MidWestCane

by Thomas Brown (Senior Writer)

"Now Shannon is in and Colker is out. And nothing could be worse for the Miami football team. Shannon is as loose as a hooker with his players and obviously when you already recruit convicts you're going to have a problem there.

Not to mention the terrible recruiting job, signing over ten players from one high school, Miami Northwest. That is ridiculous. When Colker had Miami as contenders, they recruited nationally. If they ever want to become the Miami of old, they need to recruit nationally, not from just one high school."

Solar,

Thomas Brown, is a moron. This statement alone proves that fact: "Now Shannon is in and Colker is out. And nothing could be worse for the Miami football team." What planet has he been living on.

". . .and obviously when you already recruit convicts you're going to have a problem there." This is evidence which establish proof of Slander.

"If they ever want to become the Miami of old, they need to recruit nationally, not from just one high school." He doesn't know our history very well either, does he? If their is any doubt, his next statement prove it:

"They have just restarted the annual rivalry with Florida. So they have automatically added another loss to their record each year." M O R O N!

The rest of it is just added confirmation to what I have said.

Solar,

Did you make this idiot up? Is "Thomas Brown (Senior Writer)" a figment of your imagination inorder to add or create excitement on the THE SPACE? Wait, you don't have to answer that. The article answers that alone. Because no-body that ignorant could have a job writing? Assuming that they even know what writing is.

What an "article" (or artificial).

Come on.

Nice try anyway.

Even A Cave Man Could Do It.

Peace.

Re: The Hurricanes

July 22, 2008

Mr. Urban Meyer
Head Football Coach
The University of Florida
C/O University Athletic Association

P.O. Box 14485

Gainesville, FL 32604

Dear Coach Meyer,

I am writing you this note so that you can consider something as you prepare for the 2008 season. As you know, Florida has many great rivalries including the ones against fellow SEC schools and, of course, Florida State. The Gators have had significant success against many of these schools, especially recently. One school we haven’t had any success against in more than 20 years is the University of Miami.

The second Gator game I ever attended, back when I was a UF freshman in 1987, was against Miami, in the Orange Bowl. We lost. Then UF didn’t play Miami again until January of 2001, in a bowl game. We lost that one as well. The Gators, coached by your predecessor, played Miami in 2002. Our former coach later recounted to an A.P. reporter named Eddie Pells that as he watched the Hurricanes come out of the tunnel and he told the person next to him “Fellas, in three years, we're going to look like that.” Needless to say with a coach worrying about the 2005 Gators, the 2002 Gators lost that home game in embarrassing fashion. The following year in the Orange Bowl, the Gators squandered a 23-point lead with 21 minutes to play. We lost by five. And finally, the last Gator game before you took over as Head Coach was a 27-10 Peach Bowl pasting at the hands of Miami.

You can’t underestimate how important the September 6th game against Miami is to the tens of thousands of Florida alumni and students from the south Florida area. Miami is rightly recognized as being one of the top football programs of the last quarter century and their fans never let us forget it. Additionally, there’s been bad blood between these two schools ever since the infamous “Gator Flop” of 1971. If you’re not familiar with this chapter of gator lore, I urge you to find out about it.

The last time the Gators beat the Hurricanes in football was on September 7th 1985. On September 7th 2008, I want to wake up in Gainesville with a terrible winner’s hangover.

Coach, in closing, I’d just like to urge you, your coaches and the players to give Miami the respect they deserve as an opponent that can ruin our season. Though their program has fallen on tough times recently, Miami is trying to reassert itself under coach Shannon and this will be Miami’s biggest game the year. Coach Shannon played on those Hurricanes teams that beat our Gators in 1986 and 1987 but he also played on the team that lost to UF in 1985. There’s no doubt he wants this game badly. Hopefully this letter will add a sense of urgency to the preparation for this game. Every game counts, of course, but in some games there’s more on the line than a simple W or L. Go Gators!

Sincerely

Henry Gomez

BIG DADDY CANE

U KNOW i HAD TO GET ON THIS LAME STORY THIS GUY WROTE!

FIRST OFF, DIDN'T FLORIDA RECRUIT A HIGH SCHOOL THE SAME WAY LAST YEAR ( IE... A SCHOOL OUT OF THE TAMPA AREA) THIS GUY SMELL AND SOUND LIKE A HYPROCRITE! ALSO, THE MIAMI NW GUYS WERE THE NUMBER ONE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. THEY PLAYED AGAINST SOME GOOD TEAMS THE PAST FEW YEARS ALSO. i THINK I SMELL A LITTLE JEALOUSY AND ENVY GOING ON. BESIDES, WASN'T EVERY MAJOR SCHOOL GOING AFTER THESE GUYS TRYING EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK TO PERSUADE THEM AWAY FROM US. THE GOOD THING ABOUT HIM IS HE A SENIOR WRITER WHO IS GOING TO EAT CROW AND SOUND LIKE A HATER WHEN THE U IS STOMPING OPPONENTS!

2ND, WHAT THE HELL WAS HE WATCHING THESE PAST SIX YEARS WITH COKER TAKING US DOWN HILL!! WAS HE HIGH OF NARCOTICS , HALLUCINOGENS OR CANNABIS...NAH IT CAN'T BE CANNIBIS BECAUSE THE HIGH WOULD OF INSTANTLY MADE HIM RECOGNIZE THE REAL BS GOING ON WITH MY MIAMI. IT WASN'T SHANNON BUT THE HEAD COACH RECRUITING EVERYONE BUT REAL DADE AND BROWARD COUNTY BOYZ!!

3RD, HOW CAN U JUDGE A FIRST YEAR HEAD COACH WITH A SHAPPY CUPBOARD THAT WAS BARELY STANDING. THE U WAS LIKE "THE DEATH STAR" IN EMPIRE STRIKES WHICH WAS HALF BLOWN UP AND MISSING PIECES. NOW WE ARE STARTING TO BE IN FULL OPERATION. HONESTLY, I THINK THE WRITER KNOWS WAS ON THE HORIZON BUT HE 'S LIKE A REPULICAN FAKING THE FUNK ACTING LIKE THEY AREN'T SCARED OF OBAMA WHOOPING THEIR A$$ES!!

LASTLY THE LOSER MENTALITY WILL NOT, I REPEAT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED ANY LONGER AT THE U! PUT UP OR SHUT UP IS WHAT'S GOING ON IN WHAT LOCALS CALL "THE BOTTOM"!!!

Truth, I have to disagree with you one the Hators. We can and will beat them. They have just as many holes and even more inexperience at key positions as we do.

Our strengths match up quite well with their weaknesses, and they have plenty.

We don't have to be the 2000-2003 version of the Canes to beat them. This Gators team is more dangerous in some ways on offense but they're much more porous on defense. The 2004 Gators was much sharper than this year's team or last year's. Zook knows how to recruit and develop but I don't think he knows how to strategize.

I also disagree with you about coaching, head and otherwise. It makes a huge difference when you find the right coach. Just look at the U, look at the Patriots, look at USC AFTER Norm Chow left. Similar talent, very, very different results.

Strategy is critical as well, particularly for an OC. Knowing when to call what play at the perfect time is an art. Just look at Bill Walsh. Knowing how to dismantle or stifle offenses is also an art. Just look at Bill Young.

There aren't many secrets in terms of Xs and Os but when and how to use them is a "black art". haha.

Rock on. Thanks for stopping by.

Cavaleer

Solar, those quotes from the previous laid me out on the floor. LOL.

Who was it who said this UF-Miami game wasn't a "huge showdown"?

Please read that letter to Oscar Meyer above.

They're desperate and starting to get scared.

The Truth

Hey, dlu, just so you know...

Next season, when Miami is rolling at 11-1 heading into their BCS bowl game, I'm still going to tell you coaching is overrated.

Maybe you missunderstand that I am saying: X's and O's are overrated...JJ at Miami ( Cuz you brought him up)and even more so in Dallas ran an offense with Stevens and Turner that was as vanilla as you can get.

No rocket science involved when you have the all time leading rusher behind an all world o-line that also pass protects a hall of fame QB that throws to a hall of fame WR and arguably, at the time, the best TE in the league...and the FB was pretty good too.

And don't even get into the talent on D.

And to further illustrate that, how did JJ do with the Dolphins again?

Mmmmmm, not so much.

Yes, again, the coach matters. All of the good ones matter. But their role as "guru" is highly predicated on the ability of his players.

Yes, Mike Leach runs a GREAT offense and YES he stomps alot of teams with that O at his finger tips. YES he takes kids that really aren't D1 caliber and makes them look great for 8 or even 9 games a year...then he plays the big boys and what happens?

P L A Y E R S

Look at Spurrier. NO ONE will argue that the man doesn't have one of the finest offenses in the game. No one with a brain anyway. But what happened when he got to the show and saw what happens when all the players are all world like they are in the NFL...what about now at South Carolina?

P L A Y E R S

If you ain't got em, you ain't winning. Period. Doesn't matter how good a coach you are.

Coaching is overrated.

Leadership is not.

Miami is getting the players again and soon enough the good guys are going to have players that are better at every position than almost every team they play again...and Shannon will be a "genius", Nix will be an "Offensive Guru" and god knows where Young will end up after his kids are #1 in total D and scoring defense at 9 pts per game in 2009 ( Yes, that;s my ofiicial prediction there - please Vault that).

The Truth

...and who ever is running the USA track teams should be shot...

Pathetic.

Cavaleer

So, as I said, Harvin won't be ready. So we can expect a lot of Rainey and Moody, still very dangerous. Their WRs, however, are soft with Ingram out.

Bailey will be ready but I won't expect major minutes from him. Still, he can make game-changing plays, and HITS baby!!

Robinson starting. WOW!

I think that's "double possum" though. Solar, I'm sure you agree. lol

Ryan Hill returning kickoffs...wtf???

As someone else said, he did squat last year. Maybe he's turned a new leaf with all the competition. Still makes me wonder. But since none of us have seen anything, we'll have to wait and see. No Davon or Travis???

The Truth

Harvin being out may force me to reevaluate my thought that UM is not going to beat the gayturds...

I'll believe that when he's in street clothes on the 6th.

Cavaleer

Truth, it's a curse from the Chinese. lol

I agree with you about TALENT...

But I still say knowing when to call what is critical.

What's your view of the 1988 team, which I think is JJ's finest coaching job ever because the talent dropoff was huge, yet they still smoked everyone, and only because of a cheating referee.

dlu

MIAMI -- Tyresse Jones, the sinewy running back from Miami Northwestern High, was pondering his future Friday.
He was concerned for the dearth of college interest when coach Billy Rolle emerged from the office.

"Here you go," said Rolle, tossing a bundle of mail with nearly 50 college pitch letters and offers. "Now you have choices, Tyresse."

With that the torch was passed.

Jones felt like a hot prospect, knowing he'll have multiple college choices.

"It feels good," said Jones, while smiling. "I didn't know where I stood (with colleges)."

He does now and it hammers home the obvious: At talent-rich Miami Northwestern, the Bulls never rebuild, they reload, as several players are on the wish list of most BCS schools.

Jones, a rising senior, is one of eight returning starters for the Bulls, who finished top-ranked in the ESPN HIGH Elite 25 football rankings in 2007. He rushed for 527 yards and six touchdowns, but will have an expanded role when the season kicks off on Sept. 5 against Carol City (Opa-Locka).

The spring practice sessions -- Florida schools are allowed 15 in May -- came at an opportune time for the Bulls.

The first week was capped Friday amidst steamy, hot temperatures with a controlled 30-play scrimmage. This was the first live action since Dec. 15 when the Bulls trounced Boone (Orlando) 41-0 to win their second straight Class 6A state championship and fourth overall since 1995.

"It's back to work," Rolle said. "We'll emphasize the fundamentals like blocking and tackling. Time to knock the rust off and brush up on a few things; we have two more weeks after this."

Excuse Rolle if he laments the graduation of 18 seniors who signed with colleges, including eight with the University of Miami.

Instead he wrings his hands as the 2008 season kicked off this week.

Northwestern concludes the spring with a jamboree game against North Miami Beach on May 30 at Traz Powell Stadium.

"It's time for us to step up," said Jones, an ESPN 150 Watch List player. "There are doubters out there expecting us to lose this year because lost so many seniors. But that's not the way we look at it; we have a lot of young, hungry players all competing for positions."

Jones and Daquan Hargrett, who ran for eight TDs and a team-leading 605 yards on 82 carries in 2007, form a diminutive one-two running punch while Wayne Times (5-10, 170 pounds) will be the quarterback, solidifying the backfield. Center Shavin Wright is the lone returning starter along the offensive line.

"We have three solid running backs and three others were reassigned new positions just to get them on the field," Rolle said. "Players come into the spring trying out for any position but the coaches will make the final call."

Expect Times, a triple threat, to bring a new dimension to the Bulls. Jacory Harris, a 6-4 quarterback who enrolled at Miami in January, was pass-oriented, throwing for 3,445 yards and 49 TDs in 2007.

"Times is an athlete," Rolle said. "We'll do some different things this year, mainly establishing the run."

Northwestern, which completed a wire-to-wire finish atop the Elite 25 rankings, recorded its second straight 15-0 season, winning the nation's most difficult high school football tournament. The Bulls enter the season carrying a 30-game win streak, the longest current streak in Florida. The Greater Miami Athletic Conference features powers such as Miami Central, Booker T. Washington and Miami Southridge.

Last season, Rolle (112-29 record in 10 years) inherited a loaded squad with 26 returning seniors in July and knew better than to tinker with it. He won his third Class 6A state championship in his second stint with the Bulls. Rolle previously won a 6A title with Northwestern in 1998 and his second with Killian (Miami) in 2004.

Rolle righted the ship when the entire Northwestern coaching staff was let go in the aftermath of a sex scandal involving a former player and underage female student.

Instead of wilting, the Bulls pulled together, combining a quick-strike offense and stingy defense which had five shutouts.

The 4-3, ball-hawking defense is bolstered by cornerback Khalid Marshall (5-9, 165), nose tackle Todd Chandler (6-0, 280), safety Tevin McKaskill (6-2, 180) and end Wade Tolbert (6-2, 230). McKaskill is on the ESPN 150 Watch List.

Talent and depth are hallmarks for the Bulls.

"We always have the players but the spring is like a stepping stone," said Chandler, who favors Miami and Florida from a slew of suitors. "We ultimately want to win another state championship. This is the first step."

Rising junior Corvin Lamb, a converted slot back, is learning the position and already receiving recruiting correspondence. Lamb, who ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at the Underclassman Camp in February in Boca Raton, recently flashed that speed at the Class 4A state track meet.

Lamb, along with three football players, teamed to win the 4x400 meter relay. He took second in the 400 (47.96 seconds) and sixth in the 200 (21.97). Jones and Hargrett were two of the four legs on the third-place 4x100 relay.

"The bar is set high every year," said Corvin, who rushed for 338 yards and four scores as a sophomore. "It's our job to (during spring practice) to get them ready for the season and winning another title. That's what we expect around here."

Christopher Lawlor has covered high school sports for more than 20 years, most recently with USA TODAY, where he was the head preps writer responsible for national high school rankings in football, baseball and boys and girls basketball. He also for worked for Scholastic Coach magazine, where he ran the Gatorade national player of the year program for nine years. Lawlor, a New Jersey resident, grew up in Rochester, N.Y. and is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University.
