On Wednesday night at The BankUnited Center your Miami Hurricanes beat the FSU Seminoles 75-69 in a close, hard fought ACC battle. The Canes moved to 14-4 overall and 3-2 in the ACC on the season while the Noles dropped to 15-4 and 2-2 in conference play.
Many Canespacers were on hand among the capacity crowd to not only see the game but to celebrate before, during and after the game on "Canespace Day at The BUC". Bloggers old and new were reunited at The Titanic Brewery before and after the game as Canespace held the first of several planned events of the 2009 season.
Special thanks goes out to the UM cheerleaders and David Sietsma from the UM ticket office for making the event a very special and memorable evening.
As seems to be their MO, the Canes came out cold, missed several early shots and trailed by as many as twelve points before going on a major tear to end the first half to even the game. The Canes used a 22-9 run over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 30-29 lead going into the locker room.
Miami has now won seven of their last eight games and snapped a five game losing streak to the Seminoles. UM had four players score in double figures with UM scoring machine Jack "McClutch" McClinton leading the way with a season high 28 points.
McClutch moved into 11th place on the Canes all-time scoring list with his performance but even more importantly he hit three crucial free throws over the last 30 seconds to seal the deal at the end of the game. UM center Dwayne Collins also recorded his third double-double of the season and finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
But in the end, the Canes were able to win the game and get over this major hurdle towards an ACC title thanks to a little hurdle help from UM point guard Lance Hurdle.
Hurdle, who scored a season high 16 points, was en fuego in the second half knocking down several shots from both corners to lead the Canes to victory over the dreaded Noles and former UM coach Leonard Hamilton.
Canespace blogger Canesince1982 (seen here at left with Canespacer Keoki in the middle) was at the game and also enjoyed the pre/post game activities at The Titanic. He wanted to make sure that we gave an official Canespace "Shout Out" to Hurdle for his outstanding performance.
So here's to U Lance Hurdle! Go Canes, Go Canespace!!!
Sheldon Richardson would be a huge fill for a huge need of ours at tackle.
People under estimate the Tackle position but it is probally the most important position on defense and the second or third most important on the O.

My feeling is a couple guys have turned down the job, which keeps Randy out on the road.
Like Six said this season's coaching staff is going to make or break Randy. He is running out of mulligans.
Some people on here think it is going to be a few more years until we are an above average team nationally.
Some think we will rise quickly and be a force by 2010.
The longer the U has the persona of an unstable program the harder it will be to get quality coaches to consider working here.
A winning tradition kept us in the coaches and recruits limelight for a lot of years.
It was 2003 that we were going to breeze through the ACC and win it every year.
That was a long time ago by Cane's fans watches.
The mob is going to be at Randy's door sooner than later if we don't vastly improve.
I have a lot of confidence in Shannon and think he's doing the best he can.
I'm one of the ones that thinks we are a real contender in about 4 or 5 more seasons, with or without Randy.

I say we use sheldon richardson as a tight end. We are lacking in the super star tight ends as well.. The kid can play football. When Chud come back he will turn those tight ends into the best of the best.
Posted by: Canefantasy | January 22, 2009 at 02:18 PM
58, other than Scout calling him a TE what makes you say that?
Seems like another Allen Bailey in the respect that, he wants to be one position, but the reality is he really should play at another.
I can think of a former Cane TE who should have a talk with Sheldon about becoming a DT.

"We are recruiting him as a TE.

58Staight,
True, but if we need him two play both way to win, I believe he would.
Posted by: MidWestCane | January 22, 2009 at 02:22 PM
BTW - I know the Scout headline says TE but on the prospect list they list Richardon as a DT.
He's 6'4" 270 lbs and runs a 4.7. Once he adds weight (which an 18 yr old will definitely do) that time could go up and at that weight you are already talking huge for a TE.
Boy is a player and I want him, I just don't see TE in his future.

I agree 100%, I do know for a fact however that the coaches are recruiting him to play TE here. Will he grow out of that? Possibly, but as of right now, their intent is for him to come in and contribute as a TE.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami will now play three of its four 2009 nonconference football games in the month of October.
The Hurricanes will host defending Big 12 champion and Bowl Championship Series Title game participant Oklahoma on Oct. 3 at Dolphin Stadium. It will be the first time since 1986 that Miami has hosted the Sooners. Oklahoma and Miami last met during the 2007 season in Norman, Okla. The two teams met in the 1988 Orange Bowl in Miami, which resulted in a 20-14 UM win for the program's second national title. The Sooners lead the all-time series, 4-3.
Miami will host Florida A&M on Oct. 10. The Hurricanes lead the all-time series, 6-1. UM won the last meeting between the teams in 2006, 51-10.
Miami will travel to UCF on Oct. 17 to face the Knights. The Hurricanes won the first ever meeting between the two schools last season, 20-14, at Dolphin Stadium.
Three of the four game dates are changes. UM was originally scheduled to face Florida A&M on Sept.5, Oklahoma on Sept. 12 and UCF on Oct. 3.

That only means we will play Acc teams right off the back . IMO that will only help us get ready For OU and the rest of our nonconference opponents. Thee ACC championship is all the line early this year...I can dig that.

solarcane,
Haven't RS done everything to turn around that persona which you say - "The longer the U has the persona of an unstable program the harder it will be to get quality coaches to consider working here."
We gave Coker 4 years while the program was heading south every year. So, why the indirect emphasis on giving him less time to turn things around (things that Coker messed up) especially when there has beem improvement every year under his watch.

Midwest Cane, I am with your big fella.
Coach em up and teach em right! All the talk of how tight the ship is being run, well then bench somebody's butt when he blow an assignement.
For the record, JJ was/is a talent evaluatiing somebody! Not everyone can judge that well. And the position changes of the past were because there was RECONGIZED advantage to moving a player.
Not just a need move or because of injury move. And most of the guys who switched were/are freaks and once of a kind athletes.
The whispers are beginning to say "Peole want RS job and want him to fail or affraid he will fail". Is he really "in" the coaching Fraternity and is he well respected? I like them but I can see the point being made about established relationship and friends.

Life before and after Tebow leaves will start the dreaded downfall. Oh yeah we'll see how U all handle not having Percy back this year does to the offense. Tea-bag can't do it all himself without his go to guy.....U just wait and see!

Just like how Obama took the highest office so will Shannon one day soon on the football field. The south without rednecks have risen by the way. The ole south is washed up dude. As far as I am concern all confederate boys can go to hell.
Posted by: Mr Troutman | January 22, 2009 at 02:49 PM
mid,
I think you misunderstood what I meant, or I didn't say it properly.
what I was pointing out was:
A starting quarterback transferring because he can't play for his head coach
A DC that leaves after one year saying he is homesick.
A search for an offensive coordinator that seems to be taking awhile
If you're a Miami fan you can shrug these off and hope things will get right
If you were an outsider looking at the program right now what would you honestly think?

OK! I get it. Typepad's TSA's agents have flagged me as dangerous and need to conduct a thorough investigation before I am allowed access again.
Hell, by that time the Canes will have won a ring for the other hand!
Go Canes!

Solar pulled the, "mom and dad won't know if I'm gone if I put a few stuffed animals under the covers and sneak out for a while trick."
It worked pretty well. Only thing is, dad (Soup) had to remind him to pick up his sister after school and then realized he'd been had!
Now, the question is, what would RS do 'bout this?
Go Canes!

Interesting from Bruce Feldman. Hadnt heard a couple of these angles:
Don't be surprised if Randy Shannon goes after Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty again to fill his vacant offensive coordinator spot. There are rumors that Shannon also interviewed former K-State coach Ron Prince on Tuesday. I've heard that former Jets assistant Noel Mazzone has tried to make a run at the job as well. Mazzone is close to UM tight-ends coach Joe Pannunzio and also has the support of Federal Express founder Fred Smith, a potentially big Miami booster who is also the father of backup Canes QB Cannon Smith.

Robert Marve was seen and talked to at the Lightning hockey game, full glass of "adult beverage" in hand, looking very happy ... said he was seriously looking at Oklahoma State.
Funny. Wonder how many of the other Cane players are out getting their drink on.
