When U are getting older, but U are still completely in love with the Hurricanes and each other like Fran and his wife of over 40 years Jean (seen below with RandyCane at R at The Shark) you don't mind driving five hours from DeBary to get to the Stadium when the gates open four hours before kickoff. Hard core UM fans are like that, and to them losing really losing hurts. But even after the tough loss to Clemson they said that they will be back to see their team again soon, just as sure as they are married.
When U love your team more than life itself, it hurts so bad to lose. After the game was over we found the JSQ in tears and threatening suicide (we think she was kidding about running out into traffic?). Text message reports from her friends were that they had her on "close watch" and that it took "sight and sound supervision" to keep her away from the traffic flow headed out of The Shark. Not even the now infamous orange and green jello shots were going to wash away her pain on this night.
The word on the street is that the JSQ is scheduled to be released from the Crisis Stabilization Unit today at 4 PM with her new anti-depressant prescription. Please whatever U do, no more sharp objects around her at the tailgate party!
When you hate losing more than death like me (#86) and Lamar Thomas (#36) do, then losing, like love, stinks. Long time Canespacer Calvin can tell U that a few months ago when someone posted on the blog that the world was going to end on December 12 of 2012, I posted this comment: "As long as Miami wins one or two more national championships by then I'm cool with that." I meant it too; every word of it.
When U bleed orange and green like MiamiMike01 and RandyCane (seen above, front C and middle C with Fran, Mitch, Money, MoneyGirl and Jean) U do what U can to support your Hurricanes. They drove all the way from Jacksonville to attend the game only to see their U go down to the Tigers at the Shark. After the game when we were back on the patio by the pool at the lovely Hampton Inn in Plantation, Mike and I tried to drink away the pain of losing with a bottle of Tequilla (Patron of course). The remedy was only partially successful as we found out the next morning that the pain was still there, but had moved from our hearts to our heads.
When U follow the team with The U on their helmet for a living like AngryCane and Canechic do (seen above during happier times at the UCF tailgate party with daughter Nicole and friends), U have no problem making the four hour trip from Orlando for every UM home game since time began. And, U would rather take a sharp stick in the eye than lose another ACC game at home. Angry didn't get his name for nothing and after the loss he required a minimum safe distance of 6 feet. Anything within in striking distance is at risk of serious, and at times even life threatening, injury. Canespace is NOT responsible for any damages if U fail to follow safe handling instructions included with the blog.
But when U really love the Hurricanes, U will travel by air, water or even foot if U have to just to get to see them play. Original Canespacer HurricaneMitch (he hardly ever blogs now, but he's still around) flew in from Nebrsaka just to see the Canes play live at The Shark. Above U see him signing the famous Canespace banner at the tailgate party before the game. The banner has been signed by hundreds of Canes fans from all over the Country and a few former players like Lamar Thomas #36 and Russell Maryland #67 and others.
So to U lazy fans out there who live within driving distance to the stadium and choose to sit at home to watch the game instead of going to The Shark like the REAL fans seen here, U are pathetic. U simply don't love your team like we do. No, U don't. Get off the damn couch and get into the game.
If we don't see U at The Shark for the next game I will have no choice but to send my boys AngryCane and his partner in crime MoneyCane (seen below) after your sorry azzes. And it will NOT be pretty, trust me on this.
DC, I think even the most faithful fan is afraid of the team falling apart this season like last year. A true sign of RS maturing as a coach would be for us to come back and handle our business next week. We must take it one game at a time!

I do what I can. The crowd at the Clemson game was shameful. There is no excuse for that, NONE.
Posted by: 86Cane | October 26, 2009 at 03:26 PM
Well, U ain't seen nohting yet, because there will thousands less for both the Virginia and Duke games.
When Miami was it's dominating self, it didn't matter what the size of the crowd was, albeit it absolutely helped in significant matchups. Think the thriller with Notre Dame.
For instance, in a close game as Saturday's was, it definitely favors the home team to have vocal, rowdy fans screaming at the top of their lungs. But 40,000 and or 43,000 ain't going to do it! Especially in a 75,000 seat NFL stadium.
FREAK', why does the typical Cane fandom believe it's so difficult to win on the road in major college football. And it's even more difficult to win on the road in the sports of college hoops.

If you guys remember last year down the stretch the players tired out from having to play too many snaps.
The Clemson OC said four days before the game he intended to rotate his offensive linemen against our D line.
He was confident we would wear down because of our lack of depth there.
With more and more guys getting nicked and banged up we could see more fatigue being an issue the rest of the way.

Manny, also, pointed out the depth issue. He basically called out three Hurricane O-linemen, and two linebackers.
Speaking of the LB corp. What ever happened to Brown. The man has been here one full season, and half of one, yet still no significant action.
Like U's said solarcane, Miami could have use the additional ballers on Sabado.
Look for future opponents to employ the same Clemson tactic. Think rotation of ballers.
By the way, speaking of IRONIES, Beamer was bytching to the A.C.C. officiating chieftains about GTech's supposedly blocking techniques. Yet, Beamer Ball is known for low down DIRTY play.
Beamer sent in game film of the Yellow Jackets nasty play. LOL

The disappointment comes from the expectations built during the climb to # 10. If U r a top 10 team, U dont lose at home to an unranked team. That we lost and the way that we lost is painful. However, this too shall pass - depending on how we do the rest of the way. I predicted a 9-3 season in the summer. But, I also thought we'd be lucky to be 2-2 after our 1st 4. I only expected 1 loss outside of fsu/gt/vt/ou. When we got to 3-1, my expectations and everyone else's expectations changed. I overestimated our team. When we reach the point where home games against unranked teams are basically no-brainers, then I'll believe "we're back" and deserve to be in the top 10.
Problem areas:
Special teams
Pass coverage
Pressure on opposing QBs
Penalties
Turnovers
A team that has incredible DEVELOPED (not potential, but proven) talent across the board can get away with sub-par special teams, commiting penalties and turnovers. That is not Ur current CANES. We're almost there with the talent = we almost won. For the level we're on, we win that game by fixing 2 of those 5 problems.
Regrading the play-calling discussion/criticisms: I was surprised when 3 straight runs were called at the end of regulation. However, I don't think its a fair criticism to say that sequence "lost the game". If U look at the flow of the game - we averaged 5+ yds per carry; we had problems all game with pass protection; JH had already thrown 3 int's, 1 pick 6; clemson has a very good defensive backfield, and we needed 1 1st down to run the clock down. I think its fair in those circumstances to trust in your OL and RB to pick up a 1st. The downside being a punt if U don't get it. The upside being U run the clock. I have a feeling that IF we had thrown the ball and JH been sacked or INT thrown or simply NOT run significant time off the clock, the posts here would have been just as damm'n but instead people would have said why didnt we run the ball?...why risk a fumble?...etc etc. The OU game situation is comparable, but significantly different in that OU's strength is its front 7, not its pass coverage - exactly the opposite from clemson. AND, our lead was only 1 pt over OU so a FG wins the game for them. As we saw, a FG only tied the game for Clemson. Generally, U play for the tie at home; being less risk adverse about OT. When on the road, play for the win. Our D didn't come thru.
Hindsight is 20/20.
IMO a more reasonable argument is that asking an offense to overcome 4 turnovers, plus a kick return TD is asking a lot.
Giving the opponent consistent good field position adds significant pressure to the defense plus almost guarantees even if the D does its job, the O will start in poor field position.
Poor tackling and pursuit angles has been a constant topic the last few years when discussing the D. I saw more of the same on Sat. We're getting better, but still...how many missed tackles?
The difference in that game was a play here or a play there. That means that U can point to many different single plays or sequences that "lost" the game for us. IMO, special teams in general are killing us. Specifically, our kick return coverage.

U's win the Green n' Orange star for post of the moment.
As I said Saturday nite, it was a total TEAM loss. Of course, I question both Whipple and Lovett for some iffy decisions in the crucial fourth quarter.
Chit, the fourth quarter use to be Miami's quarter. But those years will eventually return.

I would like to ask however, and you can email me the asnwer if you like...how much do the shirts costs..i'm thinking of starting a side business to help out my church
Posted by: UMike | October 26, 2009 at 04:41 PM
UMike...The shirts cost $6 for the Canespace and $8 for the ST#26 shirts. XXL cost $1.50 more each for both.
U can get shirts cheaper if U use a white shirt or lesser quality shirt and only do a 1-2 color print. The Canespace shirt is four colors and the ST#26 is a photo print that is a special process and eight colors.
The company I use is in Jacksonville:

I haven't posted in a long time, but I'm an avid canespace reader. . .Saturday's loss hurt bad. I couldn't watch anymore college football the rest of the night.
But my daughter and I (both U Miami alums) are planning the trek from central PA to the UNC game and hope to be able to meet up with some Canes fans. We are entirely sick of hearing about Penn State-blah blah blah. Have to hear about them every day and we are sick of it.
Hope to meet some canespacers at the UNC game. We have tickets in the Miami section and also in the first row somewhere on the visitor side but that view doesn't look so good. We will probably stay up in the Miami section.

86---great article on how the U fans seem to be fairweathered fans and they only show up for games like FSU etc. Funny how that was the way it was when I was there back in 66-70. Embarassing how how these other schools with not very good records pack the place week after week.
And your analysis on what happened during the game was right on too.
Also, no need to send me a shirt either. Save it for someone else down the road. I think I have an XXL or an XL that I will mail back to you to use. I have a medium and don't need the bigger sizes, except for the Ohio State game next year for Richard. I also forgot about him!!!!

how can anyone be calling out RS. We're 5-2 and guess what we're not elite so a loss to a talented team was always on the cards. Could RS be better? yes, but he's growing like the team. I just don't get such negativity from some on here. I never will. I've never felt this team was the U of old but I do feel they have great chance to do it, just not this year. 10-2 would be great.
if Landshark isn't going to fill and look as empty as it did the other day, why don't they close the upper decks and consolidate the crowd? that looked bad on TV for team 5-1. hate to rhink what the next crowd will be.

pb...we tailgated with CC and Angry.
To find Canespace U have to:
1. Stay at The Hampton Inn or meet us in the lobby. We leave four hours before game time.
2. Go to WEST 22 in the parking lot at The Shark for the tailgate from when the gates open until 30 minutes before game time.
3. Go to the SMIRNOFF bar right outside of section 107 at HALFTIME. That is the designated Canespace meeting site inside the stadium.

Unfortunately I had to go out of town for the weekend and couldn't attend the Clemson game. When I caught a portion of the game on tv I was appalled at how empty our stadium looked!!! The Hawkeye fan sitting next to me at the bar could not believe that a 5-1 team would have such a poor turn-out. I can't disagree with him! Our young team has worked hard this year and deserves better than that! :(

I just hope Clemson doesnt beat us 3 more times this season
Its tough for us as fans to let go, it has to be even harder for those kids that gave it their all out on that field
Now is when coaching and leadership is most needed
Coach Shannon please dont let that Clemson game beat us more times
Show us this team is different and has grown
Lets finish strong this year
Come on Coach Shannon I know U got this

I love Mandingo and think all the free information that he gives us is awesome. However, I think he's being too short-sighted to say "Whipple needs to throw more" or "Lovett needed to blitz more." This isn't a damn video game. It's not that easy. There are so many more variables that go into it. Maybe their defense was taking away deep routs or Jacory wasn't making proper reads (he is a soph).
As far as Lovett goes, it's not easy to just say "we're not getting pressure lets blitz every down." Do we have the personnel to blitz? Sean Spence is our best blitzing LB and he was hurt. The next LB I would blitz is C-Mac, but then you don't have him in coverage while Sharpton (his pass defense deficiencies are will documented) is.
I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement, but there is a lot more that goes into it.
Posted by: TLuv | October 26, 2009 at 02:53 PM
This is one of the realist posts I have read in a long time. You cant just blitz just because you arent getting pressure with your front 4. I know all of you watch games every week and have been doing so for a long time. think about it. How many games every you ever watched where teams completely change their defensive philosophy mid game? WHY WOULDNT EVERY DC IN COLLEGE AND PRO JUST BLITZ. ITS SO FACKING EASY. NOT GETTING PRESSURE JUST START BLITZING. We have never been a blitzing team. You cant just go in at the half and say now we are going to come out blitzing. It sounds good in theory but as Tluv pointed out, you have to have the personnel to pull it off.
We only allowed 20pts on D during regulation. Spiller was shut down in the run game. He caught 1 long pass. Why would you start blitzing like crazy with those numbers? If the O completes some drives, doesnt Turn IT OVER 4 TIMES and the ST's make a tackle, the pass rush wouldnt even be an issue.

MORE FROM THE UM WEB SITE:
Junior punter/placekicker Matt Bosher has been named one of three Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week after his performance against Clemson.
Bosher, who was named ACC Specialist of the Week last week, had another solid performance as he kicked three field goals and converted four-point after touchdown attempts in Miami's game with Clemson. He connected on field goals from 49 yards, 51 yards and 22 yards and extended his consecutive PAT streak to 66 straight. He also punted three times, averaging 46.3 yards per punt with a long of 55 yards and did not allow a return.
For the season, Bosher is 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) in field goal attempts with a season-long 51-yarder. He leads Miami with 53 points.
Posted by: 86Cane | October 26, 2009 at 06:54 PM
Jimmy...if I'm the coach, I'm BLITZING. The corner blitz is my favorite defensive call and is basically unblockable if there is no RB in to block or if it comes from the opposite side from where the RB is lined up and if it comes from the QB's blindside even better.
Here U go bucko: U have Sam Shields out there at CB who struggles in coverage but who also runs a 4.2 and U don't bring him off the corner?
How many yards is it to the QB? 15-20? That's 2 seconds to throw the ball GUARANTEED. I want that everytime.
What does the OC call and the QB check to at the LOS on the CB blitz? The quick slant of course. So, U have C-Mac play the quick slant and either SMACK the WR or get the INT.
If U go back just ONE week to the UCF game, what was the play that won the game? Go ahead I'll wait...
I'm just sayin'.

IMO we are having an incredibly exciting, productive, hope building season.
I kind of wish we could all see it that way.
We are winning with kids who are turning into men right before our eyes. We still have 2 1/2 more seasons of watching greatness unfold.
Win or lose Saturday, it was an amazing game and light years away from getting smashed by a combined 100 points our last three games three seasons ago.
We will continue to build depth as our core of amazing young talent matures, and be playing for a National Championship next season or the one after that.
Let's enjoy.

Great post but PB you know how these fools are. We win, we didn't win by enough. We lose, Shannon's clueless and the players arent' any good.
We made a ton of mistakes Sat. and still could've closed out the game against a talented Clemson squad.
Would I like to have seen Whipple let Jacory close out the game instead of the OL-RBs? HELL YES.
Lovett's hands were more tied than it seems.
But the thing that every forgets is that the coaches are looking at this more closely than we are.
To me, this game highlighted our strengths, talent and offensive playcalling, and our weaknesses, depth and experience on both sides of the ball.
This is just YEAR 3 people. This team will not be 85 deep until 2011. That means there are still holes, in experience and talent. I hate to say it as much as anyone but it's true.
But it's coming. That much is for sure.
Now hopefully Shannon and Whipple will talk, which I'm sure they have, air it out and move on. They're both perfectionists and aggressive so they'll forget it like men. It's not the first time a HC and OC have disagreed about how to finish a game.
