This article was written for Canespace by blogger "Loco"...
It’s no longer football season and since the UM basketball team has once again "fallen and can't get up" against ACC competition it must be it’s time to talk about recruiting. What else is a Miami fan to do in the middle of a "Nuclear Winter"?
After the Champs Bowl game, there were unconfirmed reports that "the sky is falling" as far south as Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Here at the ‘Space, which is unaffected by anything falling due to its weightless nature, we are focused on anything that will "lift everybody’s spirits"!
OK, that’s enough of the stupid puns and one-liners, since they aren’t funny anyway. We’re going to play a game called “guess which blogger the quote is referring to.” We’re also going to play “find a shorter name for this game”, but that’s another story.
First off, here are some rules:
1. There will be a well-known* movie/TV quote or music lyric, followed by the movie/show/song/artist
2. Each quote is pertaining to how I feel most bloggers may think of a particular longtime or well-known blogger when they see their name or what they’ve written.
3. It is also possible that a quote pertains to something a blogger would say, or what you may say in response to them.
4. This is a free response, fill in the blank kind of deal
5. Quotes may be altered slightly for use, but the majority of it will be there. Sometimes there is a little more of the quote than necessary, for the fun of it
6. All of these are in good fun, so don’t get offended if you feel like one pertains to you (because chances are it may) or if other bloggers guess that it may pertain to you
7. If you and the others don’t think one pertains to you, it may not. It is not easy get quotes for everybody, and they don’t pay me enough to spend THAT much time :-P
8. There isn’t one for me, so feel free to make one up for me
*Well-known means known by me. And has been shown or played nationally at some point (though I’ll be honest, most quotes should be fairly well known as most shows/movies/songs are).

Wow. I came over to post a link to my blog and notched a FIRST! Do I get a free t-shirt or something?
Anyway, check out my blog on Ivan McCartney. Other people might not be able to get the latest from McCartney, but I got the kid last week and his coach on the latest.

Bastard! Now U win a Canespace T-shirt! Oh, what's that? U already have one?
How about a Sean Taylor commemorative shirt instead? I'll mail it to the Miami Herald address.

I am going to run. I've been working all night on the phone and if I don't spend time with the wife, I'm toast. I might check back in later. If not, enjoy the podcasts. I'll throw one up with Kevin Nelson tomorrow. He was great tonight.
By the way, for those wondering why I was "giggling" when Blustein and I were talking about the Canes and acting as if my tone wasn't similar to the blog (FINDING GEMS NO EASY TASK FOR CANES). I don't know why people are coming off as if I was ripping the program. I was simply presenting facts. My buddies were ripping the class because it had too many three-star recruits or less. So, I did some homework and presented the facts. Just because history says Miami hasn't had a ton of success with three star recruits doesn't mean that will be the case in the future.
Shannon has made it clear to his assistants this year to make good evaluations and find players that can help the team. A big emphasis has been put on size and projects because most of the kids Miami is getting in this class won't need to play for one or two years. They can all be coached up. Now, like I said, will they be coached up? We'll have to see. But I've never ripped this class or criticized it because of the star ratings. I've simply said I've been disappointed somewhat because the Canes have lost out a few local kids (Corey Lemonier, etc.) they would have gotten in the past.
I'm out.

Q: Manny...the fans were asking about WR McCartney and OL Henderson? What's the good word? Posted by: 86Cane | January 26, 2010 at 10:57 PM
A: I haven't been able to reach Henderson's coach. But I read what Shandel and Canesport wrote. I've always felt the kid was a longshot from conversations with folks in the know. History agrees. How many times has UM brought in a big-time kid from the Midwest and landed him. No big deal, really. UM has seven kids and three who could play right away. Henderson would be gravy.
McCartney is the guy to get excited/nervous about. He's a huge get in my opinion because the Canes will be losing quality receivers after next season. McCartney is a talent and could spend a year on the bench before breaking out in 2011. Miami needs him for the near future. I think they've got a 50-50 chance.

DTX...The Space has exceeded everyone's expectations. We are now averaging around 8,000 hits/day and around 300-500 comments per/day. That translates to:
240,000 hits per month and 12,000 comments per month.
And Manny Navarro posting a FIRST?

I'm not a recruiting junkie - prob only person here daily who isn't this time of year. Key to winning championships is on the Line tho. One side needs to be dominant. Once we get there, we'll be champs again.

Shwarm, where does this Shannon favoring seniors stuff keep coming from when he's the same man that bench senior Baraka Atkins in favor of underclassmen Eric Moncur??
Who has he had to play instead of Cook or Joseph?? Forston and AB??? Yeah. lol
The best, most complete player will play.
Next year, for the first time since Shannon's taken over, he'll have real depth and competition at every position, except QB obviously.
So we'll see about this myth of him favoring seniors just because they're seniors.

Question for the legion.
Seven of the 22 new head coaching hires this year are black. Anyone see a Randy Shannon influence or not?
Posted by: Old Skool | January 26, 2010 at 08:53 PM

That influence is called REALITY and MATURITY. I'd say the NFL has more to do with it than Shannon.

Mike Leach has moved his family to Key West...
"After a public and bitter separation from Texas Tech University, former Red Raiders football coach Mike Leach needed a place to live, clear his head and enroll his children in school.
As a frequent visitor to Key West, the coach decided to go ahead and make it official.
Leach, who is still in the process of resolving his Dec. 30 firing from Texas Tech, moved his family to the Southernmost City, a place he almost called home 14 years ago."

DE - Ojomo and Bailey
DT - Regis/Fortson (pending spring) and Joseph (since we know Randy favors the seniors)
Posted by: shwarma | January 26, 2010 at 10:33 PM
>>>>
Shwarm, I don't know that Ojomo is ahead of Vernon. Vernon has as much experience as Ojomo now and he played better than Ojomo if you ask me. With Petri coming in and some more muscle, I can see Vernon becoming seriously dominant next year. M-Rob might be the one in danger of losing the start.
But this is exactly what we want. haha
Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | January 27, 2010 at 12:04 AM
Texas, that could be an interesting situation this time next year. I wonder if he'd still be too hot for Miami to touch though?

Manny, who's to say we would have landed Lemon back in the day? What day?? Coker's azz-kissing days?? Maybe but probably not.
Butch's day, where he wasn't kissing much azz like Shannon isn't??
Aside from the fact that our DE depth is deeper than any other position on the team, who's to say kids won't just want to go somewhere else??
And apparently the U doesn't have much history from Hialeah, something I'm surprised you didn't mention, or maybe you shouldn't for political reasons.

Posted by: Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer | January 26, 2010 at 08:38 PM
it shouldn't take that long in football either.
Posted by: Daytoncane | January 26, 2010 at 08:44 PM

Dayton, yes and no. On the one hand two players can completely transform a basketball team in one year.
In football, you need at least 20, more like 40, and they need to develop physically and mentally to seriously turn around a program, and you have to have the right staff in place. This isn't happening in one year, unless you walked into a situation with some talent already on hand.
Basketball, none of the above.
Now to go deep in March, you need a couple of classes. You need guards who can shoot off the dribble. You need some big guys who can rebound and score some, not necessarily a lot but some. And you need everyone to know how to play defense to some degree. You also need about two or three players off the bench to give you some rest.
This takes some time, and it can be hit and miss.
But for Haith to be steadily REGRESSING is ridiculous. He doesn't have a system for anything it seems.
Just imagine Shannon in Year 6, REGRESSING. It ain't happening unless there's some catastrophe of injuries or something.

I heard that! haha
I was just saying it might be interesting, not that I want Leach as OC of the U but it could be an interesting situation after Whipple departs following an ACC title, Heisman candidate QB and record setting offense.
What I find funny about the whole thing is that Whipple was a COMPLETE UNKNOWN until Shannon got his azz down here. Now he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Could you imagine if we landed both IMac AND Henderson?!?! I'd do cartwheels down the berkeley law hallway!!!
It could happen. Shannon can close on big recruits. He just needs to get that magic of his going, the one that helped him land Arthur Brown in '08 and Ray Ray in '09.
In terms of stars, each year Randy has been able to land at least one 5-star recruit. Hopefully this year won't be any different since it means that Henderson will have joined.
Can't wait until this weekend and most importantly to NSD!
