WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS A LARGE AMOUNT OF FACTS AND STATS SO MANY OF YOU MAY WANT TO AVOID READING AS THIS INFORMATION MAY CONFLICT WITH YOUR PERSONAL OPINION WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, AND IN RARE CASES, YOUR HEAD TO EXPLODE.
Your University of Miami Hurricanes had a total of four players drafted during the three days of the 2010 NFL Draft. The players moving on the next level in the NFLU are:
- TE Jimmy Graham, Third Round, #95 overall was selected by the New Orleans Saints.
- LB Daryl Sharpton, Fourth Round, #102 overall was selected by the Houston Texans.
- OL Jason Fox, Fourth Round, #128 overall was selected by the Detroit Lions.
- TE Dedrick Epps, Seventh Round, #235 overall was selected by the San Diego Chargers.
UM players RB Javaris James and CB Sam Shields were not drafted and will seek to join the drafted players in the NFLU as unrestricted free agents.
As far as other Florida schools and their selections here is how they fared in the 2010 draft:
- The Florida Gators led the way with 9 players selected overall including 3 players in the first round, 3 in the second round and one in the third round. Surprisingly and contrary to many NFL draft experts, UF QB Tim Tebow was selected 25th overall in the first round by the Denver Broncos. This selection will be closely watched by many on both sides of the decision.
- The Florida State Seminoles had 5 players selected including one first round pick in CB Patrick Robinson at #32 overall by the New Orleans Saints.
- The University of South Florida also surprised some experienced draftniks by producing five NFL draft picks including first rounder and #15 overall pick DE and NCAA back-flip champion Jason Pierre-Paul. The Bulls also produced the #37 and #65 overall picks several spots ahead of the Hurricanes highest ranked player Jimmy Graham at #95.
- The UCF Golden Knights had one player selected in the second round at #41 overall.
As far as the competition between conferences to win the coveted "Most Players Drafted" title the SEC dominated the race to the top of the draft board. The SEC had 49 players drafted which blew away the competition from the Big 10 at 34 selections, the ACC at 31 picks and the Big 12 at 30 selections.
The Pac 10 conference had 29 selections of which over half (15) came on defense. I thought they didn't play defense in the Pac 10? I guess the 32 NFL teams, to some degree, disagree.
The Big East was the Big Least when it came to the 2010 NFL draft. The conference produced a paltry 18 picks overall or 31 less than the SEC and about 20 less selections than the average (38) of the other four major conferences.
Let's go back to the Atlantic Coast Conference for a minute. The three ACC teams that beat Miami in 2009 were VT, UNC and Clemson. Among these teams both VT and Clemson had 5 players selected in the 2010 draft.
Former UM Head Coach Butch Davis at UNC had only 2 players picked, one player each in the fourth and fifth rounds. Since Miami had four players selected overall and two (almost three) players selected higher than the Tar Heels highest ranked player (@ 127) that means Miami lost to a team with LESS talent on the field.
Coaching may be over-rated, but turnovers are definitely not.
The highest ranked player selected from all of these ACC teams was Clemson RB and Hurricane killer CJ Spiller who was the only first round pick at #9 overall to the Buffalo Bills. The Hurricanes may be done facing Spiller but now Miami Dolphin fans get to endure the same torture twice a year. Great.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the Wisconsin Badgers who beat Miami in the Champs Sports Bowl Game in Orlando. They only had two players selected (DE Schofield and TE Garrett), both in the fourth round.
Hmmmmmmmm...maybe coaching isn't over-rated after all?

How many seniors graduated our team this year and who were they?
Posted by: PhillyCane | April 26, 2010 at 12:51 AM
VTech should've had one less player drafted than they did, Cody Grimm basically hit the lottery by being drafted by the Bucs in the 7th Round
I'm not putting much stock in Miami having some players drafted higher than a team like UNC, but losing to UNC this year. 4 INTs for 214 yards don't help yourself and 3 of them to the same guy, with 2 of them going for TDs. Just like you said, turnovers are not overrated
Rutgers had 2 guys taken in the 1st Round, USF had 3 guys taken before a Cane was taken
Miami beat USF down this year and they most likely would've done the same to Rutgers
Wisky was playing that game like it was their Super Bowl, it's a shame that Miami couldn't block to protect Jacory and it's a shame that the DBs and LBs have a mix up on covering the opposing team TE

I appreciate the breakdown this article provides, but I mean, the draft is as fraught with picks that don't pan out as much as your given signing day. Really, the breakdown to look at is the draft from a few years ago and how many of those guys have held on to a job less than a half decade later then look at the conference boom/bust comparisons. But that's a LOT of research.

Late TD pass gives Gray win over Scarlet
By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer
Apr 24, 5:47 pm EDT
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—On a day when Terrelle Pryor saw little playing time, little-known Kenny Guiton made the most of his.
The third-team quarterback tossed a 45-yard scoring pass to Taurian Washington with 55 seconds left on Saturday to give the Gray a 17-14 victory over the Scarlet in Ohio State’s annual intrasquad scrimmage.
“I feel comfortable,” said Guiton, a redshirt freshman from Houston. “I had three of the starting linemen, so there was nothing for me to be antsy about. So I just took my time and played ball.”
The Buckeyes wrapped up their 15 spring practices before a crowd of 65,223 at overcast Ohio Stadium.
Guiton completed 11-of-21 passes for 167 yards and two scores, both to Washington, who had three catches for 83 yards.
The performance of Guiton was a surprise to many. He was the last player offered in his recruiting class and had to wait until things fell apart with two other prized recruits before he got the call with a scholarship.
“Kenny Guiton has proven it every day up through the spring,” Washington said. “For being the last guy picked, he’s done extremely well during the spring. He’s a great kid and in the future he’s going to do great things.”
Pryor completed 8-of-12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown before retiring early. He did not speak with reporters afterward.
Coach Jim Tressel said he was pleased with the progress his team made in the spring.
“We know we’ve got a lot to do between now and August, and it’s up to the players to kind of initiate that,” he said. “I know they’ll do that. Our staff will do a great job of planning a good preseason in August and be ready to see if we can meet the challenge of 2010.”
The teams swapped scores midway through the first quarter. First, Washington snagged a 28-yard scoring pass from Guiton, then Pryor hit Dane Sanzenbacher on a 12-yard completion for the Scarlet.
It stayed that way until Drew Basil kicked a 47-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Bo Delande’s 4-yard touchdown run with 4:48 gave the Scarlet a 14-10 lead.
After Delande’s run, the Scarlet shocked the Gray with an onside kick that was recovered by the Scarlet’s Spencer Smith. Joe Bauserman, considered Pryor’s backup until now, hit James Jackson on a 43- yard pass. After a penalty, the Scarlet had a first-and-5 situation at the Gray 13 with just over 3 minutes left.
But Bauserman’s throw into the end zone was intercepted by Nate Oliver, who returned the ball to the 11. Guiton took it from there.
He completed passes of 8, 15, 16 and 11 yards to get the ball into Scarlet territory before lofting a pass along the left sideline near the goal line that Washington pulled in between defenders Dominic Clarke and Nate Ebner.
Taylor Rice then intercepted a long Bauserman pass in the final minute.
There was one scary moment, however. Rather than just take a knee and run out the clock, the Gray coaches had Guiton passing from deep in his own territory. A teammate landed on his knee and he was temporarily laid out on the turf before walking off the field.
He said he was fine and was hoping his play might have put him in the race to be No. 2 on the depth chart.
“I don’t think I put a stamp on anything but I know I have to keep working,” he said. “I’m going to leave it in the coaches’ hands.”
The Buckeyes will return nine starters on offense when they open their season on Sept. 2 against Marshall at home.

Six, as much as I'd like to say if we don't throw 4 picks we win. It's never that simple. Gotta give credit to UNC's defense, they forced a bunch of bad throws from Jacory. Kid needs to learn how to throw the ball away. You hear this all the time,"take what the defense gives you" that's exactly what you do to a defense like UNC's, eventually the big plays will come.

Good write up but here are my thoughts. Miami has several possible first rounders on this team right now. This past draft is the last year we wont be hearing about big time Miami players. Lets look at some of the potential big time players for the U.
Allen Bailey =first round material if healthy
Leonard Hankerson =second round talent if production is there this year
Orlando Franklin =first round material if production is right this year
Colin Mccarthy
DVD?
But after next years draft look at all the players we will lose:
Byrd
Benjamin
Johnson
Jacory
Spence
Ray Ray
Telemaque
B Harris
Streeter
I mean if these guys stay healthy and live up to their potential Miami could be looking at 10 to 11 draft picks in the 2011 draft...

Also, if JD is being set up to take over for Morris when he retires it'll be the death blow to the baseball program.

cbs sports seems to think that we only have three wr's that should be in the top tier of college football for the 2012 draft. In my opinion Miami should have 5 recievers in the top 10 for that 2012 draft.
Byrd, streeter, benjamin, aj and theron collier

Thearon will not be a top 10 receiver sorry. the other 4 have a shot...but they won't be because their production won't be really high b/c they will share passes from Jacory.
Secondly, Damien Berry will be a 2nd round pick in next year's draft

Looking back to last year of 09...
and jump in if i'm missing people
In 09 we had Spencer Adkins drafted to the Giants, playing 5 games and recording 3 tackles as a LBer.
.....................................
The surprize of the year is in Bruce Johnson who went to the Giants as a (Undrafted Free Agent), after the 09 draft ended.

Cornerback Bruce Johnson leads Giants in performance-based pay
Mar/14/10 10:58 PM
For the first time in three years, the Giants player who received the most in performance-based pay was not Michael Johnson.
But it was a Johnson. Bruce Johnson, to be exact.
The rookie cornerback, an undrafted free agent who made the final roster and saw plenty of duty this past season because of injuries to Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery, received $270,766 in PBP (performance-based pay), according to NFL Players Assoociation records. Not a bad payday, considering his salary for his rookie season was only slightly more at $310,000.
The league hands out (extra) PBP checks to players whose playing time exceeded expectations (i.e. those players who were bargains because of low salaries and high amounts of playing time). The top of the list is usually dominated by low-round picks and undrafted free agents who found their way into starting or supporting roles. I'm hearing Vikings C John Sullivan, a former sixth-round pick who started every game this past season, had the highest payout in the league, though I'm not sure how much he received.
The National Football Post reports Sullivan indeed led the league with $397,555.
Bruce Almighty
...posted by David Jacks...
Matt Mosely takes a look at the rookies making an impact in the NFC EAST. The rookie surprise for the east? None other then the Giants own rookie free agent Bruce Johnson. Johnson was once considered an early to mid round prospect coming out of THE U, but poor combine numbers and a decline in Miami’s program (newly renewed) lead to Johnson’s undrafted status. As Mosely points out it was clear from early in camp that Johnson was better then 6th and 7th round corners De’Andre Wright and Stoney Woodson. Coughlin found room for Bruce on the roster and due to injuries to Kevin Dockery and Aaron Ross, Bruce has found himself as a mainstay in the Giants secondary.
As the nickel Johnson has 8 tackles, 3 pass deflections, 1 interception returned for a touchdown and one forced fumble. Not bad for an undrafted rookie. My guess is the next time Mosley runs this piece we might see Hakeem Nicks’s name mentioned, although I’m not so sure it would be a suprise at this point. All this is a testament to how will Jerry Reese and company do their jobs in the front office. Some late round picks and undrafted rookies that are worth mentioning (some of these guys come from accorsi as well) Chase Blackburn (undrafted), Kevin Boss (5th round), Mario Manningham (3rd round), David Diehl (5th round), James Butler (undrafted), and Ahmad Bradshaw (7th round).
In the off season, he had surgery to the wrist and should be ready for the beginning of the season, maybe as the starter!!!
....................................
Glad to say, here is something that I'm happy to report!
.............................
On a Side note... not sure how the no-cap is going to effect players next year, in 2011, but Johnson being on the low end (2nd year) might benefit.
who's got next?

Bailey: Round 1
Hank: Round 3
Franklin: Round 2
McCarthy: Round 2
DVD = Sam Shields UFA
2012: It bis WAY too early to tell on MOST of these guys, but as it stand now:
Byrd: 2nd round (has size and is solid, but not spectacular)
Benjamin: 2nd round (speed to burn)
Johnson: 3rd Round (lack of speed)
Jacory: 3th round (should be higher after 2010)
Spence: 2nd round (solid)
Ray Ray: 1st round (based on potential)
Telemaque: 1st round (see above)
B Harris: 2nd round (lack of size)
Streeter: 3rd round (size and speed but lack of production)

I hate to bust the bubble but just because you were drafted does not mean you are on the team. You have to pass all the cuts first. Last but not least just because you were the star in HS or college does not mean you will be a star in the NFl. The next step is the biggest. CJ may just be a flash in the pan when he gets introduced to the Backfield of the pro's. Thanks

Or.... Maybe it means that they had LESS talent that LEFT.. Who's to say they don't have more talented juniors, sophomores, and freshmen?

USAFCane, Jacksonville and New Orleans and San Diego have NEVER drafted a Cane in the first round.
Every time Miami drafts a Cane, they draft the WRONG one. But then, they keep drafting bad OSU* players, too. Eric Kumerow? Ted Ginn? Ugh....
Posted by: Ungar | April 26, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Aqua...I have to call U out. Yesterday U criticized UM Baseball Head Coach Jim Morris.
Morris is the ONLY major sport coach at UM to have won an ACC title and has won TWO National Championships at Miami.
So are U saying it is fair to criticize Morris but NOT Randy Shannon? How is it fair to criticize Morris for the FSU series when others say that Shannon is immune from criticism?

I believe that is true, but would have top research it to get the facts.
On one mock 2011 draft I saw yesterday on ESPN they had a UNC DE going second overall. I think UNC has like 3 defensive players projected for the first round that include the DE, DT Marvin Autin and a CB/Safety.

Spiller has REAL 4.2-4.3 speed. Can't coach that. He may be a return guy in 2010 but by 2011 he will be the starter at RB.
That is a FACT because it is my OPINION. Believe that!

The biggest news in UNC after the season was how many talented defenders decided to return for their senior season. We will crush them this year, I'm more Capt. than solar;) But they have SICK talent returning on the defensive side of the ball. They are a year ahead of us as far as development of their players.

And O'Brien Schoffield of Wisconsin might have had the same kind of draft status as Brandon Graham. Probably not quite as high because he is smaller than Graham but Schoffield was "flying up" draft boards showing his ability to be a linebacker at the next level until he tore his knee in the senior bowl/practice. I think the Eagles got him in the 4th round. He'll end up being a steal IMO.

Posted by: DZ8 | April 26, 2010 at 12:10 PM
You can't predict where any of these kids will be drafted based off of their sophmore seasons...
Example: Before 2009, would you have had Hank getting drafted at all? Would you have even thought of him as an NFL caliber WR?
I think Byrd, Streeter, and Brandon Harris are all potential first rounders... Jacory has potential too but he is terribly skinny, lol, and doesn't throw hard (even though he can)... If Spence proves that his size is no obstacle in these upcoming seasons, he could be a first rounder as well...
Posted by: Doc Ibis | April 26, 2010 at 12:10 PM
If used correctly CJ Spiller will be a return specialist and a 3rd down/change of pace back. His issue is he doesn't break many tackles, falls when the first guy hits him etc... same ??? that Darren McFadden had coming out of Arkansas.

"After qualifying for the 4x100 Championship of America on Friday with a preliminary time of 40.40 seconds, the quartet of Cory Nelms, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller placed fifth on Saturday with their second-best effort of the season at 40.35 seconds."

UNC is stacked with talent that would have been first round easily. They just chose to come back to compete for a national title. So I wouldn't put too much emphasis on how much more talented we were last year based on the fact that we had more players drafted then they did.
There are at least 4 more players from UNC that would have been drafted. They all play defense.

Aqua - I hear you on that, but some of those picks that Jacory had where he was going downfield for a big gain - it was like "kid, what was that?" And I'm not just talking about Jacory, I'm also talking about the WR for the Canes not fighting for the ball in the air but rather instead, just letting it fall to them or the UNCackalacka defender. I think one of the long INTs, it was Collier who didn't go get the ball
There is the saying of "take what the defense gives you" and there is also the saying of "make the defense adjust to you" or be aggressive and take the fight to them
You do both. You can take what they give you to set them up for a something that will shred them for a big play or gain
Wasn't just the 4 INTs either, but that didn't help.
I distinctly remember a play in the 1st Qtr., 2nd and 9 deep in Cackalacka territory and they do an end-around gimmick that McCarthy sniffs out and has the guy dead to rights 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage and completely whiffs on the tackle - the guy runs for a 22 yard gain
The first score of the game in the 2nd Qtr. when DVD is playing 9 yards off the LOS and allows a quick slant route to go 30 yards for a TD, the WR just blew right past him
A 2nd and 3 in the 2nd Qtr. from the UNC 44 and Jacory throws it deep, and it's picked at the UNC 10 with the Canes WR not even turning around to see where the ball is in the air
Another pick in the 2nd Qtr. from the UNC 34 was all UNC with their pass rush and a UNC guy grabbing Jacory from his right side as he threw it, ball floated up into traffic, UNC plucked it out of the air and ran it back for a TD. The score was UNC 13 Miami 7 with a little over 1 minute left before half, with Miami driving. That pick 6 was devastating
4th Qtr. Miami down 23-17 with just under 10 minutes to play, Miami on UNCs 32 on a 2nd & 9, Jacory has Jimmy Graham wide open behind 2 UNC defenders and he throws it about 5 yards too short at around the UNC 10, you put some more air under it and Jimmy walks into the endzone. That's the play with the crazy ass playground hand off at the Miami 39 after the INT, that went in for a TD
Then, Miami couldn't stop UNC from running all over them in the 4th if their lives were dependent on it
23 seconds left in the game on the UNC 11, Miami down 33-24 with 0 timeouts left, and Jacory gets a snap about 2 feet to his left and about 2 inches off the ground, so he has to dive onto it
You know what, that whole game sucked

That's a lot of information you guys provided about the draft. How long did it take you all to figure the numbers. Great Work
