yeah Solar. One of the best dates I ever went on was shrimping on pier at Commercial and AIA.
We dipped a load of cigar size shrimp then went back and had shrimp cocktails with shrimp that were less than an hour out of the ocean.
Man few things taste better than that

canerock,
Loco, a regular poster here is on the U Rugby team I believe.

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

The whale is a 30 year old male weighing 12,300 lbs and they called him Tilly??? No wonder he was always pizzed off at everyone. How can a whale mack the females with the name Tilly.

solarcane

The ocean is even worse.

you candy azz, you take a greater risk gettin jumped going to the mall to watch Speed Racer or what ever epic flick you drag that poor girl to see over and over.

CGNC

Can't believe that Federov is playing -wow.

solarcane

old skool man that sounds like a helluva time even now!!

I remember sitting on those slippery azzed jetties at Port Everglades on a full moon holding a long dip net and lantern out all night hauling in shrimp.

when we would get two five gallon buckets overflowing with shrimp we would try and get back to the beach without dumping everything into the water.

They probably have a Wii game about shrimping now so you don't have to actually walk out on the jetties and enjoy the night.

CaneRock

I'm liking what I'm hearing from Shannon, get tougher and more physical in the trenches. The guy has His finger on the pulse of this program 4 real...

Canerock Loco who blogs on here is on the team. Went to a match at UCF to support him last year when they played FSU. First rugby match for me and the game was called do to fighting!

Sebastian.
You should at least try some of the springs in North Florida. Crystal clear, very safe, like swimming in a gold fish bowl. Plus if you haven't tubed the Icheetucknee, you're missing something.

Anyone who can dip a digit in the water has my ultimate respect. To many critters in there that I cant see and im in their domain. My parents owned a boat, we lived a street off the ocean and the entire family loved to fish. I still wouldnt go in that water. 42 years of no digits in any lake/river or ocean and still going. A streak that will never come to an end, all thanks to the critters of the ocean

Old Skool

Dang Sebastian.

I think I grew up in or on the water.

Fishing, swimming, snorkeling, diving, gigging, crabbing, skiing, canoeing, surfing, seining, partying.

Yepp, in high school we held keg parties in the lakes. Tie the boats in a circle. Tap a keg and float it. Then swim out and partake.

The best parties were beach parties along the Sunshine Skyway. A keg, a seine, a big pot, some butter and wood and we were set.

Walk the seine out into the grass flats and you'd comeback with shrimp and crabs. Throw em in the pot, fill it with seawater and boil away.

A couple of guys might have a ski boat to go skiing or tubing. Otherwise, we'd blast the music. dance and drink. Get hungry again. Take the seine, walk out into the flats and bring in the second course. Good times.

Thus ends Part II of Old Skool and Solar's 'Dem was De Days'

The Burgh is my hometown so I certainly plan on going to the Pitt game! I will probably have to jack up a few of my friends from the Burgh because I will be representing The U. OSU is a possibility and I will probably make the GT game.

I tell you it is sick what these killer whales can do. I respect those trainers.

Now, talk about a "tough act" to follow... who's going to be the next trainer in-line to take over this killer whale from today for the "next show" at Orlando's Seaworld?! Huhhhmmmm... not me, that's for sure, though, I respect the next trainer going in.

usagainsttheworld formerly known as 1caneinatl

STREETER RHYMES WITH "T" DOESNT IT!?

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

This is the reasoning they gave for the 1st attack. WOW what a load of poo-poo this is. Are you friggen kidding me with this or what????

The Humane Society stated that in 1991, the same orca, "along with two female (killer) whales, drowned a young part-time trainer named Keltie Byrne at Sealand of the Pacific in Canada."

The orcas "weren't trying to kill Byrne, but Tillikum and his orca companions didn't know that humans can't hold their breath as long as whales," Humane Society scientist Naomi Rose said in a report on the group's Web site.

The only really legitimate animal handlers are the psychos at the running of the bulls.

I always give it up for the real porky Mexican dude that's ten yards behind the rest of the runners

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

Posted by: DZ8 | February 24, 2010 at 06:39 PM

I agree that some of the animals have been rescued from certain death and couldnt make it back in the wild. For that im grateful that there are groups out there that take care of these animals and teach us about them. When they have them doing tricks and crap like that IMO thats crossing the line with the animal

solarcane

cg,
I still stop at the BP gas station/amusement park every night just to take it all in, I'm actually speechless up here lots of times.

CGNC

Solar -LOL do NOT give the locals where you live any ideas.....

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

I was born and raised in Fla. living in Daytona the 1st 23 years of my life and now here and the West Coast and to this day I have not so much as put a toenail in the Ocean ora Lake/River. Thats their turf so im not about to take that chance.

DZ8

Bryant Gumbel will do a behind the scenes of the squirell fighting explosion, lol.

My last dog who passed away a few years ago WAS a Pit Bull/Boxer mix.(Zach)

I currently have an American Bulldog.(Daisy) LOL

solarcane

Dogs are a whole different thing tho,

I mean Mike Vick killed off the dog fighting here in Georgia.

They had to revert to fighting squirrels.

It doesn't seem have the same intensity when their handlers rub their little faces in a sack of boiled of peanuts to get them riled up.

I doubt it catches on unless ESPN gets wind of it.

I have no response to that Daytoncane.

I've heard of people getting freaky with dolphins but a killer whale? Guess the "risk factor" makes it exciting. Too bad we can't ask David Carridine.

Posted by: DZ8 | February 24, 2010 at 06:32 PM

kinda makes me want to watch Free Willy for some reason

DZ8

Posted by: solarcane | February 24, 2010 at 06:34 PM

I see it a little different solar. I'll bet most trainers would free their animals. Some animals out there would not survive in the wild (due to traumatic circumstances often caused by humans). So instead of letting them die by nature, or "humanely" by humans. Put 'em in a pool and make some loot off of them that does help other unfortunate animals.

These trainers have given their lives (literally in some cases) for the welfare of these animals. That can only come from some type of love.

If we need to blame someone lets look at the people who fill these parks up and make 'em profitable.

Now Watergate does not bother me / Does your conscience bother you? / Tell the truth

CGNC

Philly, no I won't be going to the Pitt game..$$$ won't allow - I live in Charlotte. LOL are you a Flyers fan?

Daytoncane

CSM you know how many injuries we typically have during the season. Dye will probably get a lot of PT in a few games, and not so much in others.

plus Lovett probably has packages where he puts three d-ends on the field.

DZ8

UMike

The pit bull stuff is ridiculous because I heard in fla U CAN have big cats and chimps etc...

solarcane

sebas, Umike,

You stick your head in an alligator's mouth, or tap lions on the butt with a stick you are just beating the odds.

When a surfer gets bit from a shark , I feel sorry for the surfer, but i don't blame the shark.

When someone gets mauled trying to get rich from a wild animal, it's tough for me to have the same feelings.

I feel worse for the victim's family than I do for the trainer that condones imprisoning wild beasts for money when this stuff goes down.

This particular whale killed two other trainers. Read the article its pretty good.

The first was a part time trainer... but the second is where it gets good. Some dude snuck in after the park closed and was found the next day, dead and naked and spread all over the whale. They said he died of hypothermia but that the whal, thinking he was a cool toy, took his shorts off and dragged him all over the tank. Scrapes everywhere.

I've heard of people getting freaky with dolphins but a killer whale? Guess the "risk factor" makes it exciting. Too bad we can't ask David Carridine.

CaneSawMassacre

Does anybody have a recent picture of Dryon Dye?? They had some pictures over at canesport, but I didn't see him.

There is talk that he is absolutely JACKED!!!!

Does he get a chance to break into the DE rotation this year?

UMike

Sebastian...I agree....in Miami you cant even have pitbulls...but its ok to train whales and shyt lol

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

I hear that Killer Whale has been a badazz for awhile now. Silverbacks, Tigers, Sharks, Elephants, Whales, Bears, Alligators. Peeps thinking they can tame them and nothing bad can ever happen. It just takes 1 second and BAM. Then of course once they gnaw the humans dome then they put them down. I dont get that.

CaneSawMassacre

Sebastian(2001U G.O.A.T.)

Thats the danger of mixing wild animals with human beings. Its sad to hear of course.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Solar, exactly.

DZ8, people think because those animals allow a few humans into their realm that they're all sweet and cuddily, like hamsters or puppies.

Those animals are damn near as smart as humans and completely have a mind and will and lifestyle of their own. You step into it at your own risk.

And they're actually dolphins.

solarcane

Looking at that picture of Spencer Whipple, did he used to be the Shamwow guy or what??

CaneSawMassacre

Sounds like a plan then, what I'll prob do is fly into Philly wed evening, get the hotel there.... Then Thursday we could ride w/ you to PITT, split up the drive if you would like.

Then Friday I'll take the wife to something feminine or shoppy after we recover from the big drinking day game day.

Then Saturday we can plan a day for you to show us around your city.

DZ8

Good one Cav!

DZ8

Good bit of information on Spencer Whipple above, don't know if someone already posted it. The kid will be a coach one day.

DZ8

Why does Spencer Whipple need a scholarship when his dad is an employee of The U?

Length of employment?

solarcane

I think Shannon squeezed about as much juice out of the Coker lemons as he could.

thats a classic right there lmao!

PhillyCane

Nice. Sounds good CSM. Pitt is about 3-4 hours from Philly and there is not much to see in Pitt, very bland and boring like the steel city that it is. Id fly into Philly, get a room there, then U could follow me to Pitt then we could come back and go out for a day in the city on the weekend. Whatever you wana do you let me know

solarcane

Look for a whale that should have never been in captivity to start with to get shipped to an aquarium for doing what he was born to do.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

I like hearing Randy saying more and more that these guys need to get tougher.

That tells me he is satisfied with their level of physical talent and is getting inside their heads more.

We create some turnovers on hits and run away in the fourth quarter in games this year, I'll be convinced Randy is getting his message across team wide rather than the elite players.

Posted by: solarcane | February 24, 2010 at 03:44 PM

>>>>

Solar, I think Shannon squeezed about as much juice out of the Coker lemons as he could. Now he knows and is saying it publicly that HIS kids need to take that next step and become full-time BOSSES. He called them out in that latest piece at Manny's.

So if he's saying ti publicly you have an idea what he's actually saying to the team in private. And I'm sure Whipple's right with him.

solarcane

dz,
I hear ya, they said San Diego just cancelled their whale shows till they find out what happened in Orlando.

DZ8

They're called Killer Whales for a reason.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35566392?GT1=43001

solarcane

Skool I'm watching the Shamu thing now.

Sounds like they were doing construction in or around the holding tanks and one of the whales freaked.

CaneSawMassacre

I live in Tampa, FL... I'm an Italian who was born in Miami, (my family migrated from NY when my dad was a kid)

CaneSawMassacre

Awesome philly..

Yea, I could probably fly in early Thurs or Wed evening after work. . . Go to the game, stay somewhere by that area, then Friday-Sat. Sun do some stuff all over the Philadelphia (Never been/ def. need a cheezsteak sandwhich)

tickets look pretty good for the game... Not crazy expensive.

bahamacane

...

Old Skool

One of the Shamu's has killed a trainer in Orlando.

Apparently, the woman was standing on the edge of the tank and one leapt up and grabbed her.

PhillyCane

CSM where are you from?

PhillyCane

PhillyCane

CSM.. Im not sure of the best places to stay in philly cause i really never have to except I did stay in a marriot courtyard after my brothers wedding and it was very nice and if u know someone there thats def the way to go

PhillyCane

Posted by: CaneSawMassacre | February 24, 2010 at 05:29 PM

Absolutely CSM. Id love to do that. We can go to South Street get chzsteaks, maybe check out the art museum, franklin institute, cihna town, whatever you want. Thatd be fun. I could meet up with you guys and bring my gf along. Then drive out to Pitt. I just bought the tix. Im tihnkin leave early, early thurs morning and grab a motel afterwards if need be. What do you think?

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

And Shannon has the double-edged sword of the U's location in SoFl, its name and prestige which help with recruiting combined with the ridiculous expectations of its fan base.

And the recruiting itself is a double-edged sword because UF, FSU and damn near everyone else has their nose in SoFl.

Just imagine if he had a state all to himself like USC basically does. haha

DZ8

that was a funny scene

DZ8

Didn't they have to do rhythmic gymnastics in Old School?

Old Skool

Solar great line about synchronized swimming.

Although I might add rhythmic gymnastics to that list. The name and the outfits are the only good thing about it. Otherwise I see girls running and leaping waving batons with ribbons attached.

Weren't the original Olympics all about events that in some way related to battle or war? running, wrestling, throwing, jumping, etc.

When I see rhythmic gymnastics, I think surrender

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

but saying that a coach doesn't deserve criticism is just dumb. you're telling me that he's never made a bad move ever?

the win vs Oklahoma was great, but what about Wisconsin? we got physically beat down the entire game. im tired of seeing that.

solar always offers objectivity and yet he's always right.

Posted by: Daytoncane | February 24, 2010 at 02:54 PM

>>>>

Dayton, when did I or anyone else say Shannon doesn't deserve criticism, or more accurately, evaluation? I never did. And in the same post where I pointed out his strengths I pointed out his three biggest and most costly mistakes, and they had nothing to do with player motivation or training.

To me, if you evaluate ANY situation, person, place or thought, evaluate ALL of it.

If you're going to evaluate Shannon, evaluate him on the basis of what he's done with what he inherited, what he's recruited and developed, what he's done with hiring and firing, how he's motivated and prepared the kids, and finally, how they've executed on Saturday.

Furthermore, if you listen to Shannon he says damn near EVERYTHING we say here, esp. in terms of critiques and evaluations.

Based on these criteria, he's right on course with the precedents of Schnell and Butch, who were in similar situations when they took over. Shannon's situation is a helluva lot closer to Schnell's than Butch's btw.

SOUP

I'd like to stay at Soup's house if no one has put a hit on him by then, and make a home game this season too.
