Robert Marve, considered by many to be the odds on favorite to be named the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes this season, has been suspended by Head Coach Randy Shannon for the opening game against Charleston Southern according to published reports in The Miami Herald today.
The suspension had been rumored late Friday night on several message boards after Marve apparently leaked word of the suspension to his high school coach and family members. This morning the rumor was officially confirmed by Barry Jackson at the Herald.
Jackson reports that Marve's suspension may stem from an incident that took place in Coconut Grove over a year ago. Last year, Marve was temporarily detained by police and charged with two misdemeanors after he alledgedly broke a car mirror and initially attempted to flee the scene before being apprehended.
According to another source there are several other suspensions being handed out by Shannon. These suspensions, which have NOT yet been confirmed through independent sources will be announced later.

Me.

I reserve further judgement on the decisions until I hear from Shannon.
Posted by: dlu | August 23, 2008 at 01:00 PM
Just FYI 86, I'm hearing its only two other names (KF is one of them) and it's not that long of a list. If it is, my lord.

If somebody who knows sombody's COUSIN on some messgae board knows MORE about the Marve suspension (last night) than the MH, SS, ITU, Rivals and Scout all COMBINED then THAT is messed up my friends.
No way you can paint that picture as pretty.
NO WAY.
Posted by: SOUP | August 23, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Here's the problem:
No reporters at practice? Closed scrimmages? No access to players?
For what? So smebody's COUSIN can leak the most SIGNFICANT news story of the year on a messge board?
Now are U going to try to argue that that is NOT MESSED UP! Are U???
Posted by: SOUP | August 23, 2008 at 01:33 PM
The biggest story of the season. And....
the Miami Herald has an article and a blog up. The Sun-Sentinel: Nada

Wait for the Truth to come out. In Shannon We Trust? You all are quick to leave someone.
Posted by: DZ8 | August 23, 2008 at 01:46 PM
I'll comment on the Marve suspension because that's the only rumor I believe.
Shannon should've punished Marve waaaay back then. To wait until now is the most shytbrained decision he's made so far. I'm soooo skeptical of him now.
I come home from the hospital to this bullshyt. FUKK!

Cav: anyone disagrees with you and they're ignorant?
Whatever.
I'll restate for the record: I don't think Shannon can do the job. Didn't after last year, don't now, regardless of whether some story is rumor or not. Thought he was a good hire at the time, given his track record as D-coordinator, and his knowledge of the program. Last year changed my mind.
Just my opinion.
I'll hold off on purchasing my National Championship Game tickets. Call me a hater, whatever.
Hope I'm proven wrong. Until then, call me what you will.

Totally agree Alpharetta Cane. Shannon has now bungled the QB position two years in a row. Seems to me that he is over his head.
Posted by: nycanes25 | August 23, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Shannon's making himself look reeeeal stupid...
Posted by: CoCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Good decision 86.
I don't see why people get on you so much on other sites. As you just showed, you are typically a reasonable person and not afraid to admit making (correcting) a mistake.
That is why I like this site.
Posted by: St.PeteCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Alpha, that's fair but I've never heard you say that before.
Totally changes my perspective. I retract my previous thoughts. They had nothing to do with agreeing or disagree with me. Re-read your words and you'll see why I said what I said.
But please tell me what conclusions you can draw from last year??
However, we won't know anything real until Shannon or someone from the U actually confirms something.
It was the ease with which you said he was "in over his head" based on rumors, and a gutted team last year, that led me to say what I said.
Posted by: Cavaleer | August 23, 2008 at 01:55 PM
How can you call yourself fans? Seriuosly. How in the F*CK can you call yourself fans? Bunch of fair weather wannabes!
Then take your F*CKING asses out there and play or coach. If not, then shut the F*CK up!
Man, I am so pissed at most of you right now. This is a F*CKING rumor! UM sources: No comment! Why? cause you don't comment on rumors. And for any of you to bash a man that you haven't even heard the official word should be ashamed of yourselves. WTF!
IN SHANNON WE TRUST!
Cav, Super, 86, talk to you guys later. F*CK everyone else!
Posted by: Cane360 | August 23, 2008 at 01:55 PM
How is he making himself look stupid? Because he did the right thing? For punishing a guy that broke team rules?

I need to smoke a fat one. I'll hollar...
Posted by: CoCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:56 PM
What really sucks is getting so excited about this team all summer, following every move and player.....then right before the season starts being told players will be suspended.
Very deflating.

I am not saying another word until I hear it from Randy. I do not see any info anywhere else and you know the orlando sentinel and espn would be all over this if it was true. They both love to see the canes fall.
Posted by: canechic | August 23, 2008 at 01:57 PM
NYC, how is suspending one player for a season opener playing musical chairs with the QB??
He's stated time and time again that it's a week by week competition. So this changes nothing other than THIS WEEK.
Posted by: Cavaleer | August 23, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Canez1 is right. Lots of teams are suspending players for their cupcake game. No big deal. I can't wait to see Jacory - just a scrimmage.
Posted by: Blowfly | August 23, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Canez1, some of these guys would fit right in on Grassy or Canesport. Talk about overeacting.
Posted by: SuperCooper | August 23, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Stupid for not punishing him wnen he fukked up. That's like That's like not taking your child to Disney World in the 5th grade for something they did in the 4th grade & you knew about it the whole time. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT SUPER???

Man, it is amazzzzing how fickled fans are. Just look at what is happening:
"Shannon needs to go.
Posted by: AlpharettaCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:16 PM"
"If that list is true, Miami could possibly have a worst season than last year. Shannon seems to be over his head right now. Posted by: nycanes25 | August 23, 2008 at 01:32 PM"
"Pannunzio needs to go too.
Posted by: AlpharettaCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:26 PM"
"Shannon's fukkin' up...
Posted by: CoCane | August 23, 2008 at 01:28 PM"
Damn, I'm in the Midwest, but if I turned on the TV would Breaking News be on every station stating "Miami is on fire, there is rioting and looting in the streets, the president has set a STATE OF EMERGENCY for Dade County. Please, stay in your homes, or get out, yes, GET OUT NOW, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE; WOMEAN AND CHILDREN FIRST. NO, EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELVES. SAVE YOURSELVE, THE END IS AT HAND!" And All because of a one game suspension, and 86 (THE GREAT PUPET MASTER!).
This is going to be some year, on The Space!
Posted by: MidWestCane | August 23, 2008 at 02:02 PM
If Shannon suspeneded him then I back Shannon. Coker let these kids run wild and look what happened. Shannon don't play. This is war on the football field. Everyone has to have focus on the team. Marve did not when he did a "young and dumb" act. He deserved to be punished. As far as the "list" goes, LOOK AT IT! No way is that true.
IN SHANNON WE TRUST!
I'm out! Gotta kill some baddies in CoD 4 to relieve the stress. I apologize if I offended anyone, but I spoke as a TRUE CANE!
It's all about THE U!
Posted by: Cane360 | August 23, 2008 at 02:03 PM
There is more to this story that will come out soon. Stop hating on RS.
Remember who we are playing on Thurs. REALLY not a big deal. It is basically a scrimmage anyway.
The only negative is I would have liked to see Marve get some PT this week under his belt however what was he going to play? A half or so. Not the end of the world.
GO CANEZ!!!!!
Posted by: Canez1 | August 23, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Coke, #1, he couldn't really suspend him last year, other than doing extra sprints and what not, or somethings in addition to his community service.
#2..He couldn't shove Jacory into the deep end at the last minute if he had punished Marve earlier.
#3...UF would get a good look at Marve if he had punished him. Now they only see Jacory, who probably won't start against UF.
I'm still betting on #2. ;-)
Posted by: Cavaleer | August 23, 2008 at 02:05 PM
ESPN and the Orlando Sentinel will be all over it. Just give them a minute.
To all Canes fans just take a deep helping of oxygen. Relax. Nothing is confirmed yet. The Marve suspension is the only one that is pretty much confirmed.
How can you all sit there and say good things about Shannon and then the minute something "MIGHT" be going on that you don't agree with you jump ship on the guy?
When the whole story comes out I bet most of us agree with Shannon and the ones who don't weren't big Shannon fans to start with (not that there is anything wrong with that. I'm still not sold on his game day abilities).
Posted by: DZ8 | August 23, 2008 at 02:05 PM
Super it's funny to see all the Hatchet wounds come out of the closet!! LMAO!!
They would fit in perfectly!!
GO CANEZ!!!!!
Posted by: Canez1 | August 23, 2008 at 02:06 PM
How can Shannon suspend someone way back when he redshirted and wasn't playing anyway. He broke a rule and he needs to be disclipined. For the last couple months alot of people on this blog has been critizing other coaches for not suspending players but as soon as Shannon suspends someone for 1 game some people are ready to fire him. In Shannon and Jacory I trust.
Posted by: Mississippi Cane | August 23, 2008 at 02:08 PM
DZ8, ESPN and the Sentinel will be over the Marve suspension but they'll call the rumors just what they are...rumors.
The rest is Gator Bait. lol
Posted by: Cavaleer | August 23, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Cocane how are you going to punish a guy that doesn't play in games? Are you going to sit him from the practice squad??? uh... no
This wouldve been his first game and he is serving his time.
Remember this?????
1. Any student-athlete involved in any incident of any kind, including traffic and otherwise, after midnight will be subject to a one-game suspension.
Rules are rules for everyone. The kid fuked up and is paying the price. End of story!!
