Just when you thought it was safe to come out of your warm winter hiding spot in unusually frigid South Florida in early March, it turns out that Old Man Winter has issued another arctic blast that has swept some vile, foul smelling North Florida trash with it into the 305. It just so happens that both the Gators and the 'Noles are in town this weekend for some winter sports action.
If small, hard balls are your thing, then stroll on over to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Stadium for a three game series between the dreaded Florida Gators and your Miami Hurricanes this weekend. Miami stands at 6-1 on the season after bashing out 78 runs in sweeping three games from the boys from Joisey (Rutgers), taking two of three from the Uptown boys (Manhattan) and beating USF 15-2 on a cold, miserable, grey, windy Tuesday in Tampa.
The Hurricanes also played an exhibition game just for fun against the Florida Marlins in Jupiter on Wednesday. The Marlins had most of the "fun" however, beating the college boys 19-3 as Hanley Ramirez spanked a three run shot in the first inning and Marlins' starter Ricky Nolasco pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
UM aces Eric Erickson and Chris Hernandez are both undefeated and have looked dominant in the two games they have pitched this year. Erickson is scheduled to start Friday night with Hernandez slated for Saturday's contest, both at 7 PM. The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM.
If you like large, bouncing balls then find your way to the Bank United Center for a noon game on Saturday between the Seminoles and Hurricanes. Former UM and current FSU coach Leonard Hamilton brings his Seminole squad into the ACC match-up with a 21-8 (9-6 ACC) record and a decent shot at an ACC title and possible NCAA birth. FSU won this season's previous meeting over Miami in Tallahassee by the score of 71-65.
Miami (18-11, 4-11 ACC) comes into the contest led Head Coach Frank "Oh Ye Of Little Faith" Haith who has his Hurricanes firmly planted in the cellar of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami lost their most recent game to UNC in Chapel Hill by the score of 69-62 in spite of 29 points from Durand Scott. Leading scorer Dwayne "Coming in the Air Tonight" Collins and true freshman point guard Durand "Durand" Scott will now lead the Hurricanes in their final game of the 2009-10 season.
And if that's not enough, and small, soft, fury balls are your kind of thing, then waltz (yes waltz) on over to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center also at noon on Saturday to watch Miami and FSU men's tennis players whack around the little yellow balls in a tennis match pitting the 31st ranked Hurricanes against the 19th ranked Seminoles. The best part? Admission is free.

(Note - this response was written just as new blog became available and hope it doesn't get deleted..haha)
Ok....I wasn't going to bring it up but since 86 wrote this blog, I might as well put my input in. Let me start off by saying......"for the love of god people". It's not like we lost a loved one. We simply had a few people decide not to blog anymore so lets not act like the world is coming to an end. The sun did rise and we moved on, right???.
Now I have to say that i did enjoy most of the comments that those who are no longer with us had written and I even had the pleasure of meeting JSQ on several occasions. They did bring great info to the table but the one thing I have noticed since they stopped blogging is all of the new names that have popped up and left comments. Am I the only one that noticed this?? I am not sure why that is but I have a theory. It seems that if Truth or Mary made a simple comment like "It's nice outside", there would be 50 responses to that comment. But if you had someone who doesn't post often bring something informative to the blog, they would hardly (if at all) get someone to respond thus feeling left out. So if you feel left out, why bother? Now granted I know the folks who are now missing were popular and well deserved but it's nice to see new names contribute to the blog. Especially those who always read what we say but never felt compelled to leave a comment until now.
This blog will continue to move forward, we will continue to read it and as long as Soup's head doesn't get in the way, you shall see the sun rise.
Peace and Go Canes.
(Now back to your regularly scheduled program)

Raize, that's an interesting take on it. I think most of the new posters were responding to the last blob's topic. If they continue to post we'll know more.

Nothing can bring back the focus and bitter hatred then the mention of anything Gator related
3 game sweep and a nice bench clearing brawl. 1st pitch of the 1st game needs to be thrown at the azz of the batter.
Screw the Gators

going back to the baseball debate lemme say this. Not tutting my horn just for some perspective. I lettered in 4 sports in high-school, Football, B-Ball, Wrestling, and that organized activity Baseball. and played D-III football.
Baseball is sooo boring to play and watch. Lets say you play outfield, you might get 1-4 balls hit your way in 9 innings and 3-4 at bats a game. So for the majority of the game you are standing with thumb up your nose or sitting on the bench with a thumb up your _______.
Baseball is an individual game with teammates. Football is the ultimate team sport.

What you can do and can't is a matter of skills and body type, genes, training and desire.
I refer to this quote all the time. Joe Frazier was once asked - something to the effect of - who was the bravest man he knew.
His answer: Mark Spitz.
A guy who goes toe to toe with Ali, thinks Mark Spitz is brave. Why? Frazier couldn't swim.
When he tried it one time for superstars competition, he quit halfway through and said. "It was like I was throwin' punches at the water and the water kept hitting back."

Haha, that's a great analogy but I don't think Spitz would agree about the bravery part. Willingly take a chance on your brain being damaged is pretty high up the bravery scale, not quite up there with skyscraper builders but it's up there.

No doubt Spitz would probably disagree, but to Frazier, Spitz was taking a chance on drowning.

Pretty shallow to blame injuries on the 09 woes. EVERY TEAM deals with injuries. It's not like UM has to deal with it and nobody else does. The top teams have guys that can step in and get the job done when it's required. Dah U doesn't or hasn't lately. That falls on the coaches shoulders. Saying that 11-1 was realistic with the injuries is big time short sighted. IMO
Posted by: This U | March 04, 2010 at 04:43 PM
There's a big difference between other programs having injuries that have a balanced roster of upper classmen. Randy cleaned house when he stepped in. We were well below the 85 scholly limit. We had 53 true sophomores and freshmen on this roster last year. When a sophomore goes down and you have to put in a true freshman in is harder than having a Senior injured who's being replaced by Junior or Sophmore.
You can say injuries didn't hurt us all you want to but they did. If our LB's don't stay healthy this year we're hurtin because of depth.
Having a true 2 deep roster will help us this year. That's why Randy will play 145 downs this year aat the spring game. He couldn't do that before because we didn't have a 2 deep.

I remember watching Frasier try to swim on the Superstars. I was just a kid, and it was a little scary back then, but now it's hysterical. "Why didn't you tell anyone you couldn't swim, Joe?" "I thought I would just figure it out."

86,
I love the space. Hell you got me a ticket on here to go to a bowl game when I didn't have a job over the holidays. I don't even log out of canespace on my computer it's always on.
From what I gather most of us are here because it is a no holds barred Canes site who can't stand some of the BS that goes on around other sites. Invited Guest or not Manny or any other person invited on here needs to know they better back it up and also need to know not everybody is going to agree with that person just like we don't all agree on everything.
I completely repect every poster on here because they have a difference of opinion. Everybody needs to just chillax not take everything so personal. If you can't stand the heat then this isn't the place for you.
Much love everybody! Let's all kiss a make up!
Posted by: FightingIbis | March 04, 2010 at 07:01 PM
fightni,
I agree about the depth being a major deal.
I was thinking about Randy saying they have to get tougher.
The defensive players saying practice is D out to blast the O every down and vice versa.
I don't think Randy had the luxury of guys getting nicked up at practice till this year.
Now he can push them like the old time practices.

football is a very tough sport, but it is not the hardest sport.
basketball is way harder than football in terms of skill. anybody here on canespace can catch a pass. but i doubt everybody could dribble a ball and run at the same time (and look coordinated doing it). and don't get me started on how long it takes to develop a consistent jumper. and basketball players are generally more athletic anyway.
a RBs job is easy, just pick a hole and run through it (that's what she said). the footwork and ball handling of a PG is so important and difficult, especially when you have a longer defender guarding you.
and as far as physicality, people really underestimate how strong and powerful these guys are. if you've ever had to chase a guy off a screen you know how physcial it can get. Sherron Collins is just as big or bigger than everyone close to his size on our football team. same with Chris Wright from Georgetown. Ty Lawson was a muscular dude too.
Wrestling and boxing are harder as well.

But how do U see the UM RB situation working out?
Posted by: SOUP | March 04, 2010 at 08:05 PM
Dayton, yeah, basketball ain't no joke either. I'm helping coach my boys basketball team, and I thought since they had fairly good success in football, that it would translate to football...MAN WAS I WRONG! Like you said, footwork, ballhandling, and shooting are the main fundamentals to get down when they're young. So yeah, basketball exposes a lot of athletic flaws that players didn't think they had...
Posted by: CaneRock | March 04, 2010 at 08:07 PM
I'm trying Soup. But i'm such a die hard football junkie its irks me when people compare football Athletes to Baseball players... OKay thats it no more bashing baseball..
as for the LB unit. I can't count on the freshman MLB Green. The big question is will Buchanon be healthy? and can CJ Holton make an impact. if they do than we still only have 4 quality LB's.
So we might see more nickel sets with spence mcarthy and the 3 corners. DVD, Harris, Mcgee or Hill.
Dare i say we will miss A. Brown. Only on special teams. So Athletic that kid is but must be dumb as a doornail. His future is at a rush LB in a 3-4 scheme.
