Just in case you didn't hear Randy on Joe Rose this morning -

Response to: I was wondering if anyone knows definitively who called the timeout. A spike there would have given us two plays to get a first down and still left the middle of the field open, thus allowing Jacory to throw someting in the ten to fifteen yard range. Does anyone know? I won't criticize Shannon for the timeout, if he called it, there are two theories on it, but I am curious. Posted by: SJMPARMAN

Man we are running out of players on defense.

Esteban

so the back up LBs are Brown and Robinson this week? Only two? Am I forgetting anyone?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

So Cav. the U kept getting burned on 3rd and long over and over and over but no pressure on the qtback, guess that would not have helped?

DLU, I'm NOT DISAGREEING WITH YOU. lol

I'm only trying to understand Lovett's logic for NOT blitzing.

We don't have experience but we do have pretty good speed, right?

We blitzed and covered very well against UCF, right?

Clemson had a fresh QB, right?

We stopped the run, right?

So why not bring some pressure and reduce the amount of exposure our young DBs have to face??

If he was so worried about Spiller and Ford, I'd rather give the QB less time to make a decision or who to hit.

Ultimately, we'll never know why unless Lovett says something himself.

But apparently, when Lovett was at Clemson and AUB, he blitzed a lot. Go figure.

Given the play of said defense, apparently we didnt have that many to start...

I kinda take blame for this loss though. I sat on a different side of the shark (153) (and i HATE the side i sat on, behind the recrutis) than i normally do (101-102). Dumb decision on my part, right?

If you didnt get my sarcasm, there is no one person to blame for that catastrophe called a game this past saturday. Both sides played half-heartedly and neither the coaches nor the players were perfect. In the beginning of the season, i thought VT and clemPson (no im not just saying that now) would be the hardest tests to date, VT because of bud foster and clemPson because of their speed. You cannot rely on your athletic skills to beat teams like that. The team depth is of concern, yes. The playcalling is suspect, sure. But i dunno this team hasnt gelled the way i would have expected them to by this point, from FAMU on there have been consistent breakdowns and gaffes that real cohesive teams just do not have.

Oh and not having pat hill is a much bigger problem than anyone wants to admit. As good as our backs are as playmakers, they dont block particularly well. I miss that guy, badly.

 DATcane

did Randy jus say Ray Ray will play linebacker?

reggaebob

isnt cj holton technically a backup LB also? They 'moved him to safety' at one point but i think that was just rhetoric to hide his inability to play linebacker as well as they had hoped...

worst comes to worst we go all high school and run a base nickel with ray ray or a 5-2-4 with curtis porter. regardless, these fellas gonna grow up real fast.

Esteban

DAT, would make sense. i ain't listening tho.

Esteban

reggae, yeah i forgot about Holton.

Solar, haha, pre-season I didn't see a reason why we wouldn't roll through the ACC. By the 4th game, even, I thought we'd worked out the kinks for the most part. The D had some holes but after the way they bottled up UCF and blitzed I thought we were turning the corner......THEN THIS. lol

At this point, I think Shannon and Lovett need to sit down and really think about the defensive philosophy going forward. Our pass rushing hasn't developed, basically because we're banged up and have freshmen and sophomores trying to do MOST of the heavy-lifting, ONCE AGAIN.

So what do we do? Sit and play it safer or apply regular pressure from different angles and let the kids play aggressively?

Without a Spiller or Ford the rest of the way, it would be kind of silly NOT to blitz given our lack of front four pressure.

The irony of it all is that Shannon talks about being so aggressive but he generally plays his defense very conservatively.

He's more aggressive on offense than defense.

Whatever the case, Shannon needs to let Lovett be aggressive and apply pressure but no defense can defense WRs when a QB has all day to throw. And Clemson's OL isn't world class. They just had more depth and it eventually caught us.

BG:

I figured Jefferson would likely be a longshot and would probably just be looking at some free trips (ie to UM and FU, but why a free trip to UMich in Ann Arbor??).

I know we're done at RB. I was curious to see where Bernard would end up. I fully agree about Payne and Linder, with Barton likely following along with hopefully a good future as he builds up. Looking like RB should be quite the position of strength for the next 4-5 years with those already here and those coming in. I'm excited to see what Lamar Miller will offer next year.

Well on a brighter note we have gone from 2 yds a punt return all the way up to 7.72 yds a punt return,

bringing us in at a lofty 79th nationally, beating out Temple by .05 of a yd.

my boy Thearon must have at least one more return for 6 points left in him.

Yes soup I saw his fumble.

Solar, that was your boy Fluzzi's last chance. Talk about excuse making. He's such a Cokerite, mentally. He has to be gone after this season. We have Benjamin, Coop and Collier and he can't teach anyone how to set up blocks to spring these guys and he can't teach people how to hold their lanes, break through wedges and break down before they reach the returner.

Spiller's fast but we have a bunch of guys just as fast. He more than anyone really has no excuses.

CaptO,
you know I was just messin with your eternal optimisim.

Ya I just heard randy say they are practicing pass rushing all week, that it has to impove.

You gotta think Brandon Harris will make All America, think how long he has to stay with his man when the qbs we face have all day to throw. He still leads the nation in passes defended

its not only about pass rushing techniques being practiced. you got banged up guys at DE. they have been playing through injuries, but can tell they aren't the same at this point in the season. Moncur never was truly healthy. Smith got banged up. Vernon got banged up. Robinson a little too, but didn't need to miss any games like the others did. Steven Wesley got banged up and even when healthy has never been much of a pass rusher. The coaches need to get creative when it comes to clear passing situations - have to do something. but its 2/3rd the way into the season. tough to do.

Loco

if you're going to get beat over the middle anyway, blitz

Man that little 6 second spat between Randy and Whip is what the big deal is about. IMO that was just a minor tift during a heated moment.

Agreed Este. Everyone wants blitz, blitz, blitz, but you have to have the players to do it SUCCESSFULLY. Banging our third string LB into the line on 3rd and 10 is not the answer.

We are frightengly thin at DL and LB at this point.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Listening to Shannon on WQAM...

On the LB situation...."We got Sharpton, C-Mac, Buchanon and RAY RAY ARMSTRONG..."

On #11..."Some kids it just takes time for them to learn the system. Everyone learns differently."

On the last series in regulation..."We got Javarris, Coop and Berry all making big runs. We finished off UCF in the 4th with running and we got a 3rd and 3. We get the first down and the game is over. If one guy makes his block Javarris might go for 40 yards."

On Clemson's last play.."It was a bust. Our guy had the man then stopped and tried to do someone else's job. The secondary's play was because of busts, guys trying to do someone else's job."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

On our DBs overall.."You're going to see a lot of different things Sat. Different personnel sometimes too."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

On going into Wake..."Here's the way you gotta look at it...we had 11 penalties overall, 4 TOs and a pic six and we still had a chance to win the game. Now if that had happened in my first year the team would've shut it down in the 1st half. But after all that we still could've won this game. That's
