Calvin,

I think they aspire to be as great, if not better, than the players they admire. Kevin is VERY IMPRESSIVE, and Devont'a is also. They have a bar and level of playing to achieve.

They both said, "when it's our turn, we're gonna bring the trophy back home".

I love it!!

pb(CSROH10)

But more than half the team are underclassmen, so it comes with the territory. Bottom line is we're way ahead of schedule.

Amen to that Cav. Once McGee replaces Shields our starting defensive backfield will be true freshman, true freshman, redshirt freshman and true sophomore.

The incredible part is all four of them have a sick amount of talent. Imagine when they've been together three years.

New Commit - LB Travis Williams from VA

bg1906

Good job fellers!

alf

IN SUMMARY | WHAT MAKES Travis Williams GREAT

This young talent is versatile. He has the size, speed and ability to play wide receiver, outside linebacker, defensive end and strong safety.

Titans coach Hank Sawyer said, “If I was a college coach, I would put him as close to the line of scrimmage as possible because he’ll make people run away from him.”

Last season he was All-Eastern District at defensive end and wide receiver. One recruiting site ranks him as the No. 7 recruit in the state and the No. 15 outside linebacker in the country.

He had 78 tackles, 14 sacks and 12 quarterback hurries. As a receiver, his size, strength and hands make him nearly unstoppable. Put him at linebacker, and there’s no one who can block him one on one.

He also can be a shutdown defensive back with incredible closing speed. He can easily add another 20 to 30 pounds and without losing speed or quickness.

Speaking of speed, Williams ran 4.38 in the 40. He also benched 325 and lifted 185 pounds almost 20 times.

Sawyer said he likes Williams because “he makes plays and makes things happen.” So far Williams has more than 20 offers, including from Tennessee, LSU, Miami, Alabama, Penn State, Virginia, Virginia State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, West Virginia and Syracuse.

Sawyer said Williams is not going to rush into making a decision.

ACC Player Of The Week Special Teams

SPECIALIST - Matt Bosher, Miami, K/P, Jr., 6-5, 205, Jupiter, Fla. (Jupiter)

Miami junior kicker/punter Matt Bosher converted all three of his point-after-touchdown attempts and connected on two field goals in the Hurricanes' 27-7 win against UCF. Bosher had a season-long 46-yard field goal in the third quarter that extended Miami's lead to 20-7. He also extended his streak to 62 straight PATs. Additionally, he punted four times and averaged 33.2 yards per punt, while three of his kicks were downed inside UCF's 20-yard line.

Hurriphin.....the U.

I've seen the Williams kid play once.

Lake Taylor was playing Granby (Norfolk VA) and I work with a guy sho's son played for LT HS.

He certainly fits the mold of the UM sideline to sideline defender, but he is painfully thin, and when I saw him out there, he was playing like a finesse saftey, rather than a LB.

I hope being around those other high octane LB's we've got, makes him step up his physical.

Congrats to you, and buckle em' up kid!

I'll see what I can do. Orange is orange vodka, green is rum. It's a matter of taste. If I put too much alcohol in them, they don't set right . . . um, not that I learned this lesson the hard way.

JCane

We were discussing Travis Williams a few weeks ago and his likelihood of ending up a Cane. BG pretty much said he had no doubt about it, so good call from his end. Nice story per Rivals about Williams mostly was recruiting the U since he wanted to go there, and he has agreed to not take any other visits at Shannon's request. It looks like setting up trust is becoming key (ie you don't date anyone else and we won't either!).

Interestingly, a RB named Joe Randle just verbaled to Okie State who apparently had UM among his offers. Anyone think this was the case, or at least actively the case? These guys can say anything they want, of course.

The picture for the next class continues to get more clear.

Hurriphin

Tommorrow is crazy hair day at the kid's school.

$25 to get a "U" cut into my son's head.

No, I use sugar free jello. Blame the stadium cake, game day brownies, game day cupcakes, and orange and green M&M game day cookies.

Does this mean we are done with LBs for this class? I am sure if Jones or Shirley wanted to jump on board, Randy might let them.

I still want the Canes to check out that CB Shaw from Cali.

Okay, it's my bed time. Gym early in the morning!

Big Big week, getting back into ACC play and the ACC title race starting back up. Everyone knows on this blog that this is going to be a tough game and one we have to be ready for mentally. One of the great things about these past two games is we played FAMU a lower tier team that we could handle fairly well on an off day and then we play UCF a team thats D1 and a pretty tough football team. Now in week 3 we have an ACC foe that if we dont show up for we can be in the same boat as last year, so close, yet so far. The great thing about last year and this year vs VT is they know if they dont come out with that dominate mentality they'll be walking around LS stadium with the sad face after the game. They've gotta come out wanting kill the man across from them and willing to die for the man next 'em. With that mentality right there there's no way they lose. Every week is a big week especially from a national championship stand point and you already know RS all about getting that ring. Big week canes step up to the challenge and dominate dont let Clemson even think they belong on the field with you. They gonna come in there and give you their best shot from the get go so be ready for a war b/c thats what you're gonna get and dont expect anything less. Oh and let em know....IF THEY WANT SOME, COME GET SOME. RIDE OUT BABY. GO CANES!!!!!!!!

miamimike01

Just so U all know...

Kevin is a star. He will LOCK DOWN MLB for at least 3 years. He's the next great MLB @UM.

I'm SO excited him, U don't understand. But, U do, b/c it's a Cane's Thing. This guys is SPECIAL!!

Devont'a has it, too. WE GOT SPECIAL GUYS HERE!!

BOTH are gonna be wearing rings, before it's all done...

Exactly. When you step back and look at how well these players have gelled and the coaches with them, it's really very impressive for just Year 3 of the Shannon Era and Year 1 of Whipple and Lovett, who are the 2nd and 3rd at their position.

These kids, esp. the Cokerites, deserve a lot of credit for manning up and accepting the change and the challenge.

The coaches get a little praise as well, although I think we've just scratched the surface of what they can really do.

Where's all of our talk about Haith's new hoops recruit? Next you'll are going to tell me that the U is mostly a football school... :)

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Travis is definitely gifted, no doubt. He could play about four different positions.

He looks like a OLB-SS though because he has plenty of room to grow.

Welcome home. And look at Team Shannon snatching ballers from Beamer's backyard. haha

I guess the rain didn't do too much damage after all.

With the start of the 2009-10 season just about a month away, the University of Miami men’s basketball team officially begins team practice on Friday, Oct. 16, at the BankUnited Center.

In addition, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will hold their second annual Hurricanes Hoopfest at the BankUnited Center from 7-9 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 21. During the event, fans will be able to watch the men scrimmage and the women practice for 30 minutes apiece, interact with the student-athletes during an autograph session and pick their seats for the upcoming season.

Sixth-year head coach Frank Haith, who spent the beginning of the summer serving as an assistant coach with the USA World University Games men’s basketball team, returns to the helm for Miami. The Hurricanes, who have advanced to the postseason in four of the last five seasons and seven times since 2000, return a pair of starters and seven letterwinners, including three players that started 16 or more games last season.

Despite the loss of two-time All-ACC First Team selection Jack McClinton to graduation, the Hurricanes welcome back two of the team’s top-three scorers in Dwayne Collins and James Dews, two of the team’s top-three three-point shooters in Adrian Thomas and Dews, and the squad’s leader in steals and rebounds in Collins, as well as a recruiting class ranked among the Top 25 by both ESPN and Scout.

86Cane

Miami’s six newcomers in 2009-10 include Malcolm Grant and Reggie Johnson, who both redshirted last season, in addition to UM’s heralded recruiting class of Antoine Allen and ESPNU 100 picks Durand Scott, Garrius Adams and Donnavan Kirk. The 2009 class is Haith’s second Top 25 recruiting class in five years. In addition, Scott’s signing marked the second-straight season Haith has secured a five-star player rated among Scout’s top-25 overall recruits. He was ranked fifth in the nation among shooting guards by Scout, eighth by Rivals and 11th by ESPN, and also ranked among the top-25 overall players by Scout.

The Hurricanes will host an exhibition games at home versus Florida Southern on Mon., Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m., before opening the regular season at home versus North Carolina Central on Sat., Nov. 14, at 4 p.m.

The University of Miami baseball team officially opened fall practice Thursday afternoon, holding a nine-inning intrasquad scrimmage at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes - coming off an NCAA record 37th straight trip to NCAA Regionals in 2009 - enter the fall with a 35-man roster consisting of 21 returning players and 14 newcomers.

"We are excited," head coach Jim Morris said prior to the start of practice. "We have some holes to fill from the number of players we've lost the last few years from our 2008 World Series team but I think we have a talented group heading into the fall."

After stretching and working through some individual drills, the team spent the rest of the afternoon scrimmaging under clear skies and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80's.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us but we have a lot of good, young players," Morris said. "We have proven that we can go to Omaha with young players or old players so our goals are very high for this club."

The `Canes return 17 letterwinners from last year's 38-22 team, including 2009 All-ACC performers Chris Hernandez, Yasmani Grandal and Scott Lawson. In addition, two-time All-ACC performer Eric Erickson returns after missing the 2009 season rehabilitating from an injury.

Its great to be a Miami Hurricane...

We all new if this season shaped up the way we thought, dare I say hoped, boldly say some "expected"; that the kids that "Team Shannon" wanted would come.

It is funny that the SOFLA ballers, are the ones that are afraid of the competition and depth on our squad.

Sure there are some kids I would have wanted, but I love Nelson, McDermott, Feliciano, and these kids much better because they are coming in with the understanding that they MUST COMPETE. They will not be handed a spot, they will not be handed a blue duffel bag full of cash, and their behavior will not be negligent. This in turn will not only create men out of them, but leaders and nothing could be better for this growing and athletically gifted team.

miamimike01

solar,

If there ever was a recruit I put my finger on, it's Nelson. He has ALL the intangibles. Seeing him on the sideline, after two games, this kid is real. He's the next emotional leader; Ed, Ray; trust me.
