himself one year, outdoing entire colleges. Here he is ...

http://www.sportsargumentwiki.com/index.php?title=Ellis_T._Jones_III

Here's the Fulmer Cup all-time scoreboard

http://www.sportsargumentwiki.com/index.php?title=Fulmer_Cup_Dynasty

1st Illinois Fighting Illini 24 pts

2nd Penn State Nittany Lions 19 pts
