On Wednesday night at The BankUnited Center your Miami Hurricanes beat the FSU Seminoles 75-69 in a close, hard fought ACC battle. The Canes moved to 14-4 overall and 3-2 in the ACC on the season while the Noles dropped to 15-4 and 2-2 in conference play.
Many Canespacers were on hand among the capacity crowd to not only see the game but to celebrate before, during and after the game on "Canespace Day at The BUC". Bloggers old and new were reunited at The Titanic Brewery before and after the game as Canespace held the first of several planned events of the 2009 season.
Special thanks goes out to the UM cheerleaders and David Sietsma from the UM ticket office for making the event a very special and memorable evening.
As seems to be their MO, the Canes came out cold, missed several early shots and trailed by as many as twelve points before going on a major tear to end the first half to even the game. The Canes used a 22-9 run over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 30-29 lead going into the locker room.
Miami has now won seven of their last eight games and snapped a five game losing streak to the Seminoles. UM had four players score in double figures with UM scoring machine Jack "McClutch" McClinton leading the way with a season high 28 points.
McClutch moved into 11th place on the Canes all-time scoring list with his performance but even more importantly he hit three crucial free throws over the last 30 seconds to seal the deal at the end of the game. UM center Dwayne Collins also recorded his third double-double of the season and finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
But in the end, the Canes were able to win the game and get over this major hurdle towards an ACC title thanks to a little hurdle help from UM point guard Lance Hurdle.
Hurdle, who scored a season high 16 points, was en fuego in the second half knocking down several shots from both corners to lead the Canes to victory over the dreaded Noles and former UM coach Leonard Hamilton.
Canespace blogger Canesince1982 (seen here at left with Canespacer Keoki in the middle) was at the game and also enjoyed the pre/post game activities at The Titanic. He wanted to make sure that we gave an official Canespace "Shout Out" to Hurdle for his outstanding performance.
So here's to U Lance Hurdle! Go Canes, Go Canespace!!!

My internet has been acting up, and I have a guy coming out on friday to fix it. Well as I was sitting there wondering what could be going on in the cane universe, my flordia buddy called me and said that Miami hired Charly strong as the DC. He was obviously joking, but I think that would be a great pick. He had that defense playing lights out. We would probably sway many of their defensive commetments to come to miami. It would help us for many years to come. Lets do it!!

Well this would have been my second first post of the week but guess what @ 4:30 this morning I spilled a cup of coffee on my keyboard. It took me most of this time to clean it and set it to stop doing this(pppppppppppppppp. In the search for news about the U we endure many things some printable and some not!!!
Learn from my mistake.

The afternoon crew is very knowledgeable, the late night crew is very funny but the morning crew rocks!
Great game last night and a very successful event. Can't wait for Wake Forest!

I have forgotten more about UM than most here will learn. I never went to college but I know who Eddie Dunn and his son were. I saw Rick Barry, Don Curnutt, Harry (the horse)M play in the Miami Beach Aud itorium. We used to only get 1 NFL game most Sundays it was The Redskins who featured Fullback Don Bossler ( UM grad who was famous for the BELLY series)In my opinion it was the forerunner of the VEER and triple option.
Enough of this I want to look foreward not too many years left for this old fart.

86,
Did all of those pics in all of those emails come through alright?
Also does anyone on here know how I can compress 25 pictures into 1 email with out it exceeding 10mb. 10mb is all Yahoo will allow me to send in one email. So Soup had to go through 13 emails from me to look at the 25 pictures.

I say RS will be our DC..at least for one year. It's late in the game and he may not have had anyone in mind. Sping ball is around the corner. I think he takes over
Posted by: UMike | January 22, 2009 at 12:18 PM
I've been patient and really don't care who the OC is at this point. All I know this team better show tons of improvement next year, or else I'm driving the bus personally hauling everyone out of town.
Posted by: MDCane | January 22, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Why the need to rush for an OC? It's not like we have a game next week. I have said all along..the RIGHT OC is way more important than 1 or 2 recruits.
Posted by: UMike | January 22, 2009 at 12:37 PM
What about this guy - Chris Dalman?
Posted by: MDCane | January 22, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Massie has narrowed his list to five schools; he already has visited Ole Miss, Miami and North Carolina, and has trips set to Alabama (Jan. 23) and Georgia (Jan. 30). The few sources available on this say that it's a three-team race among UNC, Alabama and Georgia, with confidence the highest in Tuscaloosa. Massie will likely be a NSD decision, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he delayed things beyond NSD. Massie is the No. 1 prep school prospect in the country.
Posted by: KLCaneFan | January 22, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Damn we could really use Massie, that sucks if we are out on him.

Its good to take your time making a choice for OC and the U could have run into a lot of no takers or whatever. But when does taking too much time enter the picture? And taking tons of time does not mean the choice will be better. Randy must know what he is look for because there were choices out there that seemed to have been passed over that were pretty good. Unless a lot of people are passing on the position, I think they need a new OC by tomorrow to settle the dust.

”I like to say that the University of Miami taught the other schools in Florida how to win the national championship,” Schnellenberger said. “I just didn’t realize the others were so hard-headed that Miami had to do it four times before they learned how to do it themselves.”

In a lot of ways that might be the best approach for getting our Defense back to concentrating on the fundamentals of their game.
With Bill Young multiple blitzes in every game used in order to put pressure on the QB, I wondered if later opponents got wise to it and tested our youth in the game.
What I mean is this, multiple blitzes was alright as an element of surprise after the UF game, but, when the the mystery was gone and when our opponents saw the repetitiveness of that sceme used in other games, it would not matter much if the DC emphesised "REMEMBER FOUNDAMENTALS" to the players or not, mainly because the players reps in practice was blitzes and stunts to prepare for the game. Not enough importance would be understood by young players of fundamentals if stunts and blitzes is seen to them as the nescessity in the game. For an example: It is OK for DEs to do inside moves (to gain an advantage on the linemen in front of them, to outmonuver him, and gain access to the QB) however, he must UNDERSTAND (not just know) that Containment is primarily his responsibility.
Such was with our young Defense. Thus, it was like teaching a kid to do bicycle tricks when the kid is still learning how to ride a bike.

I think you have to look at coaches as a fraternity. Shannon has not been a HC long and when he was an assistant he kept to himself, even with UM staff. If you look at the hires that are taking place the coaches know each other, either personally or cross paths at some point in time. A comfort level has be established between the employer and the employee (to include the players), and I don't think that's been established between Shannon and other coaches in throughout college football.

I do not care who coaches DEF.
If the big fellas up front can not hold up then we are in trouble. Because a 6'5" OL man crushes Spence ever time.
All great Miami DEF had one or two difference makers on the D line. And the D Line keep the O line from getting to LB.
Over and Over this year our LB were getting killed by O lineman. And our LB need to be bigger and stronger too. SO, they can atleast take the hit and get off of hit.
NO DC will succeed unless we get some big nasty D lineman. Heck just one huge immovable force that requires a double time would be great. Speed on the outside is nice but still need to PLUG the middle.
Come On RS....Make us proud!
Posted by: LA | January 22, 2009 at 01:26 PM
On the OC. I agree the RIGHT decision needs to be made, but a certain amount of urgency would be nice. Because we can kid ourselves and say that one or two kids do not make a different. Really?! Is that why several people on this blog say Harvin was the only reason UF won the NC. Or Tbone and Harvin.
The truth is, we need those one or two players to be a better football team.
And they make not make a difference as freshman, but by JR or SR year they could be ALL AMERICAN. Just some urgency and giving UM the best chance to close the deal on some talented young studs. BB? U here me?

But LA,
Your claim and/or statement - "Because a 6'5" OL man crushes Spence ever time." only confirm that defensive fundamentals was laking. As a DE, I was taught to jam the TE if he takes a inside move (a move between me and the DT). Coach would emphisis that a jam did not mean "stopping the TE to a complete hault." "Jam" meant to bump the TE just enough to keep him off of the OLB. Thus, if the DEs didn't understand that fundamental, and he just runs to the football or QB, then he would not ever understand what broke down.
Remember, the 83 Nat. Championship team had a small defense, but they beat BIG RED with sound fundamentals.

I honestly don't care how many stars or how high rated a kid is according to publications ... tell Jimmy Johnson about how many stars or how high of a rating a kid is and he'll laugh in your face.
Would it be nice to land a bunch of 4 or 5 star kids? I guess, but it's not the end of the world if we get a bunch of 3 star kids with 5 star heart, worth ethic, drive and hatred of losing.
I just want kids that don't quit, won't get outworked and don't accept losing. Take all the ratings stars and toss 'em. Basically, a true Cane.
As for the OC search, Boss Man Shannon knows this guy will probably make or break his career at The "U", so he's going to do what he has to do ... even if it means making a bunch of Cane fans and idiotic writers for ESPN or other publications, sweat it out each and every day until it happens.
Take the advice of JaScory and Prince Kent on what they said about the situation. That's one kid who has already been here a year and will be one of the leaders of the team, and another kid who hasn't even taken part in getting his uniform/pads/helmet fitted yet.

Slow day here on the blog. One thing I am surprised has not been mentioned yet is that Sheldon Richardson is confirmed to visit this weekend. While he did re-affirm his committment awhile back, this is certainly good new since Hurtt visit him last week.
Also, I notice all the big dogs have been quiet since before the game last night. I am starting to get the feeling something is going on behind the scenes and there staying off blog to not create any smoke...

shwarma,
Sheldon Richardson would be a huge fill for a huge need of ours at tackle.
People under estimate the Tackle position but it is probally the most important position on defense and the second or third most important on the O.

Roger that I would rather have a 3 star kid from a Championship team who hates to lose than a 5 star kid from a shyt program. Kyle anyone???
