Maybe we move to #7 next year?

Cat 5 Cane

JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE LAST 5 MINUTES OF THE 1ST HALF... AND HOW COME NOBODY IS COMPLAING ABOUT THE ALL RUN PLAYS IN A ROW, THAT PRODUCED A TD. MAKING THE SCORE 10/7 WITH 50 SOME-ODD SECONDS REMAINING...

CLEMSON THEN RESPONDS WITH THE PERFECT RETURN FOR A TD...

UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES... THEY'RE STOPPED ON THE 25 AND CLEMSON WOULD STALL AROUND THE 50, WITH NO TIMEOUTS...

AND MIAMI LEADING 10/7 AND BEATING OUR CHESTS GOING INTO THE HALF.

SOMETIMES... SHIIT HAPPENS!

dlu

So Cav. the U kept getting burned on 3rd and long over and over and over but no pressure on the qtback, guess that would not have helped?

Solar UNC has a good defense but I don't think that shot at Lovett is fair. UNC has had two cupcakes on their schedule. Compare the numbers againt two teams that we both played and the stats look a little different.

Our third down defense to opposing offenses is like our 1st down passing game to opposing defenses, GRAVY!

I know this much, it's a good thing whipple is here and we're scoring points again, because things could have been a whole lot worse. In life alot of times, human beings can be ungrateful, so let's take a look at what could have been, let's imagine for a moment, bill young left, which he has and lovett becomes the d-coordinator presently, but for some reason shannon would have kept nix, now just imagine, we would have had a defense that was suspect and an offense that we would never be able to rely on, jacory would have made plays or been audibling alot, and than shannon would have had to deal with does he go with the audibler, or the play-caller or address the insubordination!

With whipple here and us putting up points, it's covering up alot of weaknesses right now with this team, even if we won saturday, it would have just felt better but the same weakness would still be their.

The biggest problem with our defensive calls right now, we're picking an choosing who to be aggressive with. We should have no respect of qb, and we blitzed 1 or 2, we should blitz them all, no free rides, one of the only qb's you don't blitz is kurt warner, his completion percentage against the blitz is off the charts.

Yeah, but don't let it happen to U!

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Soup, this dead horse beating is old. You should let Esteban Break Down Wake to get the topic moving forward.

Solar, come on, those stats are ridiculous, mainly because Lovett wasn't the DC. He coached DBs and STs. lol

Besides, our D is about the 35th best after these first six games. If we'd had two more cupcakes like everyone else we'd look a lot better.

But we'll improve, just not as quickly as everyone wants, myself included. hahaha

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

I could tell U what makes me feel good, but that has nothing to do with UM football and is not blog material.

I agree Cav, the WF game can't come soon enough. The team will come out either one of two ways.

1. They come out feeling sorry for themselves and they struggle with Wake

2. They come out fired up and lay a 2005 esq beatdown on the Deacons.

After all they will be playing in front of a larger crowd for this game

86, i forgot all about that, if you didn't post nothing else, that day when we were discussing the world coming to an end and you said that about as long as we win 2 championships by than you'd be fine with that, i was ROFL. Especially if the world came to an end and we won the last national championship before it did, we'd have eternal bragging rights in the HERE AFTER!

That's right next to a partna of mine who was worried and than pissed off at his son before a basketball game, he coaches his son's team and his son is the point guard of course, so before the game, they come screaming to him that his son passed out, he runs over their in a hurry to aid his son, and once his son finally came too, they asked what happened, his son is 9, how he passed out though, his son and his team-mates were playing that "who can hold their breath the longest" game, rofl, he was pissed when he was tellig me the story, but i told em, in a question/statement form, so i guess your son must of won huh, that boy is competitive, tell em to ease up.

cat5, come on man, when we ran the ball before the half, that was ok because the game wasn't on the line at that point, but when the game is on the line, here's the real deal, had we been up by only 1 point again, we would have been a whole lot more aggressive on that 3rd down, but since we were up by 3 points, shannon felt the worst that could happen was clemson would tie the game up and we go to overtime, well he was right.

I'm glad shannon is our headcoach, but he'll hear it from his peers about that conservative play calling at the end, shannon can be stubborn about it if he wants to, but he knows better than anybody else, running the ball 3 straight times when a game is not sowed up, "YOU NOT THE MIAMI WAY"!

on another note im going to try and change the subject so we can all exhale.

i would really like to see what Ben Jones and Washington look like on that left side. after this year it might be better if Orlando goes to RT (i am of assuming that he stays). Gunn goes to center and Figs starts at RG.

i didn't get a chance to see the FAMU game but i heard that Jones got in.

dlu

Thats right Charlie, the U turned a 38% completion qtb. into a 70% completion qtback in one game, great work.

JCane

I agree with you bigtime, 86. The d lacks depth and has a lot of young guys playing. Okay. How do you try to make up for this? Do you simply run almost the same schemes every play or do you mix it up a little? The schemes can stay more basic often when you know you just have the horses than can keep up even if the other team isn't fooled by anything. We aren't at that point.

This team really isn't quite ready for the top 10, but still found a way to have its chance. The coaching was a letdown. As for my complaints of running 3 straight at the end of regulation being compared to late in the first half when we scored by running, the 3rd down and 3 toward the end of regulation had the whole dang Clemson D in the box in an almost goal-line D with lots of football field to play on behind them. It could have worked, but the odds were far better to not simply run it dead on in that setup.

The areas that often take more time to develop are the OL and many of the D positions. Look where we're still growing up and needing depth...all of these positions. The skill positions are on O are still learning but are further ahead. Truly, to have fully reloaded we need to look for 2011, although 2010 should be quite the team. I do want to see further improvement by the coaching staff in using its talents accordingly, even though they have done a lot of good things in most of their games this season. A really good team doesn't have leeway for offdays by the coaching staff either though....a great team often does, but we're just not there yet.

Now, on to Wake Forest. This is a statement game, so how about the team makes one! WFU has just come off a loss to Navy and a huge loss the game before to Clemson.

JCane

Also, we know what JJ and Coop can do and can do well already. Berry appears to have more upside for many parts of the offense already, so use him. He's a bruiser.

dlu, shannon knows better than that, Canez1, i meant to say, shannon did bring the heat, but remember, shannon only brought the heat mainly when teams got in the redzone or across our 50 yard line, which always surprised me, i'm thinking, why we waiting until now to be aggressive.

When we were up by 3, and jacory was winding up to go deep, he got sacked(the 1st play where franklin was moved out to left tackle(congratulations esteban it finally happened, lol and your boy desean jackson is doing his thing, i was wrong on that one, did he get hurt dancing though :)kevin steele came wit ha blitz at the right time, that killed our momentum, other wise clemson would have been down 10. The whole game you're thinking, if we can just get up by 10 points we'll be straight.

Anyway, we're heading in the right direction, and will continue to, shannon will learn quick or he needs to, and i'm sure he knows this, but the aggressor often times, he's the winner.

Then, IMO it's time to judge.

moneycane

Solar I ain't giving Lovett a free pass, I just don't think the UNC comparison is fair. I just got a feeling things will be different after the Wake game. The D has some holes but I see players improving as well. Joe Joseph, B Harris, DVD, and Sheilds have all improved but the coaches get no credit. But win we lose one game line up the coaches in front of the firing squad and lets roll in the next guy so we can do the same thing. mmo1 although UM played sloppy I gotta give Clemson credit. They made 1 more big play than we did. It hurt because Miami should have won the game and didn't capitalize, Clemson did. All part of the growing pains with this team. Was Moncur out for this game or did he play and I just missed it?

pb(CSROH10)

Moncur looked 100 years old hobbling off after each series.

My seats are behind where the D gathers when they are off the field.

For those interested, and not any big surpise, STA rb Gio Bernard verbaled to the Irish today. Not a big surprise, and likely not one when a teammate or two join him. It doesn't look like Payne or Linder will be among them, however. :)

I saw Lemonier attended the Clemson-UM game, but arrived late and left early with comments being that his friend that he came with wanted to go and that he never heard what happened in the game til later. Don't know if we should read between the lines of this attitude....

Perry has a lot of upside imo, although likely as a bit of a project. His physical presence and abilities are off the chart. His weakness is only two years of organized ball, but his potential could be huge on the DL.

moneycane

I guess I missed it pb. I was too busy cheering. I just feel like Moncur has a knack for making big plays on third down.

ONCE A CANE, ALWAYS A CANE. It's all about the U, right?

I support MY GD FAVORITE TEAM, in good and bad times. Even when me and Randy were living in a hotel (for 15 MONTHS), I still found a way to support my CANES. I was ALMOST on the street and still supported my team, when we could. (thx 86)

If it wasn't for our LOVE of the CANES, I'm not sure me and Randy would talk to each other. UM football was the glue that cemented our relationship.

Say what U want, its that important. Not W's and L's, but watching together, talking, and spending time together. Going to games together, experiencing things my dad did when he was a kid.

I hope U can share it with someone else, like this.

It's Heaven, b/c me and Randy are Best Friends.

Calvin... Your point that Whipple should be throwing when instead he ran the last 3 plays before turning it over to Clemson with 3:52 remaining... But think back to the other games we have played ball control in the last minutes of the games.. 5: minutes and 8: minutes, all by ball control and running!

remember we had just intercepted Clemson in the end zone with 5:20 remaining and the ball is put on the 20yl... run, run and run with 3 yards for a first down... misfired... and we had to punt it.

But Whipple was doing exactly as before but this time we came up short... was he right to throw or should he have run... since we didn't get it ... Your right, he should have passed the ball...LOL ... flip a coin but had the receiver dropped it... all bets are off!!

The bottom line, we were still ahead by 3... Clemson did a hell of a job and tied us... the rest is history... but second guessing Whipple of the third time rushing in a row is a toss-up! especially sinse we were gaining great runs prior and don't forget Jacory could have changed the play on the line... maybe?

Heart. Heart. Heart. Against VA in the last game in the OB, we all said this team had no heart. Well this year, they have done nothing but show heart. There is NO quit in this team. They show up every week and play. Even in this loss, they played hard, fought to the end. As long as we have these players with that heart, good things will come down the line.

I won't question the coaching staff on play calls, although I do think Berry should be the featured runner when you get first and goal at the five, and you intend to run it. And, was Ray Ray on the field for the last play? To me, he is Miami's best safety. But these coaches have done a great job this year, and they see practices during the week. It sucks we lost but this team is so much improved from last year. If such an award was given annually, we would win it hands down.

I actually came here to try to get more information on the timeout before the half. It seemed from video I watched, that Whipple signaled that he was ready to spike the ball before the timeout. Last year, in the California bowl game, Randy called a timeout under similar circumstances. I was wondering if anyone knows definitively who called the timeout. A spike there would have given us two plays to get a first down and still left the middle of the field open, thus allowing Jacory to throw someting in the ten to fifteen yard range. Does anyone know? I won't criticize Shannon for the timeout, if he called it, there are two theories on it, but I am curious.

Fortunately for us, it's not the attendance that recruits cares about, it's the chance to win a NC and eventually get a chance to play at the next level because of the system we ran here so recruiting wise, you shouldn't be worried about them getting turned off by the lack of fan support!

Just got home from MNF and I lost both my fantasy games this week as well as the 'canes and Dolphin games! Grrrrrrrrrrr....

This post from PB is right on the money for me, I'll judge the D next season. There isn't a D to speak of right now. There are no gimme games left on the schedule with the depth we have. That's reality!

And enough with the "Cinn. lost 9 guys last year" stuff! They didn't lose 9 guys to injury, they lost 9 guy's to graduation, who had 9 guys replace them, who also had 9 guys replace them! Apples and oranges!

We are going to have incredible young recruits sitting all over our bench next year waiting for their opportunity to play! We should have one of the best freshman defensive classes in the country, and most will not even see the field because of the guy's that are in front of them!

I'm not an expert, but the play that Clemson burned us on was not a play they were running all night. Bend don't break is all this D is capable of right now. We were in a better position to blitz UF last year than we were in to blitz Clemson this year! That's reality!

Al mistakes aside, we had Clemson where we wanted them in the 1st OT, 3rd and 10 from the 26. We almost sacked their QB at the 35 on second down. We lost in overtime to one of the best teams in the ACC, and we beat THE best team in the ACC earlier in the year.

Timeouts because of confusion suck, but MOST of our timeouts this year have been to save or prevent scoring. That's what timeouts are for. You can run a 2 minute offense without a timeout. If you need a timeout to run a 1 minute offense, 8 out of 10 times you were already screwed anyway!

We have had some terrible clock management at critical times over the last two seasons, but those are issues that will correct themselves with depth and maturity. Didn't Jacory use our last timeout?

Jimmy Johnson and Co. didn't exactly shine during the Fiesta Bowl against Penn. St. now did they? He turned out OK in the end though, didn't he? Could you imagine what they would say about Randy if he had to deal with the adversity of losing a NC that HE SHOULD HAVE WON BY 10-20 POINTS?

If Randy's 2011 team looks like the 2009 team, then I'll light all your torches before we run Randy out of town! (Just kidding!) But the reality of our program is that if the 2011 team looks like the 2009 team, the administration will have already done it for us.

Nighty night!

"The coaches failed to make our points more compelling than their fat little girlfriends.

Now their fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing, their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is 'how great you are' and 'how easy its going to be' and we had a bunch of people who wanted to win the football game but nobody wanted to play the football game."

The # of times we were cutoff and had drivers jump in front of us and hit the brakes has been un-nerving. Please know I am not a slow poke I set my speed control on I-95 for 5 miles over the posted limit and stay in one of the R/H 2 lanes, but those who need for speed takes them to 80-85 and are willing to zig & Zag are dangerous to me and themselves. A note after aprox 900K miles or more driving in Florida I have never gotten a speeding citation.

Rusty has posted a video of the "altercation" between Whipple and Shannon. Look at the 2:17 mark at Mike James' face. Says it all.

However, coaches spat all the time. I don't think its that big of a deal. Just bad to see on TV. Shannon said there wasn't an issue and I think that is his way of saying none of our business and he is right.

BG:

Any chance on Tony Jefferson out of California? He is a UCLA commit but has commented about always wanting to go out of state. Apparently he's looking to set up a visit to the U, among other places. Should know soon, as he's expecting to grad. in 12/09.

Long shot. I think he wants to visit but I do believe he's a long shot

JC.

We are done at RB and I already knew Gio wasn't coming ;-)

Also Payne said Linder is favoring UM so as it looks will pick up 3 from STA (Payne, Linder, and Barton)

I think our problems defensively are more depth related than scheme. We are getting thinner and thinner as the season progresses and that is expected. Anyone notice that when we go to nickel the DBs are Shields, Harris, and Van Dyke. What happened to Chavez Grant? Has he been passed up? Just something that makes you say....Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! HAHAHA

Add us to the list of those who do not want a shirt sent to them "U" have done enough for us.

if Landshark isn't going to fill and look as empty as it did the other day, why don't they close the upper decks and consolidate the crowd? that looked bad on TV for team 5-1. hate to rhink what the next crowd will be.

If you do that, what message are you sending to season ticket holders like me who spent $2,600 for four seats?

Fair point. don't have a good answer but it just looks so empty

 DATcane

jus went online to get my tickets for the VA game, why dont they drop the prices so they dont have 40,000 empty seats? 60 bucks to sit in the endzone..... fine by me I am going no matter what, but dam feel like I am getting screwed every time I buy my tickets!!

Hurricane Mitch

Original Canespacer HurricaneMitch (he hardly ever blogs now, but he's still around).

Thanks for the guilt trip, 86. I guess I'll try to be on the blog more. LOL!

Grant was in there...just not as much as normal. With Jacoby Ford lined up in the slot a lot you know you weren't going to see Grant in there sticking him all game. Had Brandon Harris take that responsibility a good bit - at least almost every time i paid attention to it.

and just watched the video bg posted. I hadn't seen the end of the half INT til now. My directv signal went out right after the 12 men in the huddle penalty. Yeah that was a bad INT. And hopefully Ben Jones is ready to play LT next year - if not him Corey White or Plein or someone. Franklin can play tackle maybe. But RT not left. i'm kind of glad I was wrong about him switching out to tackle this year. made ricky sapp look like a fierce pass rusher.

yesterday when I read the title, Love Hurts, exactly then the song came on the tv, not sure what that means , just means what it means.

When I was reading the article the song came on at my work, lol.

I could find no meaning either except to rub my nose in what an idiot I am. Why do I let something that I have no control over affect me so much. ( Even the Dolphins the next day wasn't as bad because I'm used to them breaking my heart. Love hurts.)

Mike Leach is awesome

His press conference after getting blasted by Texas A&M, ragging on his players listening to their fat girlfriends instead of keeping their mind on their priorities

Freaking awesome

When I see Leach on TV I stop what I'm doing and listen. Unpredictable and entertaining. Kind of like Quagmire on Family Guy, when he's on something funny is going to happen. Giggidy, giggidy.
