Opening night of baseball season is always special.
The sound of the PING of aluminum bats. The roar of the crowd. The taste of hot dogs with mustard.
The constant yell of the world renowned vendor known as the "Elephant Man" in the stands: "Popcorn, peanuts, cracker jacks and sunflower seeds."
Baseball season is back! And while this may not excite some of you Hurricane fans, let me tell you that you just don't know what you are missing. You do not have to love baseball to have a good night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
I am here to tell you that University of Miami baseball is where it is at.
On opening night 2010 I joined 3,827 other Hurricans fans in saying so.
From the pre-game celebration at The Titanic with Canespacers and other UM fans to the walk over to the stadium to seeing the orange clay and the green grass of the baseball diamond the event is special.
Going to a game on the UM campus in Coral Gables is a unique experience in an environment that every 'Canes fan should have the opportunity to enjoy during their lives. From the random screams of "RAG ARM" at opposing pitchers to the well rehearsed calls from the crowd of "BALL TWO, WHOOO" it is a fun, informal, family oriented atmposphere that is simply a blast to be part of.
On this opening night of the 2010 season, Miami pitched well and pounded the ball while spanking Rutgers like a misbehaving child at Chucky Cheese. Using that analogy, the Hurricanes' hammering of the Scarlet Knights' pitching staff bordered on child abuse. Thank goodness these were college students and not children experiencing this beat down in 305 town.
And also be glad that The Maniac and blogger Cat5 were in attendance to keep things under control.
Miami trounced Rutgers 12-1 on opening night as though it was just for fun. The stars of the game were starting pitcher Eric "Easy E" Erickson and third baseman Harold "Boom Boom" Martinez.
Erickson, who returned from elbow surgery in June 2008 to throw six strong innings on opening night in 2010, allowed only one run while striking out five. Third baseman Martinez enjoyed his opening night by blasting not one but two home runs (one the bounced off the brand new electronic scoreboard in left field) for four RBIs. Not a bad night's work by either player.
The Hurricanes play the Scarlet Knights again tonight at 7 PM and then Sunday at 1 PM.
Get off the couch and get into the game. Trust me, U will not be sorry U did!
COME ON CANES FANS...SEE THE LIGHT!

solar, i had to look to see where Boundary Road is and how far it is from me. It's about an hour away. I just went to see if there was anything near it that might ever get me going in that direction and came across Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Looks like a good spot for canoeing/kayaking. So during the summer I might just be able to fulfill that request. No promises, but I kinda want to check out that park now after looking up its website - plus saw a good kayaking tour that includes all the gear, basic instructions and last about 8 hours for $100 (which sounds reasonable).

and since nutrition was briefly discussed the other day this caught my eye. from ESPN...
"Florida State’s football players now have their team meals chosen for them for nutrition reasons. Fourth-quarter drills have replaced mat drills, and a lot more running and conditioning is involved. The weight room is different. And the players don’t have to get up at 5 a.m. to work out anymore. "

CANES baseball looking strong!

They were everywhere and all so, so, so young, cute and pretty!
As I sat in the stands, like a dirty old man, I mean cat... bird watching, as they walked by, stood up, stooped over or jumped and yelled. WOW!!! The place was loaded with them and why aren't these girls on the cheerleading team?... I'll never know.
Not taking anything away from the girls on the squads, as some are very cute and I don't want to hurt their feeling, but as a total squad, if comparing our girls to others, like USC, Tx, Okla... we don't come close.
Whoever is over sellecting the cheerleaders must be either blind or gay or related and
if I were in charge of this puppy, I would be wagging the tail... You, over there, you can't dance? that's ok, just jump up and down... that's right!... Bounce, bounce, Yeah, that's right!!!...
LOL, They were everywhere!... Ohhh and the baseball game was good too!... Ahhhh? who won?

Este - Thank you for passing more on about the nutrition. Like I was saying to Dayton yesterday, it's not just steak and potatoes. Obviously we have to deal with the hand we are dealt, I just wish the university would do something about it, because this is a problem that is going to start compounding itself more and more.
Posted by: shwarma | February 20, 2010 at 08:49 AM
este thanks, yea that rate does sound reasonable.
Cat,
Lake Lanier gets over 7.5 MILLION visitors a year. There's a tremendous amount of boat traffic on it 12 hours a day. Three cities sit on its banks.
They recommend you don't drink the water unfiltered from it anymore.
The mountain creeks and sreams running wild are still cold and pristine for the most part.
The Buds sound good on a hot day.
From the time I was 16 till 45 I "drank enough whiskey to float a battleship around,"
I haven't had a drop in over 15 years so I better haul the H20 and let it be.lol!

The Canespace article titles go unnoticed by a lot of folks but they are some of the cleverest plays on words on the net.

Just looking at the photo of EE (maybe just recently add to the blog) looks to me that he is comming off the rubber too soon. He may be losing some steam from his fastball. He throws more off spead stuff so maybe I am completely wrong. My only experience is with 12-13 year olds.
Go Canes.

Surprised Soupster hasn't brought it up... Were talking last night, that we needed a "TailGate before and after Party" just for the hell of it.
We're looking at the Miami/Florida game... across from the Ti, under the tram rail. Parking is free, first come first serve... Show up about 4 hours ahead of time and bring your beach balls and tents, it's time to party!
I know it's a far stretch for some but tickets are only a few bucks and we're playing the Gator HoBo's...
See Mr Big for details !
Truth, six, Canes1, Angry, Chic, Jello and the rest... you know the drill... and add everyone bring a dish, chips, beer what ever!
