As everyone surely knows by now, your Miami Hurricanes, yes those same Hurricanes that had in years past completely dominated on the field and in the NFLU draft, had exactly ONE player selected by the entire NFL over the last two days of fun and frolicking in New York.
As expected, the Canes did not have a player selected in the first round, a feat they had accomplished for the past consecutive 14 years. They did not have a player selected in rounds 1-5 either. In fact, they had only one player, Spencer Adkins, selected overall in the seven full rounds of the 2009 draft.
Adkins, a seldom used linebacker who had 20 tackles in limited playing time in 2008, was selected as the #176 pick in the sixth round. He was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons right after the Chiefs selected Quinten Lawrence from McNeese State at #175 and just before Don Carey of Norfolk State who went to the Browns at #177. Apparently, Adkins worked his way into the draft by being a workout machine and testing out very well at the NFL combine and in private workouts.
Bruce Johnson, who many thought might be the Canes first player chosen was not drafted. Glenn "I may not tackle well but I can really" Cook was rumored to have been seen launching his new career on the cooking channel making a dish called "roasted citrus garlic thyme chicken."
The ACC was well represented with four of the top ten picks in the first round being from the conference.
But instead of having the now famous "U" symbol on their helmet these players wore an "M" or a "W" or some other silly letter on their protective head gear.
Wake Forest, Maryland, Virgina, BC and UNC all had players selected in round one. Even some slacker Big Least teams like Rutgers and UConn had first round picks too.
And, to make matters worse, even teams like Monmouth College, William & Mary, Cal Poly, Rice, Furman, Western illinois, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Ball State, San Jose State, Richmond, Weber State, St. Paul's College, Stillman College, Nichols State, Abilene Christian and Temple all had players selected before the first Hurricane player was drafted.
OUCH, that hurts!
So what does all this tell us? Here are some facts that we believe to be true:
- That "The Truth" was in fact, and for possibly the first time in his life, telling the truth. As a result of failed recruiting under the now denounced and dispatched Larry Coker, the Canes had no talent on the field over the last two years. The NFL draft just said so.
- That the lack of talent on the field apparently has this strange yet direct and significant impact on the team's ability to win games. And all along we thought it might be coaching? Imagine that!
- Carlos, I hate to break it to you but Patrick Nix or Bill Young may not be to blame after all. Well, Bill Young at least. You can still blame Nix.
-
Finally, that high school football talent has now officially, definitely and strategically been distributed across the entire spectrum of teams at all levels of college football. The days of "parity" are clearly upon us. And, there's no turning back now.

Parity is upon us until we return to kicking as$.
Coker was the right man for the job at that time. He wasn't the right man to sustain the program.
Willie Williams really only had one f up since his high school days. Two if you count transfering from The U.
I wish Coker the best of luck at UTSA. I wish Cook/Romeo/Dixon/Johnson/Armour/ and especially Youngblood and all the rest, the best of luck in their football careers and lives in general.
Could easily see Cook returning to The U as a graduate asistant.

Happy Birthday the other day.
Got done watching the 2008 highlights tape and I didn't get as big a kick out of the wooo wooo scene. It was great to see the players interacting with Shannon though. I thought one of Shannons faults might be being too strict and causing the players to play tight. I don't think that is the case anymore.
In the begining of the tape I noticed highlights from Moncur and Colin McCarthy. It will be good to have them back this year. It is a real shame we didn't have our co-ordinators last year so we can hit this early, brutal schedule at full speed.
Like Cav said once,(paraphrasing here) 'Our growth won't be gradual, incremental, baby steps. It will be exponential with the talent we are aquiring.'
The O line needs to jell. The young, talented players need to become veteran, talented players. It's like the scene in Independence Day when the aliens are gradually getting their warships into place. Almost there.
We will be back next year, but 2010 is when we'll dominate.

DZ8,
It was hilarious to me because everyone see's Randy as so up tight and not the have fun type and think the players are fearful of him. That seemed like a group that was very comfortable with their head guy. Also to me it was just so funny how he said it...Ahhhhhhhh, I feel good today (rolling his shoulders) and the players started woooing and laughing and smiling. I just like it. Maybe I hyped it toooo much and then when you see it, its not as big as I made it sound. HAHAHAHA!

I don't know about parody in D1 but it's plain to see that now more than ever everyone has good players on the roster.
Obviously, Miami did not. The NFL will draft you if you're a player...
What does it say that a Miami team sent 1...ONE kid into the show as a drafted player?
So all you arguers go on and on about coaches and S&C and blah blah blah....Miami was a waistland under Clappy Von Clapenstein and this year more than ever proved it. These kids where the heart of his recruiting style.
Terrible.

Epps - if he's all healed up and it looks like he is - will draft well.
CMac and Sharpton are draftable but they need to show something this year...
Sharpton needs to show ability to diagnose the play faster and he needs to get back in coverage when he's asked to.
Cmac needs to stay healthy and tackle well in space...he has other issues but those will keep him down in the draft.
The Heat are back to sucking a*s again and I've got a decent drive ahead so I might be out...they have 6 minutes to keep me interested.

Trivia question:
How long does it take a major league team to go from 10 games over 500 to 500 on the nose?
Answer:
per the Marlins, apparently 10 games. Only 3 more to go to make this a reality. Yuch.
Now we'll see what the Heat still has left in them.
Re: Coker's game day coaching:
I still think the offensive calls vs. OSU in the championship game were atrocious. UM clearly had more talent and obviously nearly won. If they had more creative offensive playcalling that game, the flag wouldn't have mattered. OSU's D plan was to stack up McGahee and make Dorsey beat them. Dorsey was definitely not on target that night, so what did we do about it? How many times did we try something else to take the pressure off of simple McGahee strength runs? How about an end around, an option play, someone else running the ball, some easier passes.....UM only stayed close in the game due to superior talent, as they clearly had an inferior game plan that day.
Only my opinion.

That boy has GF "issues" along with "daddysupmyass issues"
But his grades are a problem cuz he doesn't really think he should have to be there. The "rumors" are almost ALL true and that's unfortunate for him because his father, instead of pointing fingers, really should try to get his sons balls back from his woman of the moment and sit his dumb a*s down with a tutor.
After he's done with those 2 things he needs to put his foot so far up his a*s that Bobby Drama could tie daddies shoe through his teeth.
Teach that dumb a*s some responsibility and respect.

Bosher and McCarthy
Posted by: tortugacane | April 27, 2009 at 11:15 PM
From The Palm Beach Post:
Lots of people are probably surprised that Spencer Adkins was drafted at all - much less in the sixth round by the Atlanta Falcons - but the Hurricanes’ former back-up middle linebacker isn’t among them.
Adkins, watching from his mother’s home in Naples, said he was expecting something to happen when the Falcons’ selection - the 176th overall - came up in the draft. Most draft analysts viewed Adkins as a premium free agent, and certainly no better than a seventh round pick.
“I had a good feeling I was going to be picked,” said Adkins, who visited with the Falcons’ coaching staff in Atlanta recently. “I wasn’t listening to all the outside things. Then it happened.”
Adkins was the only UM player taken over seven rounds, marking the fewest Hurricanes selected in one draft since 1980. Cornerback Bruce Johnson, who draftniks viewed as the most draftable UM player, was not picked.
Adkins probably wouldn’t have been drafted either if not for an eye-catching performance at UM’s Pro Day in February. Among other things, Adkins ran 40 yards in 4.43 seconds, broad jumped 10-2, vertical jumped 36 1/2 inches and bench pressed 225 pounds a total of 30 times.
“It obviously boosted me up,” Adkins said of Pro Day. “But from what the Atlanta coaches told me, they always liked what they saw before that. That just added flame to the fire.”
Maybe so, but Adkins didn’t have a lot of shining moments as a collegian to impress the NFL. He made five starts as a junior, but those games included forgettable losses to Oklahoma, Virginia and Georgia Tech. Last season, Adkins played exclusively in a reserve role and registered four of his career five sacks while being used as an inside blitzer on passing situations.
Adkins is physically impressive. Although he stands only 5-11, every ounce of his 238 pounds is solid steel. But those physical attributes didn’t amount to great production during his UM career.
”I didn’t achieve what I expected,” Adkins said Sunday. “I could have done a lot more. But that’s all in the past and I’m looking forward right now.”

My picks are:
Epps and Spence!!
I rewatched all the Canes losses this past season... We had a damn good football team. We went toe to toe with the National Champs, If Kayne made that catch we win the UNC game.. If we stopped FSU from getting that damn first down, or if we stayed healthy and had some veterans step up(goodbye Cokers bitches).. A common theme is that Marve and Harris both had to improvise on every play because Nix was terrible. I can not wait for the whipple attack. Defense will be better with more talent and experience!! We get through the first four games and we are going to have one hell of a season!! GO CANES!!
