As any respectable college student-athlete would know, well with the possible exception of those at West Virginia, USC, Tennessee or Florida State, biology experiments are often conducted in a petri dish.
Well it appears that University of Miami head coach Randy Shannon has decided to conduct an experiment of his own by hiring Rick Petri to be the Hurricanes next defensive line coach.
Petri comes to UM from the University of Kentucky to replace the recently departed DL Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Clint Hurtt. Hurtt has moved on to Louisville to join former Florida Gators' Defensive Coordinator Charlie Strong, who as you already know by now, was recently hired for the Head Coaching job with the Cardinals.
Petri coached at Miami for three seasons with the Hurricanes from 1993-95 . While with the Hurricanes, Petri coached three future NFL first-round draft choices: Warren Sapp (Tampa Bay, 1995), Kenard Lang (Washington, 1997), and Kenny Holmes (Houston, 1997).
Sapp was selected to several Pro Bowls and was the 1999 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Lang played in the NFL for nine years with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins. Holmes' time in the NFLU included stints with the Tennessee Titans and the New York Giants.
Petri's 29 years of experience includes experience as a defensive line coach with stops at Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech, Miami, South Carolina and Kentucky. At Miami, Petri will take over a defensive unit that returns 11 players with significant playing experience, including 2009 first team All-ACC performer Allen "Manimal" Bailey.
We predict singnificant improvements along the DL for Miami in Petri's first season. If so, the Hurricane defense may turn into a force to be reckoned with and feared once again.
Yeah, we like that idea!
first!

SENIOR BOWL... Former Miami Hurricanes tight end Jimmy Graham's gamble paying off
Jimmy Graham took a risk when he gave up basketball for football at UM. Now he is projected to go in the NFL Draft.
BY JOSEPH GOODMAN
[email protected]
MOBILE -- Jimmy Graham's decision to quit basketball last year and take a chance on football is beginning to look like sound judgment.
Few NFL prospects competing in the Senior Bowl this Saturday have potentially more to gain with a strong performance than Graham, the 6-7, 258-pound tight end who played just one season for coach Randy Shannon and the Miami Hurricanes. Graham already has met with representatives from nearly every NFL team this week and his draft stock appears to be rising after each practice at Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
``I like what I've seen out of him,'' Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. ``He's a good prospect, without a doubt. This will be a great experience for him this week.''
Sparano and the Dolphins' coaching staff are instructing the Senior Bowl's South team, which includes Graham and former Hurricanes inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton. Kickoff is 4 p.m. Saturday on NFL Network.
Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is the fan favorite in Mobile, but lesser-known players such as Graham have received plenty of attention from NFL scouts, coaches and executives this week. Graham is currently being projected as a mid-round selection for April's NFL Draft.
``I feel like I've got my best years ahead of me and I've just kind of scratched the surface and just learning things,'' Graham said. ``I accomplished a little bit this year but hopefully I'll have an opportunity to accomplish a lot more at the next level. I want to play football for the next 15 years.''
GREAT POTENTIAL
Graham said on Wednesday that he has a one-on-one interview scheduled later this week with Dolphins' general manager Jeff Ireland.
Graham's potential and athleticism are obvious. The former Hurricanes basketball player has the pass-catching skills that every team in the NFL craves. He is the tallest player in the Senior Bowl and is beginning to draw comparisons to NFL tight ends Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez.
``I've been told I've got great hands and can get vertical and catch touchdowns,'' Graham said. ``I've been pretty busy the last couple days. Kind of coming from nowhere, people have a lot of questions.''
Graham has already met with a few general managers this week. He described the interviews as ``serious business'' but good experiences for the upcoming NFL Combine, when everything about Graham's personality will be scrutinized and analyzed. The one question everyone asked Graham this week: Why did you quit basketball?
``I tell them [football] was my first love and I turned down six figures overseas to play basketball,'' Graham said. ``I did that because I didn't want to go through the rest of my life saying what if. The `what if' turned into an `I can' and it's been a great experience.''
RISK BECOMES REWARD... continue

C1, somehow this doesn't surprise me. haha
Too much crazy shyt happening that you can't see until it happens to you in deep water, right?? I'm not much of a swimmer, yet.
I won't ski, though, because everyone I know who has ever skied has broken some bone-ligament combination and I love to do too many other things with my bones and ligaments.
Besides, mountains are sacred ground to me.
Cross-country skiing is another matter. I plan to enjoy that thoroughly. Along with moose and elk hunting on horseback of course.

Heather Dimwits just says shyt just to justify her job. Why not do some research into Petri, or maybe interview some of his former players and actually do some WORK. lol

HOpefully Travis Williams is talking him up if they just met Uncle Luke...
I think this could be the perfect weekend. I think we really need to get some commits there though.
Once they get back and the dust settles playing away from momma will be tough.

CAV I know you are not getting roused up over Heather.
She is the local dimwit and affirmative action 101 for women at ESPN.
She is clueless....
I love a woman who knows sports, but when somebody should clear not being doing a job and are only doing it because of their gender, race, religion, or w/e it is annoying.
She is case A++++

I thought Whitaker was mostly a lock for Auburn and just getting some vacation time in, but if there was also a recent home visit by us there might be a glimmer of hope.
I heard Dorsey on WQAM a few d/a, and he made it clear he'd like to ultimately get into coaching, speaking of some advantages and disadvantages of different levels (pro-attitudes vs. college-need to recruit).

We will be getting there at setting up around 2pm. I'm not sure exactly where we are going to be. The crew I am with usually tailgates around E 22 so we are going to aim for that, but who knows where we will get directed.
If you want to post your e-mail on here or send it to Soup to relay to me, we can exchange contact info and I can text you our "coordinates" when we arrive! Same goes for other Canespacers who are going to the Pro Bowl!

DATcane, loved that article on Sharpton, just goes to show that size is overrated sometimes, it's more in how fast you diagnose the play and getting from point A to point B RIGHT NOW!
I think if you ask any O-Lineman, what's more intimidating... size, or movement, they would probably say the latter...

So why shouldn't FSU???
It is stupid but look at UF... So why shouldn't FSU do the same, and just keep UF at the end of the schedule.
I wouldn't be suprised if we were put into something similar by Hocutt. I hope not, b/c I love games like UM vs OSU... That is insane.
UF just figures they will get that but with a BSC game... So far they unfortunately have not been wrong. (OOOOOh ya the big bad SEC hahahhaah JOKE)
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 29, 2010 at 06:08 AM
FSU played 2 Division II schools in 2008. This isn't new news about FSU fluffling their schedule. Bobby turned yellow long before he hit the door.

Sharpton has some good physical tools but his mental game is horseshyte.
Hope he lands somewhere in the league but he will get eaten alive there.

Canez1, we will do a jello shot in your honor.
I hear you on the vacation thing. I'm planning them like crazy to distract myself from off-season depression. Going to Mardi Gras (never been before!) in a couple of weeks, Vegas the next month, back to NOLA for Easter, then Barcelona, and NYC for Memorial Day or 4th of July weekend. Hoping to squeeze a trip to the Keys in there somewhere too. That gets me through the really rough months of the off-season. By mid-July it will be time to plan the 3rd annual football kickoff event for the PBCC and SERIOUSLY plan the tailgate menus (not that I already have new recipes printed out for the FAMU game because that would be . . . um, crazy).
Sidenote: Sebastian is going to be PI$$SED with all this travel. At least he has a girlfriend at Very Important Paws.
