Tonight at 7 PM Canespace will be hosting our first LIVE chat of the 2008 football season with Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald. Manny, a true 305er and hard core Canes fan, is the hardest working man in sports writing and as most of you already know runs the "Eye On The U" blog at the Herald.
The Mandingo uses his hard earned street creds to access insider information and then combines that with his vast knowledge of Miami Hurricanes sports history and his extensive professional contacts to bring you the news you can use. Post your questions beginning at 6 PM to get the answers you need on all things Canes!
Note: Canespace has a new partner in the Palm Beach Canes Club. They are hosting a special event on Wednesday in West Palm Beach with former UM QB Steve Walsh as the guest speaker.

Q: I didn't think the similarities were of the religious sort, at least not publicly for Shannon. Like all great coaches they both have a way of doing things entirely by their book. The players know exactly what is expected of them. Thanks for all the time you spend covering the 'Canes and answering questions. Posted by: DZ8 | August 19, 2008 at 07:36 PM
A: I wasn't knocking Randy for not being more religious. I just know that's such a huge part of what Dungy does. Randy definitely makes his point clear when it comes to what he expects from the players. So, in that regard I agree with you.

Manny wassup?
Any word on Bailey?
And who do you see as our top return man?
Thanks for all of your great coverage of our CANES!

Q: Manny, I know we all thing Marve is the starter but lets just say Jacory is named the starter, do u think Marve will transfer before Jacory, or do u think both will stay? Posted by: BROWNSUB | August 19, 2008 at 07:36 PM
A: Marve isn't transferring and he isn't going to be the backup. Jacory isn't going to transfer either.
Posted by: Manny Navarro | August 19, 2008 at 07:50 PM
Hey Manny love your work...ok I look forward to seeing Bailey become the beast he can be, with that do you think he has Calais sophmore type year? And with the possibility of Percy Harvin out for the first 2 games does it make much of a difference or is UF just as good without him?
Posted by: ecane30 | August 19, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Manny,
To answer your question about the last time a player took a short route and went the distance, the answer is Sinorice Moss, 2005, 92 yard touchdown against Temple.
Q: Do you see Marve or Harris transferring if either one is a continual starter? Thank you.

A: What's up Roach. Bailey has been dressing fully and working off to the side. But he better be practicing by Sunday or he won't be playing in the opener.
Posted by: Manny Navarro | August 19, 2008 at 07:53 PM
Manny,
I see my question was already posted: Here's a new one.
Q: How healthy are Bailey and Moncur? Do you see them waiting for the UF game (or game 2)?
- CVS
Posted by: CVS | August 19, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Q. Given how we've gradually drifted away from this weapon over the last 2 years, do you expect to have more of an involvement regarding TE's in our offense by Nix from what you've seen at practice?
Posted by: Carlos | August 19, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Here's another quick one... what about Richard Gordon at DE if we have bunches of injuries there?
Posted by: roachcane77 | August 19, 2008 at 07:56 PM

A: If he's healthy, Bailey can be a beast. He's so strong and fast. How that translates into beating UF though is a stretch. Is it official that Harvin will miss the UM game? If so, obviously that helps the Canes.
Posted by: Manny Navarro | August 19, 2008 at 08:00 PM
Manny,
Is Sam Shields going to finally be the go to receiver this year or what? The offense always looks that much better when he's in the game.

A: Thanks for the memory CVS. I honestly couldn't remember. I think the only way Marve or Harris transfers is if Randy tells them to.

OK guys. Got to run. Practice is ending.
Posted by: Manny Navarro | August 19, 2008 at 08:02 PM
Manny....have you heard anything on cookie bucannon this spring? Also, any recruiting news or updates that we should be watching for?
Posted by: ChicagoCane | August 19, 2008 at 08:03 PM
True dat Mandingo.....I will hit you up with that question next time.
Posted by: ChicagoCane | August 19, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Roach...the REAL question is that if we have had so many injuries or just lack of depth at DE then why Gordon isn't back at DE instead of TE?
The answer must be that he is NOT a DE. Not agressive enough? Manny???
Posted by: SOUP | August 19, 2008 at 08:05 PM
And that is the BEST LIVE chat U have ever had! Nobody rocks the B L O G like the Mandingo!!!
Posted by: SOUP | August 19, 2008 at 08:06 PM
It looks like the possibility of Harvin out for at least two games is very real...

Wut up Spacers!!!!! After a long summer where I found myself in Vina del Mar Chile and Indianapolis coaching womens gymnastics, needless to say, I have been really busy and unable to contribute to the blog. With classes a week away, I finally have some time to sit back and enjoy it now.....
As for my question for Manny, who have you seen that looks like they have had the biggest change physically whether it be more or less?
Also, need a new blog named seeing as I no longer reside in RT6.....I was thinking Art Vandelay LOL

Manny, whats going on with Sam Shields. He is the only guy with experience we need him to step up this season.

I agree on SS... he's a (941) kid. (Sarasota)

Manny, how come we don't hear much from Arthur Brown? Is he just a quiet guy who doesn't like media attention? Also, who do you see being the next commit for the Canes?

Tonights Scrimmage:
Guys it appears that Sleeping Giant has awaken.
The Offense did extremely well.
Leonard Hankerson had a huge day. He caught three 30-yard plus touchdown passes, two from Marve and one from Jacory. Two of them were fly patterns. One was a bubble screen that he took to the house that was the final play of the scrimmage, about 40 yards.
Derron Thomas had the other touchdown for the offense. He caught a pass and took it 20 yards for a score.
Shawmbrey McNeal had a 50-yard run.

The other great thing about this year practices and Scrimmages is that it's not only a couple of players that are performing. Now we must see how that they perform during games. I Must say it looks exciting and I can't wait to see the U on the field. GO CANES!

CVS the things that I post are from actual Practices or Scrimmages. I don't own a video game.....don't have the time.

dunno if this was posted.
Did anyone mention who helped Javaris James with his passing catching over the summer?
Javaris said Lamar Thomas worked with him on his hands,
Kellen WinslowII, Chad Johnson and Reggie Wayne all spent time helping him with his receiving this summer.

4thQtr,
You are a lucky man for knowing the practice results...I'm the only Canes fan here in (gulp) Notre Dame (south bend, IN). Do you know what it's like trying to talk football with these kids? I've at least managed to get several kids to admit that 2001 UM was the greatest team of all time.

Another bright spot: Freshman Thearon Collier showed he can be a big-time playmaker as a punt returner – he took one attempt back 40 yards, breaking two tackles along the way.
"We have another Devin Hester out there," defensive tackle Joe Joseph said of Collier. "He's real good."
