I know we are in the midst of football season and your Miami Hurricanes are sitting at 6-2 but since we have a UM basketball player now playing TE for the Canes football team we thought we would glance at other sports around the UM campus.
Yes Canes fans there are actually other sports that matter and are now beginning to show themselves around Coral Gables. Here is a sampling of what is happening down in the 305 as roundball and hardball sports get busy:
ROUNDBALL: UM Basketball Head Coach Frank Haith: "We're excited for another season. We really like our team. We're young, but we also have some veterans and we're excited about their improvement over the last season. We're really excited about the newcomers and what they bring to the table. They young guys have really worked extremely hard in practice, and our practices have been very competitive. These guys are practicing really hard - as hard as any team we've had here, and that's been great to see. I think that we have depth because of that. When you have practices that are very competitive like we've had, you feel good about your team."
The Hurricanes officially open their 2009-10 season at home on Sat., Nov. 14, versus North Carolina Central at 4 p.m. Miami's home tilt versus Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wed., Dec. 2, highlights the eight-game non-conference slate.
Season, group and individual game tickets may be purchased by calling the Hurricane Ticket Office at 1-800-GO-CANES or online at www.HurricaneSports.com. Individual game tickets for ACC home games go on sale Fri., Nov. 27.
HARDBALL: UM Baseball Head Coach Jim Morris: "We are excited. We have some holes to fill from the number of players we've lost the last few years from our 2008 World Series team but I think we have a talented group heading into the fall. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we have a lot of good, young players," Morris said. "We have proven that we can go to Omaha with young players or old players so our goals are very high for this club."
The University of Miami baseball team officially opened fall practice Thursday afternoon, holding a nine-inning intrasquad scrimmage at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes - coming off an NCAA record 37th straight trip to NCAA Regionals in 2009 - enter the fall with a 35-man roster consisting of 21 returning players and 14 newcomers.
The `Canes return 17 letterwinners from last year's 38-22 team, including 2009 All-ACC performers Chris Hernandez, Yasmani Grandal and Scott Lawson. In addition, two-time All-ACC performer Eric Erickson returns after missing the 2009 season rehabilitating from an injury.

pounding it up the gut is exactly what you don't want to do against a 3-4 defense, espcially if the nose is really good. the 3-4 is built to stop the run and cause confusion in the passing game. plays that are most effective are stretch plays. you get those 3 down linemen running laterally the whole game and they will wear down.
3-4 defenses typically play a lot of zone coverage, but i don't know what UVA does. there are 3-4's that allow their front seven to rush the passer (Steelers, Dolphins, Cowboys) and then there are ones that bring any and everybody (Ravens, Jets,).

86 I can feel your pain on the driving tip. Last year I came to every home game from Naples. The worst was the VT game, cuz I had to be up for work the next day at 5 am. Drove back to Naples that night (THANK GOD WE WON) and got up bright eyed (yeah right) the next day.
Thankfully Im back living in MIA and def dont have a problem with a 20 min drive

Legion, those of you going to the UNC game on November 14 any suggestions of where to stay in Chapel Hill. I will be driving up from FT. Lauderdale to the game as a birthday present to my soon to be 14 year old son.

I am staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on Center drive in Morrisville.
Seems like a nice hotel and priced well.
probably 15 mins from the stadium.
I did some research and this was a good choice.

Dayton,
Thanks for the insight on the 3-4. I figured that despite the nose (unless he is all world) you ran it at them to try and pancake the LBs as once they start moving they can outrun your OL on stretches, but having never played I will certainly heed to your experience.
Also, passing wise what routes with WRs work best? And is this a good D for the TEs to face?
Posted by: shwarma | November 04, 2009 at 11:55 AM
I forsee a steady diet of Berry and Mike James, mixed with a renewed presence of the TE this game.
They want that D off the field as much as they can so they can get as healthy as possible for the stretch run.

Both Shaw and Tony Jefferson are planning a visit to Coral Gables per insidetheu.com, assuming both players gets wowed by their visit, what is going to happen to the 5-7 schollies left we have, we still got a shot from the following players.
Brandon Linder and another OL i forgot the name of from STA.
Dunkley, McCartney, Lemonier, Josh Shirley, Ferg, Luc, payne, and maybe even gore.
That's already 10 players from our list plus the other 2 who wants to visit, that's 12, with us winning some games and the future looks very bright, a lot of this players are jumping in our bandwagon and probably thinking NC next year, would we be able to offer more than the allowed number, do you think grey shirting would be an option, and if this kids even accept that, anyone wanna give their take!?!

shwarma,
i really couldn't tell you what routes are good because i don't know how Virginia plays their 34. maybe someone on here has watched UVA play once or twice this year, so they'll know more than me.
if i had to guess, i would say that their defense can't be all that great. so if we come out and execute, most of our plays should work. i think Epps should win every time he is matched up against a LB.
and we ran up the middle on that UVA defense last year with Cooper all game long, so it is possible. but our o-line play has been spotty these last few games so i really don't know.
Posted by: Daytoncane | November 04, 2009 at 12:21 PM
Dawg - you need to slow your roll. I understand Grant isn't a superstar, but he gave good information and is a mentor to the younger guys. Also, he has played plenty so I would watch closer (played poorly, but not a ghost like AB). Not saying don't criticize his play, just don't be a total hater.
SSIB - Where did you hear 5-7? Regardless Dunkley and Luc are longshots at best IMO so I would forget them. Shaw would be great as we need the help at CB. Hopefully Vaughn T can persuade him.
If I had 5-7, this is what I would like to see that blends wants/needs/reality:
Linder
Payne
Shaw
Harris or Hurns
Jones
Lemonier or Ego
Barton or Arie K.

Well, i guess this one makes the most sense, i see it that way too, and 86, i think we'll have to wait til NSD before we completely rule out a kid coming here for all these kids flip-flops their minds everytime. Luc maybe the longest shot, but i think Dunkley is that good as a wideout and wouldn't think twice to come here and compete, still, i think he's headed to the turds, i feel good about Shaw, i think we take him over payne, i forgot about Jones, i think he comes here too, Lemonier is very unpredictable, Linder is one guy i'm also cosindering as a miami commit already, he didn't commit on the spot when he went to south bend, that says a lot.

Is he in the minority here? He's not the first to talk about how FSU treats returning players.
Of course Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks get the red carpet treatment I'm sure.
But to me the insightful part was the fact that every player isn't treated the same way, esp. after graduation. Take Yatil Green being with the team at UCF. He had a lot of promise and talent but it never really blossomed. He's welmcome just like Sapp and Irvin and Vilma.
That article just explained a lot about the differences between the two schools and confirmed a lot about what attracts kids to the U.
Honestly, his statements aren't any different than Sapp's words about our DL and Irvin's promise of choice words to Shannon after the OB finale.
But if an FSU players says similar things, he's a bad guy.

CC, exactly what you said. Finally these dodo birds can shut the cheese-pipe about "the coaches suck."
Maybe they can improve their teaching methods, which I'm sure they all try to do but everyone learns differently, everyone has different abilities and inclinations, strengths and weaknesses.
I think this AB situation might make Team Shannon much more hesitant to sign a kid like Brown in the future.

I JUST LOST ALL RESPECT FOR HANK --- COKER MENTALITY
“For me, it is tough to not play down to the level of our opponents because you are expecting to win and it is not very exciting and then warming up is very flat,” Hankerson said. “You would rather have a bigger game or a bigger team that you would go up against.”
Posted by: Canestruck | November 04, 2009 at 08:23 AM
>>>>
Are you serious? Do you honestly think Michasel Irvin was as pumped to play Central Mich as he was to play Notre Dame or FSU??
Hank just told the truth. That's not a Coker mentality, that's reality for most college football players. That's why those great Miami teams had letdowns against Rutgers, Cincinati etc.
Does this mean Hank needs to find more ways to motivate himself? Probably.
Come on dude. Like Canefan_Gatorgrad said,
I hope Hank can sleep now knowing you've lost all respect for him. lol

in that Herald article Coach Shannon was quoted saying that we aren't the same team we were in the 1st four games.
Injuries have made us way different, especially on defense. No new players coming back from injury this week (RS said that too).
This team could be in trouble guys. Coach sounds pretty worried and he never gives the media that kind of access into what he's thinking.
Let's cheer our butts off this Saturday! Go Canes!
Posted by: CanesAddiction | November 04, 2009 at 09:12 AM

Addictions, he's not worried. Later in that very same interview he said he thinks this team is finally realizing how good they can be.
That's one more reason why I despise most of these two-bit dipshyt hacks who call themselves writers. They pick the quote that sounds the most tabloid and leave out the rest of the piece.
He also said the coaching staff has to continue to push them and teach them, and teach them until they get it right.
He also said they're only practicing for 1 hour in the afternoon, to give them mental and physical rest for the game. At this point he said it's all mental.

* Running back Javarris James returned to practice off of injury today.
