When will they learn that the more control of these games they give these officials the worse it going to get

At least we dont have to worry about the officials being bought off or even gambling on the games themselves

"While only people with Miami Hurricanes championship rings actually defend taunting, the solution may not be perfect."

Cmon, when was the last time that the Canes were even penalized for taunting? Those Dallas folks had no problem with using Canes players and Coaches to win the Super Bowl though...

We have the officials right in our face after every score to see if we even SMILE, now they are gonna suggest that a dive to the pylon was taunting if the player has a U on their helmet.

I loved how that article had to swallow on the UM nuts, but saying, "Only Miami Hurricanes who have won championships agree wtih taunting" STFU... This isn't the early 90's b8TCH... A lot more teams and players taunt now a days, and the rule is being updated NOW.. Now 20 years ago d*CKHEAD

I did. Spent 8 hours researching and writing the damn thing and not a single comment on it. It is chalked full of stats and facts but nobody sees that as important. They would rather just state their own opinion over and over again about the same things that are completely unrelated to the lead article.

In three-plus years Shandel has NEVER written an article even close to this one. Manny maybe only a few times.

Effn Canes fans! Nobody cares about stats facts or quality content, they just all want to hear themselves talk or argue about their own opinions.

Maybe we can talk about what Coker is to blame for again? Or about tearing down the Orange Bowl? Or about Shannon's use of timeouts or media realtions? Or how about the uniforms? Or what to serve at a tailgate party? Yeah that would be fun!

The Gator's D will suck this year so they made that rule to help take away opposing team's TDs at a crucial point of the season.

They already used the multiple questionable calls from a biased officiating crew deal last year. Needed something fresh.

From SI.com:

Eye black with messages and wedge blocks will be banned from college football this fall, and taunting in the field of play will start costing teams points in 2011.

On Thursday, the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the three rules changes.

One year after the NFL banned wedge blocking on kickoffs because of safety concerns, the NCAA followed the lead. The new rule says that when the team receiving a kickoff has more than two players standing within two yards of one another, shoulder to shoulder, it will be assessed a 15-yard penalty -- even if there is no contact between the teams.

The reason: NCAA studies have shown that 20 percent of all injuries occurring on kickoffs result in concussions.

"Everybody is looking to make sure we have a safe environment for the players," said Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. "On kickoffs, you have a lot of steam on both sides and you usually have what is called a 'wedge buster.' This will eliminate some of that."

The hope is it will reduce concussions, an issue that has received greater attention over the past year.

The NCAA deemed it so important that it made a rare rules change in an off-year of the normal 2-year process.

But it's the taunting rule that will create the biggest buzz.

Currently, players who are penalized for taunting on their way to the end zone draw a 15-yard penalty on the extra point attempt, 2-point conversion attempt or the ensuing kickoff.

Beginning in 2011, live-ball penalties will be assessed from the spot of the foul and eliminate the score. Examples include players finishing touchdown runs by high-stepping into the end zone or pointing the ball toward an opponent.

Celebration penalties following a score will continue to be assessed on conversion attempts or the ensuing kickoff.

"I think one of the reasons it's been looked at is that when a penalty occurs on the field, it's normally taken from the spot," Teaff said. "This was the only occurrence that it wasn't taken from the spot, so they wanted to change that."

Taunting has caused an annual debate among college football players, coaches and fans, and last season's big controversy stemmed from Georgia receiver A.J. Green receiving a 15-year personal foul penalty after he caught a go-ahead touchdown pass late in a game against LSU.

The yardage from the penalty was assessed on the kickoff and helped LSU get into position to drive for the winning score. Southeastern Conference officials said later that there was no video evidence to support the flag on Green.

A third change bans the use of eye black containing symbols or messages, a trend that grew in popularity because of the use by Heisman Trophy winners Reggie Bush and Tim Tebow.

From ESPN:

Such is life at Ohio State, a program that has achieved so much in the last nine years but is always expected to do more. Since Tressel took control before the 2001 season, the Buckeyes own a 94-21 record, a 59-13 mark in Big Ten play, seven seasons of 10 wins or more, seven BCS bowl appearances, four BCS bowl wins, the program's first Rose Bowl championship since 1997, five consecutive Big Ten championships (six overall) and six consecutive victories against archrival Michigan (eight overall).

And only one undefeated season, in 2002.

So are the townsfolk gathering outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, with burning torches in hand? Not exactly.

Buckeyes fans are in relatively good spirits this spring, still glowing from Ohio State's win against Oregon in the Rose Bowl. It certainly beats the feeling of the previous three seasons, when the team fell short in bowl games and returned to a cold Columbus.

But whether the post-bowl reception is bubbly or bleak, it never lasts long.

"Every year, we go through the spring, and when you're in Columbus, Ohio, everybody's expecting you to win a championship," wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said. "It comes with the territory, and it's something we expect. Win or lose in the bowl game, you're always going to come back and hear, 'OK, this is our year.'"

Every year might be regarded as The Year in Columbus, but some Ohio State teams support that claim more than others. The 2010 Buckeyes appear to be one of those teams.

Are we getting new uniforms?!?!

;)

404

I would say out of all of the points in the article (all good ones) that we need to work on INT's. What dominant team do you know that is not picking the ball off a few times per game? Miami needs to correct this if they want to be considered a contender in 2010. And J12 making better choices down field goes without saying.

404

And I did not realize (forgot) that J12 gave up 4 TD's last season...

404

$25 per ticket will seem like a steal in 7 months if you get a top 5 Miami vs. top 10 FSU for that Champ game!

404

From new ESPN ACC Blog that was just posted:

Miami: turnover margin. The Hurricanes ended up with a net balance of zero between their turnovers and their opponents' giveaways. That's due in large part to Jacory Harris' 17 interceptions. Getting on the right side of that ledger is key to Miami having a real breakthrough year.

At least ESPN is smart enough to read them.

More than I can say for Canes fans.

orange 'n green in the vein

SOUP, it's a well researched article that puts some metrics on what anybody who watched last season knows to be true. Your off season articles the last three years have basically said the same thing though, take better care of the football and take fewer sacks while generating more turnovers and negative yardage plays on defense. The good news is that every year you've been able to report some kind of improvement in at least one of those areas.

If you're going to get flagged for excessive celebration, make sure that flag gets tossed after you're already in the end zone so it's a dead-ball foul. Otherwise it's total point shaving scandal time in college football.

Soup, OSU is solid and experienced but if we're playing Hurricane football we'll eat them for lunch, more or less the same way USC, LSU and UF did, and for the same reasons.

I spent 3 hours one early morning studying OSU's games, as well as the Iowa-GT game and the Wisky game. It's all very clear. The only question is will the players bring themselves to the level of ferocity and frenzy we know as Hurricane Football?

We should have the size-strength equation balanced by then, which is really the first key.

University of Miami football fans will have an opportunity to select their seats for the 2010 season, receive a locker room tour and listen to a player panel discussion on Saturday, April 17, at BankUnited CanesFest & Select-A-Seat from 9 a.m. to Noon at Sun Life Stadium.

The event will not include an autograph session. Admission is free to the public.

BankUnited CanesFest & Select-A-Seat will give fans that haven't yet purchased their 2010 season tickets the opportunity to choose their seats from all available stadium inventories. Existing season tickets holders can also select seats should they wish to relocate. There will be interactive inflatable games, locker room tours and more.

Fans will have a chance to listen to a panel made up of approximately 8-10 UM football players that will be attendance.

Those players will represent the offense, defense and special teams and the panel will be hosted by "The Voice of the Miami Hurricanes" Joe Zagacki beginning at 11 a.m. The panel discussion will take place in Section 245 on the club level.

Fans can submit questions by emailing athleticmarketing@miami.edu.

OGV...we have made progress. There is STILL a lot of work to be done. Jacory has to protect the ball and scramble more when necessary to buy time or get positive yardage. He sat in the pocket to a fault last year. The UM secondary has to get to the ball this year. Tackling a WR after they get a first down ain't good enough anymore.

Capt. O...I sure hope the strength/size equation has been equalized by then. If we get pushed around (again) there will be very many unhappy UM fans on this blog.

GO CANES, BEAT OSU!!!

From www.hurricanesports.com:

The 13th-ranked University of Miami baseball team - winners of four of their first five weekend series in Atlantic Coast Conference play - will play host to No. 21 North Carolina in a three-game series beginning Friday, April 16 at 8 p.m. at Alex Rodriguez Park.

The Hurricanes improved to 24-9 on Wednesday, picking up their ninth win in their last 11 games with a 9-0 shut-out victory over Florida Gulf Coast at Hammond Stadium in Ft. Myers. Senior right-hander David Gutierrez turned in possibly his best performance as a `Cane in just his second start of the year, tossing seven perfect innings before being pulled after his pitch count reached into the mid-80's. While the perfect game was broken up in the eighth, Eric Whaley and Daniel Miranda eventually combined with Gutierrez to toss the first one-hitter by the `Canes since Scott Maine and Jon McLean accomplished the feat against Wake Forest on May 12, 2006.

Since the start of the NC State series three weeks back, junior catcher Yasmani Grandal has not only been the hottest hitter in the ACC, but possibly the country. Grandal, who easily leads the ACC hitters with a .476 average in league play, has recorded multiple hits in 10 of his last 13 games and is one of three `Canes riding a seven-game hitting streak coming into the weekend. Chris Pelaez and Nathan Melendres, who is 20-for-57 in UM's last 15 games, also had seven-game hit streaks going.

Is this the real 86Cane? I agreed with your four items, but I figured you didn't want 20 "I agree" and "Me Too" comments on it. Combining the 17 INTs with the 35 sacks, that is 52 negative offensive plays in 13 games, a full deck of cards worth. That isn't even counting rushing plays for negative yards. We fix that, and it will help take care of the other two issues as well.

"In three-plus years Shandel has NEVER written an article even close to this one. Manny maybe only a few times."
Very true.

"Effn Canes fans! Nobody cares about stats facts or quality content, they just all want to hear themselves talk or argue about their own opinions." I bet other fanbases have the same issues. After recruiting stats are done, I get statted out.

"Maybe we can talk about what Coker is to blame for again?"
I did that one time, as a joke.

"Or about tearing down the Orange Bowl?"
That reminds me, your main page still talks about saving it. Not sure if that is on purpose...

"Or about Shannon's use of timeouts or media realtions? Or how about the uniforms? Or what to serve at a tailgate party? Yeah that would be fun!"
This Effn Cane fan is sorry, man.

What, somebody pissed in your corn flakes?

Stats, Stats...
You want stats?
I'll give you stats!!!

How many Cheerio's are in a 15oz box...

Before I opened the box,... What's your guess?

281
563
894
1193
1342
2054
4802
5843 Cheerios.

I dumped the box into a bowl and started counting. I quickly realized this was going to take forever, and devised a faster way to string them. I fashioned a 4-inch "needle" out of a wire hanger, and dragged it repeatedly through the cereal. This was remarkably effective

I used wooden clothes pins to keep track of 50s and 100s of Cheerios.

It took about 7 hours to string up the o's. I spent the time in front of the TV, watching American Movie Channel.

The final count was finally in:
Four thousand, eight hundred and two Cheerios were in the box.

And how long was it, you ask ?... 73'

Thirty-two members of the University of Miami's 1985 National Championship team will be recognized prior to Saturday night's game on the 25th anniversary of UM's second national championship. Head coach Ron Fraser, along with stars Greg Ellena and Kevin Sheary and most of the staff and players from the team will be in attendance at Alex Rodriguez Park for a pre-game reception prior to game two of the series with the Tar Heels. The 1985 `Canes rallied from out of the loser's bracket at the CWS, beating Texas twice in the end to win the title. Ellena was named CWS MVP while Sheary was the winning pitcher in three of UM's five wins in the series.

The only stat UM fans care about for 2009 is: 9-3.

The only stat they care about for 2010 is: 12-0.

I get that. I prolly would have been better of with this:

Miami will go undefeated in 2010.

Miami will win all of their games by 40 points or more in 2010.

Miami will beat the Seminoles so bad that the Department of the Interior will investigate.

Miami will be considered so dangerous in 2010 that the Departrment of Homeland Security will put the entire Hurricanes team on their "no fly" list.

Miami will win the ACC by beating their in-conference opponents by 50+ points.

ALL of the teams in the ACC will be so afraid of the Hurricanes that they will ALL refuse to play them in 2011 or beyond. Miami will be forced to go independent like Notre Dame and form their own TV Network.
