NEW BLOG IS UP!

RBLCane

SEC teams with young rosters seem to have no trouble beating up on the ACC, so what's our excuse?

Posted by: Daytoncane | February 19, 2010 at 02:21 PM

SEC dominates recruiting nationally. Over one third of the ESPN 150 choose the SEC every year, and only half of that make it to the runner-up conference. Last year the SEC pulled in 57 ESPN 150 recruits, while the Big 12 and Pac 10 tied with 28. They've done this consistently for a few years, which means that overall, the SEC is more talented than the ACC.

So no excuses here except that the SEC is simply a better conference.

GO CANES!!!

RBLCane

Are you kidding me? On what basis are you basing your opinion? We were 9-3 with a TON of injuries, a majority-sophomore team, and NO O-line. However, we've addressed all of these issues (and others as well) in some way or another this off-season.

Okay here goes:

We have question marks around the Offensive line, we have a great quarterback but our backups as of right now SUCK. Our D line has not proved anything and our secondary IF and I say IF injured will be the weakest link on the team along with the oline. Our runningbacks other than Berry haven't proved a thing. Yes I know Lamar is the real deal and he will be the best runningback in the ACC when all said and done but still. I say a 9-3 record with a possible ACC title game along with a BCS win would put us at 11-3 for the year..Think about it guys.. It is going to be tuff to beat OSU and Clemson away not to mention a tough FSU,VT,GT and UNC team that is loaded on defense. As Lee Corso says "not so fast my friend", patience is a virtue and temptation will hurt U..

Still love what is brewing in Miami just need another year I think before we start talking 11-1 or undefeated season talk...

Posted by: elliott | February 19, 2010 at 02:46 PM

It seems like you're assuming the worst elliot, which I can understand since we sucked for a number of years and had our hearts broken numerous times. But I think those days are over.

We have a squad that's talented all over. Although I don't agree that our backup qbs "suck," I will concede they're inexperienced. This only matters, though, if Jacory is incapacitated, and IMO the kid is as tough as they come.

Our o-line, sure there's some question marks there but question marks don't necessarily imply something bad, and I'd say the chances of our OL being better than last year are pretty good.

Holding every other factor constant, we should be a better team than we were last year--a year jacory was sacked 30+ times--simply because the o-line will probably be better. If we were 9-3 with one of the worst o-lines around, we should be 9-3 or better with a slightly better oline.

But we needn't hold all other factors constant. Our d-line will be older and more experienced this year and will be better coached. Our coordinators will be in their second years in that capacity and should be able to do more with the talent at their disposals. And at RB, I dont see why we cant be as good as we were last year, if not better.

So i get why you'd be cautious about being overly optimistic--I've been cautious myself these last few years, and was pleased as hell that we went 9-4 last year. But I'm here to tell you that realistically--not overly pessimistic or optimistic--there are a lot of signs that point to a better outcome this year for the Canes.

OSU and Clemson are not my worries--I think we can and will beat those teams. Same goes for FSWho. The teams that worry me are VaTech, GT and UNC. VT because they always play us hard, though I'm glad we're playing them at home; GT because we won't have the advantage of playing the triple option early in the year; and UNC because their defense should be RIDICULOUS! I think we win 1-2 of these games at the most and don't lose any more. That would make us an 11 or 10 win team even before championship week and the bowl game.

GO CANES!!!

Cool. I'm in Bethesda (Work). We'll have to get up sometime when the fall comes around.

JCane

Apparently we had a good start to the 2010 diamondballers' campaign.

On the incoming recruit side, I saw that TE "project" recruit, Clive Walford of Glades Central, lead his basketball team to a 60-58 win over Plantation American Heritage in their Thursday regional quarterfinal (with 20 points and 24 rebounds...think he can board?!...the guy going against him was apparently a couple of inches taller, fwiw). I think Jared Wheeler's little bro, who is going to Maryland if memory serves, played on Heritage's basketball team. The reward for Glades Central will be Pinecrest/Brandon Knight on Tues. Maybe Walford can convince him to come play for the U on the hardwood next year.....uh-huh.

Cat5...a good time was had by all. What a way to start the season!

The ball park looks GREAT. New stands along the left and right field lines. New electronic scoreboard.

The Titanic is, well The Titanic. Met up with Ricky, Jerry and the gang. Tailgated with Cat5. Got me an "Omaha Express" milk shake for good luck.

We are good to go!

tight work brah!!! i know we're all ridin' your jock but what you put down is nice for real.

i'm looking forward to your piece on the special teams. this is where we have been sorely lacking in the shannon era. we should be running back 4-5 punts and at least a couple of kick-offs a year. st is a way for the youngins to get some pt and to bash some heads. we've had a couple of headhunters over the last few years and frankly pimp collier aint the one in the return game.

Very informative and balanced - great stuff.

Best writing I've seen on this blog since Calvin, Este & Solar were riffing on Kool-Aid adventures in the summer, and Canechic was gulping nice hot water from the hose.

Reading backwards - look forward to your review of the offense. Offensive line experience / depth scares me; it'll be great to have Ojomo back in the mix at DE; would love to see Green make an impact at MLB.

Oh really. Then why does the STUDENT come before athlete in Student-Athlete. Fact of the matter is, if you're not getting it done in the classroom, you don't play. So yeah, I would beg to differ that Academics does have a strong and direct co-relation to fielding great football teams.

"Give me a team with legitimate talent like Miami and I could go 9-3/8-4 every year."

So did Miami have "legitimate talent" in RS's 1st season in O7', are you telling me that ANYBODY could've coached that team to an "9-3/8-4" season. Then why did the team the following season with much younger players post 2 more wins than that team.

"I bet Nick Saban never says anything negative about His team or how they can get better."

Wow, Nick Saban huh. Dayton, I'm assuming here, but I would bet that Saban probably has one of the, or maybe thee highest paid coaching staff in CFB. I've seen quite a few former CFB

like Aqua said the other day, give me a team with legitimate talent like Miami and i could go 9-3/8-4 every year.

sometimes i say stuff that i don't mean just to get someone rattled up, but most of the time i am straightforward. i am being 100% truthful with you when i say we are not an elite team yet.

you can talk all you want about academics, player conduct, and graduation rates. the truth is that doesn't win championships. i know that's hard for you to cope with but it's true.

i bet Nick Saban never says anything negative about his team or how they can get better. it's ok to be average as long as your players are nice human beings.

You're like one of these pesky ass people who find a scab and just pick away, and pick away, and pick away at it. It seems to me that you think Randy Shannon's Hurricanes should've been averaging 11 wins since He took over. Tell me, which one of His teams in His 3 years as HC should've won 11 games. You don't have a problem with His time management, you don't have a problem with His character development, You don't have a problem with His recruiting. So what is it? This program is on the up and up as far as I'm concerned, but to each His own...
