Canes Play It Smart, Look Sharp at Lockhart
Over the last few years the annual Spring game held at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale has become more of a public relations exercise than a real competitive event between the orange and white or offense and defense.
To be honest, the Canes and recruiting Coordinator Clint Hurtt (seen here with OcalaCane) use this "game" primarily as a recruiting event.
The University utilizes it as a community outreach event for fans living in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. There usually is very little in the way of showcasing or evaluating talent of the players or the team.
With Head Coach Randy Shannon playing it smart by resting several projected starters and other players who managed to get themselves "nicked up" while "flying around" in practice, the annual Spring game was supposed to be another vanilla scrimmage to appease the fans insatiable appetite for football, any kind of football, even if the score or the outcome didn't matter.
Or maybe it was for the cheerleaders?
Anyway much to the surprise of many fans who attended and maybe even some of the coaches, this Spring game may have been made with vanilla ice cream, but it was topped with a generous helping of chocolate syrup, and maybe, just maybe, a cherry, I mean a Berry on top.
It's simply amazing what some real competition on a team can do. So here is our summary of what we asked you to watch for.
Compete with this:
Offensive Line:
While the OL was no where near dominant, as a unit they played MUCH better than most had projected. They opened several nice holes for the RBs and provided above average protection for Harris and Cook. There were very few penalties for false starts or holding. The OL was certainly NOT a "Mongolian (well U know)".
There was chocolate syrup all over the place here and even a cherry, ahh Berry, on top. If Mike James (seen below with his co-star Berry) isn't the second coming of Frank Gore (before the knee injuries) then I don't know who is.
If you didn't see his run after catching a short screen pass just before half let me tell you that the he showed the vision, balance and the moves to make it happen. His cutbacks (3) during this one run were nothing short of spectacular. It is apparent that his feet are direct wired to his brain and it is wonderful to watch them work in complete synchronicity without any delay.
And due to injuries, Damien Berry finally got a chance to show what he can do. And boy can he DO! Berry was the star of the scrimmage and broke off a 54-yard run that ended with a flip into the end zone for a TD. When was the last time you saw that? The run was a thing of beauty but was NOT Berry's only moment on the day. He showed he means business as he ran mean and hard and right around and then over a bunch of Cane defenders. We are pleased to report that Loco's favorite player is indeed a p l a y e r.
Cornerbacks:
Keep moving, keep moving, there's nothing to see here, keep moving...we have taken the stance of don't ask, don't tell on this one. OK, OK they made a few good plays but there is still much work to be done here. The only positive surprise here is the continued play of coverted WR Sam Shields who may just have found a home at CB. We talked to his father in the parking lot after the game (more on this later). We suggest that you come back tomorrow for additonal information.
The LB play was good, but not great. The good news? Sean Spence is Sean Spence. No sophomore slump or worries there, only a future NFLU player in waiting.
We met and took photos with Jordan Futch (he's bigger than we imagined) during the autograph session before his start at OLB. Futch (seen here with Ocala's bride-to-be) is a bright, personable and athletic player who appears to have great potential and great future at LB for the Hurricanes.
Arthur Brown continues to impress as he makes progress in the middle. It says here he starts by mid-season (As Cat5 goes crazy!).
Wide Receiver:
If there was ever any doubt let it be known: Thearon Collier can ball. Be ready to see him early and often in games this season making tough catches over the middle and moving the chains. This fearless slot receiver might be the missing link that finally allows the outside recievers to get open and get deep this season.
And wouldn't we LOVE to see some of that with LaRon Byrd, Travis Benjamin, Davon Johnson, Tommy Streeter and my personal favorite Aldarius "Glue Hands" Johnson scoring a quick six. Here, for the first time ever on any blog, a perfect view of the soon to be famous six million dollar (projected NFLU signing bonus) glue hands!
And by the way, don't forget WR Kendal Thompkins who caught a pass (as predicted) and WR Leonard Hankerson who made a nice leaping catch for a big gain during the "game". The Canes are loaded at wide-out and will take advantage of other teams secondaries in 2009.
And we would like to see all of this just in time for Labor Day! Please. Pretty please.
yup

Hey!
Posted by: MDCane | March 24, 2010 at 10:03 PM
solar - ya, I know .. I was about to go crazy, so, that's my final concrete offering
I added some names if you didn't notice, I didn't think they could go without, esp. considering the era
I've never felt so many invisible lightning bolts from people in the news room when I'm in there, chillin and watching 3 different games on the Sony Bravia 60 inchers
But hey, like I tell them - I'm like a fireman, when it's time to work, I get right on it without hesitation .... but also, there's a lot of downtime that I can't control. Don't hate the playa, hate the game
I'm considered basically the best at what I do up at the station - I can't help that I'm good and it comes easy to me
It's not my fault they chose to be field reporters that have to go out and do any story or producers, that have to sit at their keyboard for 8 hours a day and type
So when they see me playing stickball with a wiffle ball bat and a hard tape ball that is smaller than a golf ball, in one of the studios - ya, be jealous ... and do me a favor, crawl up one of the 24 foot ladders and go find that little tape ball in the lighting grid when I launch the pitcher's weak azz fastball into orbit

We have a guy up at the station, who I have nicknamed "King Raccoon", b/c that dude eats everything and can smell food from a mile away
Every Sunday night, the cleaning crew takes everything out of the fridges and throws it away
So Sunday nights are like a freakin all-you-can-eat buffet for King Raccoon. I went into the break room one time to get some food I was going to take home and King Raccoon was sitting there at one of the tables with it, along with at least 5 other Tupperware/Gladware/Chinese boxes of food and was chowing down on all of them
I was like, dude, what are you doing? He just said, they throw the food out anyway, everyone knows it, so if they don't come get their food before they throw it out it just goes into the trash ... I'm hungry, so I eat it. I told him I was coming to get my food to take home, he told me he already ate it and I was too late
Freakin King Raccoon

Here's a question ...
Who do you blame for this kind of behavior?
"Wizards Coach Flip Saunders benched starting forward Andray Blatche after he played just 7 minutes 31 seconds. Saunders said he pulled Blatche initially to discuss the player not getting back on defense but that Blatche refused to listen to the coaching staff.
Saunders said his assistants attempted to talk to Blatche about the situation multiple times but that Blatche's response was he "just didn't want to play."
"I'm disappointed. I'm the most disappointed I've ever been in 15 years with a player," Saunders said.
Blatche said that he "just didn't want to play". Wow. What a lazy piece of garbage.

Capt O seems correct that those that transfer can't take the pressure of big time football.

QB Robert Marve: Marve is a junior who transferred from Miami, where he was a starter in 2008. If he lives up to billing, the Boilermakers have a chance to be excellent on offense. He's a rare talent at this school.

Did you guys see the story about Meyer ripping the Orlando Sentinel beat reporter for reporting the Deonte Thompson quote? It's gonna be at the front of the line on talk radio tomorrow!
Meyer threatened to pull Fowler's credential, then he said if Thompson was his kid, they'd be "going at it" right now! The guy isn't losing it, he's lost it!
Meanwhile Randy is getting the run around from UM with regards to his contract and just shrugs his shoulders.
I don't care what you guys think of Randy Shannon, I like the guy. He has dealt with so much more adversity than any of us can imagine, and as a result he doesn't sweat the small stuff. Couple that with the fact that Shannon was a key member of two of the greatest undefeated teams in the history of college football, and he really doesn't have anything to prove. Been there, done that!
P.S. Anyone look at our defense this off-season? Probably one of the "sickest" lines in the country! I think Randy knows a thing or three about how to make that unit tick! The guy is building this thing to last.
Pay the man for God's sake!
Go 'canes!

South Carolina pols call on black recruits to boycott Gamecocks
By Matt Hinton
Lingering racial tensions have made their mark on South Carolina sports for years, notably in the NCAA ban on all postseason games in the state in response to the Confederate flag that flies on statehouse grounds, occasionally exercised for conference tournaments as well. The latest protest, though, is coming from within the state's own borders, by members of the legislature -- including a former South Carolina player -- who have begun encouraging black recruits to renege on their commitment to the Gamecocks in opposition to the pending exit of the only black member of the university's board of trustees:
State Rep. David Weeks, chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he doesn't think there are enough votes in the Legislature to get lawyer Leah B. Moody appointed to a full term on the 22-member board next month. She is the board's only black member and is finishing the term of a trustee who resigned before pleading guilty to bank fraud.
"We are asking young athletes to be aware … there are folks in this state who say it's fine to play ball but not be on the governing board," Weeks said.
He and several other lawmakers, including former Gamecocks lineman Anton Gunn, a black Democrat from Columbia, said members of the black community were calling recruits and their families and asking them to rethink playing for the school. [...]
Lawmakers would not say how many recruits had been called or whether any were reconsidering their commitments. They also would not identify the callers.
Taking the fight to the football team seems like the last, desperate blow in an ongoing fight over the makeup of the board, which significantly underrepresents South Carolina's black population even with one member. About 11 percent of the university's student body is black, according to South Carolina's largest newspaper, The (Columbia) State, as opposed to about 28.5 percent of the state's....

Where are we seeing the new recruit projected as a safety? I think he is coming in at CB and S will come locally.
Also, with the Hyde article and sports talk radio filled with chatter about Shannon this morning, I hope this puts some heat on the university. I actually think that a deal will be reached by the April 15, as they will finalize the details after spring practice closes
Posted by: shwarma | March 25, 2010 at 10:08 AM
that PR genius up there in the 352 really makes me respect shannon. id rather my coach be indifferent and perceived as cold than be a freak of nature.
Each coach has their own level of media association (though savvy is reserved for the select few, i.e. mack brown), but wow some really know how to lose a battle. ESPN is all over this, and none of them are saying anything good.
In other news, cant wait to see that new, amped up D-line on sat... Even if it is vanilla in flavor, bailey ripping through an o-line always elicits cheers.
Posted by: reggaebob | March 25, 2010 at 10:22 AM
This is what I don't understand about our fanbase. Remember the part in the U movie where Highsmith said that they'd be building statues and monuments for all their accomplishments if that happened at Alabama or Texas.
Then why would you think the school would handle the coaches contract and differently than what's going on now.
Did UM get a refund when Shannon made a million dollars and had the worst record in 30 years?
I guess it's a Canes thang and most of our fan even don't understand.

After missing last season with a broken jaw, defensive end Adewale Ojomo has improved this spring...
I'm sure Ojee has allot of built up anger, after sitting on the bench for a year... gritting his teeth! Weighing somewhere between 250 and 262 is allot of beef to control.
2009, we had 22 sacks with Bailey having 7, Robinson had 4, Spence and Wesley had 3, Harris, Holmes, McCarthy, Vernon and Moncur each had 1.
If Bailey is playing middle line, look for double team on Bailey and Mike to get allot more team sacks in 2010... Guessing 30 team sacks
