Ted Hendricks, Danny Brown, Julio Cortes, Bill Hawkins, Willis Peguese, Kevin Patrick, Danny Stubbs, Greg Mark, Rusty Medearis, Jerome McDougle, Kenard Lang, Kenny Holmes. These are some of the names of Hurricanes past who played defensive end at The U.
Now as the 2009 season approaches, another Hurricane hopes to place his name among the greats at that position.
UM Sophomore Marcus Robinson (seen here with OcalaCane) enters this season as the starting right defensive end for a Miami defense that desparately needs to improve in many areas and in many ways.
The Canes were last in rushing defense, last in interceptions, next to last in scoring defense and red zone defense, seventh in passing defense, and fifth in sacks in the ACC last year.
That type of mediocre production will not get it done in a tough conference or against an Oklahoma Sooner team with plenty of offensive firepower and a Heisman candidate at QB in Sam Bradford.
Robinson, who was recruited by former UM linebacker and current Hurricane defensive coach Michael Barrow, came to Miami as a highly touted linebacker out of Homestead high school. He played in 12 games in 2008 and finished the season fifth on the team in tackles (35), tied with DT Allen Bailey for the lead in tackles for loss (9), and recorded four sacks while linemate Bailey lead the team with 5.
Bill "Forever" Young was brought in for what turned out to be a one year stint as Defensive Coordinator in 2008 and managed to do a respectable job with a group of very young players.
But if the Canes are going to make any noise in The ACC this year, new Defensive Coordinator John Lovett and Defensive Line coach Clint Hurtt (seen here with Ocala) will have to teach, coach and motivate many of these same players to new levels in 2009.
While much has been made about the Canes registering only four interceptions last year (only two of those were by defensive backs) there has been very little chatter about the Canes defensive line and the lack of pressure and containment they produced. If you can remember the sight of FSU QB Christian Ponder running through and around the tired Miami defense last year, then you know where the Hurricanes must improve this season.
As always, good defense starts up front at the point of attack. If the Canes are to be successful in 2009, it will most likely be the result of a significant improvement along the defensive line.
And that improvement must start with the Canes most talented defensive lineman, Marcus Robinson.
Too slow. Wish I could say I was bloated on lobster, butter and beer, but no excuse

Georgia Tech backup QB Shaw breaks collarbone
ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw will miss at least the start of the season after breaking a collarbone during Saturday's scrimmage.
Head coach Paul Johnson said Shaw is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
"It's really unfortunate," Johnson said of the injury. "Jaybo was playing really well and was having a good camp."
He had a touchdown run early in the scrimmage and then was injured when a teammate showed him a picture of University of Miami defensive lineman Allen Bailey.
He said, "I figured that it would be less pain-full to break my collarbone now, then to face Allen and the Hurricane defense on September 17th".

aces,
I used to host Banana Land
"Fast Times, Quick Cars, and Cosmic Advice"
for a few years
It got rave reviews in an Australian drag racing magazine for some reaon, and I made some friends over there, but have lost touch.
I was a regular contributing writer for Draglist.com for Bill Pratt when he was just getting it going.
Had a lot of Fun with the guys at Gasser Madness when Byron Stack was starting up.
I would use the nick gonzo on most of the car sites.
I drag raced at Miami/Hollywood Dragway, Moroso Motorsports Park when it was Palm Beach Dragway, then Moroso, but not under the new name.
I don't have any bad azz rides now but I still am hoping to have a 48 Anglia with a small block Chevy/glide before I leave here.
I'll be coming to meet you soon , does your showroom have a website?
peace

I saw on Rivals that Lemonier said his mom likes UM, fwiw. We all know how important it is to have mom like the school these days.... (ie all of the Luc discussions!). :)
Note the end of MDCane's link above. The PB Post article reports that there is more secrecy than ever at this stage of the season with a booster who has watched practice for years having been asked to leave. With Nix gone we can be assured the Canes haven't found a tricky way to implement the WR bubble screen option this year, huh?
