Your University of Miami Hurricanes closed out a three game sweep of their weekend baseball series with a 10-1 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Stadium.
Miami gave Wake an old skool whooping by absolutely demonolishing the Deacons with brilliant pitching, timely hitting and excellent defense. The Hurricanes now stand at 20-7 overall and 10-2 in the ACC.
On Sunday Miami's Jason "Carlos" Santana threw six solid innings striking out 5, walking 2 while holding the Demon Deacons scoreless. UM relievers Travis "Steve" Miller and Taylor "Howlin" Wulf followed Santana's lead and were in perfect rythym as they sent Wake home winless from the weekend concert, uh, series.
The Hurricanes scored seven runs in the third inning to ensure that the rowdy crowd at Alex Rodriguez Park could start celebrating early. Harold Martinez and David Villasuso homered for the Hurricanes and Yasmani Grandal and Ryan Perry hit doubles for Miami. Chris Peleaz hit a triple and drove in four runs to solidfy Miami's grip on the game and the series.
On Saturday night the 15th-ranked Hurricanes beat Wake Forest, 9-8, in 11 innings on a walk-off single to left by Scott Lawson. Miami has won nine of their last 11 games and on this night relied on nine stolen bases to win their eighth straight game over the Demon Deacons.
Miami's closer David Gutierrez couldn't hold a two run lead going into the ninth inning allowing Wake Forest to plate two and send the game into extra innings. The Hurricanes seized the opportunity in the bottom of the 11th when Zeke DeVoss led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephen Perez and was brought home by Scott Lawson's flare to right to give the 'Canes the win.
Miami Killian graduate Daniel Miranda (2-1, 2.28 ERA) pitched the last 2 2/3 innings, striking out five while not allowing a hit to get the win for the Hurricanes. Starter Eric Erickson went five solid innings allowing just one earned run for Miami as he continued his comeback from surgery last year.
In the series opener on Friday night the Hurricanes beat the Demon Deacons 7-4 in front of the home crowd. Miami sprinted to a 5-1 lead and eventually held on for its eighth win in its last nine conference games.
Starter Chris Hernandez improved his record to 4-2 with the victory, going seven strong innings while giving up just one earned run and striking out seven. UM relievers Eric Whaley and David Gutierrez each threw one inning in relief of Hernandez to closeout the game.
At the plate the Hurricanes were led by Stephen Perez who had two RBI on 2-for-4 hitting. UM catcher Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-5 on the night to secure his fifth straight game with multiple hits. Grandal has now hit safely in 14 of his last 23 at-bats. Chris Peleaz also had another big night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a homer and his first triple in a Miami uniform.

I appreciate it but I'm good. I don't wear them EVERY day but it just so happens that I wore the Sean Taylor shirt yesterday and had the orange Canespace classic on today!
Thanks for the offer!

DZ, we weren't that far off on most of the guys. A couple of exceptions. But even those weren't huge differences. I think when it comes to the mock draft we'll probably have big differences.
Posted by: Esteban | April 04, 2010 at 06:19 PM
Esteban...good to see U around the blog. Looking forward to your NFL Draft feature.
Take care and Happy Easter!

Perhaps the U has more in common with Coach K and the Dukies than we'd like to think....doesn't this sound awfully familiar:
"Ohio," Krzyzewski said. "Let's say at Ohio State that we did what we have done at Duke. There would be statues. There would never be anybody looking for anything wrong with what you did. It would be a different mind-set from the one we have within this community."
The only difference between the U and Duke is that, at least, they get paid disproportionately more (from media revenue and other sources) than we do from being hated by the masses, so the us against the world mentality has a slight nuanced distinction to it when you compare the Dukies to the Canes:
"I guess in a sports way, they hate us," he acknowledged. "We're not a state school. We don't represent the masses." So here was class again. But oh, the ironies: Krzyzewski had scrapped his way out of Chicago, a son of the working class, hyperaware of every slight lurking around him, and he had ended up doing the bidding of a private college that had come to represent rich kids and wealth despite that institution's having begun as Normal College, an impoverished Methodist school in nineteenth-century North Carolina. The only thing that was normal here was the degree to which the integers of class and privilege in America got all scrambled. Suddenly, I saw Krzyzewski as an Indian fighting for the British Empire against the local settlers."
Just imagine if Schnellenberger had stay a few more decades, built the program into not only a consistent contender but a very profitable enterprise. We'd have a lot more money than we do now for our accomplishments (Duke won 3 championships in 30 yrs under K, we've won 5).
Just a thought.

86, you should have UM one in ur e-mail.
Posted by: Esteban | April 04, 2010 at 06:40 PM
Chris
Thoughtful analogy.
One difference about the U, and this something no one else has, including Duke, is the U family concept.
Those 5 NCs have been built/won by 5 different coaches. What's consistent about them is that all players, past, present, and future have had to answer to not only their coaches, the fans, and the school, but even more so to the past U players. You can leave the U, but the U never leaves U. It's a tradition, it's a way of life, it's a responsibility to others, it's the U: "it's everything, man"
U family: nobody else has it, nobody else ever will.

Absolutely beautiful day at the Miami Campus today! Paul McCartney rocks! Unbelievable how great that concert was last night!
3 1/2 hours straight, Sir Paul played 6 different instruments, that is a true musician!

Cat5,
Thanks for posting that spring game highlight reel. It really shows what I could see live, and that is that UM is very talented. James can have a breakout season because that long run he had was right up the middle and he cut back through the hole on that stretch play, broke a solid DE tackle and almost took it to the house. That is the kind of RB we need if we are going to consistently run the ball on opponents.
The new James will be like the middle version of James (Baby J) with good vision and not afraid to run up the middle, except this James will have fewer injuries, is stronger, will break tackles and is faster. I see he and Berry splitting carries with Miller providing the speed on third down or on special plays as a change-of-pace.
Posted by: windy | April 04, 2010 at 07:06 PM
if miller don't prove he can pass block it'll be change of pace deal. i think James gets 3rd down role cause he blocking consideration - unless Cooper actually returns to health.

McNabb traded to the Redskins
Posted by: SinisterCane | April 04, 2010 at 09:14 PM
Just shows how much the so called "experts" know. This bonehead on ESPN, Adam Schefter has been hyping the Raiders, mainly, and then this out of completely out of the blue for McNabb.
Whatever they pay this clown, Schefter, is way too much. Guys on this blog have more insight than he, or other "experts" have.
Intersting move, though.

Why the heck would the Eagles send McNabb to a team within their own division
A very bad trade for Philly
Philly just sank to the bottom of that division real fast
This makes the `Skins a contender now.
Be sorry what you asked for Philly Fan

Chris, yeah, I've thought about the similarities between Duke and the U, largely because they're the only other college sports team to have so much success, year after year. But Duke didn't really revolutionize the sport the way the U did and they weren't wild like the U, for better or worse. haha
But there are similarities.

Chris, that was an entertaining read. I didn't know much about Coach K other than the Bob Knight connection. He's very similar to Shannon, not surprisingly, esp. the way he views adversity, and having such a legendary and similarly driven HC in college.

I'll take a DVD of the spring game. Just send the donation to the 86Cane/SOUP address?
It's very very rare to see trades within the division. Will look very bad for the eagles if McNabb beats them twice a year.

Soup, let me know when and where to send the $ for the DVD.
Let me tell you as a Eagles fan this could be one of the worst trades in team history. This WILL come back to bite us in the a$$. To a division rival? In the NFC East? What a joke.
McNabb was due to make 11.5$ mill next year and than be a free agent. I dont think the draft picks of 2nd round next year and 3/4 the following year are worth it but to a in state rival is just not right. I am disgusted.

I remembered hearing of new rule changes coming, concerning the play will stop, if a player loses his helmet on either side of the ball... WTF, I said to myself. How can you stop a TD score by offense, if the defense drops a helmet on the 10 YL?
What I heard, didn't make sense to me.
So... Started looking at rules and 2010 changes coming...
NCAA FOOTBALL RULES COMMITTEE ACTION FOR 2010
Rogers Redding
Secretary-Rules Editor
2-12-10
INTRODUCTION
The NCAA Football Rules Committee met for the first time under the NCAA rules process which calls for rules changes to be made only in alternate years. Thus the committee did not make any rules changes for the 2010 season. The annual meeting this year gave members an opportunity to look at the game of college football holistically, consider trends in the game, and discuss and alert the membership to possible future action. The committee approved some changes to take effect in 2011 and made a small number of editorial clarifications that will go into effect in 2010 by editorial bulletin.

New data suggest shift in college football concussions rate
Feb 23, 2010 8:59:32 AM
By Jack Copeland
The NCAA News
Fresh data from the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program suggest that the occurrence of concussions in football games may be leveling off or even dropping after a persistent rise over nearly two decades of play.
Injury data for five fall sports have been made available online by the Datalys Center. The reports provide the first new NCAA data since the national sports-injury research center assumed responsibility last year for the Association’s injury surveillance activities.
