On June 16, 2009 Canespace will celebrate it's second anniversary. After firmly entrenching our place among the major players in the University of Miami Hurricane blogoshpere it is time to celebrate another year of accomplishments.
Who knew that back in the Summer of 2007 when this blog launched under much doubt, scrutiny and criticism, that we would experience such tremendous growth, development and success?
I would like to tell you that we have been humbled by our success over this two year period, but we haven't. We are Hurricane fans: proud, confident and bold. Not to mention the fact that we had to survive several "blog wars" just to get here!
Sure the Canes baseball team won Miami's first ever ACC Championship last year and Jack McClinton led the Canes into the NCAA tourney in 2008 and NIT in 2009 but most Canes fans #1 interest is football. And on the gridiron UM has struggled due to a lack of talent on the field and some inconsistent coaching on the sidelines.
Yet, even with our beloved Hurricanes suffering through a couple of sub-par seasons we have maintained our faith, hope and optimism in this 2009 football team, coaches and players.
Of course this may be the result of the fact that we have been known to drink large quantities of the "kool aid".
Or could it be because Canes Head Coach Randy Shannon has brought in three consecutive top rated recruiting classes restoring depth and talent to the team?
Or it may be due to the fact that he brough in new offensive and defensive coordinators for 2009?
Most likely it's a little bit of all the above.
Anyway you look at it, after over 500 blog posts, 175,000 comments and 2.7 million hits Canespace has been a huge success beyond anyone's expectations.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the original bloggers who have been with us since the beginning. We also want to welcome and recognize the bloggers who have recently joined our little piece of Hurricane heaven known simply as "The Space".
And we want to invite all of those Canes fans out there who either haven't found us yet, or haven't found the courage to post a comment to come on in and join our Hurricane family.
For the fans, by the fans...GO CANES, GO CANESPACE!!!
Am I actually first?

Just read the article at The Herald about T.K.Wetherell of FSWho stepping down. I have to believe this is a sign that the hammer will be coming down and it will be coming down hard in Trailerhassee. This combined with the rampant rumors that Urban Myth will take the money and run to Notre Dame or that the lack of "INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL" will eventually catch-up to them has to bode well for us in Coral Gables. The Canes will own the state of Florida for the next 10-15 years and have something similar to what USC has out west.

.Going into summer ball... Who's got the toughest Job?
Randy Shannon - Head Coach
Aubrey Hill - Wide Receivers Coach
John Lovett - Defensive Coordinator
Joe Pannunzio - Tight Ends/Special Teams Coordinator
Mark Whipple - Offensive Coordinator
Micheal Barrow - Linebackers Coach
Clint Hurtt - Defensive Line Coach
Wesley McGriff - Secondary Coach
Tommie Robinson - Running Backs
Jeff Stoutland - Offensive Line
We all know great offenses fill seats and great defenses win championships... for that reason I say John Lovett. Right now he has a rough diamond awaiting polishing and this year he will be examined and tested like an colonostipy to see what he's made of.
The players and his assistants and fans are all looking at his direction... What will he bring to the table that others could not. What magic does he possess that he infused in North Carolina last year and the year before? I Don't Know, but what ever it is, I say bring it with fire in your heart... Mr John Lovett and let's get the wagon roll'n... Canes
Cat5... out!

Cat5..."and this year he will be examined and tested like an colonostipy to see what he's made of. "
Man that does not sound good I don't want one of those.
I do hope Coach John Lovett brings some respectability to Canes defense

Great articles 86... most recent + 6/13 article. Go Canespacers!
Posted by: jackattck | June 16, 2009 at 08:33 AM
Following last weeks summer camp at Miami, by my count we have now offered 13 CBs. Any ideas on how many we intend to take, and which ones those will be? Sounds like Darius Robinson will be one and Jeremy Davis is another, although he could play WR also. I like the Detroit kid, Dior Mathis on paper, but don't know much about him.

so happy to have found this place, my wife, not so much. keep up the good work, and that goes for everyone. love the articles, but the comments are the cheese in my macaroni.

I hope Lovett is able to improve the teams fundamentals and technique which are sorely lacking and that he can bring some coaching ability and experience to this young staff.
Also, Im not positive, but wasnt Barrow removed from LB coach to a 'defensive assistant' or something like that?
Another assistant that Im looking to see big things from is Swasey, you all know how I feel about our S&C program lately so Im gonna be very interested in seeing how these guys look when they get on the field in Tally. I wanna see if our freshman are noticeably bigger and stronger, do our linemen look to be in better shape or are they gonna be standing with their hands on their hips sucking air like they have many times before. No more getting handled on the lines, no more little skinny DBs afraid to tackle someone. That crap better stop.
I swear, if I see the same looking team physically and I still see fat out-of-shape linemen and weak skill players Im gonna need a straight-jacket.

Rating the best college QB youv'e seen and why Tebow isn't him
from various bloggers
"But here are things that make him drop as compared to QBs I’ve watched:
He had 32 passing touchdowns, and 23 rushing touchdowns in 2007 which is great individually…but his team went 9-4 which is bad.
He still has yet to lead Florida to an undefeated season. This is huge for me. Despite his impressive two national championships (1 starting and 1 as a reserve), both of his teams had 1-loss. Do I think rank a championship as better if it goes undefeated? You betcha.
The QBs I’m going to compare him to this decade are Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Ken Dorsey.
Records for the others:
Vince Young (30-2)
Matt Leinart (37-2)
Ken Dorsey (38-2)
Tebows record as a starter: (22-5)
You can’t tell me Florida hasn’t had the same type of talent Texas, USC and Miami had under those QBs and Tebow’s record is by far the worst. So Tebow’s record is a little unimpressive which doesn’t help him in comparisons.
I want to write more, but my main point, is shouldn’t Tebow lead his Gators to an undefeated season first before people regard him as the best ever? Why? Because there are other QBs that have won a MNC by going undefeated and people are putting Tebow in front of them."
another guy
"Tebow’s last play on the field in his only loss last season was him getting stopped on fourth down and losing the game to an unranked team in his home stadium. Colt’s last play on the field in his only loss last season was handing off to Vondrell McGee to cap a miracle 80 yard drive to take the lead by a single point on the road against a top 5 ranked team in a game in which Texas trailed 22-6 to start the second half."
another
"Great is the most over used word in all of sports.
What you call great is most times just above average. Great comes along maybe once in your life time like Bo Jackson."
peace

CONGRATS 86 on "Da Space's" success. I'm so happy I found this place and have been able to be a part of it. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend a lot of local events because were moving, but I plan on meeting other Spacers for away games that are close to me in Atlanta or NC.

Definition of Greatness
In 25 years coaching at Alabama, Bryant led his teams to
a 232-46-9 record
6 National Championships
15 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships (14 with Alabama; 1 with Kentucky) (and 1 Southwest Conference Championship at Texas A&M)
25 Bowl Appearances (29 including prior teams)
15 Bowl Victories, including 8 Sugar Bowl Wins
3 National Coach of the Year honors
10 Times SEC coach of the year
A member of the College Football Hall of Fame
In 38 years as a head coach for four teams; Bear Bryant only had one losing season. That season was his first year at Texas A & M (1954) when the Aggies went 1-9. However, Bryant led them to a 7-2-1 season the next year. Then, in 1956, the Aggies went 9-0-1 and were crowned Champions of the Southwest Athletic Conference.
that's long term greatness right there.

Rebirth... yes, you are correct, He was moved to assist... I got lazy and CC'd the list off the master and didn't pick up on the shift.
toughest assistants job?... trying to pick just one out of the cluster is unreal... So many positions and so many potentially great players are all lined up just waiting for a little guidance and their shot.
I Don't have a first choice on this one but I bet John will be leaning on special teams... Coach Pannunzio for heavy improvement. Not pick'n on Pannunzio only, as all should be feel'n the heat. Hell, This year is the beginning of "Show Time" ladies and gentlemen... It's time to start your engines and let the coordinators coordinate... and the the players play.
Can You Feel it!!!

This is easy. Without a doubt its Mark Whipple. The offense has been bad and searching for an identity since 2005. We've had a barrage of offensive coordinators and NONE had done the job. So Whipple HAS to perform and get the offense rolling. He is Coach Shannon's saving grace and last chance at and OC. If Whipple fails, Shannon fails, and a new regime will be leading the troops. Lets hope that doesn't happen because I really like Shannon, and I also think Whipple IS that guy we think he is.

Go Canes...Go Cougars...Class of 91..
Posted by: Brian | June 16, 2009 at 10:57 AM
I truly believe that the toughest job is for both of the new coordinators..... We do need an identity on offense but we cannot struggle on defense either so I believe it's tuff to say one is the tougher job ..... The defense has to go out and stik to their fundamentals but ball like they did in highschool..... Idk why but the offense I feel will take care of business it just must be the fact that it's jacory leading us ....
Posted by: UpNorthCane06 | June 16, 2009 at 11:05 AM
Toughest assistant coaching job:
McGriff because of lack of talent/depth
Stoutland because the unit has been horrible the last three/four years
and Pannuzio because special teams has been extremely inconsistent and the coverage teams has been terrible. He really needs to step up.
McGriff and Stoutlands performance will go a long way in determining the number of wins this season. But I thought Pannuzio should've been let go after last year.

Whipple has the toughest...BG you were spot on.
But don't discount the OL's responsibilites. The talent level there is probably as low as any position on the team. The kids that can play aren't ready yet.
He HAS to get that group ready for whip to be successful.
