Your Miami Hurricanes are hard at work getting ready for the 2009 season. Practicing in the heat of the heart of the 305 they are sweating and struggling to get prepared for the FSU Seminoles on Labor Day.
Here is what we hear from the practice field:
- If Mike James (pictured here with 86Cane and OcalaCane) doesn't play early and often like we think he will, Lamar "The Truth" Miller may just in fact be next great thing. Contrary to current Canespace blogger The Truth's opinion, the Miami Killian product may earn his moniker and may just be the breakaway player the Canes have been seeking since Portis, McGahee and Gore left campus.
- Jimmy Graham is getting some serious consideration at TE. The former UM basketball player turned football warrior continues to make an impression on both coaches and players. Word out at Greentree Field is that new Canes OC Mark Whipple likes what he sees and may even have some Miracle Whip specially designed for The Liger.
- Tall, long and lanky Tommy Streeter is also rumored to be turning some heads in Coral Gables. The speedmonger is going deep and deeper against the Canes secondary on a daily basis. He could be a name to watch as a LOF this year or next.
- The D-line is also making some noise as well early on in Fall practice. According to several reports they are getting pressure on the QB and causing pain to various RBs during practices. This is a key area for the Canes if they are to be successful in 2009. Watch out for true Freshman DE Oliver Vernon coming off the edge in 2009. Word out there is he is unstoppable!
- We have not heard any bad news about the O-line yet so far so all indications are positive. When they are locked up against the Noles on Labor Day we will know for sure, but not until then. Keep your fingers crossed on this one.
- Randy "The Boss" Shannon appears to be in quite the relaxed mood these days. Word on the street is that he even smiles once in a while and is openly humourous on radio interviews these days. Could he be sensing that something is brewing in Coral Gables? Time will tell...
Pic #18...Spence has definitely gained a litte weight.

Funny in pic #24, Richard Gordon looks like and in-shape Rick Ross.
HAHAHAHA!

I dunno if the camera's adding ten pounds or somethin', but Pimp and AJ are looking a little thick.
Posted by: dj moonbat | August 13, 2009 at 03:41 PM
Bg, You're right he does have a slight resemblence to Rick Ross. I thought Vilma went into the league at 230 lb (or at least that is what he is listed at now) that's exactly why I picked that number. Thanks for clarifying.

He's another load of a back and powerful throwback-type of fullback. The future Cane already has rushed for more than 2,000 yards in his high school career, and most of that production has come after contact.

The speculation throughout the summer and the fall has been that Collier has put on too much weight and has lost a step and has fallen behind the other receivers.
Truth/Aqua know anything about this?
Posted by: canefan3 | August 13, 2009 at 05:26 PM
I have a question for someone with photoshop abilities.
Son Rick had a 2004 F-150 extended cab Lariat (white) which had Cane tags and stickers and after the accident his 11 year old brother Justin inherited it. Justin is Cane crazy ( I can relate) and he wants to paint that thing green with orange trim and we ( Rick Sr. and I )were trying to figure out what it would look like before springing a couple grand to have it coated.
Would it look better with orange and green pin stripes on that white?
I know any self respecting Cane fan has to have considered this at least once in their lifetime, I'm a black powerstroke guy myself.
All suggestions would be appreciated.
Solar?
Go Canes!!!!!!!!
Ricky's Mama says thanks in advance!!

Interesting post from the board at Rivals...
Of the LBs besides Spence and Mccarthy....Cookie is "the most impressive" right now according to one staff member.."He can cover anyone he has to".....He said his speed is a major advantage. I look for him and Sharpton to start out splitting time and by midseason he will take over full time...
Posted by: bg1906 | August 13, 2009 at 02:52 PM
Funny post from Rivals.
Biggest addtion to this years defense.....
is the subtraction of Glen Cook and Romeo Davis.
Thank goodness these dudes are gone.
LMAO!

So who's at the Mike??? I thought Sharpton would start there with AB behind him??
Buchanon will probably take someone's spot, it's just a question of whose.
AB will catch up to speed though. I just hope he doesn't get down on himself. I doutb the players and coaches will let him. Futch looks ready for war in one of those shots.

G&T they deserve a beatdown just for taking those fa**ot-azz pictures. What kind of corn-ball 'ish is that?? lol
Someone needs to send that link to someone at CG so the team can see this candy-cane shat.

Posted by: SlingBlade | August 13, 2009 at 06:23 PM
BG, thanks for the link to those pics. Everyone's looks good, big and ready, even Figs. Amazing what competition can do.
Are you sure that last shot was Gordon?? I thought his torso was bigger than that dude's. If it was Gordon, he looks like he's 50 years old with that beard. haha
Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | August 13, 2009 at 06:40 PM
lol, Sling.
Kendar was wierd, even before he got hurt. His leadership skills seemed a lot closer to Ryan Clement's than Charlie Ward.
Posted by: j.w. | August 13, 2009 at 06:41 PM
Slingblade, haha, good one.
AJ and Collier look bigger slightly but I want to see more explosion from AJ and more and better of what Collier did last year, more burst and explosion, we know he has moves.

Posted by: shwarma | August 13, 2009 at 03:48 PM
He has always looked that way to me in person. He's a slot receiver, all he needs is placement and positioning in the zone for the first down and some YAC just like Solar has said 100 times here. No worries mate!
Skretter, Byrd and TBen got the outside speed to thrill!
Posted by: SOUP | August 13, 2009 at 07:25 PM
34...did not slam them but got enough to get by. Lots of work, had to go to four spots to get my limit of 6. LOT of shorts out there in the popular spots, gotta go off the beaten path to find the BIG boys. It took most of the day but we did, and we did! Two big daddy's and four keepers.
Hey, Mrs. 86, pass the butter and lemon...
Posted by: SOUP | August 13, 2009 at 07:32 PM
Nice. I work near Bear Cut (between Virginia Key and Key Biscayne)and went snorkling the other day in the cut. I got my limit, but it was hard work. Usually it is pretty good, but a lobster boat decided to drop his pots there this year. Oh well, at least I have a few, but it is not going to be a stellar season.

Good soup, tell shandel to knock on wood before we use the wood to knock on him!
The good thing about having depth though is now, we can practice a whole lot harder, depth allows for us tobe able to start practicing harder than the actual game/s. We only have a few positions where we have to be cautious, other than that, here comes the pain baby here comes the pain.
Alot of people have noticed the changes in the culture of the team, what i like though is, the players don't have nobody on the team that's going to baby them anymore, they're making sure they understand that they're being raised to be men. So no under-cutting/t,mossin coaches. Nowhere to ruunnnn, Nowhere to hidddeee, only place to run is on the field and make plays.
I'm a lil uneasy about tommie robinson saying these runningbacks are good, don't tell them that, make them work harder, tell em they got a long ways to go.
mcgriff and lovett will go hand and hand seems like, as of right now, mcgriff seems to be proving his worth, if we're 7th in the nationa agaisnt the pass this year, it'll be because it's official.

this reply sounds just like Calvin would do it lol!!
The Hurricanes D ranked last in ACC play against the run in '08. Who are the players who need to step up to improve the run defense?
"I'll wager my entire next year's salary that, barring injury, this fall you will see Marcus Forston and Allen Bailey do that thing where they strike down with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to cutback and find holes to slip through. And you will know our name is the U when they lay their vengeance upon thee"
