As another year draws to a close we want to thank all of the bloggers who have made Canespace the most informative and complete University of Miami athletics blog in the entire blogoshpere! The 2008 year was an exciting one for Hurricane sports and Canespace was there all they way to cover the events that mattered most to die hard Canes fans from baseball to basketball to football.
Here is a quick run down of Holiday happenings around The Space:
"Canespace Day" at The BUC:
The UM athletic ticket office is working in conjunction with Canespace to host Canespace Day at The BankUnited Center on 1/21/09 as your Miami Hurricanes take on former UM head coach Leonard Hamilton and the FSU Seminoles.
This exciting ACC match-up will feature pre/post game gatherings at The Titanic, recognition for Canespace during the game and the possibility of meeting current and former UM players, coaches and Athletic Department officials. U never know who might show up so we strongly recommend that U do!
Canespace is the first blog to be scheduled for this type of event, so come out and support the Canes by buying tickets to the game. Contact David Siestma at UM at dsietsma@miami.edu for tickets!
All I Want For Christmas Is U: This feature will run on Christmas Day at 3 PM and include a photo essay of all of the things U love most about the Hurricanes from the ACC championship is baseball to the first season at TNP Stadium to the lovely ladies that wear the orange and green. We will also include our wish list for 2009. Be FIRST and win two tickets to Canespace Day at The BUC!
Bear Hunt: This feature will run on December 26 at 3 PM and will include a breakdown of the UM-Cal match-up in the Emerald Bowl. Be FIRST and win two tickets to the UM-FSU game!
We will be blogging the Canes vs Bears Emerald Bowl Game LIVE from San Francisco. Christopher Whelpton, also known as Orange and Green In The Vein (or OGV for short) on the blog will be covering the game for Canespace on site in the "City By The Bay".
Chris earned his FREE tickets to the Emerald Bowl by writing the season long series titled: "Short List to South Beach". Join us for LIVE blogging on December 27th and OGV's follow-up photo essay and write up of the game. This blog will be posted at 7 PM so that we have a clean, fresh blog to go LIVE for the game at 8 PM!
This blog is brought to U by Chick-fil-A.

Work does suck...
I love the Dolphins as well...
Wish everyone the best this holiday season..
The best thing about being a Miami Hurricane fan right now is: We are not just grasping at straws hoping for a return to our glory years. We have a man in charge who has a plan and is putting it in place. Last year we needed QBs (got 3), LBs (got roughly 5), WRs (can't count that high).
This year we need offensive linemen, and defensive backs. We've got about 4 D backs and three linemen right now. On National Signing Day I am sure we will have more.
You can make the argument that Randy Shannon was an average coach with above average talent as a defensive co-ordinater (That the players made him look good. I would disagree but you can make the argument). You can make the argument that Randy is not a good head coach, IMO it remains to be seen. One thing that is above argument is that Randy is one heck of a recruiter and is bringing the talent back to Coral Gables. He got rid of coaches last year who did not do their job, he will get coaches in here who can do their job. Our A.D.D., instant gratification mentality wants/needs immediate results. That is not possible in this case because like Randy said on NSD in Feb of 2008, "This class is the FOUNDATION of our future." We are not putting the finishing pieces on this soon to be masterpiece, we are laying the groundwork. The frustration and dissapointment we felt at times this season will pay dividends in the future.
The future is bright for all of Miami (Dolphins and 'Canes).

From www.hurricanesports.com:
Sophomore left-hander Chris Hernandez and junior shortstop Ryan Jackson continue to garner preseason awards as both University of Miami baseball players were named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's 2009 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American baseball team on Tuesday.
The recognition from Collegiate Baseball marks the third national preseason honor for both Jackson and Hernandez. On Dec. 5, both players were named to the College Baseball Foundation's 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List while just last week, both Miami natives were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America First Team.
For Hernandez, the Louisville Slugger honor is his second first-team selection this preseason, while Jackson picked up second team honors after being named first team by the NCBWA.
Seven Atlantic Coast Conference players were named to one of the three Louisville Slugger teams, with North Carolina and Miami combining for six of the league's seven spots. San Diego State's RHP Stephen Strasburg is the publication's preseason pick for National Player of the Year.
Hernandez, one of six starters named to the first-team staff, is coming off one of the most decorated freshman seasons in school history, finishing a perfect 11-0 with a 2.72 ERA en route to numerous All-American honors. Striking out a team-high 117 batters in 112 2/3 innings in 2008, Hernandez was recognized as the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association. He was named First Team All-America by Louisville Slugger and Second Team All-America by Baseball America and Rivals.com. He was also named Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-ACC after going 8-0 in 10 league starts.
Jackson had a breakout year in 2008, hitting .360 with four home runs, 50 RBI, 49 runs scored and 10 stolen bases en route to First Team All-ACC honors. He led the Hurricanes with 19 doubles in 2008, in addition to ranking second in at-bats (242) and hits (87) and third in batting average. His .360 average at the conclusion of his sophomore season was 124 points higher than his average in 2007 (.236), easily the greatest turnaround on the UM roster. Jackson also had another stellar year defensively at shortstop, committing just eight errors on 310 chances for a .974 fielding percentage.

More from the UM web site:
Fresh off its 11th College World Series appearance in head coach Jim Morris' 15 seasons at the helm of the University of Miami baseball program, the Hurricanes are ranked No. 18 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Fabulous 40 Preseason NCAA Division I baseball poll announced Monday.
Overall, four Atlantic Coast Conference teams are ranked in the Top 20, with North Carolina coming in at No. 2, Florida State at No. 7 and Georgia Tech at No. 12. LSU will enter the 2009 season as the nation's top-ranked team in Collegiate Baseball's poll, while Rice, Georgia and Stanford round out the Top 5 behind the Tigers and the Tar Heels.
The 2009 Hurricanes will feature 19 returning players - including 16 letterwinners - from last year's team that reached the College World Series for the 23rd time in school history and finished with an overall record of 53-11. Among the players returning this upcoming season include three National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-Americans in sophomore left-hander Chris Hernandez, junior shortstop Ryan Jackson and junior right-hander Kyle Bellamy.

Tim Harris was the head coach at Miami Booker T Washington HS. Davon Johnson and Brandon Harris were recruits from that HS.

i ment team
Posted by: wv cane | December 24, 2008 at 01:41 PM
I believe that Harris needs to get his college degree before he can officially be named a coach and recruit. Right now he is an "administrative assistant" to Shannon.
Posted by: SOUP | December 24, 2008 at 01:43 PM
i remember when he was brung aboard and i thought he would eventually have a hand in the offense i think he would be alot better than most people would beleive
Posted by: wv cane | December 24, 2008 at 01:44 PM
i read alot on here but never post i do watch every game and beleive we have as much talent as anybody else, but ithink nix has these kids so scared of making a mistake that they play way to tight
Posted by: wv cane | December 24, 2008 at 01:51 PM
Tim is a great coach, you may even see him demonstrate that this year - just saying. The jump from HS coach to D-1 OC is a bit steep. Now a position or perhaps particular group coach, hmmmmm.
I think he got his degree as a prerequisite to being Coach's special assistant
Posted by: J | December 24, 2008 at 01:52 PM
well thanks for the info i gotta go do some last minute shopping and watch the local wv mountain people grope their sisters in public

2 of my favorite Cane moments of the year was when sean spence slammed the hell out of tebow, and when bruce johnson over celebrated after recovering the ball that seans spence ripped out against virginia.

when spence pole-axed brandon james & that final sack on tyrod taylor at TNP.
can we name some more?

-When Jacory & LaRon avenged the OB finale loss with that miracle drive against UVA.(overcoming like 104 false starts)
-After cleaning up a tackle of VT's RB, Brandon Harris got down on all fours, and started poppin' sh!t to the downed ballcarrier. (I felt like I time-machined back to the late 80's for that moment)

-Marve's entire performance against A&M. Particularly when he took a big shot and still threw a money pass. (in the event that we never see him in orange n' green again, it was an excellent performance, especially considering the circumstances)
