It has been rumored that the University of South Florida Bulls have lofty aspirations of turning the "Big Three" of college sports teams in the Sunshine State (UF, FSU and UM) into the "Big Four."
When told of this nasty rumor the response I got from one UM fan (below) who was at the UM-USF football game in 2009 was: "U gotta be kidding me, right?" He then proceeded to take a swig off both of his beers and LOL at the idea of the Bulls joining this exclusive club. Clearly this guy not only knew how to get his groove on but also knew what he was talking about!
As I thought of the idea of USF making the big time the first thoughts that came to my mind were "Surely U can't be serious" and "Not so fast my friend!" The school from the 813 in the same category as the five time National Champion from the 305? Child please!
It was just last November 28th and then again on Wednesday night April 28th (hmmm, sense some sort of pattern here?) that your Miami Hurricanes clearly and convincingly demonstrated (in two completely different sports and venues) why the USF Bulls have a long way to go to join the ranks of the Big Three.
Last year over in Tampa on a cool and clear November evening Miami embarrassed USF in football at Raymond James Stadium. The game was never in doubt and the score was never close as the Hurricanes closed out their 2009 regular season in style by grabbing the Bulls by the horns and tossing them to the turf on their home field by the score of 31-10.
It was there that we found this UM fan (below) celebrating in the same typical two-fisted Miami style as his Hurricane brother seen above.
For the complete recap click here:
http://canespace.typepad.com/canespace/2009/11/big-three-child-please.html
If you thought that was a beat down you should have been in lovely Coral Gables on Wednesday evening as the Hurricanes humiliated the helpless Bulls in basball by the football score of 14-7.
UM RS Freshman RB Lamar "The Truth" Miller returned to opening kickoff 98 yards for the first score and QB Jacory Harris threw a 47 yard TD to #47 LaRon Byrd in the second half for Miami. USF was held scoreless until the final minute of the game as UM's third string defense surrendered a late 3 yard TD run when the game was already over.
Oops, sorry wrong sport.
In reality the Hurricanes opened an industrial size can of whoop ass on the Bulls by pounding the ball all around and often completely out of Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. Even the Miami Maniac (seen below) felt sorry for the Bulls as UM 3B Harold Martinez came to bat and lauched another of his monster HRs well over the new scoreboard in left field.
The Hurricanes scored runs in six of the nine innings played against the overmatched Bulls pitching staff including five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game out of reach and they Bulls out of their misery once and for all. The 11th-ranked Hurricanes (31-11) hit three home runs on the night on their way to their seventh straight mid-week win and 11th-straight home victory.
Chris Palaez went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in, driving in a single run in each of his first four at-bats. Michael Broad went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Hard hitting Harold Martinez went 2-for-5 with his team-leading 14th homer of the season while Miami's Ryan Perry "Mason" extended his home run streak at home to five straight games with a three-run shot in the fourth inning that broke the game wide open.
Miami starter David Guiterrez (5-0, 4.29) gave up four runs and struck out five in five innings while earning his fourth victory in as many starts this season. UM relievers Echinosa, Grundy and Nazarrio all pitched well in support of Gutierrez.
So any more of this nonsense about the "Big Four" needs to be shelved for a while longer.
See what the Bulls don't have are five NCAA football National Championships.
What they don't have are four NCAA baseball National Championships flags flying over their ballpark.
Or any of these lovely rings (seen below) either.
So until they achieve some of these lofty goals and get some of these lovely rings then we think that USF should keep their mouths shut.
To us Miami fans all that talk is just BS (pun intended)!
Nice rings!
Jeff Feagles retires.

YUP. They belong to a very special woman in the UM baseball office. I first met her at the FSU game when I was yelling: "We got some Canes over here!"
She asked: "And who are U?" I replied: "I am Tom from Canespace." She said "I have something for U" and I said "Well I have something for U too!"
UM relief pitcher Howling' Wulf's Mom was sitting next to me in the stands and she said slyly: "This sounds promising." The crowd around us was LOL.
The woman then proceeded to give me an official spiral bound media copy of the 2010 UM Baseball Media Guide.
I proceeded to give her a Canespace T-shirt and a few Canespace business cards to spread around to her friends.
We called it even! True story.

So tell me this, obviously the kid have some pretty good grades from so many several posts i've read about him, so to some who might say it's because of academics, there is your answer to that, but did we not offer Herschel Sims running back from texas (easily a 4-5 star guy according to most recruiting sites) because we're expecting to get Wilder Jr or because we have so much depth already in that department???

We have depth. So like Coach Shannon said, we'll be very picky with this class.

CGNC, the Pens are now in the drivers seat and it is truly their Cup to lose. Baring a #29 China-syndrome in net somewhere in the next month and a half you can start planning the street parade in Steel City.

Hi ya OGV. I was thinking that when the Caps lost. LOL all the top seeds in the East are gone. The West stayed pretty true to form. Tonight is our game 1 with the Habs. What happened to your Devils? Time to retire Marty?

In fact I do! That was a day to remember.
Met the mystery woman from UM, Howlin' Wulf's Mom who had come all the way from Texas to see her son play in Trailerhassee, and Zeke DeVoss's Dad for the second time who was sitting two rows behind us.
When Wulf came in to pitch in the 8th and the FSU batter lined a missle to deep right-center, Wulf's Mom instinctively jumps to her feet screaming: "No, no, NO!"
DeVoss the UM CF takes off in a FULL sprint and just gets to the ball at the warning track by the outfield fence.
She screams: "YES!" at the top of her lungs and turns around to Zeke's Dad who has a shyte eating grin on his face and then break into a smile from ear to ear.
Wulf's Mom points at him and says "Thank U!"
DeVoss's Dad is humble and he just nods and smiles.
Another TRUE story.
U had to be there...luckily, I was.

CGNC, Broduer was the only guy who showed up all five games in the postseason. Still plenty left in the tank and if you watched some of the saves he made to keep the team even within sniffing distance of wins in four out of five games you wouldn't be asking that. I don't even have a problem with him playing 70+ games a year, he's paid 5 million a year for a reason after all. The Devils lost Niedermayer and Rafalski in the post lockout world and the franchise came to prominence by pairing great puck movers like those two, Andy Greene and Paul Martin, who are still with the franchise, (until Martin signs as a FA somewhere at least) and pairing them with the likes of Scott Stevens/Ken Daneyko/Colin White/Bryce Salvadore physical defense-men. Now physical defensemen have a harder time controlling the game with the emphasis on calling obstruction penalties and the puck moving defense-men role has been turned over to a younger, less physically gifted, less experienced, generation of player. If they can resign Kovalchuck and upgrade the blue line with one puck mover and one serviceable physical presence, they'll be fine. Growing up I got used to 1st round exits after President Trophy regular seasons with this franchise, so this isn't a complete shock and I trust the best hockey executive in the world today to figure this thing out like he did the salary cap problems earlier this decade so masterfully. If the West can't claim the Cup this year, we can finally retire the standard line in the NHL of the East being inferior top to bottom like I've heard for the last 20 years or so.

baseball... just to say it... i'm happy we are not winning every game by 7/8/10 runs, like 2 years ago, When we won super regionals but flopped in Nebraska.
We were burnt out at both ends trying to be the front runner during the season and went down in flames when the closing games counted, AT THE END !
Give me a team that is winning most of them and has lots of fuel in the tank at the end, to get thru losing the first one and then have the staying power to win the rest!

I was thinking, If Haith wanted to be the coolest guy to ever coach at Miami.
He should hang Jimmy Graham's football jersey right up in the rafters next to McMoneys, seeing as Graham will actually be playing on a real pro sports team.

That would be cool. It would buy Haith my faith for a few more years:)

Where I fished it at (Blackfoot river I think) was just a couple of miles from my aunt and uncles outside Missoula. I woke up early and drove down to the river and fished.
I wasn't alone as there was this kayaker who kept on going around this big boulder in the river. Ocassionaly he would become submerged but always righted himself. Sometimes he was under water for more than a few seconds and I had a little debate over how long I would wait before running to call 911.
He was on the far side of the river and it was pretty fast moving so no way could I make it out to him. Thought it was funny how he just kept going round that boulder, flipping over and doing it again.

If you ever get in far Northeast Georgia let me know, there are a dozen real waterfalls and plenty of whitewater rivers and streams within twenty minutes of my house.

In North Carolina the is a river called the Nantahala. Great white water for beginners.
There is really only one class 3/4 rapid and it is at the end of the usual river trip. One year my crew went over it five times in a raft that we carried up and over the falls over and over again.
We went over every way imagineable, even backwards one time. It was a blast!

Solar... great list!
Shawshank, (quite possibly #1 on my all time list... ), and the rest of your top 7 are all awesome!
(The pizz off list is pretty good too. Seen em all.)
Here's some more I love... some are pretty obscure... some obviously not.
The Usual Suspects
Harold and Maude (Great Cat Stevens soundtrack)
King of Hearts
Monty Python & the Holy Grail
The Matrix (part 1 ONLY)
Surf's Up (NEVER get tired of this animated gem.)
Local Hero (Great Mark Knopfler soundtrack)
Caddyshack
Blade Runner
Casablanca
The Godfather
Star Wars (The original.. Episode 4?)
Posted by: roachcane77 | April 30, 2010 at 07:26 PM
True Romance I thought was pretty awesome... the Dennis Hopper/Christopher Walken scene for one.
Posted by: DZ8 | April 30, 2010 at 07:35 PM
Soup... done Nantahala a couple of times... (I was a summer camp counselor in Brevard back in my college days.) Tipped a canoe at the top of the final falls once and went over with just a life vest. Pretty cool. My buddy whacked his shin on a rock though and fractured it. (Not pretty.) Talk about COLD water!
Most white water fun I ever had though was tubing down the North Fork of the French Broad river in NC. (WIth paddles.) It was wild! We had to portage around some of the hairiest stuff. What a ride... TOTALLY unspoiled and desolate... if anyone were to get hurt it would be awhile before anyone could get help. (Did some crazy stuff back then I wouldn't begin to think about doing now.)

When my daughter got married out in Cali last summer we went and visited some of the places where it was shot. (Mostly around San Fran. & Pacifica.)
The part where he pretended to kill Maude in front of his one armed military Uncle is actually some old ruins of a huge swimming complex from the 20's. Saw the cliff from the final scene where he drove his XKE hearse off too.
Ruth Gordon was perfect for that role... and all the suicide scenarios... priceless.
