Huge match up this Thursday as #20 Miami hosts #14 Georgia Tech (GT). GT has beaten the Hurricanes 4 straight years and is looking to make it 5. In fact no other team has dominated Miami more in the last 25 years than GT has.
In 2008 the Hurricanes allowed 472 rushing yards against GT, the second-highest total in school history. According to ESPN "Miami was so embarrassed by its performance that it specifically asked ACC officials to play Georgia Tech in a Thursday night game this season." Its this embarrassment that fuels these Canes to take action on the field Thursday night.
Let's take a deeper look at this match-up:
Georgia Tech's offense is lead by Jr. QB Josh Nesbitt. While he may be labeled as a QB, he is far from a good passer. On the year he is 9 of 25 passing for 224 yards 1 TD and 2 INT's. His 36% completion percentage places him dead last in the country.GT's threat is on the ground and this is where the Hurricanes will put 8 in the box all game to shut down GT's triple option attack.
Georgia Tech's triple option attack is one of the top 5 rushing attacks in college football. HB Jonathan Dwyer is a Heisman Trophy candidate and is averaging 6.72 yards per carry. QB Josh Nesbitt is leading the Yellow Jackets in rushing this year with 184 yards on the year averaging 5.8 ypc. But the biggest surprise for the Yellow Jackets has been the rushing by "A" Back Anthony Allen, who torched Clemson last week with 5 rushes for 127 yards and 1 TD. The Louisville transfer has given the Yellow Jackets a good third option on the ground.
Surprisingly this high powered ground game has only seen the end-zone 4 times in two games. A far lower number than expected. Additionally, in the Yellow Jackets first two games they have reached the Red Zone 8 times and have only managed to get into the End Zone 2 times while settling for 4 Field Goals.
Defensively, Miami is looking to improve its rushing defense that was 12th in the ACC last year. The Hurricanes did a good job of stopping the run against FSU last week with a depleted defense. Eric Moncur is looking for his first action of the year at DE after missing last week with injury. Defensive back Ryan Hill returns from injury to help in the backfield. Safety Randy Phillips looks to be back in healthy form laying big hits and ball hawking passes over the middle.
CB Brandon Harris is coming off career high 9 tackle performance and is looking to continue his progression as a shut down corner. Look for Harris to manned up on Yellow Jackets receiver Demaryius Thomas, who many claim to be one of the best in the Conference. Harris will be left on an island with Thomas with little help as the Safety's will be used to help shutdown the run. The Yellow Jackets on the other hand match-up fairly well with the Hurricanes defensively.
The Hurricanes are coming off their biggest offensive performance in many years. QB Jacory Harris has Ice in his veins and throws an incredibly accurate and catch-able ball. RB Graig Cooper has electrified a kick off return team that was 12th in the ACC last year averaging just over 19 ypc. Cooper is averaging over 35 yards a return. Look for the Yellow jackets to kick the ball away from Cooper often. In addition to his special teams performance Cooper is in excellent shape and appears prepared to have a monster season.
The GT defensive line anchored by all-ACC DE Derrick Morgan. Morgan is the cornerstone of this defense leading the team with 15 tackles, 5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Look for Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple to constantly bring a double team on Morgan out of the backfield. Safety Morgan Burnett is perhaps the best safety in the Conference coming off a monster year last year with 93 tackles, 7 int and 8 passes defended.
Miami will look to establish the run to control the clock and set up the play action pass. But the Whiplash offense caught FSU off guard by attacking through the air and is likely to continue to do so in this game. The Yellow Jackets have given up 454 yards in the air against a 1-AA program and Clemson. While they have very solid safetys their CBs are average at best and will be exploited.
The Hurricanes should score regularly, with the Yellow Jackets defense allowing close to a 40% 3rd down conversion rate. Additionally, Miami has continued its near perfect Red Zone offense from last year where we finished as the 3rd best Red Zone offense in the Country.
With the clear improvement in the return game, Lou Groza award finalist Kicker Matt Bosher handling field goals, the tremendous upgrade at Offensive Coordinator and a near completely healthy defense look for the Hurricanes to avenge the beat down inflicted on them last year.
It says here that the Hurricanes will be victorious on Thursday night in front of the entire nation and solidify its return to relevance in College Football.

I can't wait to see what part of the offense they unleash tomorrow night!

I know GTs option isn't exactly the same as the option that Syracuse ran in Big East play, by Miami found a way to stop that offense with their speed and tackling, and with the athletes we have now, I'm confident we'll be able to stop it tomorrow night as well.

good article Josh
one thing
GT is averaging 43 yds a punt return
Miami is averaging 2.3 yds a punt return.
Hard to give Miami the edge there, but this game could turn those stats around too

Very good article as always on the Space
Im looking forward to seeing what Whipple has added for this week
Also what did Lovett do to stop this Tech running game and how nasty and mean does this D get after what happened last year
Posted by: Sebastian | September 16, 2009 at 08:02 PM
I was looking at a stat that said since 2001 we are 65-8 when we score 20+ points and 45-1 when we hit the 30+ mark
It was only 1 game but the Whipple effect sure looks very promising .

I think we get Mccartney and Chris Dunkley, I know people say the Dunkley is a Gator silent but IMO he wants to be a cane, he will be at the Georgia Tech game tomorrow and it seems like he is at the miami practices all the time. I am more worried about the TE position for next year. We have one TE next year, Billy Sanders, and who knows if he will be good enough to get snaps.
Going back to recruting, Clinton Hurt said that we have 5 silents.
I think we end up with:
Clements
Payne
Linder
Mccarney
Dunkley
Willis Wright(best prospect in dade IMO)
Lemonier or Perry
2 TE or 1 TE and 1 OL

Mauro, if we get Dunkley and Dunbar/MCcartney, that will be one helluva WR class and a true indicator of who's winning the battles.
If what you say is true about him coming to U practices and being at the GT game, he must have seen or heard about what Whipple and Jacory are doing for the WR position.
If we whoop GT, score 40 and our WRs shine, it's over babay!! haha
Not only recruits but the rest of CFB will begin holding their breath.

Josh, nice piece. I didn't know we requested a Thursday night game. That's the Cane way.
Having a week to prepare for GT is really the key to this game. Film time and practice field time gives you more and more looks and familiarity with them so that the learning curve shrinks.
Clemson playing them tough and in many ways shutting that option down is also key.
Plus, you know Lovett feels better about this game than the FSU game and you know he's been thinking about it for a while.
Having VT and Moncur back is huge as well.
Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | September 16, 2009 at 08:24 PM
Calvin, I didn't see Cook on the sidelines but he's definitely the LAST former Cane I'd want to see giving advice.
The undercover matchup to me is how our DEs try to outshine Morgan, who's getting all the hype. You know Vernon thinks he's the best, Robinson too, and Wesley is playing hard, especially against the run, and I'm sure Moncur isn't too happy with all this Morgan hype, so you know they're ready. I bet Ojomo's in their ears as well. And of course Hurtt is in their brains, not to mention some alums like Stubbs and Lang and Krein. haha

From last blog.
Joe,
Good Post. I was about to say the samething about Ego Ferguson, the kid is already 270 lbs, he will be a defensive tackle.

Dunkley is not coming here. Ego may develop into a tackle but he may chose a 3-4 type team so he can be a 3-4 DE. Most of your silent guesses I disagree with. 1 I agree with and 1 is 50/50. The others are not silents.

Also from last blog.
I think we have an outside chance at Dunkley. I think if the offense continues to put up points are chances will get better. I love Dunkley he is so smooth his running style reminds me of Hester and Debose but probably has better hands than both of those guys.
CB,S and TE are the only 3 spots in this class I'm worried about. We will be fine at WR, RB, QB, LB, and O-line.
but, Walford, Buxton, don't really do anything for me. I like Trail as a TE and some are saying he is a silent. Payne and Davis seem like they are locks. And I think Ricardo Allen will eventually get an offer. Greg Dent is a grades problem and is supposedly all FSU. Also don't count out Ogltree either he may be one of those guys who defects really late if we do well.
The CB projections don't get me super excited but it will be a lot better than what we have had. I guess Its just because there really isn't a Brandon Harris, Janoris Jenkins, Patrick Johnson type in this class. That 08 class was sick.
If this team really blows up and generates buzz and we start getting attention from the palm beach elite this class could be amazing.
Posted by: joecane | September 16, 2009 at 07:05 PM
Trail is NOT a silent and like you I hope Allen gets an offer.

Cav,
If Whipple keeps doing his thing, we'll have no problem getting the best recruits to play for our offense. I'm just worried about Lane Kiffin getting all the recruits to play in his father's defense. I mean, if I was a big time linebacker (Jeff Luc) or defensive tackle, I would want to play for Monte kiffin as well.

Bg, while everyone is entitled to their opinion, clearly these guys are not informed who they are disagreeing with. I mean when it comes to recruiting, you are THE TRUTH
Also I agree that from those lists above only 3 or so will end up here. And for the comment about CB's would you agree that while this class does not necessarily have as much top end talent at CB its a close with a strong second tier level of talent?
Posted by: shwarma | September 16, 2009 at 08:45 PM
I don't think it's hype when it comes to Morgan. That guy's a beast. I'm sure Whipple has game planned our whole offense around knowing where #91 is on every down.
Lets GO Canes............Lets GO Canes

I'm no different than anyone else and I could be wrong. But like Truth, I try to temper expectations. My sources are just like other peoples sources. But I am a HOG. I read and re-read and dissect everything when a recruit is interviewed. I even read what they say to OTHER sites too and NOT just Miami sites. They are entitled to their opinions, but I just try to keep them grounded.
As far as CBs. It is still very early. Remember this time in 2008, Jacory and Spence were only 3 star recruits. Lets see how these kids perform in their senior years.
Walford is a project, but I think the staff likes his athleticism. He's a legit D-1 Basketball prospect too. In terms of Buxton, remember this...he play at Pahokee. Pahokee is a NATIONALLY known and respected program and Buxton is a Captain on their team. So though he may not seem like a top guy now, with time and development he could turn out very good. He has good genes as James Jackson is his cousin.

I feel good about the Canes. Odds makers say GT by 5, Phil Steele says Canes by 11 and I say Canes by 20+. If the Canes don't turn the ball over, I am confident they will score more than 40 pts.
I could also tell that the Canes have more talent and experience on D this year when I watched the spring scrimages/practices (in person) and when I watched the FSU game (on TV).
I noticed the Canes shut down the FSU option when Fisher-Ponder ran it. The only big running plays came on two QB draws out of the pistol formation with the halfback going through the hole behind the LG and blocking down the safety. Ponder scored on one play and Shields caught Ponder on another long run. The other long run I recall was late in the game by Ty Jones (I believe).
What was encouraging is the Canes limited the big runs and limited FSU to 110 yds rushing. The canes also shut down the FSU option this year, which is something that they struggeled with last year. The Canes did such a good job of it, that FSU abandoned it entirely after a few unsucessful attempts.
I think GT will use trickery to try to generate offense. GT will add a few wrinkles on offense like reverses, fake reverses or a QB draw in order to confuse the Canes and try to counter the Canes preparation and superior athleticsm. GT will probably also have a fake punt and/or FG.
I would be surprised if the Canes don't win this game big and continue their ascent up the polls and eventually into the BCS discussion.

I wouldn't bag on Cook too much if I was U.
Just because he couldn't physically do things doesn't mean he didn't KNOW what to do.
A lot of actual UM players and coaches will vouche for his knowledge. That's a fact.
I don't mind him telling other players what he knows.

BG,
We have 17 oral commitments right now, according to Hurtt we have 5 silents and 2 or 3 more spots, that will give us room for 8 more commitments. The names is hard to say, we still have 5 months till signing day and anything can happen. Right now IMO those are the kids that will make those 8 spots. however, I am more interested to see the names that you will put in those final 7 or 8 spots.
Some people mention Hurns as being a silent, is miami going to take him after have season ending surgery? to much of a risk IMO.
Posted by: Mauro | September 16, 2009 at 09:15 PM
Ya the CB class this year in florida is probably deeper than 08 but there really aren't a whole lot of studs. And of the studs we really aren't in the running for the likes of Joyner and Riggs.
The trail thing was just speculation because he was seen on campus. Honestly I could leave or take Trail I wouldn't want him as a DE and only as a TE but, I think there are better TE prospects out there. If Ray Ray doesn't work out at safety maybe they move him to Te?

I don't like discussing silents because they are silent for a reason. So I won't comment on what I think will happen until we get close to signing day.
But I will give you a wish list...
Linder
McCartney
Clements
Ferguson
Allen

Hurns

Just a few I'd like to see us nab. Some I think we will, some I think we won't.

Spotlight game: No. 14 Ga. Tech at No. 20 Miami
Place: Miami
Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
The line: Miami by 4 1/2
Three Reasons Georgia Tech Will Win
1. The offense. As long as Paul Johnson coaches, his teams will run some form of an option offense. And there's no evidence that the scheme has become any easier to stop. The Yellow Jackets' run attack is thriving again in 2009 thanks to a bevy of backs that seem great fits for the offense. Jonathan Dwyer remains a candidate for ACC Player of the Year, and Anthony Allen, a Louisville transfer, has averaged better than 18 yards per carry in two games. Look for a heavy dose of dives and pitches Thursday in South Florida.
2. Derrick Morgan. Georgia Tech's defensive end gets points off the bat for his sense of humor—he wore a bow tie in the photo taken for the Yellow Jackets' Web site. But the guy gets it done on the field as well. He's emerging as one of the nation's top defensive ends. Miami dominated Florida State with the pass last week, and QB Jacory Harris proved both efficient and effective down the field. Morgan's pass rush could disrupt the Canes and help GT grab a road win.
3. Special teams. Heading into the Clemson game, the kicking game seemed a weakness for Tech. All that changed in the first half last Thursday, when the Jackets returned a pooch punt for a touchdown and a turned a fake field goal into a touchdown. This game, like most in the ACC, figures to be close deep into the second half. And a game-changer on special teams could be the difference once again.
Three Reasons Miami Will Win
1. Big plays. Perhaps no quarterback played better football in Week 1 than Miami's Jacory Harris, who overcame a late shoulder injury to lead a Canes comeback. He finished with 386 passing yards and three touchdowns (two throws, one rush). But most remarkable about his performance were the plays downfield. UM hit eight pass plays to six different receivers that covered at least 20 yards. The long gainers cancelled the Canes' impotent run game and allowed for the late rally. "We need to limit the big plays," Tech coach Paul Johnson said. "We have to keep guys in front."
2. Revenge. These squads met on a November Thursday in Atlanta last year, and it ranked as the Hurricanes' worst day of the season. Tech rushed for 472 yards on 56 carries as it rolled to a 31-point fourth-quarter lead and eventual 41-23 victory. The Canes, with a lineup full of freshmen and sophomore, had no answers for the Yellow Jackets' attack. They hope things will change this year, with more experienced players and new defensive coordinator John Lovett imported from North Carolina. "The guys feel embarrassed about the way they performed," UM coach Randy Shannon said. "That can be a little bit of a motivating factor."

.3. Josh Nesbitt. Tech's quarterback ranks among the best runners at his position in America. But passing remained a weakness, especially last week against Clemson. Two third-down completions late boosted his numbers, but he finished with three completions against two interceptions. If Miami can force the Jackets into passing situations, Nesbitt's struggles could become an advantage for the Canes

Good peace Josh. I still sick with my pick. CANES 31 and GT 28...Love the Canes right now they are starting to show some confidence. Not willing to say there back because the whole season needs to play out. We are not back because our depth is not there at every position. Maybe next year or the year after. Go Canes...

BG,
I guess we can conclude that you have the following:
Ferguson
Allen
Hurns
Beachum
Williams
Anderson
and one is 50/50 out of (Linder,McCartney,Clements,Payne,Wright)since those were already on the list that you were in disagreement with.
That's about right 7. That could very well be the final 7 spots, however, I will be very disapointed.

Looking at the GT stats
These are basically the guys that make all the tackles
91 Morgan 11 solo, 6.5 tackles for loss including 5 sacks already
22, Taylor 5 solo 9 assists
51 Jefferson 2 solo 11 assists
37 Tarrant punt returner extrodinaire has 7 solo 4 assists
block those guys and it gets easier

Truth was hanging out with me for a couple of days on his way to some unknown destination.
I asked no questions, he told no lies.

Ah man, ha. I actually laughed out loud a little when reading this, just b/c of the human factor of how nervous we all get about a game that we have no control over.
Reminds me of when we were all sitting here on Canespace, on Decemeber 17th (my birthday) a couple of years ago .. waiting for Arthur Brown to announce where he'd be going to school. I forgot exactly who the Canespacer was, but he threw out a line that said:
"Anyone else nervous and have butterflys in their stomach? .. ok, me neither"
Ha. That's awesome. We're all sitting around our computers, trying to tell each other where to watch this press conference on some backwoods news channel in Kansas, all hyped up with nervous energy and having the outcome of our day depend on what hat Arthur Brown was going to put on. As soon as he pulled out the "U" hat and put it on, everything was right in the world - nothing could be wrong

Shwarma - I think maybe he is referring to Latwan Anderson the safety

When our boys scratch and claw their way to a "W" tomorrow night, everything will be right in the world again as well

BG, why is Dunkley so enamored with FU? Just curious to see what you've heard.

Windy, great point. I'm sure PJ will try to use everything he has, especially when we shut down plans A and B.

Sad to read today that 3 former canes no longer have a spot on an NFL roster:
Leon Williams - waived by Browns
Buck Ortega - waived by Saints
Kareem Brown - released by Giants
I hope they're able to land a job somewhere else!
