The Tar Heels will have to prepare for the Canes quickly after Thursday’s 83-61 road win over Virginia, which game them their first ACC victory of 2008-09. Your University of Miami Hurricanes ride a six-game win streak into Saturday’s late-night ACC contest at No. 5/6 North Carolina. The Hurricanes will arrive in surprisingly frigid Chapel Hill after Wednesday’s come-from-behind win over Maryland 62-60, and with a 2-1 mark in ACC play.
Saturday’s game marks Miami’s third appearance of the season on ESPN. This marks the most ESPN-televised games for the program since 2002-03. The Hurricanes have gone 1-1 on ESPN this year, including the program’s first victory at Rupp Arena on Dec. 6. ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast live from the Smith Center on Saturday.
The Canes have four North Carolina natives, including head coach Frank Haith who spent much of his youth in the area, as well as his college years at Elon. Senior Jimmy Graham grew up in Goldsboro (Charis Prep), redshirt freshman Julian Gamble is a Durham native (Southern Durham HS) and freshman Reggie Johnson hails from Winston-Salem (Winston-Salem Prep).
Since the summer, Haith and his wife Pam have been spearheading fundraising and renovation efforts for Morningside Park in Elon, N.C., in the neighborhood in which Coach grew up. A walking path is being constructed, while plans are underway to refurbish the basketball court, bathrooms and playground.
The Canes will have their hands full with ACC wonderkind Tyler Hansbrough and his crew. This game will undoubtedly indicate where these two teams stand in terms of the battle for ACC supremacy.
We would like to predict a Miami victory in the hills of 'Caroline but...OK, Canes win, Canes win!
Look at Soup being sneaky. lol
Alright, I am officially out.

Am I the only one finding it amazing that we got a good shot at all the guys we really wanted? Randle, debose, Charles, hall, Richardson, and the other hargrave linemen. Won't get all but even two or three would be big time.
Posted by: Esteban | January 17, 2009 at 02:29 AM
Damn, forgot about Browning. I'd put him behind the others i listed last blog only because he has no HC experience which I'm just dying for somebody on the staff to have since the original staff never filled that void and I think it might have cost us two or three wins the last two years. But I love the run/pass distribution his crews put up in the Metrodome on their way to some real impressive offensive statistics. Too bad they don't give championships out for statistics though except the winning %.

TLuv, I remember Brady Quinn out-lifting Beason. Obviously that hasn't affected Beason's play. lol But our guys have been outmuscled by other schools for several years now.
I remember watching the 2000 FSU game and noticing how we looked bigger and stronger than FSU. Obviously we didn't in 1997. Since 2001 we've gone down, down, down. Pitt outmuscled us in 2002, along with OSU obviously.
At first we thought it was the kids not training because they weren't true Canes. But with the info that Swasey never really was a strength guy, it all makes sense, sort of.
Posted by: Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer | January 17, 2009 at 01:30 AM
Chi Pun
Ya know when you explain to shannon haters how bare the cupboard was when shannon took over? Well the argument works the same for Swasey. Think about it
Second, I don't think being a big muscled team has really been our trademark. Schools like Penn State and OU like to have huge muscular guys but not the U. We have always been a program that prides itself on speed and explosiveness.
Swasey has said that he wants players to be explosive, meaning they have to be powerful. So of course he wants to make them stronger. Power=(Force x distance)/time. The stronger they are (force) the more powerful they'll be.
Now I have never seen any of the workouts that the football team at the U so I can't say for certain that he's doing a great job or if he could improve on other aspects. But based on the NFLers that come back every year it's safe to see he knows what he's doing. But what do I know I'm haven't even got my degree in this stuff yet. I can ask some strength coaches I know here at Mizzou if they've ever heard of how good the program at the U is. Like any coaching profession there's always networking so I'll see if they know anything.
GO CANES BEAT UNC!

According to Scout, It looks like Reuben Randle will be on campus this weekend.

Here's my take on the S&C thing:
First of, I've been on record saying Swasey gets a raw deal (BTW he was/is offered something in the NFL but some guy doesn't coach there anymore and I think he's stating put because of THAT)
Anyway,
Miami as has been stated a million times doesn't quite have the budget the other schools have.
Does swasey get the on a strength program: check
Does swasey excell at speed and agility training : check
Are the kids given a "diet" to ensure they eat correctly: check
Is there a place where those meals are prepared and ready for them: not so much I think compared to other schools IF there is a case for drop off compared to other programs this may be where there are some legs.
Swasey is a baddass. He's knows his stuff. If he doesn't know, he finds out. The players at Miami are getting quality strength trainning even if that isn't his expertise.
If you look at miamis program without you orange and green glasses you can easily see EVERYTHING has fallen off since 2003.
That is when the 2000 class of kids that Butch brought in left.
I'm telling you..,Coker ruined this program. He recruited the wrong kind of kid, but worse, he turned Miami into a country club.
I've never said Sol and Kehoe were wrong for what they though. They were right. But you can't revolt on the Boss. You can't decide to divide your players like that. Shalala loved Coker. She thought he was the Bowden type and in many ways he's is. She and dee thought it would be just peachy if Miami could keep clappy in place with the wholesome image he represented and compete...that's right, simply compete in the ACC.
Coker convinced him self and everyone in the AD that simply competing in the ACC was going to be tough enough.
Your HC sets the tone for your program.
That kind of tone doesn't make for players that feel like they HAVE to win or else as it was under every other successful coach at Miami.
That type of mentality seeps into the weight room as well.
I'm telling you people..at the time I knew it was bad and the Coker was all wrong for that team but Miami was going ok (9-3) and the excuse was the QB...bunch of 1st rounders leaving...it kind of made sense.
Now everyone can see it was a dissaster.
A lot of those kids still played for Miami this season. It's why that team looks so uptight. They can't not believe what has happened to them in terms of expectations. They played like they were about to lose their job cuz for the very first time they were.
Competition is something Coker never preached.
Competition and intrinsic motivation are they keys to strength and conditioning.
I don't think Swasey is the problem. I do think Miami needs to find a way to ensure these players are eating correctly beyond handing them a notebook of what they should eat. In this day and age every edge helps and proper diet is one way to boost you S&C results.
These are kids...I know for a fact you will see many a player eating fast food, fried food and sweets on a daily basis.
Do I think THATS why Miami has fallen behind...no, not entirely but it is an issue that must be looked at and corrected. Other schools have a place where the player have each meal catered to their specific needs and that a big plus.
I've preached on here that Shannons biggest job has been to change the culture of the team...and he is. Coaching mistakes aside he is absolutey the man for the job. He is correcting his mistakes and will hire a great OC I am sure.
He will also improve his own management failings.
He is, however, doing everything right as it concerns these players, their role in the PROGRAM and what is expected of them. The "coker" kids can't handle getting a drink of water and losing their starting spot. These "Shannon" kids relish that type of feirce competativeness - think Jacory - and will thrive as a result.
This program will thrive again as a result.
S&c will thrive again as a result.
It's not an accident that Miami is actually in the running to land 3 of the top 4 HS players in the country. And it's a legit shot, too (not likely BTW, but an accomplishment none the less) especially crazy to consider after 7 win season.
That's how you should know things are very different at Miami.
This time 3 years ago under coker there were 5 kids committed...FIVE.
Laziness personified right there.
Miami has almost that many already commited for NEXT February.
That type of attitude is infectious and I believe it will make for a more competative weight room and better results.
Swasey is good people, too. He does a great job.
I may be wrong...maybe he sucks. But I look at this thing from a very broad perspective and to me it's easy to see..I see huge differences in a lot things now and soon enough it will translate to wins on the field.
Anyway, that's my very long take on the situation. I've talked to people who adamantly agree and others that aren't so sure. We will see...

One last thing...Estaban, it's true...and all of those kids have a legit interest in being here. That's a HUGE deal.
The only one from that list that has a zero chance of being here is Hall. He's from Gins program up there and they ALL go OSU.
Aside from that there a couple more big time OL that are all but lines up and if Miami can somehow snag one of the RR, OC or AD trio it would be incredible.
I say when Randy gets into their houses with the OC Miami COULD get RR on the spot. Everything I hear from their camp tells me they WANT to be sold on Miami. Randy can do it.
...Richardson is still a long shot but the fact that the coaches won't give up on him has him still interested.

No, but seriously... Being (The Rodney Dangerfield) jokester of Canespace, is OK for me, as I always try to keep it lite and funny, but to be honest, there are many more qualified to be on the list, then me and just to be mentioned as a candidate, is good enough... thanks Solar, coming from you, I appreciate it.
but when not joking around, which is 50 percent of the time, I am speaking from the heart as a fan and although yes, I'll do my research before posting, I don't care about the stats, as much as I care about my feelings about the subject... funny huh

Off color joke... The Boy, the Frog and the Whorehouse... .
A little boy about 12 years old was walking down the sidewalk, dragging a flattened frog on a string behind him. He came up to the doorstep of a whore house and knocked on the door. When the Madam answered it, she saw the little boy and asked what he wanted. He said, "I want to have sex with one of the women inside. I have the money to buy it, and I'm not leaving until I get it." The Madam figured, why not, so she told him to come in. Once in, she told him to pick any of the girls he liked. He asked, "Do any of the girls have any diseases?" Of course, the Madam said, "No!" He said,
"I heard all the men talking about having to get shots after making love with Amber. THAT'S the girl I want." Since the little boy was so adamant and had the money to pay for it, the Madam told him to go to the first room on the right. He headed down the hall dragging the squashed frog behind him. Ten minutes later he came back, still dragging the frog, paid the Madam, and headed out the door! . The Madam stopped him and asked,
"Why did you pick the only girl in the place with a disease, instead of one of the others?" He said, "Well, if you must know, tonight when I get home, my parents are going out to a restaurant to eat, leaving me at home with a baby-sitter. After they leave, my baby-sitter will have sex with me because she just happens to be very fond of cute little boys. She will then get the disease that I just caught. When Mom and Dad get back, Dad will take the baby-sitter home. On the way, he'll jump the baby-sitter's bones, and he'll catch the disease. Then when Dad gets home from the baby-sitters, he and Mom will go to bed and have sex, and Mom will catch it. In the morning when Dad goes to work, the Milkman will deliver the milk, have a quickie with Mom and catch the disease, and HE'S the sonofabitch who ran over my FROG!"
terrible, just terrible...

As far as nutrition goes... That may change. Its not very well known, but UM just put Dr. Lisa Dorfman in charge of nutrition for all the athletes at the University... Not only is she a very good teacher, she's a world class athlete (not an exaggeration) and a very well known nutritionist that has worked with professional athletes, Olympians, etc

Blaming Swasey to me is perhaps the dumbest thing I read on here.
Our guys have ALWAYS been drafted on speed and instinct first.
Plus its easy for our guys to look small last year considering 12 months before they were going to their prom while the guy on the other side of the ball was in his third or fourth year of college.

The staff still has to figure out why the team faded, or tired, maybe even got weaker as the season went along. Most people thought the experience would accumulate and the team would get better as the season progressed. I stll want know if the team continued lifting every 7-10 days during the season? anyone know?

A classic from Manny:
For all of us that like to pretend we know what we're talking about when we jump onto a blog or an internet message board, I learned a lot about Swasey and his program. One, he's a genuinely good person. Two, there probably isn't a strength and conditioning coach in the country who comes better recommended.
Posted by: pb(CSROH09) | January 17, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I want to see the defense in action this coming season, my off beat theory, way out there theory is that Cook was a bad influence. Cook may turn out to be one great coach but my theory is his leadership had most of the guys on D over thinking. Worrie too much about being in this or that and not getting it done. I think the D will improve a lot with play makers on the field minus the over thinking cook. You read, like Reed instinctively knowing and react, making plays. Over thinking is hurtful on D.

Posted by: Canez1 | January 17, 2009 at 11:33 AM
The questions about Swasey, to me, were epitomized in the UNC game. UNC was, man for man, bigger and stronger than we were, especially along the OL and DL. Specifically, UNC's linemen had much bigger and stronger LEGS than our guys. Standing side by side our guys looked like they were standing on stilts and the UNC guys looked like they were standing on tree trunks.
To me, for someone like Jason Fox to NOT be among the biggest and strongest on the team says something is not right with our program.
Maybe Swasey's program is better for the fast, skilled guys.
From my own personal experience with lifting and muscle growth, you have to eat more of everything when you're in a growth phase, and I didn't start lifting serious, heavily and consistently until I was in my late twenties.
So when I read about Forston only eating 3 somewhat normal sized meals a day, I was a little concerned to be honest. He should be eating three or four BIG meals a day, training and lifting the way they do as 17-year old D-I football players.
I understand Swasey doesn't want them to add any fat but they need all those extra calories and nutrients just to grow. Young athletes are secreting enormous amounts of growth hormone at that age. That combined with the extreme number of calories they burn training in SoFl heat makes it essential to replace all that just to maintain your weight, let alone grow.
We'll see.
Posted by: Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer | January 17, 2009 at 11:36 AM
ps when guy are looking up to a leader and the leader cannot tackle and make plays the imitation sucks. Now, imitate Ed Reed , the U needs to have leaders that raise the level of play not leaders that cannot get it done. good by last of the cokers hello RS guys.
Posted by: dlu | January 17, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Of course the counterargument is that the guys Medioker brought in just weren't serious football players physically or mentally, and that no matter what the program was they would flounder.
I don't know. We'll see.
I do know we haven't looked as big and strong since 2000. Just go back and watch the FSU game.
Is it the players or is it the program??
We looked softer in 2002. Then again that was the second year of Mediokrity.

DZ8, not so fast my friend. That team was the last Miami team to be out muscled for a long, long time. By 1986 we were physically dominating teams and that became our hallmark style, ALONG WITH speed and precision, for the next seven years.
Fast forward to 2000. Again, 3 years after being physically dominated by a bunch of schools we were physically dominant again, for the next 2-3 years.
Players or program????
