Top of the 6th vs. VTech, UM ahead 2-1, with all runs coming in the first. Chris Hernandez is still on the hill for the Canes, and thus far has only given up one hit. The hit was a double in the first. It hurt though, as it came between 2 Ks, but then he stole 3rd, promptly coming home on a wild pitch. Same guy who hit the double, Bumbry for VTech(don't know if he's related to the old O's outfielder, Al), walked in the 6th (second walk given up by Hernandez tonight). On first with one out, he got picked off. Now with 2 outs, the next batter walks, so the pickoff may have helped stave off a big inning as Hernandez may be starting to tire a bit. Domecus for VTech tries to get something going, takes off for 2nd. Sit down! Nailed at second, the 6th is done for Tech. To the Canes half of the 6th we go, still up 2-1.

It isn't often that you see two baserunners picked off in the same inning. Both guys were pitcher to 1st to the guy covering 2nd to nail the runners and get out of what could have been a rough inning.
For those interested, the Canes' runs in the 1st came off of a Lawson single, stolen base, Hagerty triple to knock him in, and Herrmann groundout sacrifice to score Hagerty. There it stands.
Bottom of the 6th, and a new pitcher is in for Tech. Grandal leads off with an infield groundout, 1 down. H. Martinez is now at bat. 3-0 count,....and now the count is full. Payoff pitch: pops up, foul ball, and out to the 1B. 2 down, up comes Teddy Blackman. Off to a quick 1-2 count. Infield out, inning done. To the Hokies' 7th we go.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:10 PM
No problem, Solar. I may have to take a break in a few minutes though.
Hernandez is still pitching, and the first batter...out at first. The Canes now take out Hernandez and bring in Miranda with one out.
On a couple of side notes, the fish are ahead of the Phils 3-0 in the 7th, but the Phillies have 2 men on...okay, the Phils are done in the 7th, still down to the Marlins by 3.
Very little was discussed regarding the highly rated hoops recruiting class of Haith's. I believe it was rated #16 for now, pending a few high profile guys finishing up and signing. It would be great to see them somehow pull in Wall.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Still in the Hokies 7th, flyball out for out #2, and then a single. Miranda has a 2-1 count on Seaborn of Tech. Now 3-1.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:22 PM
Liner for an out, Tech's inning is done. DiNatale will be leading off the UM 7th.
One down on a K. Nazario is coming to the plate.
Ah, I just noticed we have a turd who is obviously lost joining us. Welcome. If I were a turd I wouldn't want to stay on an FU site either.
Nazario with a K. Lawson coming up with 2 outs.

Byrd/Spence hands down
Posted by: 8th Man in da Box | April 24, 2009 at 09:32 PM
Lawson has 2 of UM's 6 hits so far tonight. Tech obviously is concerned. He walks, bringing up Ryan Jackson. 2-1 count, with Lawson now at 2nd on his 2nd stolen base of the night. Uh-oh. Lawson tries to take 3rd and is nailed. Inning over. Tech is coming up in the top of the 8th, still down 2-1 with neither team hitting much tonight (6 for UM and now 2 for VT).
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:32 PM
A quick 2 outs, and now in comes Bellamy.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:34 PM
Marlins are still up 3-0 in the bottom half (Marlins are at home) of the 8th.
3-2 count with Bellamy pitching. Reed for VTech walks, bringing up Bumbry. Off to a quick 1-2 count.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:40 PM
The runner takes off, but Bumbry goes down on strikes. Up come the Canes in the bottom of the 8th, Ryan Jackson returning to the plate and still up by 1.

Posted by: solarcane | April 24, 2009 at 09:44 PM
Jackson is out, Hagerty comes to the plate. He flies out to 2nd. Herrmann is up.
The Marlins are still up by 3 in the ninth.
Herrman now with a 3-1 count...and he walks, bringing up Grandal. Wild pitch, Herrmann to 2nd. 2-1 count, 2 out.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:52 PM
Another wild pitch, to 3rd goes Herrmann, and Grandal now a full count. I don't suppose Tech would mind throwing just one more wild pitch before this inning ends?
Here comes the pitch, and Grandal hits it deep to left. It's going, going, and it's OUTTA HERE for a 2 run dinger! 4-1 Canes.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:55 PM
Martinez singles, so we've got another 2 out baserunner.
The Marlins are starting to self-destruct, now up 3-1 and the bases full of Phillies in the 9th.
Melendres is up for the Canes. Whaddya know? There's the 3rd wild pitch I just asked for, albeit a hair later. Martinez goes to 2nd.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:57 PM
Marlins closer is not so good, 7- 3 phillies
Posted by: canechic | April 24, 2009 at 09:58 PM
Melendres grounds out to end the inning. To the Tech 9th we go, with a little breathing room now.
Posted by: JCane | April 24, 2009 at 09:59 PM
CC:
What do you want? The Marlins shouldn't be expected to give up fewer than 7 in the 9th? :( There's still a long season ahead for them, and their weaknesses are gradually being exposed.
I've gotta go in 5 minutes, so let's end this sucker, Bellamy.
Batter 1: K
Batter 2: K
Batter 3: 0-2 count.....lines out. Ballgame! The Canes take game 1, 4-1.
Have a good night all.

I'm not a baseball fans but why do managers feel the need to go a "closer" when the reliever is doing pretty damn good. wouldn't be the same as taking out the backup rb even though he's outplaying the starting rb. Talk about choking...the marlins did that big time tonite.
