This article was written for Canespace by Randy Bradley (RandyCane)...
We all know many of the more famous or more recent names. Players like Mira, Hendricks, Kelly, Kosar, Testaverde, Irvin, Toretta, Barrow. Coaches named Schnellenberger and Johnson.
Yet, how many die hard Canes fans know what former Miami Head coach, now in the UM Hall of Fame , was also the Head Coach at Virginia Tech for four years? How many of us know who the “Gator Hater,” was? And what are his connections to the U?
We all know who three time All-American Ted Hendricks is but how many of us know who two-time All American Bill Miller is? What is their connection to the Gator Hater? How many of us are familiar with the U’s thrilling win in the 1946 Orange Bowl, a game won by the U on a 89 yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired.
Who is Don James and what is his connection with two different National Champions, in the same year and the same sport? Who knows who were the first father-son combo to play for the Canes and what did they accomplish? Both are now in the U’s Hall of fame. Who scored three touchdowns in the U’s first ever win over the hated Gators? What football star organized and coached the U’s first baseball team?
All these answers and more can be found at the Tom Kearns Sports Hall of Fame located on the Coral Gables campus next door to the Hecht Athletic center. The Kearns Hall of Fame was started by it’s namesake in order to preserve the memorabilia and the memory of the great athletic accomplishments of UM administrators, coaches and athletes while at the University of Miami.
You will find over 80 years of Hurricane sports for ever enshrined in the U’s Hall of Fame. Many current Hurricane fans will be surprised at the number of All Americans the U developed not only in football but in other sports as well. Equally surprising are the many bowl games that have been participated in and the outstanding play by Hurricane athletes who played in those games.
Miami’s 1950 team finished the season undefeated only to lose to Clemson in the Orange Bowl by a 15-14 score, Miami got revenge in the 1951 Gator Bowl by upsetting highly ranked Clemson 14-0 (when playing in the Gator Bowl meant something!). How many of us knew this was the first back to back bowl game appearances for the U.
How many of us know what the ‘Seminole War Canoe’ symbolizes for the Canes and Gators? When the Canes and Gators played annually (what a concept!) it was the trophy claimed by the winning team.
Other great athletes in Basketball such as Rick Barry, Wayne Beckner and Dick Hickox are enshrined in the Hall. Baseball greats like Mike Pagliarulo and Rick Rather are enshrined (Yankees) . You can view the Sears Trophies, two Heismans, won by Testaverde and Toretta, and all of the Bowl trophies.
There are histories on all the storied Hurricane teams and individual stars, both men and women who will be forever remembered on the Hurricane athletic stage. Men and women athletes in Tennis, diving and Track and field are memorialized in the Hall, preserving a rich athletic tradition.
The Hall of Fame although affiliated with the University of Miami, is an independent, not for profit organization and survives on donations and fund raising activities. For Hurricane fans young and old, It is a must visit. It is a time to remember and celebrate the past and to look forward to the future.
What was especially interesting to me while doing the research for this article was that, I discovered my next door neighbor while growing up in Miami, has been elected to the Hall in this years class (2010) . Jim Cox played his high school ball at Christopher Columbus In Miami and played for the Canes from 65-67. He later went on to play TE for the Dolphins.
I will always remember the catch and long run for a touchdown that he made in a thrilling 28-21 win over visiting LSU when he played for the Canes. I will also remember some great backyard games we had in those days too.
To Tom Kearns and the Hall of Fame Directors: Thanks for the Memories. We will remember U!
Trivia Answers:
Andy Gustafson coached four years at Virginia Tech. He was 22-13-1 at Va. Tech and 93-65-3 at the U. He was also the longest tenured coach at the U, coaching for 16 years.
Walt Kichefski, played from 37-39, drafted by the Steelers, coached D-Line at the U, interim Head Coach and Athletic Director and coached both Bill Miller and Ted Hendricks and others who went on to become All Americans at the U and are now in the Hall of Fame. He became known as: "The Gator Hater.”
Bill Miller, two time All American receiver at the U, was drafted by and played for the Raiders and played in a Super Bowl with the Raiders
The Orange Bowl originally known as the Palm Bowl and called Burdines Stadium, provided a thrilling finish in 1946 when University of Miami defensive -back, Al Hudson, intercepted a pass on the last play of the game and returned it 89 yards for the winning score. That team coached by Jack Harding finished 9-1-1.
Miami’s 1956 team was invited to play in the Sugar Bowl but couldn’t participate because of probation. They finished 6th in both polls.
Eddie Dunn and his two sons played for the Canes. Eddie Dunn (seen above) scored three touchdowns in UM’s first ever win over the Gators in 1938. Eddie Dunn also organized and coached the first baseball team at the U in 1946. Was HC in 43 and 44, inducted into the Ring of Honor in 2009 and also served on the Board of Trustees. Eddie and his son, Gary (seen below) are both in the U’s Hall of Fame. Gary Dunn played professionally for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Don James a Hurricane great at QB and Hurricane Alumni, was Head Coach of the Washington Huskies who shared a National Title with the Canes in 1991. He also coached at FSU. Michigan, Colorado and Kent State. Inducted into Iron Arrow and won other academic honors at the U .

Finally got some time to take a quick scan today. Gotta give kudos to Aqua for getting my trivia question right and then finding I was off by two years for the true first Cane drafted.
Found a good list for Canes drafted over the years:

So Newberg thinks both Christian Jones and C. Lemonier end up in Tally, eh? I say this would be no big surprise with Jones, as we'd all likely guess this given his family roots. For Lemonier I wouldn't be so sure, but also wouldn't be surprised. He also noted that Ferguson is hard to tell because he doesn't do these interviews. I have to respect a kid who stays away from this crap, regardless of how much I love following recruiting. I'd rather simply find out on 2/3 and avoid all the crap and games along the way.

So have any of you seen the new firecoachshannon.com site? You can't even leave a post but you can send an email to the site admin. Here's what I wrote to him.
I remember when Jimmy Johnson was hired some dumb focks were calling for his head after his 1st season. Yes even the great Jimmy Johnson lost a bunch of games his 1st year. I remember when Dennis Erickson took over some more of those dumb focks were calling for his head. I also remember when Butch took over and the dumb focks wasted their time, energy and personal finances to fly banners around the Orange Bowl asking for Butch to be fired. Then Coker was hired and those dumb focks loved him.
Well now here we are with a coach who is trying to rebuild our program after Coker wrapped the ferrari around a tree who has improved our record every year and here the dumb focks are again.
Congrats! You are upholding the dumb fock legacy. I bet you probably have a screen name like True Cane or some stupid bullshyte like that.
Those dumb focks who wanted Jimmy Johnson fired were the same dumb focks who were crying when he left for greener pastors because Jimmy couldn't stand the dumb focks. Butch built one of the greatest college football teams EVER. Not just a good team by Miami standards but one of the best college football teams EVER. The dumb focks were crying when he left. Oh wait, I mean Butch left because he couldn't stand the dumb focks.
So Randy had a team go 9-4 this year with a roster of 53 true sophomores and freshmen but let me guess, we're Miami dog and we don't except this shyte dog?
I can't wait for history to repeat itself like it always does so you can finally figure out you're a dumb fock.
Real classy site. I bet you thought you were being original when you made this. You just used a new technology that the old dumb focks didn't have back in the day.

Hey Dayton:
The ladies look like a very solid young team with one really good young ballplayer, Riquna Williams. After coming off of two straight tough losses, to Duke and Wake Forest, they didn't fold in Maryland tonight, in spite of the Terps' 48 game (almost 2 years) home winning streak. Williams hit two 3 pointers in the final minute, including one for the 3 point win with fewer than 3 seconds left. She will be a name to follow. After beating FSU and Maryland, this team should be among the top 4-6 in the ACC.
Now, all of this is well and good, but I'd still rather watch the men's team actually play good fundamental basketball for 2 consecutive halves.

Jcane do u kno what Shirley had to say bout his in home visit wth Shannon?
Posted by: Nashvillecane | January 21, 2010 at 11:47 PM
I think the recruiting game should be changed.
1. There should be an early signing period.
2. Kids should only be allowed to take one visit to a schoool, official or unofficial not mattering.
3. The visit should be provided by an admin of the school not a football team member or the coaches and should be purely academic aside from visiting the football facilities. (All contacts with the coaches will be through the phone and the one visit the coach is allowed to make to the athlete)
5. The kid should not stay at the campus while visiting, he should stay at a hotel.
6. No lavishly indulging the kid, he should be provided a set amount like 50 dollars per day for the 2 day weekend. Or w/e something that can be similar for all schools. Nice Universities shouldn't be wining and dining these kids at expensive dining spots. (This should not be what the trip or their choice in an education institution is about)
7. Women should not be used in anyway, if he meets students on his visits or tours that is completely differnet than having a football player being greeted by a squad of chearleeders or the pep team. (It is salacious and deceiving.)
8. Coaches should only be able to contact a student athlete once a week maximum and all contact should be documented through an NCAA monitoring tool. The coaches should provide the contact time, date, form of contact (i.e. phone, email,), provide the athletes # or email. This way all contact can be monitored and if there is proven contact outside of what is recorded that coach should be punished accordingly.
9. Kids should not be allowed to do interviews or discuss their recruitment with these sites about what schools they are liking or w/e until after they have signed there letter of commitment.
10. Kids should be able to reach out to one member of the university, not a coaching staff member if they want to inquire about basic information on the school, so they can get actual facts. Not falsified information from the coaching staff.
11. Offers should be verified by the NCAA, once an offer is decided upon by the staff and to be issued; all overs should go through the NCAA to the student. This way a student or a university can't use another university by falsely stating they provided an offer.
12. Student-atheletes should be provided a certain amount of money for additional food, clothing, and to hang out. Not a large amount, maybe a couple hundred a month. This would eliminate some of the need for athletes to be given ($$$) by Universitys under the table. i.e. Reggie Bush or The kid from Clemson.
13. Boosters or Alumni should not be allowed to have contacts with athletes during the recruiting process.
14. That along with the NCAA actually enforcing the other rules and policies they have with STRICTER guidelines.
NOW I KNOW NONE OF THIS WILL HAPPEN.... BUT I WISH IT WOULD>

Posted by: 86Cane | January 21, 2010 at 11:55 PM
JCane i forgot they actually lost to Duke. but at least they can play fundamentally sound.
i didn't expect them to make much noise this year anyway with us being so young. but i do expect them to know how to run their offense late in the game.
Collins doesn't demand the ball enough. Dequan still has no offensive game. our backup bigs don't contribute at all when their in the game. the most consistent players are Grant, Dews, and Thomas.
judging by how lost they look on offense sometimes i think they should look for a new offensive assistant. the teaching just isn't good enough.

Anybody want to hook me up with the login so I can access the UM 360 replays.
I'm willing to eat crow if I don't see what I saw for the Wake and UW games on Trump. . .
I'm still adament about what I saw for those games especially the Wake game... I even did a play by play with the sets and formations.
but I want to be fair and review more games... Instead of making a stupid blanket statement on only two games in a 13 game season.
and Dayton I apoogize for getting testy, but nobody here can question my football knowledge. Now my research background possibly, since it was two games out of a long season. BUt I know football, I meant no offense to you, but I've played since I was 7 up to college. Coached a couple years in high school, and watch it religiously.
I can be quick to pass judgement but I know football.
So I want to be honest and come back if the other games are different.

How does the "quality control assistant" work with regard to numbers of coaches(7) allowed at an institution?
Posted by: Texascane | January 22, 2010 at 12:11 AM
Texas how does that make sense.
I mean he will be working with the QB's and throwing??? What is his exact role?
How much time can he spend with athletes and/or recruits.
Is that the same as our NFL players coming and working out with the kids? Or really different because NONE of them receive pay checks from teh University of Miani??
UF/OK/ALA are all doing this. . . Bringing on lots of staff who are not officially part of the 7 staff members.. Another grey area the NCAA lets slide b/c of the MONEY MONEY MONEY they are making. The NCAA is worse than the GOVERNMENT.. Crooked!

86: Funny. Good combo. of the old sitcom and Airplane humor. Surely, you won't make too many more of those jokes or you might think you're Ethel Merman...yada, yada.
Nash: Shirley said all of the usual stuff without saying much of anything. It was a great visit with Barrow and Shannon, they spoke of helping prepare men for the future, etc.....and that he's a bit over 50% about whether he'll take a visit to the U, won't announce his commit plan til NSD....all per Rivals.
From ESPN I saw a mention of a big Texas TE for 2011, Chris Barnett, mentioning the U among his top five, for those who want to worry about him for a whole year!

Sorry I missed U at the bowl game. Turned out to be a bit of a drag for me.
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 22, 2010 at 12:34 AM
Big time agree with you on that, Dayton. The offense has been lacking fundamentally for years, and as such, clearly not playing to where their potential has been. They may have more talent on the court this year than they've had in years, but it looks like they're wasting it without proper offensive team/individual skill development. If Haith doesn't bring in the right asst. I think he's going to be out of a job before long, unless the U is satisfied with where they're at (which I don't think will be the case if they lose 3/4 of the way out).
Gotta get some sleep. Have a good one all.

Esteban - I only saw that game in person for one half.....
Rewatch the Wake game...
Now do u have access to ESPN 360? I can explain what I'm talking about. THe only game I have on DVR is the WAKE game and it was bad.
LIke I was saying I have the play by play with formations.
And the whole line was atrocious for the Wisc. game. Trump playing ok is like being the worlds tallest midget.
Again, I'm willing to admit if I'm wrong. I'm just asking to be able to prove it or say.... NO I"M WRONG!
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 22, 2010 at 01:30 AM
CSM, pipho made the whole line look bad. One piece fails n whole thing crumbles. Individually the rest weren't doing bad. Missed blocks by the TEs n RBs really hurt in that game too.
Posted by: Esteban | January 22, 2010 at 01:34 AM
Hey CSM!
Yeah man I was wondering what happened to you but I figured you caught in all that traffic.
You guys need to quit worrying about Pipho. He's gone and a bigger stronger badder mofo is going to take his place.
I fully expect our O-line to be upgraded next year.

Monopoly money...
Florida Marlins' Josh Johnson finalizes $39 million deal.
The Marlins secured ace Josh Johnson with a four-year, $39 million contract -- the richest ever for a Marlins pitcher. 'I wanted to stay,' Johnson said. 'I love the organization.'
Damnnn, I would too!!!
I'm sorry, but I'm so sick of seeing contracts like this and much, much, much more for playing a sport that you love.
We're talking sports here... not a new and improved way of brain surgery or robotic medicine... Geeeezz
Was reading something to the fact that there are so many old players struggling just to pay bills... there should be some sort of a retirement fund that the players contribute to... Say 30k annually,...
Hell, that's treated as less then piss-away money by most players and it's a tax write off to boot!
Monopoly quic-math
50 players x 32 teams x 30k = $48,000,000.00.
Seems only right.

A little morning reading to go with your mimosas and eggs benedict.
According to the Wall Street Journal, there are about 185 minutes in an NFL game broadcast.
One hour are commercials
As much as 75 minutes are players, huddling or standing around.
17 minutes of replays
11 minutes of action
3 seconds of cheerleaders

I was just thinking about Seantrel Henderson. I still see this as a long shot but I think we LEGIT have a shot at this kid. I think the VISIT will be KEY. He has to have an INCREDIBLE visit. He said he just wants an opportunity really compete for a job. At his other finalists with the exception of ND there doesn't seem to be any open spots along the OL to compete. Our RT spot is WIDE OPEN. Also I know he wants to eventually play LT and for that matter our LT spot is manned by a senior who will get drafted to play in the NFL. Its a good situation for him to come in and get on the field.
Sorta reminds me of Vaughn Telemaque who was also a long shot. BUT with a great visit and with Kenny Phillips leaving, he saw a chance for playing time and that ended up tipping the scale in our favor after he had a GREAT visit.
Next weekeneds visit will be KEY in locking up anyone we don't already have on-board. Good that so many pros from The U will be back and you'd have to think they'll get a chance to meet some of those guys.
We'll see.

86 - your thoughts on Manny's comments re: the basketball team. I think you've said some similar things. I just don't get the substitution pattern and lack of play execution either...and why does he take the hot hand out. The other night Reggie Johnson was getting in a wicked rhythm and Haith pulls him???
Mandingo quotes:
" In their opinions, while UM coach Frank Haith has done an excellent job recruiting talent to Miami, he needs to find more help in terms of X's and O's. "Everyone knows Frank can recruit, but just like Leonard Hamilton needed to go out and get him a Stan Jones, Frank needs to do the same," one coach said. "Once Leonard got Stan, UM really started winning. What I see now is a lot of confusion."
The other criticism: Substitutions. "It kills me to see him yank guys like clockwork," another coach said. "At the four minute mark every game, he gives his starters a blow. Why? Post guys like [Dwayne] Collins need to feel the ball, need to get into a flow. He needs to go with his best guys more often." "
