I think we as fans consistently misjudge this me against the world mentality for something unique to Miami when all it is acting like a team (swagger was the unique thing we brought to it, but working hard is inherent in all those who want to succeed. Shwarma, poverty and whatever "underprivileged" is supposed to mean HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MENTALITY THAT MADE MIAMI DOMINANT.

If poverty and being "underprivileged" was all it took we would've seen something like Miami way back at the turn of the century in the midwest, south and OH-PA.

You need to talk to Calvin about this point because he answered all my questions about what made those 1980s teams so different. It's deeper than you apparently think it is, and it has nothing to do with the university

And if you missed the NFL's dislike of the spread, something that was news to me, don't take it personally. I wasn't calling you out, just pointing it out.

And if you really think the country people "adapt to new technologies" more slowly than city folk, you really need to spend some time in the country. These days it ain't Kansas, as you yourself pointed out.

But all these distractions don't affect the appeal of WINNING.

If they did, the NY Yankees wouldn't have built an absurdly expensive new stadium.

To think that when I first arrived in NYC in 1993 and worked for the NY Post I did a little story on the first day tickets were on sale and NO ONE was at the stadium.

WHAT CHANGED SHWARMA???

You know the answer.

My son suffers from ADHD pretty bad. I tried for a couple years to not put him on meds, but I eventually had to because he just couldnt make it through the day withouth distrubing the whole class. As soon as he started his meds it was a complete turn around. From my experience all of his teachers have been great with understanding his problem, but at the same time not giving him special treatment.

I applaud these teachers. But it takes parents AND teachers to make it work. Teachers are surely unappreciated and it shouldnt be thay way.

Thomas Sowell says he had ADD until he was about 12.

He says that his dad cured it for him behind the woodshed about every six months up until then.

Does anyone even know offhand when we last returned a kickoff all the way to the house???

"When you were in school the schools had the authority to paddle you if you got out of line."

When I was at Rogers Junior High School if you got a detention you had the option of serving 30 minutes after school or having the gym teacher paddle it off, three licks with a racquetball paddle per detention while the principal witnessed it.

Being a shrewd individual and street wise way before street wise was even a term, I had a master plan.

I skipped detention hall over and over, this doubled each detention not served.

Realizing the school year was going to end without enough detention hall hours left for me to serve, the principal called my mom.

My mom, the principal, and my gym teacher agreed the best remedy was for me to have all 12 detentions paddled off in succession on the same day.

Imagine a kid today wearing only gym shorts having 36 licks in a row with a racquetball paddle as hard as a 35 yr old man could hit you.

My mom's reaction,
"While we are all here you wan Coach Brandon to whack a few more on like a savings account for you?

I just didn't appreciate the superiority he chose to display. We all have our own opinions and we all know how that saying goes...so both of us jsut have to accept to disagree.

There are definitely some "deadwood," "burned out," teachers out there for sure... but they are in the minority from what I've seen over the years.

roachcane77

The Truth speaks the truth... absolutely!

As a 29 year teaching veteran... I totally concur with your assessment of the "problems" with education.

It has, and always will, start with the HOME.

The Truth

There are bad teachers out there.

But from K through 12th grade the mojority of teachers involved with your kids care and do their best. They get treated like crap by the kids, the parents and the system that employs them by not paying them.

Hopefully, we will do better...on both sides of the ball.

Tell 'em Tex!

The Truth

Cav

Gotta call you out brother.

As the father of two dedicated educators and the Ex of another your assessment on the ADD is extremely misguided.

Teachers don't walk into the building each doing looking to find a way to f@ck up the kids. In fact, comments like that are more proof that being an educator is the most unappreciated profession on the planet.

Who else are parents going to blame on the lack of guidance provided to these kids?

When you were in school who made you do your homework? Who forced you to study? Who kicked you ass when you got out of line?

Your parents.

When you were in school the schools had the authority to paddle you if you got out of line. Parents these days not only don't provide proper guidance for a plethora of reasons, but they also fail to discipline their children for their inappropriate behaviors.

Plus they don't want the school to touch them either.

So these days your kid can litterally stand up in class and tell his teacher to f@ck himself and he knows not a damn thing will happen. Suspension is not corrective action, it's a vacation.

Most parents don't have time for the children they brought onto the earth. They expect that it's up to the school to mold their children yet don't offer any support to assist the people they believe are responsible for their kid.

When a kid can piss on the floor of the class and the worst that happens is he goes home you have a problem.

Pity the child that had a teacher call home in my day. Kids got beat before the moms even called the teacher back out of sheer embarrassment that the teacher had to call home.

Now?

Parents demand conferences because, of course, the teacher must be picking on THEIR kid.

Cuz adults have nothing better to do than torture your kid.

Parents have handcuff the school system by not making themselves and their children responsible for their educational experience.

ADD is far from an excuse and it sure isn't one the schools use...it's the parents.

You want kids to succeed, pay attention to them. Make them do their homework and kick their ass when don't behave in school.

You want your kids to succeed? Stop blaming the teachers and help them do their jobs by guiding your child instead of placing blame away from the only real influence that truly matters: you, the parent.

Someone mentioned yesterday about the ACC preview on College Football Live. On ESPN.com Heather Dininch broke down all the teams in the ACC blog and followed up with a one hour chat. I did like her response to this question:

Nick (Annapolis, MD): which ACC team has the most talent on their roster from top to bottom?

Heather Dinich: (3:39 PM ET ) Ooh. My gut reaction (which I always go with on the chats because there's no time to think) is Miami.

texascane

At OU, remember, it was 21-13 in the third quarter.

"But the Hurricanes could not stop the Sooners in the second half, as Oklahoma finished with a 411-139 edge in total offense.

Two games into his career, Oklahoma redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Bradford looks like a seasoned veteran.

Bradford tied a school record with five touchdown passes - three to Malcolm Kelly - to lead the fifth-ranked Sooners to a surprisingly easy 51-13 rout of Miami on Saturday.

Freeman completed just 3-of-9 passes for 17 yards while Wright was 7-of-14 for 65 yards.

Hopefully, we will do better...on both sides of the ball.

Here Here Calvin

Just think about how good nix made oklahoma's defense look when we played them 2 years ago, when they talked about how easy it was to coach against us. Than last year, every game of more significance, nix was pathetic.

You won't see mark whipple embarassing himself like that, from here on out, it'll mostly be all on execution now from the players, the aggressive play calls will be their for sure. The days of being too predictable are prety much over with. whipple is not the run on 1st, run on 2nd and than pass on 3rd down like the teams under butch davis, hell sometimes those teams would run on all 3 downs, and who was the oc again back than?

It's only a few more months before we start kickin azz and taking names again!

shwarma

And finally, bro chill out. I never once mentioned anything about you personally but don't you ever dare to question if I am paying attention to anything related to this team. I bleed orange and green.
Just becuase you post often doesn't make you right or knowledgable. When you talk down to people like this it just make you a blowhard.

I was providing a different perspective, a more objective one that considered things from outside of the passion demonstrated on this blog, but if you want to be a homer, and tout winning and "it's a cane thing" as the solution to attendance and recruiting go for it.

These things will improve somewhat with winning but as they say too 'times they a changin'

Lets just end this at we both want this team to win and hope to be celebrating number 6 next year.

shwarma

And to respond to your second point:

My comment was in direct reference to people living in major metropolitan areas (you know the type where Miami plays)

You go ask Jim Bob at Alabama if he "tweets" and I bet he knocks you out. Smaller towns commonly react slower to advances in technology and society. It's sociology not an opinion.

This point was purely about their being more distraction then twenty years ago.

You take this all as some sort of pussification but this is simply the reality of it.

shwarma

Cav - Your so off in your assessment of what I said. Let's clarify.

Recruiting
Fact - The internet has allowed kids to get more exposure then in the past (hence less hidden gems, ask anyone this isn't a novel idea.) Also, lets see Reid and James play a down in a couple games before you tout them. And just a thought, maybe the schools who should have these kids in their back pocket didn't want them becuase they thought there were other players who were better fits or they had better players interested. (I mean its not like LSU and UF dont have top classes ever year)

Offense - Running the pro-style back then was actually innovative. It is a fact that more teams run it now that's all. That was all that comment meant. And if you want to talk about the spread while not optimal for progression into the NFL it is still more compatible with those systems than the option which was the gimmick offense back then.

Mentality - Ahh the great myth. I am sick of reading people on here act like no other school can have players who have come from poor, under privaledged backgrounds who want to do their families right and act like a cocky mofo when doing it. I think we as fans consistently misjudge this me against the world mentality for something unique to Miami when all it is acting like a team (swagger was the unique thing we brought to it, but working hard is inherent in all those who want to succeed. A coach not a university breeds this. i.e. coker)

360Cane

I could not have said it better myself:

"The major problems with a young Miami team in 2008 were the offensive coordinator (the eternally overmatched Patrick Nix) and a senseless quarterback rotation (between Robert Marve and Jacory Harris)."

Cav...lol...i'm insinuating that kobe is a dirty punk who would get his ass handed to him on the playground courts lol

UF plays the bottom of the SEC this year. No Ole Miss, no Auburn, and no Bama. UTenn will suck, UGA lost too many of their stars even though Aaron Murray (another Plant HS QB) is a good QB just inexperienced, and LSU has too many questions. They may not explode on offense with the loss of Harvin and Murphy, BUT I think their defense is going to be nasty with all those guys returning especially with Spikes back. Their D will carry them. They could easily go undefeated up until the SEC title. My money is on Ole Miss that game. Snead is going to rock the QB position for Ole Miss this year under Nutt. Ole Miss for the SEC.

By the way cav, i notice how consistent you are in saying that mark richt is a soft headcoach, although he's from UM, his problem is he went and spent too much time up their in trailer-hassee and came out watered down. LOL, that's probably true.

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

UMIke, are you trying to insinuate that Kobe sometimes takes advantage of his superstar status??

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

PB, I think Oscar will find another QB who can run that thing similar to T-Bone. It ain't that hard. Plus, Oscar hates to lose. And anytime a man hates to lose he's more likely than to find a way to win.

The question is, who's going to step in for Percy? He was just as valuable as T-Bone. That offense needs two dominant players, not just one. See 2007.

Debose doesn't seem to be quite the same type of player Percy was, more of a WR and less a RB. We'll see.

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

Cav - You made my point for me. Because people have these things (technology) they are bigger, more entrenched fans that are able to not go to the game and still be informed and involved. They can multi-task (a manifestation of societal a.d.d.) and still keep the wife happy, work, etc.

Twitter and A.D.D. were the examples for more of a societal state of mind. If you think this is not a factor in devoting hours to a singule purpose, you and I have a totally different opinion and can go back and forth all night.

I think for many die hards, the enjoyment in going to the game is the full immersion into what is going on and only concentrating on that. For the casual fan, these distractions or mindset take away from that enjoyment and therefore make attending less of a necessity.

>>>>>

Shwarm, Twitter is a symptom of bored domesticated Americans.

ADD is a result of lazy teachers who want to blame the students for the fact that school is BOOOORRRRINNNGGGGG!!!!

But why were there 90,000 ADHD, Twittered people AT ALABAMA'S SPRING GAME???

I guess those country boys and girls know something those city slickers don't know, right??

Give it up Shwarm. Sold out stadiums follow winners, and even losers, like in Chicago.

Face to face contact is still the Alpha and Omega. NOTHING IS LIKE BEING THERE.

All these puzzified gadgets we have today just make people weaker and softer when it comes to face to face meeting. But there's still nothing even remotely close to seeing, hearing, touching and tasting. NOTHING.

Why do Europeans and South Americans pack stadiums and drink til they drop for a soccer match or a rugby match when according to you they can't concentrate on anything long enough or they can just watch it on their Ipod????

Don't get it twisted, bro'. So-called "progress" is a nice way to say DOMESTICATED.

Under a different national mentality, electricity could have been shaped in a totally different direction, other than comfort and convenience, or as I call it "domestication."

But at the end of the day, LIVE music is so much better than recorded music, PLAYING football is better than playing it on a video game, and kissing the woman you love is better than watching someone kiss on TV.

Get it???

Central Vacuum Planet - UMike

I want to see Kobe and Artest in the UFC cage..and get the pleasure of watching Artest kick Kobe's dirty lil azz!

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

Cav - I disagree on three points:

Recruiting - Getting unknown guys is harder with the internet and more teams are coming to S FLA (though we do have the upperhand being the home team)

Playing Style - We were one of the first teams to be fully committed to a pro-style. The advantage of it is that it is designed to counteract/react to anything due to its versatility. Many teams then ran a gimmick (wishbone, option, run and shoot) so are style neutralized that.

Mentality - As Canes fans we are prideful about this, but I think many more teams have this now too. They have seen the success this can bring on many levels. Though we are the real mccoys when it comes to this aspect, teams are realizing this is the ticket to championships and NFL riches.

Posted by: shwarma | May 07, 2009 at 10:37 PM

>>>>>>

Shwarma, brother, you're not even paying attention this year and last year's classes in recruiting. You've missed the NFL-demonstrated dislike of the Spread craze sweeping college football. And lastly, please show me one team other than UF that has a mentality anywhere near classic Hurricane football. Those dumb-azz fans don't know the first thing about mentality. Who are you trying to fool?? Where's the proof?? But my point wasn't about the fans at all. IT'S ABOUT THE PLAYERS.

RECRUITING

Who were the surprises of the class, the hidden gems???

MIKE JAMES....WHO??...MIKE JAMES...WHO??
And how did we find him in this internet, information swamped age?? PERSONAL CONTACTS AND HARD WORK.

Who was the other?? JAMAL REID.
How did all those big time schools miss out on JAMAL REID??Because they didn't hit the road and do their due diligence LIKE CLINTON HURTT.

And how about Laron Byrd??? So much for LSU's home field advantage. Why did Laron Byrd want to come to the U?? Because of how we played with a proper Hurricane team.

OFFENSE

Shwarma, you must not have followed the draft closely these last few years. What are NFL scouts saying in unison about the hottest craze in college football, the Spread option, from UF to TTech??

THEY DO NOT LIKE IT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO TEACH KIDS THE PRO-STYLE OFFENSE FROM DAY ONE.

Why do you think Shannon was so determined to find an NFL guy. Because he knows that not only will an NFL offense be very difficult for college teams to defend, it will also make Miami players much more desireable in the draft.

So once again, WE DO HAVE THE ADVANTAGE.

MENTALITY

I don't even need to address that because I'm not talking about fans. I'm talking about players. And until you can show me a school with a record similar to what we had from 1985 to 1992, and again from 1999-2003, you have no point.

Don't talk about USC or even UF. How many #1 teams did they play on the road over the last 10 years?? How many 20+ game winning streaks did they have?? How many did they end?? How many unranked teams did they lose to??

No case here brother. And what's the difference between those Miami teams and today's successful programs.

MENTALITY. Not talent. Definitely not facilities.

And MENTALITY will be the difference once again, along with strategic superiority.

Canez1

PB I agree

I also think the loss of Percy is going to equal atleast 2 losses this year.

Forget about crowds, the best thing about all of this is, the majority of the players on this team are from the same places alot of us are from, so they alreayd know about crowds/lack their of. So just like the teams in the 80's and 90's not really talking about fan turn-out, these guys won't either. Hell, alot of the players on the team now would have never been able to say they went to a UM game had it not been for their recruiting visit.

They're here because of their luv for UM, the tradition and the players that came before(thee incompetent one's era/errors) them, who put in the hardwork and dedication to make UM GREAT, not good, but GREAT! Those type players are once again at green tree practice field, with more due -in and on the way next month.

Guys down here already know you'll get a bigger crowd at some highschool games, why, because people in Miami support players they know. Which is one of the main reasons why UM's attendance should increase some though because shannon is bringing in players that people know again, that play that Miami style of football that is the envy of football itself.

While their are players who do great at the nfl, what other college turned out a SEAN TAYLOR or ed reed, who made ronnie lott say, he's the best safety to play the game ever! What other school produced an irvin, who couldn't just be judged by numbers alone, ray lewis, who some say is the greatest linebacker to ever play the game thus far, no other school produces that type of greatness, but in the end, when you break just those few players i selected what was the main difference, their MENTALITY, CONFIDENCE and promise made, one man to another, that they would "GET THEIR JOB DONE"

Cav I have to agree with shwarma, it is something I see in the younger generation. They truly cannot sit through a game, it kinda scares me because they truly have issues with focusing on one thing at a time. I see it in class every day.

Miami will never sell as many tickets as other areas. Do you guys think other small schools in areas of state schools, sell as many tickets as the big schools in the area? Not every resident of Miami went to UM, lots of kids in the Miami area go to UF, FSU, USF, UCF, FIU and FAU. Imagine if they all went to UM? Imagine Miami not being an hour away from the keys? Imagine Miami not being 10minutes from the beach? Imagine no boating, sking and watersking? Maybe we could sell-out.

Miami's demographic is also different. Lots of people with money, who would much rather shop on Lincoln then attend a football game. A huge hispanic population who would rather watch soccer or baseball. We have to really look at the whole picture and stop believing that all the peeps in Miami are crazy cane fans like us.

Shwarma, now that's a funny one, blaming Twitter and ADD. lol

But the fact remains that all of those things have made college football EVEN BIGGER.

Now crazy fans like us can talk about our favorite team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Winning solves EVERYTHING.

And even when we win there will still be days when the stadium is half-full, just like it was in 1989 and 1990. But you can bet the TV crews will be there. haha

JCane

The Canes never drew as well as they should, even when they were winning. The stadium was full vs. the big names, and of course it would be full regardless of the quality of the season vs. FSU or FU, given their fan bases locally. UM never marketed well. The last few years have seen many season ticket holders give up their seats as they became tired of being held hostage by the U for having to pay extra to be Hurricane Club members, etc. to then have the rights to purchase season ticket holders. When asked about these things, the arrogance of responses (ie this is a team that won 5 national championships, etc.). If you take this type of attitude, you'd better win or be prepared to give huge discounts when you're not even close to championship level. Marketing typically means you're trying to make nice with your potential client base.

That being said, most of the country loves to watch the Canes on the tube, and most college towns wish UM's team were their own when it comes to the history and the style. South Florida doesn't fully appreciate this.

Shwarma, I don't think winning is any more difficult as long as the Miami Formula remains the same.

Just look at where the program was in 1983. All the traditional well-know schools had everything. More players, better facilities, much, much more money, and we still whipped their azzes.

What's the difference today??

True, there are few scholarships but that only means something for the little schools like Boisie and Fresno, Rutgers and Maryland.

More intense recruiting only goes so far. Most kids still go to school near home.

The difference between Miami and the other big schools is the same today as it was in 1986 and 2001.

MENTALITY and COMPETITION. The will to DOMINATE. It's a style native to SoFl but it can be found in individual players everywhere.

Other schools talk about it but I have yet to see any other school practice it as ruthlessly as Miami used to and now is again.

Not LSU (strong team and HC but not enough), not UGA (soft HC, not as much talent), not USC (soft conference, not as much talent).

UF has come the closest and take a look at their formula.....FL talent deep, with a few out of staters, and a HC who hates to lose.

Sound familiar????

The difference is Shannon's putting together a deeper SoFl talent pool and a better strategy on offense. Plus, Oscar doesn't know what a BOSS is. lol

Once we're 85 deep with kids of one mind and a uniformly high talent level, the other factors are negated, neutralized.

We'll be back to the point where the NC starts and stops in SoFl and we'll be beating up on ACC teams the way we used to beat up on Big East squads. AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS SOME. haha

If the Miami Hurricanes had their past glory and played in the SEC in Foret Smith Arkansas there would be 75 to 80 thousand people at every home game.

If the Miami Hurricanes played in the SEC they would have had at least two or three more Heisman winners also.

shwarma

Cav I feel what your saying and I know that your opinion is that of many others, but I just don't think wins are the total solution (it certainly helps though)

I think things are lot different than the late 80s/early 90s. The Canes were "it" then. They marked the first time there was a brash, dominating presence in the college football game.

Now there are a lot more distractions for people and winning will not be a new thing to the fan base. Twitter, a.d.d., the internet and the further glamorization of South Beach are just a few of the reasons keeping a fan base in a metropolitan city like Miami engaged is even harder.

Soup check email.

Shwarma lots of good posts tonight good stuff.

I remember way way back getting free Canes tickets from WQAM by the handful.

I think having 5000 free girl scouts or boy scouts or special olympics kids with there parents for each home game fills seats and spends dollars at the concession stands.

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

Shwarma, those are good ideas.

I think the affects of Paul Dee and Larry Coker are the biggest reasons why attendance has been so anemic.

Let the wins pile up and suddenly the stadium will be rocking.

Did they ever do any of those things at the OB?? I doubt it.

Winning is the only real panacea known to man. haha

Chinese Punisher aka Cavaleer

Solar, where'd you find that piece on Korch???

DZ8

Agreed.

Out for the night.

shwarma

I mean us here on the blob are the die hards, what we are talking about though is the more casual fan. If your not going to compete for the national championship (which 2 losses normally eliminates you from) I think this becomes a much more complex struggle and hence why community relations is increasingly important.

shwarma

This is the thing: Winning championships is much harder than it used to be, so since this is a spoiled fan base, I don't know if the winning they expect to see will ever be back.

It used to be something if you could have 5 straight 11 win or better seasons. I think its now something if you can get to 10 every year. Two losses is not something this fan base will see as a total success in terms of driving people into the seats.

DZ8

I would love for it to change. Reality vs. how i wish things would be are two VERY different things.

I'll bet you Randy is telling them something like, "just take care of what you can take care of. handle your responsibility. If you win, they will come."

shwarma

86 - Since I am not a 12%er' I have to say that Jan 1 bowl game would be a great finish this year. That would mean we most likely one our division and only lost 3 or 4 games max.

shwarma

DZ8 - I understand what your saying but I think that it needs to change.

Randy is ushering in the new era, and with that, the team should turn over a new leaf. Kids now want more and more attention and while this will never be an OSU or PSU, they want to play in front of a fuller house. That's just fact. Thank god we play in the ACC and its weak in that respect.

The winner of the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game will serve as the host team of the FedEx Orange Bowl, unless it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS Standings and is playing in the Citi BCS National Championship Game. This year’s FedEx Orange Bowl will be played on January 5 at 8:00 pm. and will be nationally televised by FOX.

Agreements also continue with long-standing partners which include: (All times listed are Eastern)

Chick-fil-A Bowl, December 31, 7:30 pm on ESPN
Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, January 1, 1:00 pm on CBS
Champs Sports Bowl, December 29, 8:00 pm on ESPN
Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, December 27, 8:15 pm on ESPN
Meineke Car Care Bowl, December 26, 4:30 pm on ESPN
Emerald Bowl, December 26, 8:00 pm on ESPN

DZ8

If you win they will come.

Miami has always been an "event" town. Even when we're on top of the world there were many empty seats for Temple and Rutgers, etc...

shwarma

That is very obvious 86. A team with this much recent history should draw better. I understand a sellout might not be in the cards, but 60,000 should be happening every game.

canechic

You guys the ticket purchases are going to be even worse this year. The school is no longer giving employee discounts and I know many faithful canes who will not be purchasing season tickets this year. Pretty sad but the economy stinks and the stadium is huge. I am afraid it will be pretty empty again this year but if they win just maybe.....

canechic

Those these all involve $$$ sacrifices from the university, but anything beats 35,000 empty seats.

Nothing gets by me, not even the UM cheerleaders when they run really fast.

U should know that by now. The iron grip of 86 is always tight around the throat of the blog.

I remember in 'Cane Mutiny how in the begining they gave away coupons for free tickets at Burger King. We don't have to go that extreme but shwarma has some good ides.

Solar, thanks for looking into that.

That SID is way to overqualified for this job! (seriously, he must be a canes fan or wanted to stay in FL).

Anyway, reason I asked is community relations is where this team/school lacks. Though I don't live in S FLA now, I used to and never remember hearing anything about the team.

It's Miami and there are many distractions, but that is not an excuse.

Have local high school bands play at half time and offer $10 tix to family that day. (builds fan base/recruiting, is affordable, and builds community pride in team)

Negotiate with the fins to have a presence at their games and visa versa. (maybe even offer combo ticket packages/discounts)

Offer the students free transportation to the games.

Work out a program with the Homestead Air Reserve base and give them some sort of role at the games.

Thursday night games can be paired with pre-cruise pacakges.

Those these all involve $$$ sacrifices from the university, but anything beats 35,000 empty seats.

From www.hurricanesports.com:

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-- The 15th-ranked University of Miami baseball team will wrap up its 2009 regular season home schedule this weekend when the Hurricanes step out of Atlantic Coast Conference play to host Bethune-Cookman in a three-game set, May 8-10, at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

The Hurricanes (31-16) and the Wildcats (27-25) will open the three-game series Friday night at 7 p.m., with game two set for 7 p.m. Saturday and the finale slated for 1 p.m. Sunday. Miami is coming off its second straight series win after taking two of three at Boston College last weekend.

Chris Herrmann continues to swing the team's hottest bat. Over UM's last 10 games, Herrmann is hitting .457 (16-for-35) with team-highs in hits (16), runs (12), RBI (12), total bases (27), walks (9), slugging percentage (.771) and on-base percentage (.568). Herrmann also has three homers in UM's last 10 games after having just three in the team's first 37 games this season. After hitting just seven home runs as a freshman last year, Yasmani Grandal has emerged as one of the league's top power threats, coming into the weekend with a team-high 14 long balls. Each of the last two weekends, Grandal homered in the first two games of UM's series against Virginia Tech and Boston College.

Sophomore starter Chris Hernandez (6-3, 4.68 ERA) has returned to form as of late, allowing just four earned runs in his last 20 innings of work. Last weekend at Boston College, Hernandez scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out eight in a season-high tying seven innings of work. Fellow sophomore Iden Nazario (5-3, 6.22 ERA) is expected to make his first Saturday start of the season.

Thanks DZ.

IMHO - Tressel should have made a game plan with TP under center against USC. Everytime he was in, it seemed USC did not know how to defend them. It will be interesting to watch this kid. He should shine cause he is in the Big 11.
