Get Some Spring Back In Your Step

Hurricane fans will have two opportunities to get a sneak peek at the 2010 University of Miami football team this month.  UM has announced two dates for fans like UMike and his son (seen below at Traz Powell Stadium) to get a glimpse of their team during two open scrimmages to be held at two different locations in South Florida in March.

Miami will hold a scrimmage on Thursday, March 11 and its annual Spring game on Saturday, March 27. Both events are free and open to the public, except for Canespace blogger Cat5 who has been banned from the events due to the fact that his favorite player Arthur Brown (see below) never cracked the starting lineup and has transferred to Kansas State to be closer to his family.

The Hurricanes will hold an intrasquad scrimmage at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, 3/11/10 at 7 PM. Gates will open at 6 PM and players will take part in an autograph session from 6-6:45 PM.  Last year we took this picture of Jordan Futch (below) with Mrs. OcalaCane at the always fun and incredibly fan friendly event.

The Hurricanes will then wrap up Spring Practice at Traz Powell Stadium on the North campus of Miami Dade College on Saturday, March 27. UM's annual spring game will start at 4:30 PM with gates opening at 3 PM.  UM players will take part in an autograph session from 3:30-4 PM and the game will be broadcast live on CSS. 

Maybe if you are lucky then you can get some of the UM players to sign your special edition ST#26 shirt like the Canes best WR (#4) and fastest WR (#3) are seen doing here at last year's event?

That is to all Hurricane fans except for AngryCane (seen above with Canechic and RaizeCane) because although he looks quite relaxed here he gets way too angry when the Canes lose or Jacory throws an interception for a pick six!  I'm jus sayin...

Dayton...I have been to more Canes BB games this year than most. I have watched a bunch on TV too. They are a talented bunch, but young and inconsistent (does that sound familiar?).

Durand Scott is THE MAN. Can't wait to see him next year as he matures. The Canes are gonna need some more help around him. They graduate three seniors - Collins (leading scorer), Dews and another I can't recall.

After talking to Manny, Shandel and Chris Stock I found out that only about 25% of Miami fans are real college basketball fans. Even fewer are college baseball fans.

Canez1, I'd take Boisie's staff for just about any place in the country BUT the U. Once Shannon gets an OC like Gary Stephens, we'll be back on that 1986 level every year. The other pieces are in place.

Furthermore, Petersen's able to get kids and develop them slowly in that system he's been running for about 10 years.

In ten years we won't have any concerns about this team year in and year out.

In March I always go with a team that has two guards who can shoot and create off the dribble. Then whoever's playing great team defense and then whoever has a strong front line.

Here's a few questions for you...

Are the Kansas team's really that good??

Is Duke the best in the ACC??

Is the Big East the best conference? I think it is but who'll win it?

Is UK legit or another smoke and mirrors job?

dayton- I like watching Big East games as well, a good friend of mine is a Nova alum, and you have to know about them if you want to talk to him this time of year, so I try to watch their games when they are on. I haven't followed the Pac 10 at all this year because they just aren't interesting, and their games are usually the ones that are on when I have the time to watch. But my Canes performance has taken a lot of my interest in CBB away.

To compound on what SOUP said UM Hoops is very talented but very undisciplined. They had many games that were winnable that they were close or even up on then blew it down the stretch.

I like West Virginia as a serious contender in the best east along with NOVA..

Kansas and Kentucky have a serious shot in the tourney, and John Wall IS THE REAL DEAL as far as talent. BLOWS that U.M. could not reel him in like they had initially thought.

Anybody win their NCAA pool last year? Seems like it was 4 years ago the last time I won my money back.

Man it was crazy here when Kiffin left!! I LAUGHED AT ALL THE VOLS AT WORK!! They are so self-indulgent around here that KIFFIN was the pefect fit.

They always try to take shots at me because they beat us back a few years ago after we DESTROYED them during our last NC season (I was there and loved every minute). When Kiffin left with slimey Orgeron the people at work acted like they lost their first born and the whole city went nuts. IT WAS SO FRICKING AWESOME!

All I hear at work is SEC this and SEC that...That's how I already knew the SEC vs ACC records and people were shocked, proved TOP HEAVY at work and shut them up a little. Don't get me wrong people, they are the best conference, because they are TOP HEAVY. The gaytors that are sprinkled around here talk about how we won't play them??!!!

Didn't we try to schedule them and they were scared...I would be too, because I think we are 6-1 in our last 7 versus the MIGHTY GAYTORS!!

both Kansas and Kansas St. are more than good. Dennis Clemente used to be at Miami, and now he's a superstar at K st (coaching is overrated right?). Kansas' defense is great, but their bigs have been very incosistent. it's gotten so serious that Cole Aldrich got benched.

Duke would have to qualify as the best ACC team, but they still can't guard teams that are more athletic than them. their shooting can bail them out though.

the Big East is by far the best conference. Syracuse is the best team. they just have too much length and athleticism in their lineup. it's going to be hard for people to break that 2-3 zone because it's not played very much.

UK is very good, but they lose focus easily. John Wall is spectacular in the open court but he turns the ball over too much for my taste. if they don't start getting Patrick Patterson more involved they'll struggle against the better tournament teams.

Miami's problem this year is the lack of dynamic players at the 3,4, and 5. Hell, that's been there problem since Haith took over, at least Hamilton used to get some serviceable big guys. Collins has been nothing more than a dribble... dribble...think about it...dribble...dribble some more...think about it again...alright, now I'll shoot that one shot that I've been working on since I got here...inconsistency. I think if Shaq could name Him, His name would be The Big Inconsistency, that guy is inconsistent. Oh, did I mention that He's inconsistent.

college basketball is more about guard play these days. as long as you have a big who can rebound and prevent penetration in the paint you have a good chance of winning in the tourney.

Villanova has lived with this strategy for years and it's worked nicely for them. Memphis a couple of years ago had Joey Dorsey, and all he could do was block shots and dunk. but they had Derrick Rose, CDR, and Antonio Anderson.

great guard play can take you far as long as you have forwards on the wing who can help with rebounding and scoring in the paint.

Man, Haith can recruit guys who are just good enough to make you think they'll combine to be a great basketball team but yet they either never can play together well enough to bring out the best in each other or else they just aren't good enough to make any noise in the regular season much less the big dance. I'm not calling for his head because I remember how frustrating it was watching Clark's gunners forget playing defense but at some point he's going to have to get better because he's already playing from behind in the organizational and resource battle to begin with so he needs to compensate somehow with superior gameplan.

I guess, to sum it up, Haith has me vexed.

Junior linebacker Sean Spence
On areas of his game he wants to work on this spring: Everything. I feel like there's always room for improvement. I'm not satisfied with any parts of my game. I'm just trying to get better each and every day.

On his play last season: It was not what I wanted it to be. I wanted to come out and help the team win games. I wasn't able to do that. I got hurt and had a setback. Now, I just need to bounce back.

On expectations as a junior: A lot of leadership. I want to be able to keep my composure on the field. I want to help my defense stay together when we're going through rough times on the field. Just being a natural leader.

On tight end Richard Gordon: He's looking good. He's a load. He's catching a lot more balls. He's being physical. He's always been physical. Catching the ball and getting on the field has been a big part of his game already this year.

Junior defensive back Brandon Harris

On how hard it is to take down running back Lamar Miller: Miller time! It's tough, because Lamar is a very fast kid. He's a guy that will sneak up on you. If you think he's going to fake you out, he'll lower his shoulder on you and get in your chest. You have to pick your poison with Lamar and just hope you get him on the ground. He won't go down easy, though."

On how important scrimmages are: There very important. We need to be able to go out there and compete with each other. We haven't played a game since December. Even though the season doesn't start until the fall, during this offseason, we need to get back in the form of competing with each other, grinding it out and coming out in tough situations such as a scrimmage. You'll have different scenarios. It's the closest to a game atmosphere that we can get until the fall.

On what older players tell young guys about scrimmages: The main thing we tell them is not put too much pressure on it. It's a scrimmage. It's a game situation, but it's still meant to be fun. You want to go out there and focus on executing your game plan.

On what the team wants to accomplish by the end of March: We want to be closer as a team, but by competition. Our big motto this spring is being competitive. The defense wants to go at the offense every time we touch the field. The same goes for the offense. We don't want to pat each other on the backs along this way. We want to really, really get after it this spring.

It's interesting to see the maturation of these guys, year after year, this junior class in particular. They've been through the highs and lows and now they know what to expect of themselves, individually and as a group, more than ever. They also know exactly where and how they need to improved, individually and as a group.

It's not like the way they were as frosh or even soph's where there were plenty of ???s, esp. the way they were all thrown into the fire.

They're really maturing, physically and mentally and they still have what four months before fall scrimmages to get bigger, faster and smarter.

The schedule sets up quite well to show whether they've really turned the corner and become Canes.

Don't say anyone is wrong for their opinion. It is no more wrong or right then yours is.

Is you diagree state your opinion or show facts on why you think you are right and move on.

I forgot to mention how crucial the coordinators and new DL are to this overall growth.

They'll be more confident in everything they do and will play faster as well.

The big question is still the Mike and LB in general. Shayon would be the first frosh since Morgan to really take over the Mike.

Cornelius should also be able to step-in with six months of study and conditioning under his belt. He and Williams are fast enough to be dime package specialists.

I'll take Kentucky and 'Cuse.

Wall, Cousins and Patterson are a nice PG and Forwards to have. Wall can just flat out take over a game whenever he wants - that game against Rocky Top when they were down by 19, he just decided to carry the team on his back. I haven't seen someone with that kind of burst from end-to-end since Tyus Edney with UCLA back in the day. He gets other people open - that's his specialty. If he could only hit the 9-12 foot jumper consistently, he'd be D-Wade-esque

'Cuse is just flat out good. They haven't lost on the road - no other top 10 team has done that this year. Kansas, Kentucky, K-State, Purdue, New Mexico lost twice on the road ... West Virginia lost three times on the road ... Duke and Nova lost four times on the road ... Ohio State lost five times on the road. That curb stomping 'Cuse laid on Nova was impressive.

Nova looked good at the beginning of the year, but that beat down against Georgetown and then losing back-to-back games against UConn and Pitt really showed the nation how to play Nova.

Bill Self has done a great job out at Kansas - then again, what about the competition Kansas plays in the Big 12? It's not exactly Big East worthy. Missouri has its moments - at home - then they lost to Vandy, Richmond and Oral Roberts on the road. Oklahoma State is too inconsistent and they got blown out by Tulsa, and also lost to Rhode Island. Texas is one of the most overrated teams to even grab the #1 spot this year. Kansas State will make a little noise in the tourney this year, simply b/c they'll run you to death

How about this - the only team to beat both #1 ranked teams this year is Rocky Top when they knocked off both Kansas and Kentucky

I'll stick with the Cats and the 'Cuse. Just hope they're able to meet in the final game and the selection committee doesn't hose it
