The ACC had 56 players selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft. And, you may be surprised to find out that even after a sub-par season your Miami Hurricanes had a total of 9 players selected that now hope to make "The Show" at some point in their professional MLB careers.
Perhaps the most stunning selection in the entire MLB draft was the pick of Canes starting MLB Glenn "I can't tackle but I can really" Cook by the Chicago Cubs in the 46th round.
HUH? Yeah that's what we said!
Who knew that a guy who couldn't even hit a big running back wearing pads could hit a tiny little baseball with a skinny piece of wood?
For Cook's sake let's hope he can bunt better than he can tackle because if not his MLB career will be very short lived in the bigs.
This shocking turn of events came in spite of what we thought was reliable insider information that "Cookie" was heading straight for a spot on a syndicated TV show for the Food Network after a less than stellar Senior season playing college football not baseball.
The site of his flabby mid-section that was captured on film during a tryout for NFL scouts at UM's Pro Day had Canes fans thinking that Cookie had been eating more than his fare share of well, you know, cookies. Shows you just can't trust those insiders can you?
The UM players selected were:
- Ryan "Action" Jackson, SS
- Kyle "Ring My" Bellamy, P
- Jason "I Ain't No Old" Haggerty, C/1B
- Chris "Hit Man" Herrman, IF/OF
- Dave "Heavy D" DiNatale. OF
- Erik "Erik" Erickson, P
- John "Take It To The" Housey, P
- David "Mi Hermano Es Carlos" Guiterrez, P
- Glenn "I Can't Tackle But I Can Really" Cook, MLB
ACC Notes from the 2009 MLB Draft:
- The 56 picks are the second-best all-time for the Atlantic Coast Conference (behind 63 selections in 2007)
- Three ACC players go in first round (North Carolina’s Dustin Ackley to Mariners second overall, Boston College’s Tony Sanchez to Pirates fourth overall, North Carolina’s Alex White to Indians 15th overall); Boston College’s Mike Belfiore goes to Diamondbacks as first-round supplemental pick (45th overall).
- Clemson and Miami lead all ACC schools with nine picks, while Duke sets a school record and North Carolina ties a school record with seven each.
- At least 50 ACC players taken in each of the last four drafts (54 were chosen in 2008).
- The ACC has had at least one first-round selection each of the last 18 years (1992-2009) and has had multiple first-round selections in eight of the last nine drafts.
BG,
U out there? When you posting your NCAA 10 review? I saw the roster change blog, but was wondering if you were going to review it. Did you download the new maps for CoD 5? They are pretty cool. Sorry you missed playing with us the other night. Maybe next time. Hope you had fun with your nephew. Remember to let him win sometimes!

Any knowledge on the numbers the freshmen coming in this summer or fall? Is Ray Ray going to be 26? Speaking of 26, we just got an 8 week old english lab, and named him Taylor!
We have a small bet for those of you interested. The bet is, when we beat OU, we all go out to the tattoo parlor for a U logo tattoo!
I'm going to sport mine on the outside of my right calf. Mrs. 360 is going to get hers on the back of her neck (ouch!).

This blog will be managed and moderated by real Canes fans, not the media, or the University or anyone else for that matter. This blog is about a place for all Canes sports talk, all the time. Here it's all about the U, the teams, the players, the coaches and the fans. If you are a true Canes fan and bleed orange and green, then this blog if for U!
We encourage you to visit our website weekly to read new content from Page Owners like Solar, Lyquid, Esteban, Calvin, OGV, Aqua and a Guest page writer each week. We will be covering the Canes from a true fans perspective with no limitations to our opinions (just ask Calvin!) or yours.
The site also has a bit of Canes history (Games and Photos pages) and a look at Canes who you can now watch playing on Sunday (NFLU page).
We will have weekly features here on the blog and daily moderators who will help manage content and conversations to keep the topics current, lively and moving along.
We will highlight players and coaches and upcoming games and anything else that we can think of that may be relevant to bringing U "the news U can use."

Geathers frustrated me. A ton of potential but just couldn't seize a position and when we needed him most (Fiesta Bowl) they didn't call on him. Whether that was on the coaching staff or on him is something I still think about.

I think we go with 3 TEs for 2010.

Next time you have a hang over go get a milk shake or slurpy. Then pound that drink as quick as you can. You'll get the "brain freeze" but after that, no more hang over. (doesn't always work perfectly but after you get thru the brain freeze everything else you feel is like icing on the cake)

j.w yea
I liked Geathers, I liked Jammi German too, I thought he should have done better over all also.
I think Whipple might be the guy that uses the players natural strengths as weapons as apposed to trying to adapt plays to guys on the field.

ONE YEAR AGO...
June 17, 2008
So here we all are, one year after Canespace was launched on June 17, 2007. My, how time flies when you are blogging Hurricane sports 24/7!
After over 85,000 comments and over 1.2 million page views, Canespace continues to impact the blogging world with its committment, content and connections. With over ten regular contributors located across the Country writing feature articles for "The Space", the diversity and dynamics that make Canespace unique in the blogging world continue to drive the blog forward into the big time blogoshpere.
Initially, they said it couldn't be done. No way could an under-funded, fan-based, non-media affiliated site spring to the forefront of Hurricane athletic blogs. They were wrong! Not only has Canespace blogged into the big leagues with big media and big money players like the Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel, but we have more than held our own with them all the way through. Canespace has made the big time.
And we could NOT have achieved our goals without the friends we made along the way. Special thanks go out to Manny Navarro from the Miami Herald who was the first to take a risk and support our grass roots, fan based efforts. Canespace introduced the concept of LIVE chats and Manny rocked the blog with his witty and sincere responses to bloggers' questions in real time for the first time here on The Space.
Then came Rudy Rodriguez-Chomat and Christopher Stock from InsidetheU.com who also brought you the news you could use despite some controversy along the way. Chris introduced the "Monday Lunch With Chris" feature and turned blue Monday's into orange and green with his smart and insightful comments.
We shared ideas and dinner with Shandel Richardson from the Sun-Sentinel at The Titanic and then took over The Light where we established "Canespace Corner". We got our first sponsorship (advertisement) from CBS4 Sports. Lastly, Brian Foley from The College Baseball Blog has joined the list of respected media types who have graced The Space.
Beyond that what really drove the blog was the original Spacers and those who came along later in our development that were true Canes fans. Smart, knowledgeable and funny. There are too many names to name. But they were young and old, men and women, students and sports fans, international fans and military personnel. The world is simply covered by Canes fans far and wide. When you look at the FeedJit map early in the morning and see over 15 to 20 COUNTRIES logged in you know The Space is a world wide rage.
Our first interview was with "Legend of the Fall" and son of a legend Rohan Marley. Rohan, son of Music legend Bob Marley and a legend in his own right as a Hurricane warrior and hero, was straight out jamming when he talked to us. He said that on Greentree practice field, the defense felt like "Lions on the Serengeti", masters of their domain. The #2 never looked so large as when Rohan would run completely across the field at full speed and slam the ball carrier into the turf. Small in stature, but large in heart and character, he was a true Hurricane legend.
The next interview that we will post will be with another Hurricane legend, Lamar Thomas #36. Lamar shared some intimate details and real stories of what it was like to be a Hurricane back in the day. He countered Rohan's "Lions on the Serengeti" comment with one of his own. Another Canespace classic coming to blog near you soon!
Canespace is just scratching the surface of what we have planned. Media credentials are still a few steps away but UM Associate AD Jim Frevola, Patricia Brodeur from the UM Alumni Association and Lindsay Radeer from the Hurricane Club have all agreed to work with Canespace this coming football season.
It has been a great year. And the next one can only get better at Canespace. Our goal is for Canespace will be the #1 blog in the entire Hurricane sports world.
By The Fans, For The Fans. Go Canes, Go Canespace!!!

I hope none of the recruits I talked to today read this blog but I am to excited not to share with you. Corey Lemonier thanked me for telling him straight up how amazing Miami is. I described what I thought of Miami to Darius Robinson and he agreed one hundred percent. Marcus Lattimore told me that he seriously appricated the advice I gave him. I wish I could be professional and not say anything but I feel like a little school boy inside. Anyway If we get them to go to Miami I get a Canespace shirt. lol GO CANES!!

Speaking of baseball players going into the draft, check this kid out, supposedly tabbed the next great thing ...
The kid's dad has a plan to have him forgo the final two years of his high school, get his GED instead and go to a JUCO so he can get drafted by next year ...

I saw the article Shandel put up today about Joe Wylie possibly leaving...Good work lately by the way...He`s listed at 6'1 195 decent size if true...Is P.T. the reason or is there more to it??We need depth back there so i`m not quite getting whats up with this possible move..
Posted by: SebastianDaIbis | June 15, 2009 at 04:55 PM
I'm no insider, but It sounds like P.T. issue, Sebastian. He's talking about transferring to a 1AA school where he can probably play soon. If true, hope it works out for him.

Jonathan Harris was another really good #3.
Remember those third downs when he would cut over the middle with that long white towel flowing along beside him??
he was a player too, took some hard licks to get yardage

Sup Spacers....just got back from a week in Tenn, and I will let you know I found ONE cane fane..die hard to. We will be moving in the next 2 months...yes right before football season. Does anyone know how much the college football ticket or whatever channel it is to watch all the college games costs, or any place close to Chattanoga that shows the Canes games?
Also..86...remember that article I wrote about a year ago (July 08) about the Miami Bias? That same dam security guard at the airport made a comment about my canes jersey lol. My son was taking off his belt before going through the metal detector so the lady goes.."son, you dont have to take off your belt, you look innocent enough"...so the old guard goes "well...he is in the company of a miami fan" lol...it was funny..good hearted humor.
