They remember what you do in November a famous SEC coach once said and as November ensues only 11 worthy teams remain in the running for the two Shortlist to the San Fernando Valley invitations to be handed out and they rank in worthiness as follows:
Florida, Texas, Alabama, Iowa, TCU, Cincinnati, Boise State, Louisiana State, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Penn State.
For the first time all year, I bat 1.000 as no team on the Shortlist wins a game I called for them to lose or losses a game I called for them to win to be eliminated as a result. Take that Sneaky Pete Carroll, you overpaid, overrated, outlaw program running buffoon. I don't even think the fraud can surf anyways and 2004 is a loooong way in the rear-view mirror now bubba.
There is only one team on the elite Shortlist I expect to lose their way off this weekend:
LSU.
The Tigers face Alabama this weekend in a clash of SEC West supremacy that could mark a shift in power back to the traditional flagship program of the nation's best conference. A win by LSU would set the stage for a wild final month of the regular season as the SEC Championship game would be downgraded from automatic title berth match-up to probable ticket puncher instead as the rest of the unbeaten programs would scramble to fill the possible vacuum a one-loss SEC champion would create at the top of the polls.
To me however, 2009 marks the year where the BCS class division is being shown to wear extremely thin between the power conferences and those schools who exist outside the limelight like TCU and Boise State. Even teams like the Hawkeyes and Bearcats, the former a school not devoid of it's own tradition and prestige historically, have used this year as an illustration that preseason bias and traditional favoritism do not necessarily have a place in the college football championship crowning competition.
When six possible undefeated teams remain in theoretical play for an invite to a dance for only two, the unfortunate bias of supposed "professionals," with agendas completely divorced from the process they are ensured with serving is a major hurdle that must be overcome. But how can a non-premier program tackle an opponent who exits outside the hash-marks and they can't outscore between final guns?
In 2004, the nation crowned an undeserving champion from a weak conference over an undefeated SEC champion and an undefeated Urban Meyer coached team, no split, no discussion, no controversy outside the state of Alabama. Five years later we've seen two loss champions and one loss champions from the SEC where undefeated non-BCS teams could have been tapped to provide upsets not seen since Osborn's, "go for two," went for nothing.
Speaking of the "Miracle in Miami", here is Esteban's "Break It Down" video feature on Miami's ACC match-up with the UVA Cavaliers this week at The Shark:
If any year in college football history was shaping up as a memorable one, it's this one, not for the final coronation of Florida's first and only unbeaten season, but perhaps for something much more memorable instead, a year where a truly shocking team came from out of nowhere to not just play on the same field as the traditional powers, but perhaps to push them aside once and for all from their reserved places at the front of the line just because that's where they've always been allowed to start. It will still take a dose of luck and an upset or two in the most unlikeliest of places to come to pass, but then again, what memorable college football champion hasn't used some of that on their way to the top?
Join me here next week as the Shortlist narrows itself down to two handfuls of contenders as the final month brings us ever closer to the ultimate prize here on the Shortlist to the San Fernandon Valley.

Also, anyone WORRIED about that?

321 - To respond to your comments:
1) I think that the comments about Swasey are unfair for two reasons: 1) we are looking at freshman and sophmores and there size versus juniors and seniors for some team 2) $$$ is now important in conditioning for supplements and nutrition and we don't have it, so Swasey is working at a disadvantage
2) I would like to see some new things in the offense but this is a pro-style offense so if we go to 4 WR and the gun we stray from that
3) Very fair point and I agree
4) Clements I think you might be off since it was the kid who said it (who other than sticking it to GA really has nothing to gain by saying it despite that) and with Ego that is distrubing if true as I think that is a kid we want. We have to trust the coaches because at the end of the day, they are the only ones who know the real truth and situation with every kid

Solar,
I've wondered about that...is the number 2 ACC team always the runner up in the title game or do they go by BCS ranks, or do the bowls get to pick?
Posted by: Texascane | November 06, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Wasn't it GT and LSU last year?
VT won the ACC but GT went to the Chick Fil A ahead of Boston College...the runner up.
Posted by: Texascane | November 06, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Good job, Esteban!
Posted by: JSQ | November 06, 2009 at 10:18 AM

JSQ...no problem, glad I was around the blog to help out. I doubt anybody here would use the info but U should call the UM ticket office and change your account info just to be safe.
I'm definitely getting some breakfast food from Too Jays for tailgating: Bagels/cream cheese, muffin tops, danish, etc.
See U at 10 AM...

Very much a blonde moment.
See you tomorrow! Thanks for contributing something!
Oh, and, if anyone wants to challenge me to a jello shot contest, they need to arrive at 6am to the RV lot. I don't compete with amateurs.

Bowl Games...
What pisses me off, is that even if we run the the table playing low to mediocre teams... Who ever we play in a bowl game is going to be a huge challenge, given the injured list.
Playing a top 20 team with half a team in a bowl game is like giving 10 points... before kick off and then expecting the number two's to fill the gap with no let off... Not happening!
Do I blame Randy?... yes. He should have seen it 6 weeks ago. You know damn well that half these guys got hurt during practice, doing two-a-days... trying to prove to the coaches they were worthy of starting and once choosen, there was no way in hell they would tell someone they were hurt before a game.
Hopefully Randy learns from this year and Coaches smarter to win next year.
And before all you Jocks go crazy... I'm not saying to powder their azz and tuck them in... Just saying, too much of anything isn't always best in the long run.
Finding the right balance is the key!
Posted by: Cat 5 Cane | November 06, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Cat5, at least we get a month to heal up leading up to the bowl game.
Posted by: Esteban | November 06, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I played at every level of football except the NFL (still holding out hope... J/K!)
We always tackled in practice, except on days you had shells (Helmets and shoulder pads only)...
So I dunno.. I am curious about us always being so beat up. Just not sure it is tackling.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | November 06, 2009 at 11:26 AM
este,
sweet brudda,
I look for one of our linebackers to get a pick this week, maybe Cmac. Simpson Burd and Hall all average about 30 yds receiving a game. I think Sewell will stay short all game and get picked off.

Just got off a conference call. Glad you picked up on it.
The weird thing is I was getting ready to do the exact same thing myself, I had it ready to paste. Then I looked at Mary's message and said "oh sh*t", so if you hadn't done it for her you would have had to do it for me.
86 - thanks for being on top of things and also say hello to MiamiMike & RandyCane - remember I came up & said hello to you in line at the Clemson game (I was with my daughter)

Posted by: SOUP | November 06, 2009 at 11:43 AM
how many of the guys who are on the injured list were healthy at the beginning of the year? just curious as to how many guys got hurt in the spring or summer and just ended up aggravating things once the season started. guys like fortson/moncur.
