THE MIAMI-DUKE SERIES
- Miami owns a 5-1 record in the all-time series with Duke.
- After dropping the first meeting in 1976, the `Canes have won the last five meetings - including four since Miami joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.
- The last time Duke played in South Florida, Miami won 24-14 at the Orange Bowl in 2007. Last year, the `Canes picked up a 49-31 win at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.
- Over the last four meetings dating back to 2005, Miami has averaged 36.25 points per game against the Blue Devils.
A `CANES WIN OVER THE BLUE DEVILS WOULD...
- Give the Hurricanes a 5-3 finish in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
- Give Miami a 5-1 home record for the 2009 season.
- Give Miami its first eight win season since 2005 when the `Canes finished 9-3.
- Guarantee head coach Randy Shannon his best record since taking over the helm of the UM football program in 2007.
THE COACHES
Randy Shannon is in his third season as Miami's head coach and owns an overall record of 19-16. David Cutcliffe is 53-42 in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach and 9-13 in two seasons at Duke.
ABOUT DUKE
Duke comes into Saturday's game with an overall record of 5-5 and an Atlantic Coast Conference record of 3-3, with wins over NC State, Maryland and Virginia and losses to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and most recently, Georgia Tech. This past weekend in Durham, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Devils, 49-10, at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils feature on the nation's top passing games, coming in ranked ninth in the FBS in passing offense (297 ypg). Veteran quarterback Thaddeus Lewis ranks third in the ACC in both passing yards per game (264.0) and total offense (269.1). He comes in with 2,640 yards passing, with 16 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 134.22 passing efficiency. Lewis has three main targets in the passing game - wide receivers Austin Kelly (47 rec., 501 yards), Donovan Varner (46 rec., 708 yards) and Conner Vernon (44 rec., 601 yards). All three average at least 50 yards receiving per game while combining on 11 of the team's 20 receiving touchdowns. The less frequently used running game has four backs over 100 yards this year but none that have hit the 200-yard mark yet. Desmond Scott has a team-high 197 yards on the ground while Re'quan Boyette (128 yards) leads the team with 62 carries.
On defense, linebacker Vincent Rey leads the team with 82 tackles and ranks fourth in the league with a 8.2 tackle per game average. Safety Catron Gainey is nearly as productive, ranking in a tie for eighth in the league with 7.3 tackles per contest. Cornerback Leon Wright has proven to be one of the ACC's top pass defender, coming in with five interceptions that he has returned for 146 yards this year. Defensive end Ayanga Okpokowuruk leads Duke in both tackles for a loss (7.0) and sacks (5.0).
Kicker Will Snyderwine is 12-of-14 on field goals this year - including 8-of-9 from 30-plus yards - while punter Kevin Jones averages 39.2 yards per punt.
In the return game, Johnny Williams averages 8.3 yards per punt return and 20.6 yards per kick return. Williams is joined by Vernon (24.6 ypr) on kickoff returns.
COOPER CLOSING IN
Junior running back Graig Cooper needs just four more rushing yards to pass Willis McGahee for seventh all-time on the University of Miami's all-time rushing yardage list. Cooper, who currently leads the team with 541 rushing yards this year, also trails teammate Javarris James (currently sixth with 2,091 career yards) by 27 yards on the ground.
McCARTHY HAVING CAREER YEAR
Junior linebacker Colin McCarthy is having the best season of his career, coming into Saturday's game with a team-leading 78 total tackles this season. He currently ranks seventh in the league in tackles per game (7.8) and is on pace to become the second Miami defender to reach hit the 100-tackle mark over the last four seasons (Tavares Gooden recorded 119 tackles in 2007). McCarthy has reached double-digit tackles in three of Miami's last four games, including a team-leading 13 last week at North Carolina.
Esteban..I think ur right..but what kind of fans would we be if we didnt bytch lol...if were not 12-0,..we got something to complain about and it some cases, even then lol
what im amazed about are the injuries..with SOOOO many good players out for so many games, im suprised were still in the hunt for a 9-3 season. If healthy, I think were easily 11-1 right now...imo,,but im very happy with this year so far and more happy about our future
UMike...I'll make it work by editing it or add it to Este's blog. I was in Homestead again today and am now in Plantation at the Hampton Inn and trying to enjoy some quality time here with Mrs. 86. So little time to get blog things done!
86 Angry and I coming in the morning, changed the reservation to tomorrow night...Angry is still working and he will be too tired to drive. I will call you in the morning.
Looking forward to finally getting to bring my kid to her first game tomorrow. She has been incredibly excited for weeks now. My favorite is the last year of booing every time she says an FU license plate and the smack talk she makes to some of my FSU alum friends! At her elementary school the other day they made turkeys out of pine cones and feathers, and she couldn't wait to show me hers (two feathers, one orange and one green). Might as well give our kids a proper education from an early age, along with reminding if she wants to go to UM for school one day she'd better work on getting a scholarship!
BTW, my friend said he still hasn't gotten rid of the pair of USF tickets yet. He was more annoyed than I was about how long it took for them to come given how little time it left since he found he couldn't go. If anyone wants them, section 329, he's just hoping to get his money back (ie face value). Feel free to e at [email protected] if interested.
Calvin, my point on the Tennessee guys was that if they needed cash, they didnt need a pellet gun....I guarantee you, all they had to do was stick out their hand, and some booster's hand would have had a few hundred in it.....
I for one, think we need to go back to where everyone views our squad as thugs....Not saying they need to be, but PERCEIVED to be...back in the day, teams were scared and intimidated by us, and some games were decided before game even kicked off....

He might take him out after a series, but Harris was going to start.

< soup & este you both see the small picture clearly,
How bout the real fans in every stadium in the ACC, the bowl committess and all the other "smart" fans outside of Miami that see jacory benched for a minor finger injury after throwing four picks and losing a game?
Randy isn't going to do that to Jacory, out of respect for him, he starts no matter what.
That's the big picture, that's where Randy lives.
solar, other view is that he threw 4 picks cause he was playing hurt. there is already video from last week with him getting ice treatment during the game.

este,
yes I agree with you there
The media can influence a lot of people's perception about things.
He wasn't hurt throwing a couple of the earlier ones,it looked like he expectedhis receivers to out leap the defenders.
I was at the game and I saw him come out shaking his hand after one of those ill advised qb tackles.
It was hard to tell if his passes had less velocity because the UNC defense seemed to be just deep enough to double cover anything he threw.
That's behind him now, time to step up and lead his team to victory again.
For those who are so worried about Jacory's four picks, check out this University of Michigan stat sheet from a game played against us when we were #1 ranked, defending National Champs in 1984:
82! nice to hear from ya - was hoping that you would have been able to come to NC for one of the games although they weren't allthat- glad you are doing ok
Just got back from the Hawks game, although not a big NBA fan, I like this team... Mainly cuz they don't have alot of "star" power and yet they can all ball and are fun to watch. They won at the last sec by 2 points... All the close games that I want to see this weekend I have seen.
Go Canes!
PS - If you post on a dead blog, on the eve of the Duke game and no one is there to respond, does it still count as a post...?
JC, I hear ya. I've got my boys so hyped on the U, they can't put crayola to paper without thinking about the Canes. Always telling the pre-k teacher. "1st I gotta make a U for my daddy"...
figured out how to record the audio on this and save as a mp3 file, it took forever, but I will have this CD with me in Tampa next weekend on looooooop!

For those who are so worried about Jacory's four picks, check out this University of Michigan stat sheet from a game played against us when we were #1 ranked, defending National Champs in 1984:

The QB that threw SIX interceptions that game? Bernie Kosar.
