I am from a small area in Central Florida that produces great high school football talent. I’m from the city of Merritt Island which is located in Brevard County, Florida where my high school holds the honor of having the second longest consecutive playoff appearance streak in the State behind only Jacksonville Bolles high school.
As a HUGE Hurricanes fan I can tell you that Brevard County has produced some great Hurricane talent: Bubba McDowell, Hurlie Brown, Darryl Spencer, Derrick Ham, Matt Walters, and now Ramon Cookie Buchanan. Four of those players were not only major contributors at Miami but they also won National Championships while attending UM.
I have also spent a lot of time in the City of Miami while living, staying and making frequent trips to the 305. I also have come across some interesting people and players while attending many games involving Miami, FAU, FIU and even some high school teams in Miami. I can truly say that Miami is a city in itself, there is nothing else like it. With all the high profile actors, actresses, musicians, pro athletes, sport venues, beaches, good looking people, clubs, shopping malls, real estate, etc. who wouldn’t want to live in Miami or play at The U?
Along with that, it’s a great place for any rising star or elite high school players to market themselves with all of the football camps, recruiting networks and spring game classics. For example, it’s been a common trend recently for many high school players to say that they’re getting recruited or have offers from UM when it’s not even the case. Remember Brian Butler said another player of HIS (LOL) was getting recruited by Miami and that later came out to be false?
Another trend that happens to be recent is the exploitation of players who do have an offer from Miami, but yet are playing the media to get more attention. They are looking for the fame to add to their name, guaranteed promises and maybe other things that come along with their Letter of Intent (can U say Patrick John$on-Peter$on)
I think in most cases the majority of kids already know where they would like to attend college and could be signed by the end of January. With that said, I love the approach and the handling of the recruiting process by Coach Shannon and the University of Miami staff. And this is in spite of the fact that we are starting to see a lot of inconsistent and confusing comments from South Florida recruits who seem to waver every week when they go from saying “I grew up a HUGE Hurricanes fan and that’s all I used to watch growing up” to “well I like Miami but I’m going to look around and take all of my visits.”
Then there are those surprises by some players supposedly committed to UM who pull the hat trick on signing day and go elsewhere. There were numerous players over the last couple of years that did this. And what makes matters worse is that now even some high school coaches are getting into this thing. Remember the coach from Deerfield Beach saying “Miami is not recruiting him and he would fit in perfectly in their system.” Then Miami offered that kid and where did he end up going?
I’m starting to wonder are the Hurricanes paying too much attention to their local area high schools instead of getting the best players in Florida or across the Country. Are the Canes forgetting about Central and North Florida kids? Don’t get me wrong, I think South Florida has the some of the best talent. Sometimes they are bigger, faster, and stronger; just not always.
I just don’t want the players like Ray Lewis (Lakeland), Clinton Portis (Gainesville), Warren Sapp (Apopka) to go elsewhere. Could you imagine this year if Ray Ray, Dye, (Sanford) Mr. Mike “Media love” James (Davenport) or Jamal “Put me anywhere” Reid (Mayo) had not signed with UM?
So you have to ask yourself: Is the University of Miami football staff too quick to give a South Florida recruit an offer before players from another area of the State or the Country? I’m hearing a lot of kids saying why they like this school or that school, but does it really makes sense? Why would a TE that played in a high school that has a shot gun and passing offense go to a mostly running SEC school that doesn’t pass to a TE?
You may know that there are head coaches at other universities that are trying to sway recruits away from UM saying: “Miami only cares about South Florida talent and they treat their local players differently.” I believe Miami could prevent this negative rumor by recruiting the entire State instead of appearing to concentrate all of their efforts on The Bottom.
I remember a time when certain kids wanted to be a part of The U no matter how many games were won or lost or how many players were drafted in the first round of the NFL. It’s simply not like that anymore. UM must adapt to the changes.
My opinion is that Miami can’t afford to any longer solely focus on “locking down South Florida” and hope to get it done. While they may want to continue to focus on South Florida they must also make sure to expand their focus on the entire State!
The bottom line: The City of Miami is not bigger, or better, than the whole State of Florida. Randy Shannon and Clint Hurtt would be wise to remember that.

I just want to win and have players that bleed orange and green and want to be part of this period! No B.S. No Divos etc.. LOL! No matter where they're from!

Great article. The reality is; we just can't get them all. We need to lock down south Florida, The State of Miami, and then cherry pick from elsewhere in Florida and then the nation.
When we are getting urban to break his cell phone because of Cookie, getting CJ Holton right from under the seminoles nose, and getting 9 out of 10 of the SoFla guys we want, we are doing all right. We just CANNOT get them all.

321 real good article
Prepare to be second guessed by the guys that belive in their hearts the only real Canes come from Miami.
“Miami only cares about South Florida talent and they treat their local players differently.”
I think there is weight to that.
The poor play by Kyle Wright, Kirby Freeman, and the issues with Marve right after that make it easier to root for local hero Jacory, and I for one am on that wagon.
I think it's valid that kids from outside Miami see the bond that players and coaches from Miami share.
I think Whipple and Lovett will open more doors for players from outside Dade/Broward also.
Write more stuff that was good.

I saw that and questioned Omar if he's trying to start trouble. I don't know if he's being serious or not. You gotta figure it is a big conspiracy theory type thing. Randy stocks the team then Tubberville comes in and cleans up. I think Omar just wants to mess with The Legion, it worked.

Concerning the recruitment of future H.S. ballers playing for the Hurricanes someday. Especially those from around the nation.
It's not that easy of an equation to figure out. Simply because in the eyes of these H.S. player's parents, Miami, F-L-A still has a P.R. IMAGE, which, too a certain degree, affects these same parents on whether they want junior to go to Miami, F-L-A.
That's just the reality of the situation regarding the H.S. recruiting game today when the Hurricanes are involved. Because as Buddha once said..."perception is reality baby."
Posted by: macjones de Albuquerque | April 13, 2009 at 08:46 PM
The other part of recruiting is just reality as far as geographical distance.
Most people want to be close to their families. Just think of all the people you know who went to college how many went further than 5-6 hour drive away? Most people go to a local, in-state school. Even with the scholarship they still need to have that connection to their people.
Hurtt even said as much in an interview with Manny. They are not going to waste their time trying to get someone who is more than a couple of hours away from a major airport. It is too much to expect parents to drive a couple of hours and then take connecting flights to visit their kids.
We will go after the ones who really show an interest in us but other than that our base will come from The State of Miami. Remember recruiting is not an exact science. What I like about what we are doing now is not going after the headline grabiing, "can't-miss" prospects. We are going after the ones that show some heart, and come from winning programs. Football is a team sport and you can keep you individual accomplishments (sounds like Bryce Browns' high school coach).

two things that are constant with omar
1. He will never be able to spell or proof read
2. He never got over the fact Randy shannon didn't fawn over him like Coker did.

3. He still sucks

And really this is for the legion...
Miami, under Shannon, will NOT EVER pay "too much attention" to any one area. I'd tell you to look it up, but you can only go by what Rivals and Scout tells you - they only know what the kids say - but if the U put out such things you would see that the offers already out are far and way NOT focussed only on Dade.
In fact, there are kids Miami is high on Dade that have yet to be offered.
"Why," you ask?
Because evaluation takes precedence over "showing love."
Bottom line is this:
Miami will offer the kids they want. They will target the kids they need and charm the ones that need some charming NO MATTER WHERE they live, so long as they are a "Miami" type player.
It just so happens that type of player usually resides right here in south Fla.
And it's no secret that most kids don't want to stray too far to go to school. It's also no secret to guys that know that some kids, even ones from here and even ones that prosper elsewhere would NEVER make it on a proper UM roster.
So let's ALL take a deep breath...relax and realize it's APRIL!!!!!
Thank you!
Miami will get the kids they want and lose a couple too...so what? EVERY school does. When Miami starts winning all of this talk won't matter.
Posted by: The Truth | April 13, 2009 at 09:03 PM
Solar,
You got that right. And for Miami to prosper that's what the balance of the roster should look like.
As long as Miami has been winning that's what the roster has looked like.

One last thing on what 321 touched on...
Again, the recruiting sites post what the kids and their people say as fact. The university can not discuss targets. Period.
So if a kid says he has a Miami offer it's not like Miami can verify that or not. Nor will they cuz, really...who cares?
But nowadays with the Internet this info gets blown up so much it's good for a kid to lie and say whatever he can to keep Miami in his mouth.
Even if the lie is he has an offer. Even if it's to say he's got Miami in his top 3 when he's never actually spoken to a coach.
Yeah...it's like that now.
Posted by: The Truth | April 13, 2009 at 09:18 PM
Great write up 321
The reality is though, while there are gems in the rest of the state, there's just a higher concentration of talent (possibly because there's a higher concentration of people and therefore focus) down in south florida. Its like that from Palm Beach on down. doesnt mean there's not talent elsewhere, its just not as concentrated

>>>>>
321, nice job, but brother the point is THOSE KIDS DID COME TO THE U.
So how is Team Shannon overlooking the rest of the State of Miami?
Shannon said they would "attack the whole state of FL" in his first press conference. Has he and his Team done anything to the contrary??
Seriously. Would you be saying ANY of this if external influences hadn't changed Bryce and Orson's decisions?? Things that had nothing to do with Shannon.
Team Shannon has it covered. Of that you can be certain. And like Truth said, we'll lose a few here and there, but we'll also steal a few every year.
As long as they have the Miami Mentality, like Vaughn Telemaque, Buchanon and RR, we really don't need to worry much.
And we all better get used to kids NOT coming to Miami because the competition and the mentality are too strong. It's going to happen because that's the way Hurricane Football was built.
What did Hurtt say??
"WE'RE LOOKING FOR BOSSES. WE'RE LOOKING FOR HAWGS, not just great individual talents."
That's the formula. It's proven. And it's going to be proven again now that we have a staff full of BOSSES and HAWGS. haha

Ok, 321Canes, how many players from brevard we let get away that became all world talent elsewhere. You already know their is a bias against Miami players for the hall of fame, in college for sure, that's why 1 of the first thing out of brian blades mouth when he got inducted into the college football hall of fame is that he should not be the only Hurricane on stage right now and the 1st one from 80's to just be gettign in.
Now let's think about the nfl, not to many Florida guys get in, epecially Miami. So while you sounding a lil frustrated the question is, how can you complain about the way this staff is recruiting now, when they are getting the type talent we are use to to come in, but 6 years pryor to that, when we really was getting under par talent, when the complaints would have semed justified, it's foolishness right now to sound critical and to try and tell UM to wake up, you can't be serious. Did manny's article say sound the alarm, outside forces are invading brevard county, hell no.
You compare the last 2 classes where they had full recruiting season to do their thang, you see the talent that was brought in, shannon knows what boundaries needs to be crossed, no need to start camping out all over the state when alot of players across the state mentally won't be able to take it.
Go back to the gator game, you know why that game went the way it did, because regardless of youth and inexpereince, the heart of the players from DADE COUNTY and the mentality of the players that have come in don't care who they play or when they play em, they coming to win again everytime. All we neded was an oc to match that mentality and the so called national champions would've gotten their azz whooped, CANE STYLE!
