Nix or no Nix, Jacory goes down and U are gonna have a lot of company up there on that bridge. And they will NOT be there for the beautiful view either!

A thought for the space...is this perhaps a key turning point for the O-Line working their a** off as a unit and being better than we expected?

Granted they never wanted to give up sacks or get somebody killed back there, but is this that thing that gets them to work even harder. After all Jacory seems to be a true leader so one would think these guys want to protect their guy (or their baby as I think B. Wash or Ben Jones said)

this is a bit off topic, but...

it's going to be real funny after this season when the draft comes up. i want to see how many of these "great" gator players get drafted on the first day.

im just amazed of how many supposedly "great" players the SEC has. im not disrespecting the conference becasue it is good, but a lot of those players are really average.

im going on a rant because im watching the LSU/Arkansas game from 2007. the majority of these guys are just average players in the NFL.

thats why the U is different from every other school. when you see our lineup, the guys you are looking at will be diference makers in the NFL.

Sebastian

A little rest for JH during the FAMU game Whipple breaks out the option with Jamal Reid under center James and Berry at FB, Chambers and Lamar"ACC FOY"Miller at the wings.
All is well now

CHICKEN LITTLE, stop, please, I can't laugh like this any longer, it hurts so bad. I'm begging you. Why are you even here, it's depth players at a position that won't be splitting reps this year at all? Shouldn't you be waiting to come out when something bad happens to Fox?

A quote from Cote:

"UM is in this spot because first Marve and then Cook and Smith were smart enough students to read the writing on the wall, perhaps because it might as well be spelled in capital letters and underlined in red:

JACORY HARRIS IS THE MAN.

He is Shannon's guy.

He is the Canes' franchise quarterback.

He is the player to whom Shannon has hitched his wagon."

And there it is right there.

Shannon live or dies as a coach with one player: Jacory Harris.

cav you know i had to mess with you on this one. In all honesty to, i never saw a qb 6'6 or taller play that well long term. Unless scott mitchell was 6'6 that played in detroit although he had it'll never hurt any qb that has brett perimann, herman moore and whoever that 3rd guy was, oh yeah, morton.

I can't post them all, but after this news broke, these last 2 blogs have got to be to of the funniest in the history of CANEspace.
I'm not worried about jacory, one way or another, the show must go on. As of right now, the last true qb standing, jacory harris. I like how when jacory was on lebetard's show and he was about to say, whether marve was here or not i wanted him to be here cause i was going to beat him out anyway, jacory has that fire.

Than for virginia to tell that man they didn't think he was that good, than he came back and bust their azz, make no mistake about it gentlemen, shannon has found his man. In headcoaching, the qb and headcoach are what sets the tone. aj highsmith is in that mold, stephen morris coming in, sounds like he's in that mold.

All i know is, this will bring those who've toughed it out and who continue to put it all on the line for the guys next to them, this will bring them closer.

miamimike01

Let's not forget:

Cook and Smith QUIT on this football team. Blah, blah, blah, 'I'll miss my teammates, I loved my time here", BS.

Those two screwed us, the coaches, and their former teammates. And, broke their promise and contract with the University and staff.

All this well-wishing makes me sick. Cook: "I made a decision and I'll have to stick with it". What about your ORIGINAL decision to come to Miami? What about that one?

Show some guts and character wherever else they take quitters.

Calvin

Also, in the words of alot of players but more recently javariss james, "If you don't like competition, DON'T COME HERE"!

It's to the point now that when players transfer, nobody on here should be questioning why, if you been following the team and the direction shannon is going in, you already know why.

solarcane

Shannon said it best in that article:

If it was Jacory, he probably would have left too.
Shannon knows exactly how today's kids are.

Jacory sure as hell isn't gonna sit on the bench two years because it's all about the U.

Thats exactly right no matter how much you want to flaunt the" if he can't compete he doesn't belong at the U." that's mostly just old azz fan-speak

It's not fear of competing, it's seeing the guy ahead can do no wrong.

Be patient sit on the bench three years...
Bite me.
If I'm a player I want to play not have an NC ring because I threw 14 passes mopping up for three seasons.

Jacory's don't come along very often, Shannon knows this. Cook and Cannon knew it, Highsmith is going to find out about it.

Bet you ass Jacory would be starting for Oregon this year had Marve stuck around, and Shannon decided he liked him after all. Don't kid yourselves with its Magic to be a backup at Miami bull crap.

peace

Alex

I don't know why no one has brought this point. Doesn't mark Whipple work directly with the quarterbacks and the offense? And I'm pretty sure that Shannon relies on the MW's evaluations when making his decisions, if indeed Cook was demoted wouldn't that be based on MW's assessment?

Why the heck the same people who got the hots for MW, are now questioning his judgment? Qbs normally leave because of their relationship with the position coach not the head coach. They spend most of their times with the head man.

Someone said earlier that MW said all these great things about Cook's potential, it means that Cook was doing great in practice. What did you expect MW to say, "my qbs suck they don't have a grasp of the offense and we need to recruit better backup qbs"?

Nothing changes from where we were yesterday. I'm still a 12%. If JH goes down with or without Cook we would be screwed. The same way, if T-back goes down, UF is screwed. If OKlahomo's qb goes down, they are screwed.

The Truth

Shannon live or dies as a coach with one player: Jacory Harris.

Wait a minute...

NO!!! He doesn't live and die with one player...he chose his QB. He has one guy that he feels is the leader for this group.

And he is.

Cote and you just made that sound like a bad thing.

Isn't a coach supposed to settle on a guy?

That guy is Jacory. And no...cook wasn't even close. Highsmith had been coming along pretty well too.

IMO Highsmith can't hold Cooks jock. But he was getting reps because he earned them. If the backup can't hack that the he DOES need to go.

My point is, the back up SHOULD be able to hack that. What is a HC supposed to do, it's not his "fault" he has a very good signal caller that happens to be a sophmore. So to say he has chosen to live and die by one player is totally not fair.

He's SUPPOSED to pick a guy. One guy. Not a committee...not at QB.

Now if I misunderstood what you meant, I appologise but come soup...you run a CANES blob. Since when has it been the Canes way to coddle a back up at ANY position?

shwarma

86 are we on pace to set the record for posts in a day (I would imagine NSD has the record)?

By the way, I think we need to start having a competition on here that is two fold, best (untrue) reason Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith left and best (unfathomable) way to protect Jacory all year.

My two cents to start:

1) Taylor wanted to go home and Cannon has the big bucks so Choker recruited Taylor and Cannon to be the next Turf Face and Jitters and build the program with their "wealth" of "experience"

2) Just have Iam Symonette line-up at all five OL positions

Adversity builds character and the best thing about this situation is, we gotthe right man in place to when things like this happen, he just adjust and move forward, can't dwell on it, it's out of his control, NEXT!

This who's probably pissed off the most though, the o-line, because they blocked as hard as they could for them, and they quit on the o-line, this is what's going to make this o-line block that much harder, not because they don't want him to get hurt, but because he's the qb who rose thru all the adversity.

This is the correct line of thinking here. Not so much for Smith. He was never going to see the field. Ever. Let him go.

But Cook was supposed to fight for a spot. Earn his #2 role and bide him time like all the other "greats" around here.

WTF is all this "we wish you well" crap about??? He abandoned ship!

That's not cool.

5:30 AM practices this season. Is that to keep the Media away, or is it so the players are forced to be sharp and have more of their day after classes?

SuperCooper

We'll be fine. This is probably for the best, as we get to spread out QB's now and not have more then one Freshman or Sophomore.

Matt Drudge

I haven't posted in a while, but here it goes.

1. Make no mistake about it, this situation is a PR nightmare. Hope the news dies down quickly.
2. We are in the same position we were in yesterday, but I have to agree, now some opposing defenses will be taking late hits on Jacory.
3. It would be a mistake to go back to 1 QB a year deal. USC doesn't seem to have a problem retaining top backups. Hopefully, we will not either.
4. I sincerely hope the team was aware of it before it went down this morning.
5. I would like to believe Highsmith passed Cook on the depth chart. But my head says that's not the case here.

Anyway, 8-4 was realistic with a 2-2 record after 4 games (GT, OU losses).

Here is to hoping we go 12-0 (I am a closet 12%er), but I am in the show me mode with Whip too. Got seriously burned with Rich the not so rich Olsen.

Sebastian

Whipple told Cook he needed alot of work to keep up the #2 spot. They saw AJ improving and grasping the playbook and he got that feeling he had no chance here.

I heard JH call a cetain radio show and he was playing video games at Cannons house so I dont feel his has anything to do with PT

Lets bottom line this....86 got together with AJ and said anytime you see time at QB get the ball to #4. Thats and that alone put him at #2

canechic

Truth better we find out he is a quitter now then during the season. He will make a great Division 2 (or whatever they call it these days) QB.

The Truth

I don't know people. I get the scepticism. Shannon ain't Jimmy or Howard or Butch or Dennis. If this went down on their watch, and it did...it would be a blip in the paper and MIGHT make the news for the night.

Especially if the Bozo tries to sue the school like Fortay.

But because he's 12-13 he gets these types of responses because somewhere deep down in most of you, you aren't sure if you may know more than he does about winning.

It's not a knock on you guys, just a perception check. If JJ had lost 2 QB's going into the 88 season would you all care like this?

When Butch lost KK and had a WR at back up did you all care like this?

Yeah, I remember a tad bit of worry but I didn't see ANYONE demanding Butch to explain anything.

Shannon is still in the midst of a major coulture overhaul. He's almost
there. Some of even admit he's still a year away from having this team truly compete. Well, he's doing it. He hasn't been perfect but he's got this team moving in the right direction. QB transfers or not.

O Lineman, this season is all up to you

Who was the backup QB on the 2000 squad? If you know the answer, then you are not worrying about qb depth this year.

I do know who our Linemen were that year, and our talent level now is not even close now...

Jacory, get out of bounds and git rid of the ball please.

I think this is a great time for the kids, Lake Brantley did all their practices during the summer at 5:30am. I think it maybe due to the heat but also helps develop discipline. Got to go to bed early to get up that early. Sunsations had to run at 6:30am during dance camp!

Every single one of you guys that say "quit" are lost or a best don't have a grasp on what is going on, and I mean every one of you,

the guys I love on here, the guys I tolerate, even the one I can't stand.lol!

No one quit, they decided to do what they do here, where they they had a better chance at personal success.

People that leave Google, to pursue something else don't let the team down.
grow up!

If you don't notice how many college kids are doing what they want, not what YOU want nowadays look around a little, this happens everywhere.

If I had a job I knew no matter what I was gonna be unhappy or miserable, you know what??
I'd say I can make everyone else feel great at my expense, or I can be true to myself and do what my mind tells me is right.

Great post Alex.

The Truth

Solar

You know that 99.9% of the time I am on that side of your assessment.

Not today.

Marve - the Bozo that he is - moved on. He saw the writing. Packed his bags.

Smith - yes...moving on. Good luck to him. Never was more than a scout team QB. Not sure where he thinks he's going, but wish him nothing best the best.

Cook - not so much. It's 13 days to FSU. He was the back-up. One play away. You don't waffle like this on a school.

Yes, he's essentially moving on to do, hopefully, better things. But Jesus, could have picked a worse time?

It IS a bit selfish. He was going to see the field. He's ONLY a RSfrosh.

I just think he quit on this team. Not cool.

The Truth

And so maybe this weekend he was 2 plays away.

Well, fight for your spot.

solarcane

Truth,
who said Cook decided today was the day he announced he was leaving?

Why do you think all of a sudden Highsmith is getting all the snaps?

Randy probably knew Cook was leaving at least two weeks ago and told him when to announce he is gone.

How the heck did he have his papers and release and everything the second he said hes leaving?

think about it for a minute

Yeah U missed the intent of my message. Here's what I meant:

Shannon now has one and only one option.

Ride Jacory for his coaching life.

Jacory fails or gets hurt, the Canes and Shannon are done.

That would be major case of the suck.

360Cane

Posted by: solarcane | August 25, 2009 at 07:56 PM

That's the problem solar. We want guys who feel they CAN beat the guy ahead of them.

If I were Cook, I would do my best to beat out Jacory. And in the end, if I didn't, I can walk away saying, "I tried my best." Not, "I quit because I'm not better than this guy." That's BS no mater how you flip-flop it.

It's not about "thinking" the guy ahead of you is better. It's the mentality of KNOWING you're better than the guy ahead of you. Hit the weights harder than him, do 7-on-7's in the off season more than he does, watch film, film and more film than he does. Stay a few nights over at Whip's to study the playbook with him more than he does. WHATEVER THE F*** IT TAKES!!! And if you still don't beat him out, "I tried my best!"

GO CANES!!!

86Cane

And no matter how U spin this, UM and Shannon take a PR hit on this one, no doubt about that.

Players that transfer never "graduate" which hurts your graduation RATE which hurts your APR score.

86Cane

Shannon knew about this awhile ago

Posted by: solarcane | August 25, 2009 at 08:24 PM

That's NOT what Cote said in his article.

WAR

Texascane

Cook realized how much better he would have to be than Jacory in order to play.

This was not a fair fight. Jacory has six or seven MNW teammates who will be starters over the next couple of years. The core of this team.

Just "being better" than Jacory, if it happened, a year or two from now would not be enough to make Cook the starter. RS would not gamble the chemistry of the whole team for a marginally better quarterback.

Randy's "we're going to recruit someone to take your job" mentality does not apply to Jacory. I'm not saying it is wrong, just very risky. As far as how he handled it, if he wanted to keep this from happening,, you fan the competition factor between Jacory and Cook until they come back to school...then announce a starter. Too late to transfer. It's not right but it's a business.

So when you say that Cook didn't want to compete, I think he just wanted a fair shot. Just remember, he committed to Miami in 2007, when Marve and Harris were both here...two Florida "Mr. Football" winners.

The Truth

No...not a while ago...

ELLIOTT

Well lets see I come home from work checking the space out hoping to read some positive feedback about where we are at heading two weeks into the season and look....Taylor and sorry as$ smith are transferring? WOW can I say lets get Ray Ray some snaps. I would rather have a fast, athletic qb who makes mistakes than a slow (Pirelli) non mobile qb who is going to make mistakes. Its sort of a gamble but I say our depth chart should look like this now

Harris
Highsmith
Ray Ray

Mr Troutman

THIS SITUATION WILL HELP UM GROW EVEN MORE. The line will block for Jacory like he was 1 month old BABY and keeping critter and vultures away (other teams) LOL IT SHOW TIME IN 2 WEEKS ANYWAY AND we'll be ready!!!!!

RandyCane

Who would want the highlight of their collegiate careers to be the day they quit on their team? I guess we know the answer to that question. I will be surprised if either one is successful at any level of play. A sign on the locker room wall at my high school said,"Quitters never win and WINNERS never QUIT! It was true in 1967 and it is true today! Truth and MM01 have it right.

solarcane

NO ONE is going to beat Jacory out, he is going to start as long as Shannn is coaching
Didn't you guys see that with other players here. Do have to bring up guys that were shyt ut Randy was loyal too?
If Shannon likes you you are gold.

If you would have kidded yourself for three seasons by working harder trying harder and all the other movie cliches, you would still get to throw the same 14 passes mopping up.
You would have proved to yourself and everybody on the team you are the most loyal hardest working guy on the bench, and you would be miserable.

But because you were afraid someone would say something about you you stuck it out cause mostly you were afraid to look bad.

It's all what you make it.

That's true. But what else was he supposed to do?

And Texas - I go at with you all the time and this is NOT one of those times - Cook wasn't as good as Jacory. He's wasn't as good and just didn't get a his fair shot.

He's was good enough yet.

And the one aspect the is being discounted here is leadership.

When have ANY of you questioned jacory's ability to lead this team??? He's got the goods. The moxy...whatever you want to call it.
He is the starter for MANY reasons. He earned every one of them.

mi@mic@ne

shannon did not just recruit one qb.He recruited a lot of ballers. He has brought back the cane way of very intense practices and guys who are proven winners. We got two really experienced coordinators. Plus Took his ball home Cook was from the interim phase. I really think things are on schedule. Cook would have let us down again. Better to leave and cut the losses.
