When you think of "The Jack", several different images may come to mind.
There is Jack Daniels of whiskey fame. Made the same way for decades by only a select handful of master distillers up in the hills of Tennessee this magic potion is the favorite of many. Charcoal filtered for smoothness and aged in charred oak barrels for flavor, a shot of Jack or a Jack and Coke is always a popular choice.
There is of course Jack Bauer of "24" fame. Keiffer Sutherland plays secret agent Jack Bauer who by definition is the only guy that can take on a whole army all by himself armed only with a Q-tip and totally dominate the opposition. Well him and maybe Allen Bailey.
Then there is the swashbuckling pirate known as Captain Jack Sparrow. This famous Jack, played in the Pirates of the Carribean movies by the versatile and quirky Johnny Depp, became a legend in his own right as he sailed into history and the hearts of women everywhwere aboard his pirate ship.
Many years ago, legendary songwriter and "Piano Man" Billy Joel sang about a certain Captain Jack. The lyrics from that song read like this: "Captain Jack will get you high tonight, just a litlle push and you'll be smiling, Captain will get you by tonight, and take you to your special island." Billy has a way with words.
But for University of Miami basketball fans there is no Jack more famous, more respected or more revered than the one and only Jack McClinton.
Also known as McClutch and McMoney for his incredible knack for hitting the big shot to win the game, the Jack Attack was single handedly responsible for keeping the Canes in most games in 2009 with his ability to score at will when called upon.
Jack is among the all-time leading scorers at UM, holds the ACC record for three point shot percentage, recently won the three point shooting competition and was selected as an all conference player in 2009.
For those accomplishments he should be recognized by Hurricane fans.
So we suggest that U pick up a shot glass filled with Jack, play a little Billy Joel and make like a pirate as we raise a toast to a Hurricane legend.
Canes fans salute U Jack McClinton!
Happy Saturday morning!

White Pitches No. 4 UNC Past No. 7 Miami, 3-0: Tar Heels' ace tosses a complete game one-hitter against UM Friday night
April 17, 2009
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The seventh-ranked University of Miami baseball team dropped the first game of this weekend's series at No. 4 North Carolina, 3-0, Friday night in front of a capacity crowd of 4,100 at Boshamer Stadium.
The Hurricanes (26-11, 11-8 ACC) managed just one hit all night off UNC starter Alex White, who struck out 10 in tossing his first career complete game shut-out for the Tar Heels (29-10, 11-7 ACC). White allowed just two base-runners all night - a Dave DiNatale single in the third and a Yasmani Grandal walk in the eighth.
Miami starter Chris Hernandez (4-3) suffered the loss despite turning in one of his strongest outings of the season. Hernandez allowed just two earned runs - his second-lowest total of the season - on eight hits while walking two and striking out six in 6 2/3 innings. Daniel Miranda came on in relief of Hernandez and held UNC scoreless over the final 1 1/3 innings.

Hurricanes Position Themselves for Final Day of ACC Championships
April 17, 2009
CORAL GABLES - The University of Miami men's and women's track and field teams have set themselves up for a strong finish Saturday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The final day of the three-day will get under way at noon at UM's Cobb Stadium on Saturday.
With the second fastest time in school history, behind only Lauryn Williams in the 100-meter dash, Murielle Ahoure advanced to Saturday's final with a time of 11.34 seconds. The three-time All-American followed that feat with a 22.98 second performance in the 200-meter dash. Both showings were regional qualifying times in her first attempt at an outdoor individual event as a Hurricane.
Kristy Whyte finished right behind Ahoure in both events. The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native and 2008 ACC Outdoor Performer of the Year, raced to new career-highs in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes to join Ahoure in the finals. In the 100-meters, Whyte won her preliminary heat with a time of 11.56 seconds, while her time of 23.38 seconds was the third fastest time of the prelims. Whyte also punched her ticket to the NCAA South Regionals with her performances.
"Kristy and Murielle were very solid in their openers," said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. "They were very impressive and I'm looking forward to see what happens tomorrow."
The 100-meter final is set to begin at 5:20 p.m. and the 200-meter final will start at 6:20 p.m. Both Ahoure and Whyte are expected to participate in the 4x100-meter relay as well at 4 p.m.
The ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be free to the public on Saturday. Spectator entrances will be located along the west side of Cobb Stadium along San Amaro Drive. The official schedule of events and other information is located on the ACC Track and Field Championships website.

Top-Seed Miami Downs #9 Wake Forest, 4-0
Hurricanes blow into semifinals with fourth-straight sweep
April 17, 2009
Cary, N.C. - The top-seeded Miami Hurricanes (22-3) blew past ninth-seed Wake Forest (13-12) Friday morning, registering a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals of this year's ACC Women's Tennis Championships in Cary, N.C. The event is taking place at the Cary Tennis Park in the RDU Triangle.
For UM, the victory marked the fourth consecutive sweep of a conference opponent, and the second in as many tries against Wake Forest.
The Hurricanes, ranked No. 6 in this week's Campbell's/ITA national poll, used four All-ACC players at the top of the doubles and singles lineup against the 40th-ranked Demon Deacons. Miami collected the first and second flight doubles matches to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

McClinton Wins 3-Point Competition
McClinton defeats seven other competitors -- and the top woman - in Detroit.
April 2, 2009
DETROIT, MICH. - The University of Miami's Jack McClinton won the men's three-point championship at the 21st Annual College Slam Dunk and Three Point Championships in Detroit on Thursday evening at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
McClinton finished with 22 points in the final to cruise past the hometown favorite Erik Kangas of Oakland, who tallied 17 points in the final round.
Players shot from five different locations around the perimeter, receiving a point for each three-pointer made - with two-points earned when sinking the final three-point attempt - the "money ball" - from each location.
The two-time All-ACC First Team selection was among eight of the nation's top three-point shooters selected to compete in the competition that aired on ESPN as a prelude to the NCAA Final Four. Joining McClinton was Jimmy Baron (Rhode Island), John Grotberg (Grinnell), Craig Moore (Northwestern), Matt Lawrence (Missouri), Alex Ruoff (West Virginia), Booker Woodfox (Creighton) and Kangas.

Scouting Report on Baby Tovar: The kid has great potential and still plenty of room to grow and fill out his frame. Has some "baby fat" that will shed easily with proper diet workout routines at the next level. He has good vision, great hands and quick feet. A definite five star propect at any position!

Also about the Highlight video I will say this.
1. How the hell did we lose some of those games??? We rarely if ever got BEAT. We lost games. I have to agree with Carlos here, if were semi-potent on offense we easily only lose maybe 1-2 game last year.
2. Don't ever think RS is not the guy. He's exactly what we need. He bleeds it more than any of us as finds. His speeches in the game had me ready to go to war.
Get the video guys...You'll love it!

PLEASE EVERYONE GIVE DURAND SCOTT SOME LOVE TONIGHT BY WATCHING HIM PUT ON A CLINIC TONIGHT @ 8PM ON ESPN2...in the Jordan Brand Classic...this will be our first glimpse into what he will show us next year...
one more tidbit...there is a player on his AAU team that is also considering da U for the 2010 signing class...

bg...there were highlights last season? LOL
We lost last year because:
1. We were always on our heels on defense, always palying from behind;
2. Our run defense was weak and our running game never really got established;
3. Our offensive line was soft and our QB threw too many INTs;
4. We never could get any INTs on defense.
5. Our offensive coordinator was not very good at calling plays and our scheme was awful.

Well said and I could not agree with you more. Tell me this though have we improved at any of these areas? Just curious because I have not seen them play in person since last year.

When are U writing the Arthur Brown... Looking for more to write about and was thinking July/Aug... when he starts exploding and I have something to yell from the roof tops about!!!
The kid has so much potential to dominate the hole... he just needs time to find the patterned rhythm
Posted by: Cat5Cane | April 18, 2009 at 02:28 PM
NORML...well let's see:
1. Remains to be seen. IF we can score often and score early then this problem (always playing from behind) will be fixed. This depends on Miracle Whip, JaScory and getting big plays (quick six) from the WRs. The offensive scheme alone is 1000 times better and the play calling cannot be any worse so early indications are YES.
2. The run defense looked better this Spring but you will not know until we face GT in week 2. The DL is SURE to be improved with more players, more seasoning and experience and better coaching by Hurtt and a better scheme from Lovett. The LBs are hard to predict outside os Spence. McCarthy has to come back and stay health and Sharpton or Brown has to fill the MLB spot effectively. The safety position is fine but I do NOT like Phillips starting he is S L O W. CB remains a concern. They are fast and smart but and they are also small and soft and cannot tackle at all.
3. OL is better but not good. Jacory will throw fewer INTs than Marve.
4. Not sure?
5. We will be miles ahead in scheme and execution on offense this year. Miracle Whip is the real deal.

Canes vs UNC
Posted by: canechic | April 18, 2009 at 02:32 PM
Oh and #2 above our running game will be better because:
1. Mike James and Lamar Miller both will play and will push JJ and Coop. And don't forget about Berry, he will play also and will provide a boost in short yardage plays (Loco's favorite player).
2. JaScory and the WRs will hook up DOWNFIELD and score which will move the safties away from the LOS.
3. Our new offensive scheme and The Whip calling the right plays at the right time.

Miami Advances to ACC Finals with 4-0 Win over FSU: Hurricanes sweep Seminoles storming into ACC Championship
April 18, 2009
Cary, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Miami Hurricanes (23-3) took a 4-0 win over in-state rival and 17th-ranked Florida State (16-7) on Saturday in the ACC Semifinals, rolling into Sunday's ACC Women's Tennis Championship match at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The `Canes prepare for their fourth ACC Championship match in their first five years of joining the league.
"It's always a good day when you can beat FSU," stated UM head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, who avenged last year's ACC Quarterfinal loss to the Seminoles. "We fought through some nerves a little bit in doubles, and got off to a good start in singles. They're an emotional team, and for us to get off to a good start is necessary."
Miami, the top seed in this year's tournament, opened up the day with a 1-0 lead having collected the doubles point in two-of-three matches.

Bringing over the from the last blog, since I didn't pay attention to the new one being up:
A walk, two singles, a wild pitch and an error, and the Canes already with 2 in to begin the game. Another walk to Grandal, and we have runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, still in the Canes 1st. Already we have a different game than yesterday at least.
I'm not going to have time to post on an ongoing basis today, but I'll update if/as time permits. The munchkins definitely are a bigger priority, unless it's the CWS anyway! :)
FWIW, the Marlins scored 3 in the ninth to tie their game at 6. The Nats and fish are still in extra innings as I type.

Single by DiNatale, another run in, 3-0 Canes with runners on 1st and 2nd and two down, top of the first still. Nazario is up.
Posted by: JCane | April 18, 2009 at 04:22 PM
Okay. To the bottom of the first we go, Canes up 3-0.
Gotta run. Catch up with y'all later.
Posted by: JCane | April 18, 2009 at 04:24 PM
David Gutierrez is pitching today for the Canes. So far, so good. Two innings done, still 3-0 Canes.
The Marlins pick up the win today in amazing come-from-behind fashion, getting 3 in the ninth and 3 in the 11th to win behind a 2 run shot in the 9th and 3 run shot in the 11th, both by J. Hermida. The season is long, but 10-1 and building a nice cushion in the division ain't a bad way to start. If we think the Marlins have nobody at their games, take a look at Washington...
Okay, Hagerty walks, nobody out and Herrmann is up in the top of the 3rd.
I'll check back later.
Posted by: JCane | April 18, 2009 at 04:53 PM
JCane...nice work here on the baseball coverage. I watched the Marlins incredible comeback win.
