This article was written exclusively for Canespace by blogger and apparent babe magnet TimCanes...
The University of Miami has a rich and successful football history and tradition that almost no other school in the Nation can touch.
This year the Canes will face a new and wanna-be in-State rival, the University of South Florida Bulls. The Canes and Bulls met once before in 2005 with the Canes comin out on top 27-7.
USF did not begin their football program until 1997, which means they still have a long way to go before they can even hope to develop the traditions like UM or pretend to be a consistent National contender. The Bulls didn’t make it to the Division 1A level until 2001 and then into Conference USA in 2003. In 2005 they moved to compete in the Big East and have had some recent success.
In fact USF recently opened up an $18 million building specifically for athletics. This is the building I currently work in completing my internship, and yes it is very much so 18 million dollars. You could say this building alone could potentially sway some high school athletes to USF. Being that they are a public school and that their enrollment is over 40,000 students, they obviously have a lot more money to work with than our beloved PRIVATE school in Coral Gables.
Well big whoop! So they have nice facilities including Raymond James Stadium (not too far from campus), the Sun Dome (on campus), and this new athletics facility. But, at these facilities do they have the likes of Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson and Ray Lewis working out with their college athletes? I don’t think so!
This is of course because their most well known player to play in the NFL may be a kicker, one of the Gramatica boys. I am pretty sure that Kawika Mitchell and Michael Jenkins (a bust so far for the Cowboys) couldn’t hold like the jock strap of players such as Morgan, Vilma, Beason or Reed (feel free to insert other UM players here).
Sure, USF has recently had a few good seasons and was even been ranked as high as #2 in the nation in 2007. But when it comes to both program’s long term success are you going to try to compare Randy Shannon and Jim Levitt?
Shannon brought in three top ten recruiting classes in his first three years as the Canes top dog, including the #1 recruiting class in 2008. Coming off a horrible season that year, it just shows how well Randy Shannon and company can recruit talent, especially South Florida talent.
I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting where coach Levitt claimed that the two biggest games in USF history will be their meetings this year with FSU Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes.
The game will feature a matchup of QBs Matt Grothe for the Bulls and the Hurricanes’ Jacory Harris who should be well prepared for this game. November 28 is a 11 games and a long way away and Jacory will have plenty of game experience by then. Jacory will be searching to lead Miami on the road back to prominence and the national spotlight as the Canes will hope to use this season and this game as a stepping stone back to greatness.
And if any future football players are deciding between going to USF or Miami, they should simply look at the Hurricane’s history, tradition, and championships as well as all of the UM players in the NFL. And, let me send a personal note to Kayvon Webster, the former Hurricane verbal commit who switched to USF on National Signing Day: payback is coming and it is coming soon!
Let’s just hope that a few of our talented and developing wide receivers torch Webster so that we can show him that maybe he does belong at USF and not at UM.
Our recruiting wall around South Florida remains strong. For the most part, Miami still gets the recruits they want. Canes Recruiting Coordinator Clint Hurtt would tell you that USF is the least of our worries at this point in time in the history and proud tradition that is Miami Hurricane football.
I believe the Canes will prove him right and prove to everyone else which team is really relevant on November 28, 2009…
Let me extend my hand and welcome you to the U family Maurice Hagens
Glad to have you

Dan Morgan and his pops, hanging out

Morgan was the 1st player in NCAA history to win the Butkus, Nagurski and Bednarik ... IN THE SAME YEAR.

The Canes got their latest three recruits (Davis, Hall and Hagens) from USF's backyard. Hagens looks like another mult-talented athlete, who could play several positions once he enters the college weight program, grows and develops.
What's your take on our last two recruits 86? Anyone else?
As for the comments about J. Berry, it looks like the Canes coaches were right about not recruiting him all along. They seem to know something about what they are doing.
Go Canes!

We better beat them. My district manager and a fellow assistant manager are a USF alum and USF student respectively, and I will be at the game (as will they). I would never hear the end of it

Listen here Sopa
Lucy Pinder is an extremely classy woman...I've never met her but over seen her pictures. I can tell.
Miami will wipe the field with USF. You read it here first.

And so can I get a score prediction?
I am going with...27-10.

Truth...I heard from one NOT so reliable source that Gore is OUT unless he committs by the end of June. What do U hear?
I like him but he has to decide...
Posted by: 86Cane | June 11, 2009 at 10:19 PM
ESPN about the new commit.
Johnny Cash made songs about this guy; he is a runaway train. Hagens is a big and powerful fullback from days gone by. Hits the holes quickly and is athletic enough to make instant lateral cute in order to not be hit in the backfield. On the trap, displays good vision and breaks the ball off the trappers rear end. On the isolation, follows the lead blocker till day light shows then bounce it out or cuts back to the inside. A short strider in the openfield that is actually faster than appears. Doesn't really pull away from many defenders but is no slouch in terms of speed. Tough to tackle because of strength and powerful legs. Leaves would-be tacklers in the dust who try to tackle him low and runs over those who attempt to make chest up tackles. Uses the old school stiff arms at times and would just as soon run over the defender as avoid them. Not unusual to seem him drag opponents downfield. Hagens is a powerful locomotive in cleats that will be a very productive fullback if he is in the right system. He is a real competitor who is fun to watch.

Gore better hurry. All kids better hurry. I bet we see some more commitments after this weekends camp. I'm looking for the Georgia boyz to get on board and maybe Tapley as well. We shall see! If you want to be a Cane, like they said on Snoop Dogg's 1st Album...
That's the American Dream....Fool you better come on in! HAHAHAHA! LOL

bg...thanks, it is getting TIGHT!
Sign now or else...
Posted by: 86Cane | June 11, 2009 at 10:29 PM
It doesn't matter who signs when, unless its that LOI on NSD. UM will give out more schollis then it has because it knows that not every recruit, not every commitment will sign
Posted by: Loco | June 11, 2009 at 10:32 PM
86 I'm not going to pretend to know of any time frame. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is no time frame cuz he's not officially offered. What I can tell you is he is a legacy choice and he knows it but he thinks he's better than he is. He is teeeeeeeeeeeeenie. Someone tried to sell the roscoe comparison and...no. Gore is a RB. A very small one. Not a lot frame to build on either.
There are bigger fish - litterally - to fry. And if you haven't noticed, the staff has been cooking it up here lately.

Mike Irvin, forever Cane
I'm watching an old tape of 94 Canes vs
Cuse, Ryan Collins first start where he hits all those passes, and Graves goes 6-20 with 3 picks, Krein gets 5 sacks.
Shelby Hill Syracuse wide receiver gets down on himself and kicks the football.
Irvin goes over to him at halftime and coaches him up. Tells him not to give up, and that he isn't finishing his routes, tells him to concentrate .. then turns back and says
"One more thing never, ever kick the football again in this stadium, that defense right there will will make you pay"
peace

I know Marti Jr is over there coaching the DL. I'll try to get you a different perspective...we'll see what the kid thinks for real and not what he tells the recruiting sites.

Are we going to have any issues with any of the kids coming on campus now???
All grades and scores in order??

Busy, was that soul II soul?
Anyway, gotta question for the board. Who was the better linebacker, Nate Webster or Dan Morgan?
Posted by: canesluvr | June 11, 2009 at 09:33 PM
Not sure about the lyrics. I saw "En Vogue" on a simple Google search and went with them.
As far as the Nate Webster / Dan Morgan question, I have to wonder if it is really a question. Read this!
http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/morgan_dan00.html
With all the great linebackers that have played at the U, Ray Lewis and Dan Morgan are clearly at the head of the class.
Sorry Nate Webster, Jon Vilma, Jesse Armstead, Darrin Smith, Coach Michael Barrow, Mo Crum, Tiger Clark, George "Juice" Mira, Jr., Rohan Marley, Rod "Destroyer" Carter, Jon Beason, Willie, I mean D.J. Williams, etc. etc. etc.
You are all in the damn good second class behind Morgan and Lewis.

What Truth said does cerainly seem to be the case. Small frame and no offer = ?
Posted by: shwarma | June 11, 2009 at 11:31 PM
Do we know if the coaches are recruiting Glenn as a DT or OL? I am jsut reviewing Hurtt's numbers so curious to know.
Posted by: shwarma | June 11, 2009 at 11:33 PM
Got it busy. Point taken. I am definitely "mis-remembering". I always thought Nate was better, and I mean wayyyy better than Morgan. I don't remember Morgan being that dominating until Nate left and he moved to the middle.
I stand corrected.

The thing about Morgan that I'll always remember is how he stepped up in big games and made clutch plays like the interception against Florida State on the goal line that shifted momentum right before halftime.
Morgan was also versatile. He had more than 100 tackles from an outside linebacker position. Who was the last guy at UM to do that? It may be Morgan. But it was as the MLB that he was a consensus All-American and postseason awards poster boy.
The knock on Morgan, which ultimately cut his NFL career short was that he had durability issues. There was always something wrong with him that he was playing through.
I give him credit for playing through a lot of injuries, but he was always an injury report guy.

I was indeed on USF campus pretty much all day...it was a ghost town most of the day because of the apparent gun issue...Thank you all for the good comments about the blog...Love the new committ today and like bg said expect some georgia boys very soon...
And six i told u man we can go out and get some girls one of these days...haha!
Posted by: timcanes | June 12, 2009 at 01:17 AM
i know gore is super tiny but from what i have heard he has great hands... so why not sign him as a reggie bush/percy harvin type?? I am not comparing him to either of them at all i am just using there playing type as an example...Any1 think that may be possible??
Posted by: timcanes | June 12, 2009 at 01:19 AM
Webster was a beast. But Morgan was doing his thing too. Just took it to another level when he got moved to MLB. Plus the DL was getting better at the same time so that always helps.
And is there any footage out there of the new commit?
Posted by: Esteban | June 12, 2009 at 01:46 AM
I'll say it again, ray lewis was not that great in college, he had some great games, but he didn't have the impact in college like he has in the pro's. One of the main reasons was, after sapp left, teams began running straight at us, and that nullified alot of whatray was use to doing, in fact he got over powered alot, but you put ray behind a good defensive tackle and yall know the rest.
When you look at impact linebackers, ray is in the group, but he's behind alot of guys in my mind that came thru here. He excelled in the pro's once he got his weight up.
To "thee xcuse" you right though man, chris rix has to be considered as one of the all time great Canes. It was like our defense alwas had 12 guys on it when rix qb'ed.
This new committment can be described in 2 words "REAL PHYSICAL" see for yourself, he's coming in to help add grit to the offense!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4Q5QCydWk8
This last committ is the EPITOME of the type team shannon, hurtt and company are putting together. And at the 6:13 mark, expect to see alot of that this year:

You've got to be kidding me
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4250905
god forbid one arrest and we're thug U, 24 and "they are good kids"
He says "they are 18 to 22 trying to find their way".. Aren't ALL college football players (except BYU) usually 18 to 22? I don't see all of them getting arrested
Jump to the 2:00 mark though.. "what can UF learn from Miami?"

You know this Berry kid is probably trouble and I do not condone smoking pot and would not want to smoke it myself or have my kids smoke it BUT CAN WE LEGALIZE THIS CRAP already!!! The CJS waste way toooooo much money and time on arresting people for minor possesion offenses. Not an advocate but have read about many programs that promote legalization in a very effective way in European countries and believe me the US is way behind the 8 ball!
Oh and by the way HOW BOUT Those Lakers!

Canechic, I totally agree though Berry had enough on him someone said (not a smoker so I am not sure waht 28 grams really means) for a felony charge.
Guess he had a little more on him that what you need for a simple puff puff pass with the boys...unless of course he was blazin' with Snoop.
