Our D should be watching the LSU/GT game film to see how LSU shut the option down. JJ shut OU down with Holloway running the option so I know we can do it. Our DE's needs to be discipline and stay home...not getting sucked into the middle. Hopefully the team has matured and learns how to forget about last week’s game, and prepare for this week’s game.

86Cane

MD...the DEs or a bltizing safety have to CRUSH the QB on the first few drives. I mean CRUSH him. The DTs and MLB have to take the FB option, the Des and OLBs the QB and the RB with support from the CBs and safeties.

We NEED turnovers. The way to do that is to pressureand HIT the QB during the pitch. Then a McCarthy scoop and score!

AngryCane

MDcane is the man today!!!

Gators lose, Semiholes lose, pens get crushed, what a good day yesterday!

Go Canes, Go Lakers (I love Luke Walton)!

canechic

That was canechic not angrycane, I hate when he uses my laptop!

The DE IS the option, hence the name- option football. He is turned loose on every play and the QB reads him and what he does determines the pitch or the keep.

Back in the day, the DE read the tackle blocking down and just lit the QB up on every play, whether he pitched, kept or handed to the fullback. The key that NC and LSU showed was that you have to attack the offense, not sit back and read keys. If you read, you lose.

There is no big secret to beating the option. It is NOT about discipline and staying in your lanes and position football. It is about the tackles and MLB taking the fullback and the DE's smacking the QB in the mouth (before he gets past the tackle) and safeties and OLB's actually making tackles on the pitch...at the line of scrimmage.

It is a very simple offense. It is also simple to defend. The key is to man up and make sure that the fullback, QB and pitch man get decked ON EVERY PLAY.

There is a reason no one plays this offense any more. Speed and aggression kill it. Getting your QB hit 40-50 times a game is not a way to engender winning seasons.

If you make the QB pitch before he gets outside the tackle box the game is over.

solarcane

this pretty well sums up all of the above comments

Final rant: When you give up 518 total yards you don’t need to spend the off season telling yourself GT was a fluke

peace

Canez1

TC great post.

The key to beating up the option is penetration. You disrupt the timing and execution of this O and it never gets clicking.

I think we show strong in this game this year. I knew last year was going to be a problem. Especially because they were playing extremely well when we ran into them.

GO CANEZ!!!!!

CanesgirlNC

Canechic did you have a bad experience in the City of Pittsburgh or something? I thought you didn't like Detroit

solarcane

"It is also simple to defend. The key is to man up and make sure that the fullback, QB and pitch man get decked ON EVERY PLAY."

Tex,
In theory yea
I think GTs offensive line has taken that into consideration and most of them seem to be in the right places at the right time.

Everybody that describes how easy it is to stop the option don't really give Johnson much credit for being smart.

Do any of you arm chair defensive coordinators consider for a minute Johnson has already evaluated anything you have come up with?

The guy is a tremendous coach with a bulldozer offense, he wouldn't be 9-4 if he was so easy to shut down.

The only way we beat GT is to score a bunch of points.

GT is gonna get a TON of yards on us but they don't score often enough to beat a 35 point a game offense.

Its OFFESNSE not defense that wins this for Miami

Oops...BTW, article by SOLARCANE!

86Cane

If you make the QB pitch before he gets outside the tackle box the game is over.

Posted by: texascane | June 07, 2009 at 10:04 AM

EXACTLY! U take the "option" out of the option by making the QB pitch the ball early EVERY time.

Simple really: KISS!

86Cane

I don't care if early on the RB get's 6, 10 or 12 yards. Just SMACK the dang QB hard on every play and the turnovers will come.

canechic

Canesgirl I hate the steelers with a passion since childhood and I was ok with the pens until I saw how dirty they play and what a pretty boy Crosby is! I hate Detroit but at least they are true grit hockey players. Do not worry I hate the Flyers too! I could not stand E. Lindros and therefore will never like the Flyers. Oh I really do not like the Eagles either, so canesgirl maybe it is the whole state of Penn!

solarcane

this is Paul Johnson's entre philosophy on
how his offense works.

By proper execution time after time the big play will be there by itself.

We do as Tex says and hit every option man every play for an entire game we shut GT out.

In the real world our guys practicing for six days against an offense they see once every twelve months, then going out and playing flawless... Kool Aid anyone?

peace

texascane

I really think that we played a lot of "soft" defense and offense in the last couple of years.

I think RS was just trying to keep the team in the game and hope that we would have a chance to win late.

He had no offense and the defense was just protecting turf. Hopefully, he is getting the players and coaches that he needs to turn them loose on both sides of the ball. That is why Whipple is so important to this team. I can't believe that Randy can rein him in...even if he wants to. The defense gets to play fast and loose if they know that the O is going to score points.

The other key will be special teams. Go back and look at the LSU game. The Tigers blew GT out based on special team play. The game stats are almost identical - except for the big plays on special teams...38-3 was the result.

When we played them, GT threw the ball 10 or 12 straight times to start the game. That was to get the safeties out of the run game and it worked. I hope we have the corners to man up and cover like the old days and can play the run with the SS.

We'll see.

KillerBeez41

Great break down on how to stop the option TC. Making it assignment football makes it so much easier on the players as well, there's no, if doesnt have the ball go to the pitch. Its MLB and DT tackle the FB, and DE kill the QB. OLB play QB to pitch as well as safeties. Canez1 made another great point in the fact that pressure from the DT will absolutely disrupt the timing of the option. Last year it seemed like we were reading and told if this isnt the case then go here or something. We had it down for a little bit, but after awhile it was just too much. Those damn cut blocks will get into a DT head though, b/c their getting their knees taken out each play.

KillerBeez41

^^If this doesnt happen then go to the pitch...^^^^

I had a gallon for breakfast!

UM 31, GT 20

Pass me another gallon dear...and make it grape this time.

texascane

With regard to "armchair coaches", I played in the Houston Veer offense, which is what GT really runs (not the true "Bone"), in junior high, won two Texas state championships in high school playing it; and four years of college ball in the same offense.

In addition, each of those years, we saw the offense at least 6-7 times a season from the teams that we were playing.

I would be willing to state that, "Yes, I do know more about the option offense than the staff at the "U".

I report...you decide.

thanks for the kind words everyone...me & the Mrs. have been tied up with the new one...I've gotten used to not sleeping :) :) :).

but 90 Days until kickoff! Have we done the Legends of the Fall yet because you can vault me for:

Offense: Jacory Harris
Defense: Spence

I know, way to go out on a limb, right? lol

We are going to surprise a lot of people this year. Whip is going to take this to another level. Just pray Jacory doesn't get hit with the injury bug.

I think we can take GT, just follow the same gameplan that LSU did in the Peach Bowl. They effectively SHUT THEM DOWN for 4 qtrs and rendered Nesbitt irrelevant by doing their jobs. At this point, I am more confident in Whip than Lovett...jmo.

solarcane

Tex,

What you did ten twenty years ago was magnificent I'm sure.

I'll send you my Glory Days CD and we can sit around and hear about how the Dallas Cowboy scouts were at all your high school practices.

as far as "coaching" against the Paul Johnson on a fan blog... and patting yourself on the back because you played against a similar (but not the exact offense) just doesn't really impress me.

When you, me, Truth, soup, Canez1 describe how we would attack or defend another team makes us armchair coaches I didn't mean to offend you.
You need to grow a real thick skin if your gonna come on and brag about everything you did when you were a kid.

welcome back carlos,

I said the same thing above, Whipple's offense will beat GT not Lovett our our defense.

Soiler...why U gots to always pick on Tex? Just cuz he punked U? LOL

I like Tex, butI like the sweet nectar even more. Raise a glass and drink the KoolAid. Drink it on down, tastes SO good!

Or, U can just snort it straight from the box like CaneFantasy and Captain Optimist. Just cut down a straw to about four inches and insert it into the box...

solarcane

If you guys slow down and remember

LSU got the ball on the 40 to start the game.

Jefferson LSU completed all his passes going right down the field and scored.
( nothing to do with GT option)

1st qtr LSU 7- GT 3 All LSU offense nothing to do with stopping the option

Jefferson was then 9-9 and LSU scores again14-7

the LSU OFFENSE is now dictating what GT can do when the get the ball

14-3 LSU

GT fumbled a punt setting LSU up at 19 td LSU drive
LSU up 21 -3

You guys starting to get the idea???

NOTHING to do with stopping GT's option
EVERYTHING to do with playing great offense and special teams

I could go on the entire game but I've made my point

Whipple scores a lot we win
you think we stop dwyer and GT running your dreaming

peace

solarcane

Soiler...why U gots to always pick on Tex? Just cuz he punked U? LOL

I must have been absent that day enlighten me how i was punk'd

actually I enjoy almost all of Tex's posts i just hate Glorydays syndrome.

Read the beginning of the LSU GT game post and realize geezus the solar knows wtf

it wasn't stopping the option, boneheads, it was OFFENSE putting GT out of the game plan

TJL

I'm glad we have GT early, they seem to have more turnovers earlier than later

solar! what's up homie....

Just wait until we see what an offense with an identity looks like. I think we head 3-0 into the OU game. vault that one, too.

Esteban

solar, LSU's defense though didn't miss nearly as many tackles as we did so GT was busting long runs right off the jump. GT gained 10-15 on some carries, but then they'd go two plays with 1 yard runs and end up in a 3rd and long which their offense isn't built to get. now if the offense doesn't go and get them 21 quick points GT has a chance to still run its base offense and possibly wear down the defense. but was a team effort spanking GT. last year our defense was where it needed to be a lot of the time but missed the tackle. no defense works if guys are missing tackles.

Esteban

now with that said, even if the defense was making tackles and we forced GT to punt time and time again that doesn't do nothing for us if we have throw INTs for TD like we did last year.

Sebastian

Alot will have to do with our beef up front

We are better off there which is going to make a difference

Having 10 days off before this game cant be over-looked

We get up early and hold a 27-10 lead at HF changing things up for them and we go on to a convincing 37-24 win..Our only complaint being we got a little complacent in the 2nd half

DAU!!!

DEs. Option assignments. DTs have to hit the FB every play. DEs responsible for QB hit his arse every play and stretch the play outside without giving up contain. Saftey's and LBs have to take on/avoid blocks and play pitch man with CBs NOT giving up outside contain forcing the action back inside to the pursuit. Also DL HAS to stay off the ground. Have to defeat chop blocks.

Thanks SOUP and thanks Canespace. CSROH Class of 2009...We did it yall! Congrats to you all my fellow inductees! LOL

Esteban

thing is the DE's have to beat their blocks. GT doesn't leave them unblocked every down - sometimes they do, but not always. CBs need to beat the WR blocks, too. like solar said its not easy. if it was then dwyer doesn't end up the offensive player of the year last year. rememeber the defense doesn't know if the plays going left/right, to the fullback, just a QB run, or the QB going to pitch to the back, or if he looks like he's gonna run then throws. its called the option for a reason. keeps the defense under pressure to stay disciplined. only takes one guy to get out of position for them to have a big play.

Tex,
I went back and re read my comments to you,
I apologize for the personal shyt, that was bush.

We all want to beat GT we just all have a different plan on how to do it I guess.

timcanes

2-2 after the first four games losing to gt and ok...we will go 9-3 on the yr and be happy!

texascane

I reiterate my position. Hopefully, Randy has the players on defense now and will turn them loose. The GT offense was not all that great last year. Here is how they fared in the ACC:

DATE OPPONENT RESULT
6-Sep @ Boston College W 19-16
13-Sep @ Virginia Tech L 20-17
4-Oct Duke W 27-0
18-Oct @ Clemson W 21-17
25-Oct Virginia L 24-17
1-Nov No. 15 Florida State W 31-28
8-Nov @ No. 19 North Carolina L 28-7
20-Nov No. 23 Miami (FL) W 41-23

In addition, here are the scoring stats for the ACC offenses last year:

SCORING OFFENSE G TD FG XPT 2XP DXP Saf Points Avg/G
1. Florida State 13 51 25 47 1 0 2 434 33.4
2. North Carolina 13 45 14 44 0 0 2 360 27.7
3. Miami 13 42 18 40 1 0 2 352 27.1
4. Clemson 13 40 15 40 0 0 1 327 25.2
5. Boston College 14 43 14 42 1 0 1 346 24.7
6. Georgia Tech 13 40 12 33 3 0 1 317 24.4
7. NC State 13 37 16 33 1 0 0 305 23.5
8. Virginia Tech 14 34 23 32 0 1 1 309 22.1
9. Maryland 13 34 15 32 1 0 0 283 21.8
10. Wake Forest 13 31 18 27 2 0 1 273 21.0
11. Duke 12 29 13 28 0 0 0 241 20.1
12. Virginia 12 24 9 22 0 0 0 193 16.1

The much maligned Nix attack actually outscored GT last year in the ACC.

Is it more about our defense than GT's Offense?

Hassan

Guys to me no matter what type of offense you play the game always is won and lost upfront. If our big boys on the D Line can control the LOS and get off blocks then we win the game. Also i want to note guys like Marcus Fortson and even Bailey last yr was basically rookie's out there this yr they are a year better a year more experienced, i believe we get off our blocks better and i can not say enough how having two guys like Ray Ray and Telemque back there very Big safety's are like two more Linebackers, it is funny our safety's are bigger then half our linebackers lol. I predict a guy like Spence will not let us lose this game, look for our Big's up front to create havoc and guys like Spence to be flying around back there, I predict he will have a 15 tackle game.

canesluvr

Good discussion on stopping the option, but I have to disagree with you guys on how to stop the option. The key first and foremost is penetration and disruption by the DT's. The have to stop all inside runs. Once that's done, the DE's do not hit the QB. The key to stopping the option is forcing it to go sideways for and allow pursuit to get there. With the DE hitting the QB, that leaves one less defender to stop the ball. The key for a QB in the option is to read the DE and if the DE shades to the RB, turn it up field. IF the DE attacks the QB, pitch the ball and allow the RB to turn up the field. If the DE stays on the LOS , or a yard above the LOS and makes the QB take an extra second or two to decide what to do, the pursuit gets to the ball and the defense wins that play.

Case in point, remember back in the 2001 season, UM played Va. Tech. Kevin Jones got to big runs, both times, it was because the DE either attacked the QB or forced the QB to pitch early enough before pursuit can get there. In the Rose Bowl, most of the time, the DE didn't leave the LOS. Just stayed level with the LOS, pads parallel, and not committing either way until the QB made a decision with the ball. Once he did, the DE pursuit to the ball and was a part of the tackle.

The key, is to string it out and use the sideline as a defender.

CB's must get off the blocks, but with GT, that's easier said than done. Bey-Bey Thomas, is a glorified TE out there in space. I think he's about 6'3-6'4 and 230lbs.

And, coaches must teach techniques to beat cut blocking. Once that get into the heads of the linemen and LB's, its over.

SOUP

and when is the deadline to choose cuz with the injury bug (knock on wood) always hitting us hard i want to wait it out haha
