On September 17th the first sophomore to ever win the ACC football player of the year award visits Miami. Yellow Jacket running back Jonathan Dwyer led the ACC in rushing last season churning out 1,395 yards at 107.3 yards per game. Dwyer scored 12 rushing touchdowns, helping Georgia Tech to an impressive 9-4 season.
Dwyer is a preseason first team All American and is looking forward to another monster year. He stated that even after the twelfth game last season he still didn’t comprehend all of the Paul Johnson option offense. He says he is comfortable now and says the entire offense is playing with more confidence. The offense has worked hard on getting the pitch timing down and the offensive line has vastly improved on learning their blocking assignments that Coach Johnson installed.
With QB Josh Nesbitt completing just 44 percent of his rare passing attempts GT relies heavily on its stable of running backs. How wide receiver Demaryius Thomas made the All ACC Team is still a bit of a mystery, but every GT running back is quite capable of taking the ball to the house.
Georgia Tech returns 95% of its first team offense, they are well coached, athletic and have the desire it takes to win, don’t sell the Jackets “gimmick” offense short.
Defensively things aren’t so peachy in Atlanta. The lone returnee on Tech’s formerly stacked defensive line is number 91 Derrick Morgan. Morgan emerged as a quality player last season recovering 4 fumbles and blocking a field goal to go along with his 51 tackles.
The king pin of the GT defense is junior All American safety Morgan Burnett. He led the nation in interceptions last season with 7, almost doubling the entire Hurricane team total. Burnett was a second team All American last season as a sophomore. He is touted as being even better as a junior.
Look for Jacory Harris and Burnett to test each other early in this game. GT has only one Burnett but Whipple can rotate a seemingly endless supply of fast receivers to take him deep down the field and wear him down.
The Tech defense has to tackle some of the best running backs in the nation every day at practice, they are sound fundamentally but their defensive line isn’t going to intimidate our offense. Here are some GT tidbits:
Paul Johnson emphasizes to his quarterbacks that they don’t have to make the big plays, what they have to do is execute the offense. By proper execution time after time the big play will be there by itself.
The quarterback reads last season were deliberate, Johnson feels from what he’s seen this Spring they are much more fluid and automatic with the QBs going to the best option instantly rather than thinking about it.
GT rushed for 472 yards against us last season. Bill Young was perceived to be a defensive guru, so a lot of people blamed it on our players being too young. The fact that most of Tech’s players were young didn’t enter the discussion.
Tech rambled for an embarrassing 8.4 yards per jaunt against us last season. They average HALF that this year, they will be first and 10, every two and a quarter plays.
Best way to stop the option has been debated and explained by many a Canespacer since we last played Paul Johnson. Best way to beat Paul Johnson is how Whipple does it: score a whole lot of points a whole lot of ways.
Don’t kid yourselves about shutting Dwyer and GT down, they will run on us most of the day.
Paul Johnson is a rambling gambling man, his team can move the ball, but pitching it all over Land Shark will certainly present a few Tech miss cues.
Whipple knows he might only be on the field on offense a few minutes a quarter.
Look for Jacory to get the team down the field in big chunks; he has the receivers and backs to do it.
Final rant: When you give up 518 total yards you don’t need to spend the off season telling yourself GT was a fluke.
Naples (FL) Lely High School RB Darion Hall says a commitment to Miami could come as early as this weekend.
Hall currently lists 22 scholarship offers with the most recent from Purdue (which offered yesterday) and South Carolina (which offered last week).

Cal what do you think of the kid?
He has a nose for the endzone and shows some good speed and quickness. I also like his size.
The kid wants to be a Cane bad.
He's all good in my book!

Rivals analyst Jamie Newberg FWIW
Q: Is Tennessee guard commitment Jose Jose (6-2, 355) going to take over for Alabama’s Terrence Cody as the biggest player in the SEC?
A: “He’s got a lot of girth to him, but once he gets to Knoxville and is in a college strength and conditioning program, I think he’ll lose a bunch of weight and gain some muscle. The kid has exceptional feet and athletic ability, so I think he’s got a chance to be a very good player for them. If he was a little trimmer, there is no question he would be rated higher. In talking with some coaches, they said Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy were all similarly built at the same stage, and look what Ed Orgeron did with them.”

Canez1, Darius Hall looks sharp, esp if he's a real 6'1'' as Aqua said. Good vision, strength and agility, acceleration too. If he has the right mentality I'm sure he'll be a Cane.
