This article was written exclusively for Canespace by blogger and apparent babe magnet TimCanes...
The University of Miami has a rich and successful football history and tradition that almost no other school in the Nation can touch.
This year the Canes will face a new and wanna-be in-State rival, the University of South Florida Bulls. The Canes and Bulls met once before in 2005 with the Canes comin out on top 27-7.
USF did not begin their football program until 1997, which means they still have a long way to go before they can even hope to develop the traditions like UM or pretend to be a consistent National contender. The Bulls didn’t make it to the Division 1A level until 2001 and then into Conference USA in 2003. In 2005 they moved to compete in the Big East and have had some recent success.
In fact USF recently opened up an $18 million building specifically for athletics. This is the building I currently work in completing my internship, and yes it is very much so 18 million dollars. You could say this building alone could potentially sway some high school athletes to USF. Being that they are a public school and that their enrollment is over 40,000 students, they obviously have a lot more money to work with than our beloved PRIVATE school in Coral Gables.
Well big whoop! So they have nice facilities including Raymond James Stadium (not too far from campus), the Sun Dome (on campus), and this new athletics facility. But, at these facilities do they have the likes of Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson and Ray Lewis working out with their college athletes? I don’t think so!
This is of course because their most well known player to play in the NFL may be a kicker, one of the Gramatica boys. I am pretty sure that Kawika Mitchell and Michael Jenkins (a bust so far for the Cowboys) couldn’t hold like the jock strap of players such as Morgan, Vilma, Beason or Reed (feel free to insert other UM players here).
Sure, USF has recently had a few good seasons and was even been ranked as high as #2 in the nation in 2007. But when it comes to both program’s long term success are you going to try to compare Randy Shannon and Jim Levitt?
Shannon brought in three top ten recruiting classes in his first three years as the Canes top dog, including the #1 recruiting class in 2008. Coming off a horrible season that year, it just shows how well Randy Shannon and company can recruit talent, especially South Florida talent.
I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting where coach Levitt claimed that the two biggest games in USF history will be their meetings this year with FSU Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes.
The game will feature a matchup of QBs Matt Grothe for the Bulls and the Hurricanes’ Jacory Harris who should be well prepared for this game. November 28 is a 11 games and a long way away and Jacory will have plenty of game experience by then. Jacory will be searching to lead Miami on the road back to prominence and the national spotlight as the Canes will hope to use this season and this game as a stepping stone back to greatness.
And if any future football players are deciding between going to USF or Miami, they should simply look at the Hurricane’s history, tradition, and championships as well as all of the UM players in the NFL. And, let me send a personal note to Kayvon Webster, the former Hurricane verbal commit who switched to USF on National Signing Day: payback is coming and it is coming soon!
Let’s just hope that a few of our talented and developing wide receivers torch Webster so that we can show him that maybe he does belong at USF and not at UM.
Our recruiting wall around South Florida remains strong. For the most part, Miami still gets the recruits they want. Canes Recruiting Coordinator Clint Hurtt would tell you that USF is the least of our worries at this point in time in the history and proud tradition that is Miami Hurricane football.
I believe the Canes will prove him right and prove to everyone else which team is really relevant on November 28, 2009…
wha?

Alot of rumblings were out there that said they were tiring of Levitts act(I don`t follow them so not sure what kind of coach he is)
3 radio guys I can think of off-hand talk about Cane football pretty much all year long here
USF will never sniff what we have or get the players we want

Skool...how do U think I feel? I mean thank GOD I am (HAPPILY) married cuz my prowling days are obviously LONG over. I'm standing there feeling like pb: INVISIBLE!
The (then single) OcalaCane and young Timmy are prowling the crowd of felines outside of the stadium and I'm taking the pix. Timmy is a litle shy at first but calm and smooth and using his:
"Hey, I'm came all the way down from New Jersey for the game" line (which he did). It is working like a charm. The girls are all giggles and smiles and taking the pix like nobody's bidness.
Then as we loop around the stadium we, by PURE chance, run into the UM cheerleaders in the parking lot on their way into the stadium. Timing is EVERYTHING.
By this time the cheerleaders know Ocala and me cuz we have been building relationships with them and respectfully admiring them (stalking) at each game and actually have made friends with them through the Captain and Coach.
So we use the young Timmy line that: "He came all the way from New Jersey (which he did) so can we get a photo" line.
They are all cool with that so we get the photo of a lifetime for a young buck.
After that it is ALL gravy...just another day in the life of Canespace!

Here's the thing I'm wondering. The Cubs actually spent a draft pick on Cook. Were they worried other people were going to beat out the Cubbies for Glenn's services if they didn't draft him?
It's like the old days of the NASL when in the lower rounds teams would run out of players they wanted to draft and select Playmates.
Here's a baseball nightmare to keep you up at night. You're on third. The hitter smacks a long drive. You run for home. The throw beats you to plate. You look up and realize the catcher is Allen Bailey. Do you still try to run him over?

They seem to be saying we were going hard after him and BB and when they spurned us thats when we took MJ and LM..
Thats why now they said the vest should of let him stay and play here
The only post I left was..That I never knew we were going that hard after him and RS gave BB a timetable and it passed by
And of course I had to hear how all So.Fla. kids are raised that way and you cant change them
So the press is tossing his lettuce problem somewhat at us

Junior right-handed pitcher David Gutierrez and football player Glenn Cook were the final two University of Miami Hurricanes selected on the last day of the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Thursday. The Minnesota Twins took Gutierrez in the 37th round while the Chicago Cubs drafted Cook in the 46th round.
David Gutierrez
6-0, 165
Junior right-handed pitcher
Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus
Younger brother of 2008 first-round pick Carlos Gutierrez (Minnesota Twins/27th overall), Gutierrez is 11-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 168 1/3 innings in his three-year career at Miami. After going 5-0 with a 4.75 ERA as a sophomore in 2008, Gutierrez became a full-time starter in 2009 and compiled a record of 4-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 72 innings of work this past season.
He was named to the 2009 NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team after tossing a complete game shutout of Jacksonville on May 31. The nine-inning outing was the longest of his career, with the Miami native scattering seven hits while striking out a career-high eight. It was the first complete game shutout by a UM pitcher since Cesar Carillo accomplished the feat back on March 31, 2005 against Oral Roberts. Gutierrez was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week early in the season after holding then-No. 12 Florida scoreless in seven innings of work in a 2-1 UM win in Gainesville.
Glenn Cook
6-1, 220
Senior outfielder
Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace
Cook was a sixth-year senior for the Hurricanes football team this past season. One of three team captains, he received the Plumer Memorial Award (leadership, motivation, spirit) and Dale Melching Award (leadership) at the 2008 UM football awards' banquet. Cook started all 13 games for the Hurricanes at middle linebacker and served as the quarterback of the defense. He led team with 91 tackles (56 solo, 35 assisted) and had eight tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. He matched career-highs with 10 tackles at Texas A&M and against. Cook last played baseball as a junior at Monsignor Pace where he was a left-handed pitcher and an outfielder. He hit .300 with two home runs and 16 RBI.

That lettuce is going to be a big problem. Apparently he was caught with 28 grams. That's beyond simple possession but a felony.
Maybe he'll get lucky and get a prosecutor who used to work for the NCAA. Then he might be able to get off by forfeiting yards he gained in games he played two years ago.
Posted by: Old Skool | June 11, 2009 at 09:03 PM
From Shandel at the Sun-Sentinel:
"Berry, who was supposed to compete for immediate playing time at Ohio State, was arrested today in Miami on drug possession charges. Not exactly the best way to kick off his college career.
As for Brown, we all know the story. He committed to UM only to delay his decision. Coach Randy Shannon refused to wait and ultimately rescinded the scholarship offer. Since, Brown has signed with Tennessee and watched his mentor, Brian Butler, endure an NCAA investigation.
"I think (Shannon) was probably right in that scenario," ESPN recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill said. "You can't let any player hold your recruiting class hostage."

There was some breaking news about a student on the USF campus being seen with a gun, several students called the police about it
We went on the air, as well as other stations in the area, with breaking news about the event
The only description the students gave was, he had jorts with a white shirt that said "Go Greek" and he was walking with a rifle
USF sent out massive text alerts to students, telling them to stay away from campus while police units searched all around the Greek Village/the campus and even had their helicopters overhead
It was a ROTC student, walking with a practice rifle
We interviewed a japanese kid who was taken down by police as he was walking with a red shirt, blue shorts and textbook.
I know the cops were thinking Virginia Tech in their heads ... the report that went out to everyone (including police) said, kid with white shirt reading "Go Greek" and jorts (blue jean shorts) with a rifle.
I'm sure timcanes could tell you about it if he was on campus today

I give Glenn Cook a lot of credit for perseverance and being a smart football player.
If the trance I'm in is indicative of anything, I believe that the blonde in the Glenn Cook jersey might have been more effective than Glen at stopping a ball carrier in his tracks.
I certainly have no desire to run past that!

Finally, as I escape the trance, I have to quote En Vogue.

Busy, was that soul II soul?
Anyway, gotta question for the board. Who was the better linebacker, Nate Webster or Dan Morgan? The reason why I ask because I been reading the board talk about how great Morgan was, and I admit he was one of the greatest LB's in UM history. But, I vaguely remember that through the '99 season, I thought the defense was built around Webster, and it was Webster being compared to Ray Lewis, and not Morgan. Did Morgan's 2000 season really catapult him passed Webster? Would he have had the same season if NCAA would've allowed Webster to go back to UM instead of forcing him into the draft? Or am I not remembering things correctly?
