Miami and Clemson kick off 2008-09 ACC competition with the league opener on Sun., Dec. 21, at the BankUnited Center at 7:45 p.m. in a game to be broadcast as part of FSN's ACC Sunday Night Hoops (shown on Sun Sports in South Florida). The Hurricanes ride a three-game win streak into competition, while No. 25/25 Clemson brings an untarnished 11-0 mark into Coral Gables.
THE SERIES: Sunday marks the 14th meeting between Miami and Clemson, with the Tigers holding the 7-6 edge in the all-time series. The teams split their meetings in 2007-08, with the home team winning each time. The Hurricanes have won six of their last eight meetings with the Tigers. Dwayne Collins recorded two of his four double-doubles in 2007-08 versus Clemson -- with 18 points and 12 rebounds in UM's home win on Jan. 27 and then with 11 points and 10 boards at Clemson on Feb. 27. Jack McClinton averages 18.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in three meetings with the Tigers, while Collins averages 13.7 points and team-best 9.3 points in three games versus Clemson. OPEN UP: The Hurricanes are 4-0 in ACC home openers, including a 3-0 record in ACC home openers versus ranked teams... Despite the early conference opener, Dec. 21 is not the earliest the Hurricanes have played an ACC game. Miami opened 2006-07 league play with a 90-82 win over then-No. 20 Georgia Tech on Dec. 3, 2006. HOME SWEET HOME: The Hurricanes close out a three-game homestand at the BankUnited Center on Sunday versus Clemson, however after a trip to the Big Apple to take on St. John's in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 27, Miami returns home for three-straight non-conference games. Miami is 4-1 at home this season and 48-20 (.706) at home under fifth-year head coach Frank Haith. THESE HURRICANES GOT HOPS: Hurricanes fans always enjoy a high-flying slam dunk, however several of Miami's guards have also shown great leaping ability. Senior Lance Hurdle, a 6-2 guard, has the best "hops" of any Hurricane with a 45-inch vertical jump, followed by 6-8 forward Jimmy Graham's 40-inch vertical. High-flying freshman DeQuan Jones, a 6-6 guard/forward, and 6-1 senior Jack McClinton both own 38-inch verticals. UPROOTING THE RANKED: Fifth-year head coach Frank Haith has led the Hurricanes to 11 wins over ranked opponents, including a 75-72 win over No. 25 Clemson last season. Under Coach Haith, the Hurricanes have defeated seven ranked opponents at home. Miami went 2-1 versus ranked opponents at the BankUnited Center in 2007-08, knocking off No. 25 Clemson and No. 5 Duke, while falling to No. 5 North Carolina.
Soup... the Sanford Seminole Trio looked pretty good, eh?

It's funny b4 gahee broke that long run, on his run a few plays before that where they called the late hit on james, i was just saying, i haven't seen mcgahee look this quick in a long time, than bam, 77 yards. Also, if anybody heard soldinger commentating 2nite, you would know quick some of the ingredients that made him one of the best coaches to ever coach thus far.
They kept making references to how the seminole team kept saying keep playing hard, and soldinger said, "i use to always tell my guys, you can't just play hard, you have to play hard CORRECTLY".
Than he went on to say you can't just play hard and keep making mistakes. Also, he kept calling for debose to makin a big play, but more importantly what i liked about soldinger was simple, he understood that the northwestern defense might have been set up for the deep pass earlier in the 4th quarter. I feel bad for mcaskill to have to leave highschool giving up a touchdown like that in his last game at the west, damyum that's a tuff one. He had excellent coverage too, but debose just made the play.

From Manny's blog about the M-A-R-V-E situation:
Frustrated? Well, at least Robert has something in common with the fans. Maybe if he spent a little less time in the Grove and more time on schoolwork and the playbook, he might be able to separate himself from Harris. UM QB's don't run away, they lead. Man up Robert.

Good ridence. I'm getting so tired of this kid's act. I used to think he got a raw deal but once the facts have come out I began to relize Marve is just an imature 18 year old kid. He is not mature enough to lead this team. There has been nothing but drama surronding this kid since he got on campus and he hasn't accomplished s*&t. I think he is becoming a detrament to this team and just needs to leave. This is not going to be a great loss for UM, we need leader and players. Not just talent.

Crazy thing about the fame winningcatch is that if it's a college game they instant replay that and it probably gets ruled no catch since it looked like the ball made contact with the ground.
Posted by: Esteban | December 21, 2008 at 01:46 AM
I want Marve at Miami, he had his struggles but he has more upside then JH IMO. He's 19, he needs to sort out some issues and needs some more coaching. I can't believe some are done with him already.
Coaching and the coaches concern me. I think Tennesee did more in two weeks with their hires then all the recruits we're getting. They are worse then us righg now but I think they may get back sooner now. I hope our staff proves me wrong.
Posted by: USAFCane | December 21, 2008 at 04:13 AM
That's they key right their soup, sol knows how to motivate and coach. The difference in when you hear him talking as opposed to other coaches, you can tell you're listening to a proven champion times over. To hear him keep saying he wants to get back to coaching, makes you wanna start slapping somebody again.
That's one of the problems, well i don't know if problem is the right word, but when shannon set out to recruit players, he said they were looking for those players who came from championship teams/winning ball clubs, the thing i see is that he didn't set that same type criteria with the majority of these assistantnt coaches he hired. shannon would be a whole lot better off right now if soldinger becomes the next oc but hell, since shalala is still here i'm not sure that'll happen but if he does find a way to do it, he won't have to worry about our offense not being aggressive, and sol'll be damyum if you catch him running the option or ever caling designed running plays for jacory and marve, you don't worry about plays like that coming from a runningbacks coach, i'm sure he'd tell people quick, that's what the hell we got jj & coop for.

Talk about it in Basketball Recruiting Board
FORT MYERS, FLA.- In front of Miami head man Frank Haith and assistants from Duke and Kansas, John Wall displayed his eye-popping talent in the first half of his team's win over Kenny Boynton's American Heritage squad.
Wall was sensational in the first half.
Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God 63, Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage 61
After dominating the first half behind the star power of John Wall, Word of God fell asleep in the third quarter as American Heritage erased a 13 point deficit. Kenny Boynton had a surprisingly quiet first half, making only one of six shots, but in the second half he picked it up, hitting on six of 12 shots. American Heritage actually took a two point lead with less than 20 seconds left in the game, but a Wall free throw and then an ensuing lay up gave Word of God the win.
John Wall- (15 points on 7-13 shooting, 0-3 from three, 1-4 from the line, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals, 9 assists, 8 turnovers in 32 minutes) Wall simply dominated the first half with his speed and passing, racking up seven of his nine assists. As previously documented, Wall's speed with the ball, ability to change direction and court vision are as good as it gets. His diagonal passes against the grain were impressive in this game. In the third quarter American Heritage employed a zone press which slowed down Word of God's transition game and influenced other players than Wall to try to make plays.
C.J. Leslie- (11 points on 5-8 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 steals, 2 assists and 3 turnovers) I had him for a lot more than four blocks in the official stats. The vast majority of Leslie's blocks came in the first half when he was active and challenged everything in the paint. A quick jumper, Leslie is a strong rebounder and shot blocker, but his offense is pretty much limited to a baseline spin move.
Dezmine Wells- (18 points on 9-17 shooting, 0-1 from the line, 10 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 turnovers) An undersized post player, Wells has a physical game and was consistently productive throughout the game.
Kenny Boynton- (19 points on 7-18 shooting, 0-7 from three, 5-7 from the line, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 3 turnovers) The future Florida Gator never asserted himself in the first half and uncharacteristically wasn't much involved in the offense. In the second half he got some buckets going to the basket, but he never found the range from deep.

HOUSTON- The Hightower Hurricanes blew through Pasadena Memorial Stadium Friday night at, knocking off North Shore in the second round of the playoffs. Hightower quarterback AJ Highsmith’s four touchdown performance sealed a 28-21 victory for the Hurricanes, as they get some playoff revenge against a familiar opponent.
The Hurricanes started the game with Colton Valencia, blocking North Shore’s punt on their first drive, which would set up the first AJ Highsmith touchdown.
The pure quarterback play by AJ Highsmith and the swarming defense was the staple of this Hightower win. Highsmith threw 3 touchdown passes to three separate receivers, spreading the wealth amongst his team mates.
Highsmith drew first blood, finding wide receiver Darius Johnson in the corner of the end zone on a beautifully thrown fade route for his first of four touchdowns. Highsmith would hook up with Wesley Johnson and Lydell Williams on touchdowns before the half.
Defensively the Hurricanes were lead by linebacker Phillip Stewart and defensive back Colton Valencia. #40, Stewart, could be found around the ball after every play and more times then not getting credit for the tackle. The Hurricane defense was living in the North Shore backfield all game, giving Mustangs’ quarterback Alex Tillman no time to throw and a lot of pressure.
#1 Colton Valencia is a hard hitting DB who besides having a blocked punt, had numerous pass break ups, separating the players from the ball with some real hard hitting. Valencia broke up two would be touchdowns by destroying the intended receivers and only fueling the fire that the Hurricane “D” had burning.
North Shore took a lead in the fourth quarter 21-20 with very little time left, before AJ Highsmith threw the Canes on his back and willed them a victory.
With less than a minute left to play the Hurricanes got the ball around North Shore’s 12 yard line. A good run by London Hamilton would get them with in the 10 yard line, when AJ Highsmith called his own number, pushing his way through the pile to score the final touchdown to seal the win.
Hightower moves deeper into the playoffs as powerhouse North Shore bows out in a hrad fought loss.

Miami Northwestern had a place in history within its grasp after one quarter Saturday night.
Over the next three quarters, Seminole High ripped it away.
The Bulls watched a 21-0 lead slip away, as did their bid to win three consecutive state titles, in a 28-21 defeat in the Class 6A championship game in front of 12,764 fans at the Citrus Bowl.
Despite tight coverage by Northwestern safety Tevin McCaskill, Seminole wide receiver Andre DeBose grabbed a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ray Ray Armstrong with 33 seconds remaining to cap the Seminoles' comeback.
Northwestern moved the ball as far as its own 45-yard line on its final possession, but the Seminoles ended any hopes of a miraculous comeback when defensive end Dyron Dye sacked quarterback Wayne Times on the game's final play.
The loss ended Northwestern's hopes of becoming Miami-Dade County's first team to win three state championships in a row since the playoff format was adopted in 1963.

Three more University of Miami football players have been suspended for the Emerald Bowl, UM coach Randy Shannon said Saturday after practice.
Shannon said junior tight ends Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson and freshman linebacker Jordan Futch violated a team rule, resulting in a one-game suspension for each.
UM quarterback Robert Marve was suspended Thursday for a team violation related to missed classes. It is unknown if the newest three suspensions are academically related.
Gordon's is the most significant suspension. The 6-4, 260-pounder, a graduate of Miami Norland High, had three catches for 24 yards this season. He returned one punt for 13 yards. He played in all 12 games.
Johnson played in 12 games on special teams.
Futch, who sustained a concussion earlier this season, was not expected to play in the Emerald Bowl.
The bowl game is Dec. 27 at At&T Park in San Francisco. UM departs Miami on Monday for California.
Posted by: 86Cane | December 21, 2008 at 09:35 AM
Shannon reiterated the importance of getting players to come in early for the spring semester, allowing them the extra 15 practices.
''Look at what happened this year,'' Shannon said. ``The guys from [Miami] Northwestern [and fullback] Pat Hill -- tremendous for us. When those guys come in January, they get a step ahead because it's all about getting used to the physical and mental part of the game of playing fast all the time and not taking plays off and getting into school and how much it takes out of your time.
``They have a better likelihood of playing than the guys who come in the fall.''
• Shannon said receiver Travis Benjamin (high-ankle sprain) is doing ''a lot better'' and might be able to play against California in the Emerald Bowl on Dec. 27.

I want to thank canesteeler for his contribution to the Brantley football players. With his help the Brantley Family and football players have raised about $12,000 for 5 boys left homeless and on their own after their mother suddenly passed away. One family has taken in all 5 boys until summer. This is what Christmas, community and caring is all about.

Debose almost seemed stunned for a second that the catch was made, remarking after game, “I thought the ball touched the ground, so I was (thinking) like ‘incomplete pass.’ When I saw the referee throw his hands up, my world went from zero to hero instantly.”
I feel bad for Northwestern but the seminole kids showed a lot of character to comeback from 21 points down. This is the type of kids that we need at the university of miami and the ones RS is recruiting.

Read this twice, think about it.
-- Miami was one of only 17 teams in major college football to see its scoring average from last season increase by more than 7 points. A year ago, the Hurricanes ranked 101st in the nation at 20.6 points per game; this year, entering bowl season, they're 47th at 27.9 points.
