Today at Landshark Stadium your University of Miami Hurricanes routed the Virginia Cavaliers by the score of 31-20. The game was not as close as it sounds as Miami came to play and quickly took care of business on this sunny, breezy Saturday in early November.
Mike James, Damien Berry and Graig Cooper put on a rushing display not seen in the 305 since McGahee, Gore, Portis were wearing the orange and green. Jacory Harris was efficient if not spectacular as the Hurricanes roared to an early 24-10 lead.
The Miami defense, much maligned from their weak performance against Wake Forest, returned to form and shut down the UVA offense for most of the game before giving uptwolate scores. Brandon Harris, Colin McCarthy and Vaughn Telemaque all had INTs for The U while Allen Bailey, Olivier Vernon and Arthur Brown all had sacks for UM.
Brown, who played extensively for the first time at Miami, registered the first sack of his career and later caused a fumble deep in Cavalier territory that led to a 17 yard TD pass from Harris to Jimmy Graham to stake the Canes to a 31-17 lead and put the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter.
After the game UM head coach Randy Shannon when asked about Brown's playing time this week was quoted as saying: "Well, I was reading the Canespace blob all week like I always do and those blobbers on there were calling for #11 to play so I gave it a shot to see what would happen. They kept calling for "Free Arthur, Free Arthur". I guess those guys were right. Maybe I should listen to them more often?"
When asked how Brown looked out on the field, Shannon had this to say about his new star: "He looked good, but a little thin wearing #11. I think we are going to have him change numbers, maybe switch with Streeter (#86) so he can look more solid, thick and intimidating."
When prompted, Shannon continued: "Some of our best players and blobbers have worn #86 and AB has a chance to be one of those players. Streeter is tall and thin anyway so him switching to #11 should be no big deal."
Next week, Miami travels to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels in an other ACC matchup. When asked about the upcoming game and his strategy for beating UNC and his former boss in Butch Davis, Shannon replied: "Well I'll just ask myself this one question: What can Brown do for U?"
///What a day for football!!!
Skys are clearing out. Will be 80 degrees and windy... time to run it down their throats, mixed in with some short slants to benji, collier or D johnson.
Definitely would like to see double TE's used today to stop the rush.
They say JJ is playing today... But hope Berry gets the load.
Maybe we'll see Cooper catching out of the backfield or end arounds.
Who knows, something not seen...maybe Highsmith gets some PT and is used in some option plays.
Coach... Put me in!

Sad but maybe true lets say Shapton goes down during the game and 11 comes in and goes for 11-12 tackles and a sack next game Shapton at 70% would still start over Author

Play Arthur
If that were to be the case, Randy would be forced to play the freshman, even if he got 3 Sacks while causing havoc.
Talking about Brown... anfd mabye talking out my azz, but why can't McCarthy or the coaches call the defense scheme and let Arthur play the middle anyway, till he gets his feet on solid ground.
Posted by: Cat 5 Cane | November 07, 2009 at 09:18 AM
I know, I'm pulling at straws but It's time to see Arthur get his shots.

Posted by: Cat 5 Cane | November 07, 2009 at 09:31 AM
I could very well be wrong on this
But I dont see RS just letting AB or anyone else for that matter just get their shot unless they are showing what he wants to see on the practice field
I want to see AB out there showing us all what he can do, but maybe RS just hasnt seen enough from him to trust him yet during game action
Again this is just my opinion

I never understood how so many players look so good during spring and then vanish...AB was making plays..at the spring scrimmage (not canesfest) AB was making plays everywhere. He was behind the line A LOT..him and VT blowing plays up.

If Author played anywhere else he'd playing by now but not with are over complex cover 2 where the Mike is more safety them LB in Randy's version of the cover 2
Free Author Brown
For those who say free himself sometime you have to be given a chance sometime??? if not how can u explain JJ starting at RB put missing ALL OF SPRING BUT ENDED FIRST ON THE DEPTH CHART Berry upstaged all the running back but ended up 3rd lol So which 1 is it practice hard see the field OR BE A RANDY KID AND PLAY PISS POOR AS YOU WANT AND STILL START.
Posted by: dawgmeatcane | November 07, 2009 at 10:03 AM
Super...maybe ur right...but you know what im talking about..there is always players killing it in the spring..or so we read and hear about..then their gone..I mean Streeter had a long td every practice it seemed, idk what it is but it happenes every year. I remember a few years back when Derron Thomas was tearing it up in practice, he was so fat etc etc then gone. Just happens every year..weird
Posted by: UMike | November 07, 2009 at 10:08 AM
dawg...i cant say i disagree with you there. I love randy, but maybe he feels he owes something to his SRs? maybe..even a couple years back when Kahil Jones started...idk but your right...Berry and James were obviously the best rb's in spring and yet JJ ends up #1...he was playing like 4th string.
Posted by: UMike | November 07, 2009 at 10:12 AM
Randy play favorites if AB was starting but performing shapton he pull him in a heartbeat
Posted by: dawgmeatcane | November 07, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Here's one of the problems i see on defense, we don't adjust in game and by that i mean, if you see a team in a certain formation, a blitz should be called, for instance they go with a 1 wide receiver set, we need to make them pay for that formation every time by sending the house and safety/db watches the tight-end or running back if he's flaring out.
We don't get aggressive enough on alot of obvious offensive formations, we just stay contant to line up in the 4-3 defense and than we like to blitz on obvious downs and obvious down and distances. Our defense needs to be givne the freedom that when they see a certain formation, force the oppossing offense to make a quick read and either throw it or panick, it's the litle things like this taht'll make a big difference down the stretch.
I'm tired of hearing our defense keep talkign about the other team came out with something a whole lot more different than what they prepared for, who cares, and what kind of shat is that, of course that's going to happen unless it's g-tech. We ned to start dictating on defense like we have been with our offense.
Although i luv this, let's not need a performance again like this to win today!

Spring practice and being game ready are 2 different worlds
I agree that maybe all he needs is a chance and he is just a sophmore. Nobody is questioning his work ethic or attitude
He is just a sophmore and before he leaves Miami IMO he will be a major factor for this D
Take Bailey for example, its now his jr. year and he has become the monster we all knew he would be
Posted by: Sebastian | November 07, 2009 at 10:16 AM
wakey Wakey it's game day bytchez.

Posted by: SuperCooper | November 07, 2009 at 09:55 AM
Totally agree and not just a play here and there. It takes time to knock off the rust and the butterflies.
There are plenty of vet guys to make the D calls and help the kid out.
Sharpton busts on the majority of his plays out there. Why not give the kid a chance.
Does it really make a difference if the kid out there is a senior who is making some mistakes or a Soph.
Do the right thing RS. He needs to be thrown in.
This isn't last years team. The kid has help out there if he stumbles.
ARTHUR ARTHUR ARTHUR

then what the hell is spring ball for? I guess allow juniors and seniors who play sh!tty and still start I thought Randy told the recruits " this year I recruit you next year I recruit somebody to replace you" let be real Randy hated WW because he freelance but MADE PLAYS WHEN HE DID SEE THE FIELD and not one of the LB starting ahead of him lead them team in tackles, your either a randy kid or your not
PS Cook outplayed Harris in the spring ball... wait a minutes J12 is playing just the seasin just like he during the spring oh well spring ball means nothing

Good new blog, my kind of thinking.

dawgmeat, jj starting over all the other runningbacks had more to do with his ability to pick up blockers as oppose to him running the ball. berry is getting better at pass protecting though. Than throw in the fact that javariss james with the rigth down and distance is the better back, than when you go back and look at the oklahoma game overall, tough running, and pass blocking, javariss as of right now is the most complete back on the team.
Also keep this in mind, alot of players that shannon deemed as key senior/upper classmen, where held out alot of practices early on in the spring. shannon already knew what he had in them. If the runningback position was just about running the ball, berry and definitely truth miller would be our 2 best backs right now and would be getting all the reps, but miller has to pick it up blocking wise or he'll only get alot of spot duty carries come next year, he rounds out his blocking, miller will take somebodies spot.
ALso, damine berry's confidence level wasn't where it needed to be earlier in the year, no need in running that guantlet with players who need their confidence level raised. It's their now for berry, and he'll only improve from here on out. Not about favorites with shannon it's just that with a young team, he wanted to play the older guys more who were and are physcially ready to take more pounding.
Posted by: Calvin | November 07, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Dawg - With JJ its always been a health issue as he is our most COMPLETE back (running, receiving, blocking). It might seem like playing favorites to you, but the bottom line is that when he is right, he is able to do the most things.

I didnt say spring ball didnt mean anything
Of course it does
Im just thinking of reasons as to why some of these kids dont see the field
There is more to just catching the ball, or making a play on a run
Pass coverage is a huge part for the LB position and if the reports of him struggling in that area are true then that could be another reason its been slow for him to see the field
Im not here to argue, but just give another side of it
Posted by: Sebastian | November 07, 2009 at 10:41 AM
dawgmeat, you on point about shannon not liking freelancers out their, that maybe the one thing that blinds shannon a little bit because willie williams made plays out their, at the same time, once teams starting adjusting, and trying to play to ww17 weakness, they would pull him out the game, and truth be told, ww17 should have been on that field a whole lot more. In shannon's mind though, for some reason certain players he'll putt hem on a 2 year plan or a 3 year plan, had ww17 stayed though, their would have been no excuse.
Now when i hear other players saying authur brown needs to study more film, that validates him not playing more a little bit. At the same time though, i can understand not playing ab againt Fsu and oklahoma, but not playing ab against g-tech and more against v-tech on defense, i didn't understnad that, now i do hear randy keep talking about this de-recruiting you have to do with these 5 stars and what not, and i know shannon hates a player who has all world talent but doesn't work hard like he doesn't have the talent.
So it's a double edge sword with randy, 1st randy came up with great players who's work ethic was a great as their talent, i'll name irvin on up to SEAN TAYLOR. so when you got guys like them who are the litmus test in shannons mind besides himself, certain players coming thru here ain't got nothing(playing time)coming under shannon.
Posted by: Calvin | November 07, 2009 at 10:50 AM
With everything being said, i'm glad we do have shannon's watchful eye over the program though, the more balancd shannon becomes the beter he'll be as the headcoach here, and what i mean by that i simple, any player that doesn't work that hard or who shannon sees as someone not giving it up for the team or causes distractions for the team, shannon looks at them as if they are betraying the team/UM he loves and help build to the envy of all of college football. So with that he may hold a grudge but at the same time he becomes more balanced we'll be alright.
I know shannon has always been known to be real stubborn and that comes from the hard life lessons he had to learn growing up so when shannon is on a path that has worked in the past to get him to this point, he's not going to just up and deviate from it quickly.
