True or False: College football is big business?
If you answered false you are an idiot.
If you answered true, then congratulations, you have been paying attention.
And by paying attention you already know that if are looking for the sweet spot in college football then being a Head Coach is the place you want to be. Nothing screams out: "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" louder than being a successful head coach in today's ever competitive NCAA environment.
So let's take an in-depth and serious look at the BIG business that is college football. Here are the highest paid head coaches in the NCAA...wait, wait, wait, hold on. What do you say if we first look at what various Universities spend and generate for their athletic departments?
OK,I'm glad you agree. Here they are ranked by revenue for your viewing pleasure:
Alabama: Revenue: 123M / Expenses: 123M
Texas: Revenue 120M / Expenses: 110M
Ohio State University: Revenue 115M / Expenses 114M
Florida: Revenue 106M / Expenses 98M
Oklahoma: Revenue 77M / Expenses 76M
FSU: Revenue 73M / Expenses 65M
Now lets look at the less fortunate and how they compete:
UCF: Revenue 39M / Expenses 38M
USF: Reveniue 35M / Expenses 33M
Private institutions like Miami and Notre Dame are not required to report their financial data.
But we will get to what they pay their coaches very soon. Stay tuned...

I'm kind of thinking we either need someboidy to relace Swasey or somebody to add a strength/nutrition and injury prevention that Swasey doesn't understand.

Manny - who would youw want to be DL coach at UM if you could pick anybody? Who do you think is realistic?
Which recruit do you see making the most impact as a freshmen?
Who do you have as the starting 5 on OL? and the starting MLB spot?
Thanks in advance,
I think your work is great but, I think we can tell you seem a bit frustrated with teh staff at UM at times. Is that true?
Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | January 22, 2010 at 10:52 PM
Texas, this cat sounds and acts an awful lot like Miami coaches, at least Schnell, JJ and Shannon and the culture/expectations are just the same....

"Few small-college teams pass with the skill and daring of Mount Union.
"His system is especially sophisticated and unique to Division III," said Bill Borchert, a four-year starter at quarterback during the 1990s.
Borchert threw for about 600 yards in 1993 as a senior at Holy Name High School in suburban Cleveland. But when placed in Kehres' high-flying system, he passed for 4,035 yards and 55 touchdowns as a junior, and 4,335 yards and 63 touchdowns with only two interceptions as a senior.
Mount Union went unbeaten both years and Borchert was voted NCAA Division III Player of the Year.
If there was a flaw in his college experience, Borchert said, it was that the 10-2 and12-1 seasons he had during his first two years seemed disappointing.
"You hate to say it, but anything less than a national championship is not the Mount way," he said.
Critics of Kehres say he is so accustomed to winning that he is a miserable loser.
Jeff Brown, sports editor of the La Crosse Tribune, says Kehres shoved him after a stinging playoff loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1992. Mount Union amassed more than 600 yards of offense that day and never punted, but lost, 29-24, after turning the ball over seven times.

Interesting, but I'd say they were getting pushed around because none of them RSd. lol
We'll see in the next two years if Swasey is good with mass and strength. I think he is but I need more solid proof with these c/o '08 guys.
That Wisky game was just what we needed to prep for next year if you ask me.

Next week is good. We will follow up..

CSM, I think Swasey and his department might be understaffed and supplied. But still, back in 2000-2001 we looked as big or bigger and strong or stronger than anyone.
Of course there's always room to improve. We'll see because I'm sure Shannon saw the same things.

In her ninth season, Lantagne Welch helped guide the Hurricanes to their second NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hurricanes finished the season with an overall record of 18-13, and finished the ACC slate at 11-9 for a share of fifth place. UM ended the season winning three of its final six matches, and had a strong RPI in the low 40s at year's end.
Taylor Hollins (Long Beach, Calif.) is a 5-9, outside hitter from Lakewood High School. The powerful player was a four-year starter for Lakewood HS, where she her team to the 2007 Division I state title. She was named three times to the California Press Telegram Dream Team from 2007-09. During that same span, she was three times a nominee for the Lakewood Young Hall of Fame.
"Taylor comes to Miami as an extremely accomplished outside hitter," said Lantagne Welch. "She's the type of player that can fool you when you see her - as she's smaller in stature, but she more than makes up for it in athletic and leaping ability. She is a point scorer - meaning she can get kills anywhere on the court, and she is also deceptive with her attack."
THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO HEAR!

For Buxton I'm not sure if it was just his grades or his senior performance, but I hope he gets things sorted out in fairness to him.
I saw Wilder gave his list of a top 4 for 2011, including the U along with USC, UTenn and UF (ESPN/ITU). Hmmm. Have the last three been in the news lately regarding coach issues?
DT Werner from a CT school, a guy originally from Germany whom I discussed a few times over the last few weeks, sounds like he probably won't do his visit here and I guess he'll end up at FSU (along with his TE hs teammated, W. Tye).
There were rumors I had seen over the last few days of McCartney having finally covered requirements. If this is the case, Ferman's comments about him going to the U may hold more water. As for C. Lemonier it appears that the kid wants to announce completely on his own terms per Ferman. Since many who wait until 2/3 still discuss their plans with the school of choice, it may be that Shannon doesn't feel like dealing with these games after Bryce Brown last year (these Lemonier thoughts are the general gestalt of Ferman's).
I'll be very curious to see what happens this weekend with Palardy.

Cory Nelms, who just last week tied the school’s second-fastest time in 60m dash at 6.81 seconds, will look to replicate that performance in Champaign. Devon Hill, an ACC scorer in the 60m hurdles last year will compete in that event this weekend.

SOUP - I thought u were heading out??
Posted by: raizecane | January 22, 2010 at 11:32 PM
No Manny???? This blog sucks! And CAV, you were conversing with Kehoe's Steamer on the last blog. Dude was doing his "Disgruntled Cane Fan" schtick on U!
I think the recruiting rankings are about as accurate as the mythical HS National Champion. Look no further than Boise, Utah, Louisville, Cinn., and so on. Are ay of those schools even in the top 25 of the final rankings? They are certainly in the top 25 of the BCS rankings!
UF has had a top 25 recruiting class for over 100 years, and they have never managed to go undefeated once! Hell Alabama did it this year, again!
There's no doubt that the "fence" has been breached, but so has the "fence" around Tampa, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Georgia, California, Texas, etc., etc., etc....
5 wins in 2007
7 wins in 2008
9 wins in 2009
11 or 12 wins in 2010? ACC? NC? All VERY possible!
UM has been to places the "Big 2" will never encounter. Anything else we accomplish is just gravy in my humble opinion.
Didn't you all enjoy watching your Gator friends writh in agony as they let the biggest game in state history slip through their grasp..... again??? Those fools are spending almost $100,000,000.00 a year for those contrived titles and their annual "letdown" game!
And now we have to watch Tebow and his Mommy stump for a right wing religious fanatic during the SuperBowl? What up with that???? Abortion?? R U kidding me?
If Meyer can't handle one loss without losing his mind, then UF better have a straight jacket ready for next season! His #1 recruiting class is going to hand him at least 3-4 losses next season.
I wish we had won more games this year, but I understand why we didn't.
And if Randy and Co. are happy with the incoming class, then so am I.
Go 'canes!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | January 22, 2010 at 11:33 PM
One things for sure, signing day is right around the corner, which means, all the guess work is almost outta the picture, gotta sign somewhere at some point, tick tock, tick tock. This class makes me proud and is a real UM type recruiting class, not worried about what other people are thinking about the players committed, and the players committed are just a bunch of hungary guys with flames geting lit, being pissed off that the lack of respect.
When i see a player like cain(alway feels good to have a plaer named Cane on the team, irregardless of how it's spelt).
People wondering now who we'll get to replace buxton, as i recall i remember someone saying ricardo allen is still out their.
Also, one the main things i'm looking at, how are our tight-ends blocking, they didn't do to good in that department consistently i wonder who's coaching their blocking techniques.
Posted by: Calvin | January 22, 2010 at 11:35 PM
What else i also like, this class is already made, no 1 player is going to make or break this class unless everybody decommitts and sign elsewhere. Other than that, you can either come ride with us, work hard and watch the wins roll in, cause it's almost time to get back to where we're suppose to be.
I luv that shannon tells players next year he's going to go and recruit a guy to replace them, cause come this year, or any year, if i'm goign into my junior or sophmore year, i'm going to teach the next man behind everything i know so when i leave he can continue to carry on the tradition, but i'll be dayum if i'm letting somebody come in and take my spot, he's going to have to be a future hall of famer in order to do that.
It's not about starting, it's about dominating the other team, some players get satisfied because they got named the starter, after u get named as the starter that's just the beginning. Going to be real interesting who the starting defensive ends are come next year.
