Back-up Quarterbacks Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith announced today that they were leaving the University of Miami.
The shocking and stunning announcment came just two weeks before the Canes first game of the season on Labor Day against FSU in Tallahassee.
The moves leave Miami severely depleted at the QB position with only first year starter Jacory Harris and Freshman A.J. Highsmith, who has been on campus all of about three weeks, as the second string QB for the 2009 season.
This sudden announcement comes on the heels of the highly publicized transfer of former UM QB Robert Marve to Purdue over the Summer.
Marve, who struggled on and off the field at Miami in 2008, was suspended twice last season by Head Coach Randy Shannon for violating team rules and poor class attendance.
Now the Hurricanes have lost three QBs in three months and face the difficult task of facing a tough early schedule and the entire 2009 season with one QB with very limited playing experience and one that went to his high school prom a few months ago. Not exactly what Shannon or new offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple would have wanted.
Canes fans literally lit up the message boards this afternoon to express their shock, fear, anger and confusion over the news.
Some immediately jumped to conclusions and began questioning Shannon's coaching style and leadership ability. Some fans questioned how this situation could happen so suddenly and so close to the season opener. A few fans even wondered out loud: "What happens if Jacory gets hurt?"
Others took a calmer and more measured approach and attempted to minimize the loss citing the fact that neither Cook nor Cannon were likely to see much if any playing time unless Jacory was injured.
Some stated their support for the coaches and players involved and simply moved on.
A few fans also stated that this situation happens at many programs as players see the competition in front of them and decide they might be better off at another University where more playing time beckons.
The reality is that while however discomforting or disturbing these decisions may have made even the most hard core Hurricanes fan feel, their impact may never be felt unless the unthinkable happens.
But then it was always true, even before today's decisions were announced, that If Jacory goes down the Hurricanes hopes are likely to go right with him.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again.
Give him a million chances, and Wright still would've NEVER been able to put together the drive that Kirby did against FSU in 07'.
Make no mistake, it wasn't all Kirbs' arm on that drive, seeing as there were some significant runs in there to, but I'll bet my b@lls that Kyle woulda' still blew it.

Only a week ago, most Canes fans shuddered at the thought of TC or CS coming into the game, yet felt completely confident with Jacory at the helm. It seems now, that many Canes fans feel that our season is doomed and have done a 180 regarding their confidence in Jacory Harris. Just a reminder: Jacory was the starter then & is the starter now. It's not as though Taylor Cook or Cannon Smith were the linchpins to the success of our season. They were most likely going to see practice squad time or garbage time - just like AJ will, now. Ask yourself, "would I have felt THAT much better seeing Taylor Cook hand off & throw dump screens than AJ?".
By no means am I excited or happy about these moves, but it's being blown up to be more than it needs to be.
With that being said - I'm out.
Go Canes!

Don't get me started on geek references! I used to have the "Empire" song as a ringtone on my cell phone. People would say, "oh, you have that Star Wars Darth Vader song". I would tell them, "no, its a song we play in the Orange Bowl to get fired up at 'Canes games!"

Posted by: The Truth | August 26, 2009 at 06:30 PM
From Greg Cote...
"Aside to new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple: Put the playbook on an instant diet by eliminating any stuff that posed any risk to Harris such as quarterback keepers...."
No injuries to JH and the Canes will have a good season...
Posted by: Montreal Cane | August 26, 2009 at 06:39 PM
Yep!! Cote wrote it!
So it MUST be true!! Send that along to Mickey...
LOL
Posted by: The Truth | August 26, 2009 at 06:45 PM
I dont consider myself to be all that bright
But I dont think that Coach Whipple has any QB keepers in that playbook
Wildcat type maybe but not the sneak with a 6'4 190 QB when we have studs in the backfield
Posted by: Sebastian | August 26, 2009 at 06:46 PM
And you know how important the QB keeper is to Whips gameplan..
Not knocking you Montreal...I just can't believe these writers can't find better things to put in print.
Posted by: The Truth | August 26, 2009 at 06:48 PM
Monty do you really think whip would risk getting jacory broken in half with a QB keeper? those writers and their imaginations.
Posted by: Daytoncane | August 26, 2009 at 06:51 PM
Nashville, welcome to the Space. Keep rockin.
Carlos, that's why I said Kyle was a what if. You never know what could have happened if he'd had a good OC and Carson Palmer is a pretty good example of what can happen after one arrives.
G&T, I for one never called Kyle a punk. Matta fact, I remember CoCane and I picking him and Leggett as our LOF a few years back, and even arguing with some fool about whether or not he might sneak into the first round after the A&M game of 2007.
BUT, he had some serious mental-QB problems. And in 2005, you can't say he didn't have a serious supporting cast, offense and defense, not great but legit.
Still, he stood in there and took the blows, even if a lot of it was his own fault. He always got up and played the next down. I give him credit for that much at least.

One play away from playing....Something happened that we don't know...
Posted by: Montreal Cane | August 26, 2009 at 06:55 PM
Sincerely,
NOTHING happened. Cook has a hard time with Highsmith getting second team reps as a frosh. Cook let it get to him and his play suffered.
He wasn't necessarily getting outplayed but he deserved a good old fashioned - get your head out of your a*s - demotion. He didn't like it. So, he took his ball and went home.
There's no secrets. There's no mystery.
I'm sure either he or someone from his camp will eventually spill the beans and the beans will be that ^^^^^^
Posted by: The Truth | August 26, 2009 at 07:00 PM
P.S. Cav, I never said Randy could not coach, I said he is a terrible communicator sometimes! It is my opinion that Cook would still be here if Randy had named him the backup QB.
>>>>>
Sarasota, that's the whole point. Shannon COMMUNICATED TO COOK THAT THE COMPETITION WAS WIDE OPEN.
I fail to understand the miscommunication.
Cook got sat down for playing poorly by WHIPPLE, not Shannon WHIPPLE.
Cook showed his puzziness and buckled.
Now what does that have to do with Shannon's ability to communicate?? I guess Adderly, Wylie, Wiggins, Sweet Chuck, and Bryant all were casualties of Shannon's inability to communicate.
Shannon tells each recruit every year this very simple thing.
"NEXT YEAR I'M GOING TO RECRUIT SOMEONE TO TAKE YOUR JOB."
What's not clear about that??
This is what he told Marve and Marve said he liked it. Shannon gave Marve the keys to the program and guess what Marve did...GAVE THEM BACK.
I guess Shannon couldn't communicate well enough with Douchegene and Weener.
Come on, there's nothing to any of this communication BS.
If kids are scared and not confident, DO NOT COME HERE.
I thought that's what we all wanted, and hated about Coker, because he didn't do this, he did exactly what you're saying Shannon should've done with Cook.
All the punks and limp-dikks have been shown the door. Now we can get down to business.
