Each year at Canespace we recognize bloggers who have made significant contributions to the blog during the year. The nominees are often defined as: "Hard core Hurricane fans that have a computer glued to their hands"
This special breed of "five star" bloggers work hard all year long to achieve greatness. They have been known to blog morning, noon and night even during the dead season of Summer. They write features for the blog, recruit new bloggers, make strategic connections, take pictures, cover events and contribute in many ways to our success.
Last year, the first ever class of CSROH 2008 selections chosen by the fans were:
- Manny Navarro
- The Truth
- SolarCane
- Cavaleer (AKA ChinesePunisher, Captain Optimist)
- CanesGirlNC.
This year the nominees are:
Cat5: King of the early morning bloggers and known to attend any and every Canespace event ever held this blogger has had his picture taken with more cheerleaders, players, fans (and some people we don't even know) than any other Canespacer. Cat5, seen here with his favorite player Arthur Bown, even developed a Canespace decal for cars (seen at TOP RIGHT), has made several suggestions on how to improve the blog and according to his wife wears Canespace to bed. Now that is committment! And, I think it is important to know that Canespace official photographer OcalaCane nominated and endorsed Cat5 for the CSROH.
Six: This long time Canespacer formerly known simply as Six is now referred to as the "Artist known as Six". No blogger is more knowledgeable, more articulate or more savvy than numero seis. This guy can name the starting lineup of the Canes 1983 National Championship team, the 2001 National Championship baseball team and the ACLS Champion 2008 Tampa Bay Rays. He writes comments that could be features, has a incredible sense of humor and he shows up when it counts. Six, who is seen here on the field at the 2008 ACC Championship game in Tampa has multiple nominations for this elite award. Vote for him now and often.
UMike: This freshman blogger is relatively new to the Space but like Sean Spence has made a sudden and significant impact on the blog since his arrival. He has written three articles, developed our current banner at the top of the blog and is a regular on The Space. He has attended events, taken photos aqnd helped support our growth and popularity. This young gun, seen here at The UM Spring scrimmage with his son, should be given some serious consideration.
bg1906: He is legend! His 2009 National Signing Day coverage was beyond compare. His incredible research and rapid fire comments on NSD will be the standard by which all others will be measured. You would have thought that he had a private line to Coaches Shannon and Hurtt or had tapped into the fax machine at The Hecht Center or something. Then he tops that off with his annual GAMER feature on EA Sports NCAA 10. Beat that! This is my nomination and to me a no-brainer.
Canechic: The hard-core female phenom has given Canespace her all. A consistent blogger during football, baseball and basketball seasons, she is a serious sports fanatic that knows her stuff about plays, players and keeps score during the many heated battles on the blog. Her husband Angry (seen here at right with son Nick, daughter Nicole and former UM WR Brett Perriman) is also a Spacer. Canechic and her son Nick went with Canespace to the UM-FSU game at The Doak in 2007. But better yet, her daughter Nicole was accepted to UM this year and will be a Sunsation come Fall. Canechic was nominated by last year's inductee CanesgirlNC.
Calvin: This fire breathing, gator hating, blog busting contributor has been with Canespace since we started in June of 2007. Calvin is not only the King of YouTube, an original Spacer but also holds the record for the logest comment on the blog. As blogger RoachCane77 once said the instant you read the first two lines of a Calvin post you absolutely know who it is from. Calvin's rants and tirades against outsiders and for the Hurricanes are legendary. You step on Superman's cape, don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the outlaw ranger and you don't mess with Calvin! Calvin was nominated by CSROH08 inductee SolarCane.
Canez1: This hard hitting and sometimes controversial blogger brings his "A game" everyday. He has been known to insult, confront and even embarrass weaker bloggers in their futile attempts to explain themselves against one of his now famous tirades. He is a recruiting guru who at time knows more truth than SupeCooper, 321Cane, bg or The Truth combined. He is also an original Canespacer from back in the day and that carries some weight too.
Bloggers who deserve an "Honorable Mention": Esteban (original Canespacer and a popular fan's choice); Aqua (another original Spacer, frequent participant at events and Titanic regular); SuperCooper (recruiting guru and NSD contributor); too many others to name.
It is a MULTIPLE choice poll.
Vote for as many Spacers as you feel necessary!

Miami will play in two nationally televised conference games in the first three weeks of the 2009 college football season, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference Thursday.
The return of the Miami-Florida State rivalry to ESPN's Labor Day Monday Night Football helps kick off the 2009 college football season as the Hurricanes will travel to Tallahassee to take on the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. Miami and FSU played on Labor Day in 2004, 2005 and 2006 with FSU holding a 2-1 advantage during that time.
The Hurricanes will then host Georgia Tech on Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN in the home-opener at LandShark Stadium.
Miami's game with UCF on Oct. 17 has also been picked up by CBS College Sports, which is an affiliate of Conference USA. The Hurricanes will face the Knights at 7:30 p.m. at Bright House Networks Stadium.
After the first three weeks of the season (games through Sept. 19), game times and TV schedules will be announced weekly with ESPN/ABC and Raycom Sports making their choices with a 12-day advanced notice beginning on Monday, Sept. 14 (for games on Saturday, Sept. 26).

University of Miami head coach Frank Haith’s 2009 men’s basketball signing class has been nationally ranked No. 19 by Scout and No. 24 by ESPN.
The Hurricanes’ heralded 2009 class is comprised of ESPNU 100 picks Durand Scott (New York, N.Y.), Garrius Adams (Apex, N.C.) and Donnavan Kirk (Detroit, Mich.), in addition to May signee Antoine Allen (Baltimore, Md.).
Scott’s signing in November marked the second-straight season Haith has secured a five-star player rated among Scout’s top-25 overall recruits and the third time for the Hurricanes this decade. Sophomore DeQuan Jones was a five-star recruit in 2008 and was the most lauded signee for Miami since McDonald’s All-American Darius Rice committed to the Hurricanes in 2000.

University of Miami junior closer Kyle Bellamy has been named a finalist for the fifth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, as announced by the NCBWA on Wednesday.
One of five finalists for the prestigious award, Bellamy is among the national leaders with 16 saves this season. In 46 1/3 innings pitched, the Davie, Fla. native allowed just five earned runs while striking out 63 and holding his opponents to a .147 batting average against him.
In a team-high 30 appearances, Bellamy (3-1) allowed just two extra-base hits and finished a perfect 16-for-16 in save opportunities. His 16 saves are tied for fifth in school history for saves in a single season, with 12 of his 16 saves coming from more than an inning of work.
In addition to Bellamy, this year's finalists include Addison Reed of San Diego State, Jake Hale of Ohio State, Matty Ott of LSU and Eric Pettis of UC Irvine.

Collegiate head coaches Frank Haith of the University of Miami and Rob Jeter of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have been selected to assist 2009 USA Basketball World University Games Team head coach Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) this summer, USA Basketball announced today.
The U.S. will look to capture the gold medal at the 24th World University Games, July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. Coaching staff selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim.
"I'm looking forward to working with both of these guys," said Ryan. "I know Frank's coached with some really good people at Wake and at Texas. The fact that he's running his own program now, he's made the NCAA Tournament and the NIT, just shows he's arrived on the coaching scene. He's done a great job at Miami. I had the chance to see his team play. We were in St. Thomas together this year, and I was very impressed with how hard his guys play. He's coached some really good players over the years and brings a lot of knowledge of different types of systems. I'm sure he'll be a great asset for us as we try to bring home the gold.

Does anyone know anything about the QB out of Gulliver Prep, Michael Strauss? He looks like he has pretty good size. There is no Youtube stuff on him.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | June 05, 2009 at 12:49 AM
No offense to anyone, I enjoy everyone's comments. But, in my book Esteban, Calvin, Canez1, & Darcanegel are 1st ballot locks.

86:
I keep hearing that the USF tix allotment will be coming later. Last I heard it would be June sometime. Anything more specific known yet? Thx.
Posted by: JCane | June 05, 2009 at 12:55 AM
Jcane,
I am currently interning at USF in the athletic department. They already told me they can get me tickets but since i recently started I dont want to push my luck. So the more and more i get comfortable I am trying to find out some more info on tickets.
Posted by: Timcanes | June 05, 2009 at 12:58 AM
Thx Timcanes. I actually spent two years at USF as part of my job training in the early-mid nineties. This was all pre-football for USF, and way after all of my childhood, undergrad and grad school years loving the Canes. It's the one away game I'm sure I'll have time to hit, so I want to get tix, and hopefully without getting ripped off like I did to get tix vs FU last year.

The Dude - I saw Strauss up close and personal at the Badger Sports/Scout.com 7 on 7 Tournament here in Tampa at USF. One of the things I kept noticing about him is that he would lock onto 1 WR, maybe look at his 2nd option, but mainly only his 1st.
They have 5 seconds to throw or else they blow the whistle. He never had the whistle blown, but he also didn't look at his 3rd option on down.
He did absolutely nothing for me when I watched him. There were several other QBs there that I saw that were better than him in that tourney - and there were a lot of good players there.
Here's some film on him at camp and also in action with Gulliver Prep ....

This kid was at the 7 on 7 .. Brandon Doughty ... I remember him b/c he has eyebrows that look like two big hairy speedbumps on his face
http://insidetheu.com/news/viewnews.php?v=47de2774b24f0
The kid was slinging it around though
This kid was also there, Blake Bortles .. big kid from Oviedo. I thought he was a LB at first on defense, then I saw him grab the ball and throw some drills

So what QB u liked the most Six?
Posted by: Esteban | June 05, 2009 at 01:47 AM
One player in particular that EVERYONE was watching b/c you could hear him slap the chest of WR's lined up in front of him on each snap ...
http://insidetheu.com/news/viewnews.php?v=49deb892bfad9
Merrill Noel. The kid was a damn pirahna on the field. You could tell he was on the team built primarily of kids from Pahokee and Belle Glades ... those kids were talking noise non-stop, to anyone that had ears - but they were also aggressive as hell.
Honestly, I saw Lamarcus Joyner playing and he has some sick closing speed ... but I'd still take Merrill Noel, those couple of days that I saw them play, over Joyner - and Joyner is considered the #2 DB in the nation according to Rivals and Merrill Noel is ranked #38. Noel almost looked like he was trying to puncture the WR's ribcages off the line.
DeJoshua Johnson was there on that team as well and alot of people were watching him.
Posted by: Six | June 05, 2009 at 01:53 AM
Este - From who I could recognize, I liked this kid ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmE8iuUB-kI&feature=related
Trey Burton. He wasn't the smoothest passer, but the kid just made plays.
I liked the kid from Oviedo.
Christian Green was there, he wasn't as impressive as everyone hyped him up to be. Could be that he just had a bad day, the day I saw him. I know the Crocs are recruiting him hard.
Last but not least, this won't be a popular choice - but - I liked Philip Ely from Plant High. That little kid just gets it. He knows the system, he knows where his WRs will be, he goes through his progressions. He's had Aaron Murray to study, pick the brain of and practice with everyday for two years. When Murray went down early in the season last year, this little Soph. kid named Philip Ely stepped right up and still led them to the State Championship game. Murray started and played the game .. but Ely got them there.

.McGinnis... where have U been old boy? It's been 7/8 months and thought U ran off with one of those Irish Hookers strapped to your back. So waz-up big guy? How's your Dad? How's the bar bizz? Looking for you to get back in the grove and post more often... and keep us up to date with Tenn's improvements. One thing for sure, is that Kiffin has brought back excitement to Tenn and I'm really interested in seeing how Brice does... as I thought, since pulling away from Miami, that Tenn was his best choice for exposure and PT.
Soup,... Thanks for adding me to the list but just being here and reading the great post by so many other bloggers is good enough for me... as the Space is the best source for anything about the U and I give everyone praise for that... Again, "For the Fans... and By the Fans"... It's all good!
So, If I don't make the cut, It's OK, I'm just happy to have found this site... that scratches my itch!

Off Topic... Just a plug for the needy.
Attn: all Spacers that are involved in Home Owner Insurance or Home Owners wanting to take advantage of the Wind Storm mitigation discounts being given or your insurance company is forcing you to add protection.
As most of you know, I work for Rolladen Inc. One of the oldest companies in the country that specializes in Hurricane Protection. We are also the largest company in the State of Florida, in servicing 23 cities... FYI, we were the ones awarded and chosen to do NOAA's... "National Hurricane Center" and there is no statement bigger then that, when there are over 200 hundred companies with a verity of different kinds of protection. Whether it be Shutters, Impact glass doors and windows, Formal entry-way glass doors or Wind screens for those hard to do opening, we do it all. We have a State Licensed General Contractor on our staff and we control everything from our end as we are also the Manufacturer... so there is no middle company to disrupt the flow.
If you need assistance... Now is the time... call me!
