Response to: I was wondering if anyone knows definitively who called the timeout. A spike there would have given us two plays to get a first down and still left the middle of the field open, thus allowing Jacory to throw someting in the ten to fifteen yard range. Does anyone know? I won't criticize Shannon for the timeout, if he called it, there are two theories on it, but I am curious. Posted by: SJMPARMAN

so the back up LBs are Brown and Robinson this week? Only two? Am I forgetting anyone?

So Cav. the U kept getting burned on 3rd and long over and over and over but no pressure on the qtback, guess that would not have helped?

DLU, I'm NOT DISAGREEING WITH YOU. lol

I'm only trying to understand Lovett's logic for NOT blitzing.

We don't have experience but we do have pretty good speed, right?

We blitzed and covered very well against UCF, right?

Clemson had a fresh QB, right?

We stopped the run, right?

So why not bring some pressure and reduce the amount of exposure our young DBs have to face??

If he was so worried about Spiller and Ford, I'd rather give the QB less time to make a decision or who to hit.

Ultimately, we'll never know why unless Lovett says something himself.

But apparently, when Lovett was at Clemson and AUB, he blitzed a lot. Go figure.

Posted by: pb(CSROH10) | October 27, 2009 at 10:44 AM

Given the play of said defense, apparently we didnt have that many to start...

I kinda take blame for this loss though. I sat on a different side of the shark (153) (and i HATE the side i sat on, behind the recrutis) than i normally do (101-102). Dumb decision on my part, right?

If you didnt get my sarcasm, there is no one person to blame for that catastrophe called a game this past saturday. Both sides played half-heartedly and neither the coaches nor the players were perfect. In the beginning of the season, i thought VT and clemPson (no im not just saying that now) would be the hardest tests to date, VT because of bud foster and clemPson because of their speed. You cannot rely on your athletic skills to beat teams like that. The team depth is of concern, yes. The playcalling is suspect, sure. But i dunno this team hasnt gelled the way i would have expected them to by this point, from FAMU on there have been consistent breakdowns and gaffes that real cohesive teams just do not have.

Oh and not having pat hill is a much bigger problem than anyone wants to admit. As good as our backs are as playmakers, they dont block particularly well. I miss that guy, badly.

 DATcane

did Randy jus say Ray Ray will play linebacker?

reggaebob

isnt cj holton technically a backup LB also? They 'moved him to safety' at one point but i think that was just rhetoric to hide his inability to play linebacker as well as they had hoped...

worst comes to worst we go all high school and run a base nickel with ray ray or a 5-2-4 with curtis porter. regardless, these fellas gonna grow up real fast.

Solar, haha, pre-season I didn't see a reason why we wouldn't roll through the ACC. By the 4th game, even, I thought we'd worked out the kinks for the most part. The D had some holes but after the way they bottled up UCF and blitzed I thought we were turning the corner......THEN THIS. lol

At this point, I think Shannon and Lovett need to sit down and really think about the defensive philosophy going forward. Our pass rushing hasn't developed, basically because we're banged up and have freshmen and sophomores trying to do MOST of the heavy-lifting, ONCE AGAIN.

So what do we do? Sit and play it safer or apply regular pressure from different angles and let the kids play aggressively?

Without a Spiller or Ford the rest of the way, it would be kind of silly NOT to blitz given our lack of front four pressure.

The irony of it all is that Shannon talks about being so aggressive but he generally plays his defense very conservatively.

He's more aggressive on offense than defense.

Whatever the case, Shannon needs to let Lovett be aggressive and apply pressure but no defense can defense WRs when a QB has all day to throw. And Clemson's OL isn't world class. They just had more depth and it eventually caught us.

BG:

I figured Jefferson would likely be a longshot and would probably just be looking at some free trips (ie to UM and FU, but why a free trip to UMich in Ann Arbor??).

I know we're done at RB. I was curious to see where Bernard would end up. I fully agree about Payne and Linder, with Barton likely following along with hopefully a good future as he builds up. Looking like RB should be quite the position of strength for the next 4-5 years with those already here and those coming in. I'm excited to see what Lamar Miller will offer next year.

its not only about pass rushing techniques being practiced. you got banged up guys at DE. they have been playing through injuries, but can tell they aren't the same at this point in the season. Moncur never was truly healthy. Smith got banged up. Vernon got banged up. Robinson a little too, but didn't need to miss any games like the others did. Steven Wesley got banged up and even when healthy has never been much of a pass rusher. The coaches need to get creative when it comes to clear passing situations - have to do something. but its 2/3rd the way into the season. tough to do.

Loco

Agreed Este. Everyone wants blitz, blitz, blitz, but you have to have the players to do it SUCCESSFULLY. Banging our third string LB into the line on 3rd and 10 is not the answer.

We are frightengly thin at DL and LB at this point.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Listening to Shannon on WQAM...

On the LB situation...."We got Sharpton, C-Mac, Buchanon and RAY RAY ARMSTRONG..."

On #11..."Some kids it just takes time for them to learn the system. Everyone learns differently."

On the last series in regulation..."We got Javarris, Coop and Berry all making big runs. We finished off UCF in the 4th with running and we got a 3rd and 3. We get the first down and the game is over. If one guy makes his block Javarris might go for 40 yards."

On Clemson's last play.."It was a bust. Our guy had the man then stopped and tried to do someone else's job. The secondary's play was because of busts, guys trying to do someone else's job."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

On our DBs overall.."You're going to see a lot of different things Sat. Different personnel sometimes too."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

On going into Wake..."Here's the way you gotta look at it...we had 11 penalties overall, 4 TOs and a pic six and we still had a chance to win the game. Now if that had happened in my first year the team would've shut it down in the 1st half. But after all that we still could've won this game. That's how much this team has grown and how much these players have improved."

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

On the team's preparation and attitude for Wake..."Their was a lot of enthusiasm. You should've seen it. We went 1s against 1s and no one was "woe is me". It was crisp, everyone responded, it was what you want to see."

On the pass rush, are you pleased??

"No, no, not at all. We worked this morning strictly on pass rush. We worked on that heavily and We're going to work on all week because it doesn't matter how good your coverage is, if you don't get the rush it doesn't matter. We got to get better at pass rush."

On Bailey...."He's moving to DE strictly because some of the younger guys like Porter and Regis have stepped up."

On Moncur.."It's just a bad situation. Little injuries just keep a player from playing as well as he can."

Esteban

pb, i'm in the "i would have liked to see more blitzes, but understand why we didn't" category.

Esteban

Bailey seems more comfortable pass rushing from LE than at DT or RE.

No Arthur, bro, not yet. He ain't ready. Ray Ray has moved ahead of him. That says it all.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

I'm listening to the Steve Walsh interview on QAM and the guy asks him if there was a game or a play other than the NC game that he really remembers or that really stands out....and I'm thinking to myself..."MEEEECHIGAN!!!!!".....and Steve says.."Well I think back to the Michigan game in '88."

Hahaha....I knew there was a reason he's my favorite Cane.

Then he tells the story..."When I stepped into the huddle to run our 2 minute drill, I said, "Guys, we've been here before", because I was thinking back to the FSU game in 1987. Then I looked around the huddle and THERE WAS ONLY ONE GUY who had been there before. So I said, "Well, I've been here before, so let's go!"

Classic.

Esteban

sometimes you gotta throw goes into the fire and see how they deal with it. need Arthur getting some PT just to help keep Colin/Sharpton fresh if for no other reason.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Walsh...."I think a lot of credit needs to go to Gary Stephens. He has such a way of grooming QBs. And he basically talked to Vinny while I listened for TWO YEARS. Then when I was the starter he talked to me while Craig Erickson listened for TWO YEARS."

TWO YEARS....Let that sink in.....TWO YEARS.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

So, DLU, Solar, Calvin, Este, PB, Soup et al, now that we have answers to all our speculation, what say you??

DZ8

Cav

Great stuff on Walsh. Love the part about how he was the only one in the huddle... need the right mix of experience but I'll never use inexperience as an excuse. How many times did we look at a season and say we have a bunch of inexperienced players and then those players step up and are better than the ones they replaced.

Also about the Randy interview. He said we have Colin, Sharpton, Ray Armstrong and Arthur Brown. He didn't mention Cookie. (or Holton)Probably just an oversight.

Later on in the interview he mentioned Bailey will be at end this week because the younger guys have stepped up. He mentioned Curtis Porter and Regis Micanor. Could've sworn it was Micanor Regis, haha. Bear Bryant used to scramble players names as well.

Thanks for the link JSQ.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Bernie, before the Clemson game..."This is one of those trap games...."

DZ8

At the start of this year with an extremely young team I just wanted to show improvement and be playing better football each week. Youth = inconsistency. We are seeing that. So far I am very happy with the way these guys are playing. The verdict on this season is still to be written. And, IMO, has only a little to do with wins and losses.

Love the range of emotions, from fire Randy to Randy is the greatest. Time will tell.

Good to hear from Randy that Whipple was yelling at himself. Has Whipple done any interviews after this game?

Canez1

Cav he is ready.

I am almost positive a banged RS's wifee and got caught. I am stikin with that.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

DZ8, did he say Arthur??? GREAT CATCH if he did. I thought he said Buchanon. Maybe I was putting words in his mouth. But dam, how does RR skip Buchanon? lol

And you're right about the youth=inconsistency, that's why I was a little worried about whether they show up amped or not.

Oh well, hopefully they've turned the heart-ache into anger.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Canez, lol, I hope you're right about him being ready. He always looks good when he's in action but I give him the benefit of the doubt coming from Kansas and learning a new position without any prior training.

But what's up with RR passing Buchanon?? Did Shannon just forget Buchanon there?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

DZ8, we'll be back at that point by 2011. By 1988 JJ had that thing running like a military machine. But that's five years removed from 1983, so it took a minute. By the time J-Smooth and Co. are seniors, it'll be there.

In other news, why is Christian Ponder getting complete ignored by all these QB awards people?

How in the hell do Jacory and Matt Barkley make the Davey O'Brien list but not Ponder??

Disgraceful and ridiculous.

fran

DZ8

I saw that about Ponder and thought I read it wrong. Stat wise I'd put him ahead of Jacory, lack of ints for one thing.

I think Randy was just speaking off the cuff and saw nothing in the Clemson game, only saw the 4th qrtr, to make me think Cookie is out. RayRay probably just has too much talent to keep off the field and the need is at LB. When he mentioned those names it was in that order, Colin, Sharpton, Ray Armstrong, Arthur Brown. Since I don't think AB has skipped Cookie I think RayRay will get worked in with Cookie getting the most minutes. JMO

For those of you making comments about the lack of crowds you see at our home games I simply ask…..Where have you been??? Unless Miami is playing a marquee matchup (FSU, Notre Dame, USC, etc…), they are not going to fill up a stadium. I don’t care if it’s Land Shark or the OB. It has always been this way and it’s one of the knocks I get (being a Miami fan) from other teams fans. Heck, one of my closest co-workers is a Husker so he is always brining this up.

The only way the Hurricanes sell out every home game would be if A) every other sports team in Miami leaves, B) Miami builds an “on-campus” stadium. Like UCF’s Bright House stadium but made of concrete and not aluminum, lol. C) Give away tickets or D) 86 has a free canespace t-shirt for the first 80,000 people. 

Honestly think about it Arthur Brown, there is another issue, maybe related to the way BBrown acted. Maybe coming to Canefest with a tenn jersey with Arthur. Its past any common sens. I do not believe it is Browns lack of getting it, I see brown fly on special teams.

I feel Shannon just does not like Brown for some reason at this pt. its personal, that is just my opionion based on basic logic.

when Arthur got an opportunity he didn't capitalize on it. And now he's back on the bench. I don't think there is any conspiracy to it. Just needs to do what the coaches ask him to do. With that said...with all these injuries they need to get him in there just so the other guys can get a breather if nothing else.

Best way for this D to get a stop on 3rd down is on 3rd and short. I am honestly way more confident in our D on 3rd and under 5 than I am on over 5 until it gets over 25 or so. even then I am not entirely sure they wont get called for a dumb penalty like PI or D-holding. Philly brau, I made the following point to a total stranger sitting next to moi, at the local sports bar, last Saturday. Albeit he was a college football fan, because he had his eye on the Miami vs. Clemson game.

I told this old school cat, that after JaCory threw the T.D., after a deflating INT, he'd win the Heisman Trophy his Junior or Senior season ( That's IF he stays around for his Senior year. ).

For Harris to comeback after being knockdown like that took absolute MOXY. A MOXY he nurtured on the streets of Miami.

Because, not too many major college football QB's, especially juniors and or seniors, could throw a length of the field T.D., after throwing an INT for touchdown the previous play.

Yes indeed, that's what I told this kool kat. In other words, I said Harris has PSYCHOLOGICAL TOUGHNESS!

Man, I still absolutely tought Team Shannon would win after that tight TD pass.

Btw, FINS UP at the Dolphins games is the absolute worst marketing idea I'v ever seen.

DZ8

I heart Jacory as much as the next guy but... he just threw the ball far enough away from the dbs and didn't overthrow TBenjamin. The play call showed Jacory the coaches have faith in him. The throw was a good, on-the-money throw but I think some of us are seeing too much into it.

I'm very confident Jacory will be here for his senior year. I would like to see more discipline from him as far as turn overs. Not just the ints but the lack of urgency in the pocket, often times resulting in fumbles. He has a Farve/Marino like issue where he just chucks the ball up into some dangerous situations. They got away with it because of their arm strength. He gets away with it because in high school and college his receivers are men playing with boys.

JMO, remember

I HEART JACORY as much as the next guy (or previous guy)

Honestly, he should be in the Heisman talk because FSU probably doesn't win a game this year without him and he's outperformed T-Bone and McCoy.

DZ8, yeah, Jacory does need more discipline with the ball and more urgency in the pocket. He's too cool sometimes, like against VT and at times against UCF. But against FSU he showed great pocket presence and movement under pressure. Quicker movements and reads are really the point, when to duck and run and when to throw it away quickly. He has the footspeed, he's just learning the actual footwork along with the mental work.

He'll develop those though.

Do you think Randy wouldnt play the #1 recruit in the nation if he knew it would help, just cause he didn't like his brother?
Do you think he's liked every kid he started?

Shannon knows his azz is on the line this year. Canes go bust and lose two more games the last half of this year and he's going to be looking for a job.

If Arthur could play, he would play.

He can't, so he isn't.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

PB, if those fools at CG are stupid enough to fire Shannon even after a 4-loss season, they're more idiotic than anyone I've ever heard of.

With that schedule and the way the kids have played, and the way they're clearly going to be playing, it would be height of idiocy.

Cat 5 Cane

somedays it goes like this!
