1st!

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Yo. Nice to see all our draftable guys get drafted.

DZ8

and I was just saying LaRussa is over rated! I take it back... out for awhile. Great write up guys!

solarcane

dz I grinned when you said that on the other blog article, when you read LaRussa's resume he's hard to leave out.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

DZ8, UNC isn't a year ahead in development, they just have older players. But that gap has been closed and we'll see it on the field this year, all over the field.

solarcane

wad up CaptO

I firmly believe we have the fire power to beat UNC even with their stout defense
I know our defense can handle UNCs offense which has never finished higher than 92 in the nation all three years we have lost to them.

We have too much at every position

Aqua

Good stuff,

love Bob Hayes' story. He's a badass.

I'd put Tommie Frasier ahead of ST, but I'd put Frasier over Tebow too. The 95 Nebraska team is thought to be one of the top college teams of all-time. Every game was a beatdown. Even our '01 team didn't win like they did..

solarcane

TJ Yates, does this sound like a QB brimming with confidence in his ability?

During the season last year we knew a lot of the times the defense took over for us and won us the game,” said Yates. “There was a stretch during the middle of the season when the offense was struggling in pretty much every way you could, with turnovers, not running the ball well, not passing the ball well. The defense created some turnovers, got us good field position. A lot of the times they won a game for us.

Aqua

Sling, you want Canes that played for the fins?

Rob Bailey- '96
Woody Bennett- 80-88
Jay Brophy- 84-86
Craig Erickson- 96-98
Horace Copeland- 98
Greg Mark- 90
George Mira- 71
Brett Perriman- 97-98
Twan Russell- 00-02
Leon Searcy- 02
Matt Walters- 05
Marcus Wimberly- 99
and some others

Just noticing the longest career was Woody Bennett's 9 seasons with the fins.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Solar, it's interesting looking at UNC's record and scores last year. They played a lot of close games but they gave up some points and yards too. After watching some games from last year, I think our starting DL will be as good if not better than their and when we go to the 2nd wave I don't think they can keep up. I didn't see much other than the starters, who are sharp but I look at Quinn who everyone's raving about and I don't see a difference between him and Ojomo, Vernon, or Dye. If anything Vernon and Dye are even more athletic.

Quietly, I'm expecting Wesley to have something of a break out year because of Petri.

solarcane

aqua,
You are right about Tommy Frazier,
I don't know how the Canes didn't get him!

I know Six thinks a lot of Frazier.
We discussed where he should be over and over. I think Six has him ranked numerically lower than I do.

Taylor is a real tough fit.
You can only judge on what he did , which was exceptional, but unfortunately he wasn't around too long.

You have to be very careful in trying to be impartial not to martyr guys that have lost their lives that you really loved.

thanks for the props aqua

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Frazier was definitely Boss. They got lucky in '94 though cause Costa couldn't run three feet and throw at the same time.

2001 Canes would've demolished the '95 Huskers. And I expect the 2011 Canes to put their names in that group of greatest of all-time teams.

Aqua:

I've always gone the same route, donating about $150 to be able to purchase tix to away games. And you are right, it's never an issue and they always give tix back to home school. Everything I've heard about this game is different. UM is getting just a few tix for this game, it's in the contract. I know that (most) people will not travel, however, tix right now are going for $225+ and are only going up. Even if you decided not to travel, why wouldn't you buy your pair and make $300 by flipping them? Im just saying, everything that I've heard from within the school is that it's not happening this year for those donating in the $100-$1000 range...

86Cane

Solar I hate U. The stuff U send me is like Chinese. Over two hours editing and formatting. We have to talk. LOL

solarcane

captO
I'm with you on UNC being a too senior heavy to keep it going.

It seems their defensive starters are all legit but if a couple go down what happens?

Better yet they will graduate or be drafted next season right about the time our first wave of diseaseless Canes dominate Earth again.

LMAO!!
I know that one blew big time!
The athletes and bios are incredible.
When I started deleting paragraphs and stat column the entire article collapsed with players getting in each others bios, facts disappearing etc.

I'll hand type out the rest It will be worth it because some of these guys are crazy good.

Thanks for helping me, help you, help Canespace!

Aqua

Solar, your list is a thing of beauty. I poured hours into my top 10 plays list. What you guys are doing is impressive and a fun read..

It's funny I initially agreed with Taylor over Frasier, but on second thought what Tommie was apart of hasn't happened since.

Cap't, I agree Erickson rolling out Costa and chucking it 3 times in a row killed us in that game.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

Solar, haha, I love that first wave analogy. That's exactly what it will look and feel like. Shannon is seriously stockpiling talent. And the way this incoming class is taking shape it's going to be small but diamond studded.

Oh and did anyone happen to catch Barry Jackson's little blurb about Shannon's contract and the reason why it's taken so long???

THE AGENT!!

I told y'all.

DZ8

Capt. O

I think it's six of one and half dozen of the other when we talk about progressing further or being older. Yes they are older which means they have gone thru some of the bumps in the road we'll experience this year.

We're still going to crush them!

DZ8

solar

I didn't say he sucked, haha. You can't be a manager that long and not be good at it.

Look at John Gruden in the NFL. An over hyped, over rated coach the media loves who sucks. The NFL is proving that by keeping him in the announcers booth.

DZ8

I wonder where Sam Shields would've been drafted if he got to stay at receiver with Whipples offense just one year...hmmm.

solarcane

thanks aqua.

There were 300 names I looked at by myself, and Six had as many, though most were the same.
whittling the list down to fifty is sure to leave some quality guys off.
I have them in the order I felt is fair by what I was looking at.

Twenty other people would have the same guys in a different order. That, and remembering some of these athletes was the intent

It's just hype they use into getting you to give them more money. Yes plenty of people will scalp them. I might not be able to get 6 or 8 tickets but I bet I can get 4.

DZ8

And even though he was a Seminole I always point out every chance I can that Leroy Butler invented The Lambeau Leap.

TOTALLY TRUE, WHICH IS WHY I AM BOYCOTTING THE GAME. EVEN THE UMAA IS IN ON IT THIS TIME.

Captain Optimist aka Cavaleer

DZ8, I think he'd be in the same place he is now...CB. haha To me, it's what if he'd come in as a DB. But Shannon helped him more than he could ever help himself.

As far as our going through bumps, I think we went through almost all of them last year and the year before. UNC seems to go through the same bumps every year, regardless how much they improve. 8-5 two consecutive years. And with that corn-ball offense they're talking about a NC?? haha Butch is losing his grip on reality. He could easily have another 8-5 year. Then what's on tap for 2011???? Where are the soph's and frosh ready to step up and ball??

We'll see. I'm sure he's working on something but all these kids he inherited I think.

Hurriphin 302-4-305

Solar=MONEY.

Whether you like the placement or not, (so far its cool wit me) it is some great blog content.

Watch out for 2011 WR prospect Louis Smith. I'm going back home to try and "grease the wheels" this weekend.

solarcane

And the Lambeu Leap was a play on words on the famous Fosburry Flop;

which isn't to be confused with the Flip Flop;

which 86Cane made popular with his dumping one can't miss Cane freshman, for the next year's newer sensation.

DZ8

He got hired about the same time as Shannon, I remember being pissed that we didn't fire Coker just a month or so earlier so we could get Butch. These kids are his kids, as much as our kids are now Shannons kids. You might have one Richard Gordon or so holdover, or you might say his first recruiting class doesn't really count. They all count.

I would agree with you guys about their offense being too conservative and weak for NC talk but then I think about the Bama QB throwing for 56 yards in the SEC championship game. Something like that.

A great defense can go a long way, ask Trent Dilfer how he's enjoying his Super Bowl ring. Don't get me wrong I don't think UNC has the running backs Bama did and I don't think Butch is as good a coach as Saban is.

UNC? UNC? Coach, we Miami. WE GOT THIS!

solarcane

hurri,
thanks brudda!

solarcane

Is estaban in hiding because of that Arizona thing?

I haven't seen him on here in ages,

i'm jus sayin

TJL

good job on the list! I have one: Joe Brodsky Sr.

Hurriphin 302-4-305

DZ8,

Don't know of I told this story before, but the kid is a 2nd cousin of my wife's. Met him once about three years ago, and didn't even know he played ball. Wanna ask him of he'd commit if he got offered, but I don't wanna sound like I'm pole-jockin'. Or tryin to get all "family-friendly" because he might be "on his way."

86Cane

I HAVE SEAN TAYLOR IN MY TOP 10 FOR SURE.

Solar and Six are WHACK!

86Cane

Esteban is making the next edition of CanespaceTV. Wait for it, wait for it...

solarcane

TJL
good choice

"...Joe was an All American high school player at Miami Jackson High school and then became an All American college player at the University of Florida. If you go on the University of Florida website, you will find that some of his records still stand today! For over 40 years, his record for interception return yardage stood as an NCAA record.

...his greatest accomplishments were as a coach and family man.

...he led two different high schools to state championships - Miami Jackson and Hialeah Miami Lakes - and then was a coach of an NCAA (University of Miami) and a Super Bowl championship team (Dallas Cowboys). He is the only coach to have ever done that! (That's a good trivia question).

Joe also had two children who became star athletes after playing for him in high school. He had the added pleasure of coaching the Hialeah Miami Lakes football team to a state championship with his son Joe, Jr. playing quarterback and his other son, Larry, playing receiver. In an interesting twist of fate, Larry played with Herschel Walker when they both were with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL and played on the first USFL game ever televised.

...What impressed me most about Joe was that he turned down numerous offers so that he would not have his family traipsing around the country, even though he saw some of his closest friends become nationally recognized sports figures... But Joe was satisfied being a great teacher and a wonderful husband and father.

How do I know all of this? You see Joe Brodsky was also my cousin and ... Joe was truly a man of moral courage."

you know what I'm actually in the $500 donation level cause of my season tix.

Scratch what I said earlier about being in the 100-150 range.

Yeah you're probably gonna have to donate that much to make sure you gotta shot.

My bad, but still you're looking at $500 in donation and roughly $150-250 for 2-3 tix. That's too steep. I'll keep an ear and an eye out for extras.

If U ever saw ST#26 play HS or college ball then U could NOT disagree.

aqua

I forgot that my season tickets are really $250 a piece and another $250 in donation.

Sitting between the West EndZone and the Recruits/Alumus section, priceless..

4-Real

No disrespect but is this a Canes blog or UNC blog? Does anyone have information about the present Canes as far as injury updates on Lamar Miller? Any new info on future recruits? Any info on anything other than UNC ?

Cat 5 Cane

Soup...

no for tues... not here!
maybe wed...maybe?

Six

I don't think solar posted my list from the last time

Here's solar's 50-41, with my 50-41 in (parenthesis) next to his:

50 Tim Tebow (Tim Tebow)

49 Willie Galimore (write in David Eckstein b/c we both had Chris Collinsworth before solar found out he's disqualified)

48 Harold Carmichael (Andre Johnson)

47 Rick Casares (Jerome Brown)

46 Vince Coleman (Harold Carmichael)

45 Danny Wuerffel (Vince Coleman)

44 Devin Hester (Tony LaRussa)

43 Anthony Carter (Lou Piniella)

42 Ray Bellamy (Dick Howser)

41 Lou Piniella (Charlie Ward)

I think my 40-35 will be posted on Wednesday?

I'll stick up for where I placed who on my list, if anyone needs explanation, believe me I have it with plenty of stats/facts to back it up

Six

86 - you don't know where I have Sean Taylor listed in my top 50, unless solar gave you my list already

solar has him at #36 .... where I have him, you'll have to wait

Six

Canez1 - I don't keep ducking you brah, I was waiting at halftime during the Bowl game with 86, Mrs.86, Playa and raize ... exactly where 86 said to meet

Hell, even after the game when I came out of the Canes locker room after talking to Whipple and some of the players, I rolled up on some chick that looked like CGNCs twin and asked her if she lived up in North Cackalacka

She said "no .. why?". I just told her don't worry about it

I don't look much different than right here, so next game, you'll know when you see me
